I had my son's 13th birthday party here & it turned out to be such an awesome experience. It wasn't your conventional party, which was perfectly cool with me. 2 hours was perfect for the kids as climbing takes a lot out of you. The staff was patient & worked really well with everyone. It was a lot of the kids first time climbing & I was nervous they weren't going to like it, turns out they had an amazing experience. Thank you Movement! Super busy on a weekday evening. The facility is mainly top roping, and every single climb/wall is full. There are also a couple walls for bouldering in the very front and the very back. The bouldering routes are fun and creative. The gym area is one of the bigger ones I've seen at a Movement gym. There's also a nice outdoor space where I've seen classes happen. Overall, it's a nice facility, especially considering how long it's existed for. Just be prepared for long lines and waiting. read more

As one of the only Top Roping gyms, theres a bit of flexibility I can give with this review. There's a good number of problems and climbs, and they rotate the climbs enough to keep things interesting. As for the Cons- the membership is incredibly expensive, and the gym itself gets packed during primetime. Far more annoying is the fact that they're running some half-baked daycare service on site, with 1 employee seemingly in charge of 4-6 children at any time. Instead of staying in the bouldering sites, they allow the children to drag them around the gym so they can toprope, with the 1 employee only able to watch 1 child at a time, while the rest run rampant with little to no supervision, running beneath other climbers, playing on the gym equipment, and just otherwise making a nuisance and major danger out of themselves. The gym is not a playground. It is not a McDonalds playplace. Either get enough employees to watch the children full-time, or pen them somewhere so the paying clients can actually use the gym as intended. read more

For the climbers, they routinely switch out the routes around 2-3 weeks throughout the gym. They have a good spread of levels ranging from 5.8 and up. They have bouldering, top roping, and lead climbing walls. There is a good challenge for every level. I did have a bad experience leaving my bag in the locker room - on my fault I did not lock the locker. But the management team did not do much to help me identify the thief - even though they have cameras throughout the gym. The theft occurred early on a Sunday morning when there was only a handful of people in the gym, so it would have been easy to identify. The thief stole everything, bag, purse, car keys. So I no longer leave things unattended in the locker room. Which also makes me question leaving my things around the gym. I haven't had anything stolen from the cubbies yet though. read more

Staff is friendly. I wish the bouldering area was a bit better well lit as it's pretty dark in there at night compared to Movement SC and MV. I come here for top roping since this is the only movement over here that has it. Between this gym, SC and MV, I feel like SVs bouldering problems are the hardest of the three so def come here if you want a good challenge. read more

TL;DR: Unfortunately, I'm leaving this 1-star review because what happened to me should never happen to anyone. This review isn't about me; it's about making sure others are aware and protected. After 2+yrs of positive experiences, I quit this gym because I felt HARASSED by the SUNDAY ALPINE INSTRUCTOR at the time (Spring 2025) who shouted/cursed, and tried to intimidate me after I set a boundary in class. He repeatedly acted in ways that felt inappropriate, unprofessional, and manipulative to me. Despite multiple complaints from others, the gym seemed to normalize/enable his behavior, eroding the culture. This whole situation was extremely disturbing and unfair. (Be aware: This instructor also offers personal training in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, etc.) *To anyone unsure about reporting harassment: do it. It's usually repeated behavior, and you're not alone; silence enables abuse. I'd barely interacted with this instructor; I was just there to work out. That day, he made repeated, unwanted comments: "You smell nice," "Your shoes are nice," "Your glasses are nice," "You are nice." I felt uncomfortable. Trying to defuse the situation politely, I quietly joked that I need headphones to block out the comments. Suddenly, he screamed at me at the top of his lungs, "FUCK YOU TOO!" in front of ~20 people, followed by laughing at me. No one stepped in. (Bystander effect or enabling?) This felt like an attempt to intimidate me because I set a boundary. Worse, he manipulated the situation by adding "TOO," as if I had cursed at him, so that others would think I was at fault, which I never was. I froze in shock/disbelief but chose not to escalate the situation, out of respect for the others. He continued making me uncomfortable. During the Superman exercise, he stood directly behind me and said disturbingly: "Stasia, I see you. I see you." (Some describe his communication style as "no nonsense". To me, it didn't feel like "no nonsense"; it felt abusive and inappropriate.) After class, as if nothing had happened, I found him manipulative again; he had the audacity to offer me someone else's cookie. He never apologized. ...Would all of this have happened if I were a 6‑foot man? I sat in my car for an hour afterward in shock, before driving aimlessly for 2 more hours trying to process what had just happened. WHAT WAS I PAYING MY MEMBERSHIP FOR: TO BE YELLED AT, CURSED AT, AND TO FEEL HARASSED BY AN INSTRUCTOR? I believe he targeted me because he assumed I wouldn't push back and perceived me as "nice"; when I asserted a boundary, he responded with aggressive defensiveness. While his language is never clean, his behavior in this instance was far worse; it felt like a deliberate abuse of power. This wasn't the first time I felt he crossed the line. In the past, while I was doing push-ups, absolutely without any reason or permission, he suddenly touched me and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear (so creepy!). Recently, he unexpectedly pinched a bruise on my back while I was exercising. After I returned from a long break, he immediately singled me out in front of everyone, putting me on the spot, and later asking where I had been. (Some described him as "playful," but to me it always felt like he was playing deliberate, manipulative games.) I've also witnessed him verbally mistreat a group of females, which I intervened in, and made them feel comfortable. He typically just walks around, chats, and tries to become your "friend"; he doesn't really give exercise advice. But I also found his behavior came across as manipulative, moody, or insecure: cursing, trying to assert power, or acting as the victim at times. It felt like he is overcompensating for smth. I believe his behavior had become normalized since even regular attendees and some staff stayed silent. I messaged a staff member and a frequent class participant about the incident; neither replied. This felt like the issue was being silenced which was disappointing. (Thankfully, my gym friends and another staff member were appalled and supportive.) SO, WHAT DID THE GYM DO? Nothing. Leadership simply asked him if so and so happened. He claimed he "didn't recall," which I believe was a lie. That was the end of it; no suspension, no discipline, no termination; nothing. The gym chose not to act further, which made me feel as if the issue was silenced. He has been with the gym for 10+yrs, and others had filed multiple reports against him and were disappointed by the lack of action (incl. on Yelp). My experience might have been prevented if the gym had taken earlier complaints more seriously, and I would not have needed to write this review. I liked this gym. But after the incident, realizing how normalized this behavior has become, and seeing him not held accountable, I was very disappointed. I hope the gym reflects on this and chooses to do better because no one should ever feel harassed in a place where they are supposed to feel supported. read more

Been coming here for years since I was little! This gym has a great top roping, bouldering, and weights area! They have top roping and bouldering for all different levels so it's great if you are a beginner or an old timer. The monthly pass is a bit expensive but it may be worth it if it's your main workout and activity. The membership you get one buddy pass per month which is nice. Overall, I recommend anyone to try rock climbing and this is a great indoor activity to try! read more

I've climbed here several times on weeknights after work (passed my belay check here) and have also done restorative yoga with Anfisa, as well as a couple of the weekend Flow yoga classes. Maybe I'm just not enough of a climber to look past these things, but I found the environment overcrowded, very noisy (beyond what you would expect for a social zone), and dusty everywhere, even in the gym area. On weeknights, the bag areas are generally so full that people leave their backpacks, shoes, and gym bags in huge circles on the ground. Every time I put down my stuff, I felt nervous that someone was going to mistake my stuff for theirs and take it. Benches are so packed that you have to sit on the floor to put on shoes; the bag areas are so heavily trafficked that it persistently smells like feet (ew!). The last time I was there some months ago, they had 4 Keiser stationary bikes and a few Matrix-branded bikes. The Keiser bikes are old models that do not have a phone holder, so you have to find some place to store your phone while you work out. The bikes and treadmills directly face a lead climbing/top rope wall, so people on the routes are constantly chalking up, and as a result that whole area is very dusty, which is not ideal in an environment where people are doing cardio. I don't know how the gym is on the weekends, but on weeknights there are people everywhere: lining up to climb routes, milling around watching their friends climbing, sitting on the floor, sitting on benches, using the gym equipment. It's like the Chinese saying "people mountain, people sea". There is a mat in the gym area where you can do crunches and such, but that mat also gets very crowded. A pet peeve is that the mirror in the gym area is not floor to ceiling; there is a gap of a foot or so between the bottom of the mirror and the floor, so if you are doing crunches or glute bridges you cannot check your form in the mirror. The yoga room is blessedly quiet and well insulated from the outside. However, the yoga classes I went to were also very crowded. Since the room is large, people would pack, and as a result it was often hard to see the instructor or find a place where there was enough room to stretch out. I think that if you are a devoted climber and you can get used to this sort of environment, this is probably a really great place to climb. But again, I just don't think I'm enough of a climber to look past the hassle of dealing with all this! lol. read more

Wow. This was an amazing experience with my 7 year old daughters. They were apprehensive at first and quickly picked up thereafter with the assistance of our belayer- Patrick. It's quite spacious and not crowded. The staff are friendly. The bathrooms are clean and includes showers and a sauna that I definitely want to try out in the future. Because my daughters enjoyed this so much, I signed up for a free class to learn how to belay so I can bring them in the future without needing one of the staff to belay for us. The website is usable, although not very friendly. I wish it was a little bit better. The girls and I can't wait to come back! read more

I came here for the first time with a friend on a Sunday afternoon and we had a great time! We usually climb at Peak of Fremont but wanted to change things up -- the walls here are higher and I think the difficulty level is higher, so it was a good workout for sure. The front desk staff is friendly + once you fill out the waiver and watch the orientation video on bouldering, you'll be good to go on bouldering. I'm not too big on bouldering so I can't speak for the bouldering here -- the guy who did my belay test (Spencer? sorry that I'm terrible with names) was super nice though and got me set up with everything I needed. They have nice merchandise at pretty reasonable prices and we were both eyeing one of the chalk bags but ultimately decided against it because we technically both have bags already. (It's such a cute design though! Maybe one day..) Will definitely be back! :] read more

Bouldering will always test your limits whether you're advanced or not. It's a fun way to challenge yourself and face your fears at the same time. The ambiance is definitely busy. There's people everywhere you turn. You'll definitely have to wait your turn in a few spots you want to boulder but it's quick. We paid for the day pass, chalk and shoes for 2 people which came out to $76 total. $32 for a single day pass. Totally worth it for a quick activity! read more

I have been going to Aaron's sunday alpine class and I recommend it highly! He is a dedicated and passionate teacher and is professional and considerate. This is one of the best classes movement offers. Aaron's classes are so popular they frequently go over capacity and this is a reflection of how much people enjoy his class. Aaron is also one of the few coaches who has also taken injuries and form seriously and has called me out when I was doing pull ups incorrectly and given me advice to get better. He does like to greet and joke around with people in class and has a direct communication style. For people who do not know him well, I can see how this may be misinterpreted. I did see the review from another member and I don't want to discount her claims, but I wish movement was able to speak with her to let her voice be heard and mediate and figure out a plan, so that she did not have to write a public review. Bottom line, many people love Aaron's class and his teaching style and feel safe and comfortable with his approach. I can only speak for myself but his class has changed my life and encouraged me to become more fit and serious about my health. read more

I have been a long term Touchstone member for many years living in the East Bay and the City. When I moved to the South Bay for work, I joined Movement Sunnyvale. I primarily joined the gym for top rope and lead climbing - and this is the best place in my area for rope climbing. I've been climbing here regularly 3-4 times a week for the last three years. There's a reason I cancelled my membership after being a member for over 15 years and visiting 2-5 times a week during the whole run with over 1400 check-ins! The monthly cost keeps going up ($117 when I finally called it quits) on a yearly basis, with no discernible improvement or upgrade in their offerings. In fact, the equipment and facilities keep getting more run down. The showers are never hot and the towels are feeling more and more threadbare. The fitness equipment and machines are often dirty or rusted or malfunctioning. Also, they never brought back half of the yoga classes with hardly any scheduled on weekday mornings. And the yoga schedule itself is nonsensical and impossible to keep track of because the classes no longer follow a set starting time. There is a general feeling of dinginess, from the holds which aren't cleaned to the flooring which is always covered in dirt and debris. I get that this is a climbing gym and people use chalk, heck I use chalk! But it always feels dusty and dirty here. The value of being a member is no longer there. After jacking up membership fees year after year, the least they could do with all those funds is install an HVAC system to combat the extreme heat in the summer and the extreme cold in the winter, rather than pouring our super expensive Sunnyvale membership fees into opening other Movement gyms in other states. I know that they have opened Santa Clara and also plan on opening another in Mountain View, but not all of us are into bouldering. I still think that the climbing community and front desk staff are pretty nice, but it ultimately wasn't enough to keep me coming back. It no longer feels like a real community when even their local gym competitions require a fee to join, and I'm tired of my increasing membership fees going towards subsidizing the opening of other locations which don't benefit me. Whatever happened to giving back to the community? The gym now feels extremely corporate, and Movement is just about making more money. I may consider rejoining at some point...but honestly, I don't even think I want to buy an overpriced punchcard at this point, so the hurdle of once again paying their one time $49 "initiation fee" for the privilege of joining as a monthly member is probably too high for me to overcome. read more

I actually enjoyed climbing at this location. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The climbing section is much bigger than what initially meets the eye. I wish they required users to tidy up their area after climbing. I almost slipped on a rope that was loosely laying on the ground. Additionally, this location doesn't have any auto belay machines. He is highly skilled in adjusting yoga postures, something I haven't experienced at other gyms, and it has been incredibly helpful for my yoga practice. Barry's classes are fun and full of humor. I've introduced my friends to join his classes at Movement Gym, and everyone loves him. Even some of my friends who are beginners have made great progress. Occasionally I'll return to Movement Sunnyvale as it's nostalgic for me -- Sunnyvale was my home gym before the opening of Movement Santa Clara. Like last time I witnessed over 5 incidents of children, adults, and newcomers walking in fall zones. I speak with other climbers from Santa Clara about Sunnyvale and they've reported the same thing. It's sad to see such an amazing gym turn so sour. I imagine that things will only change when someone gets injured due to negligence. If you end up visiting this gym be well aware that it is not a safe place. I recommend that you climb with a group in case of people violating fall zones. read more

In summer, there is no A/C or fan. Even though the doors in the back are open, this means it gets really hot. Compared to the Santa Clara Movement gym, which does have a fan, that was disappointing. The bouldering projects don't seem to have enough mat space for the amount of people gathered, and there were multiple times I saw people almost fall on others. There's also no separate path to get to the back bouldering room, so I had to walk *under* the top ropers to get there, and that felt unsafe. If you want to boulder, the Santa Clara Movement gym is a much better place to be. read more

Big shout out to Sunday Alpine instructor, Aaron!!! I've been going to this class for years and I absolutely love his style and programming. His workouts are great and the Sunday community is so awesome... and hard core. I used to be a personal trainer and Aaron's classes are the only ones I go to because his programming is really fun. He is also very generous because workouts typically go for an hour and a half instead of just a typical hour. He wants everyone to have a great workout and also to be really safe so if he gets on you, it's because he wants you to have appropriate form. It's tough coaching 30+ people so be sure to sign in so you are guaranteed a spot. Awesome class and awesome instructor. read more

It's an ok gym. Their customer service is okay--for example, if you buy a year-long membership, but then move out of the area, you can't sell, transfer, or refund the rest of your membership. When my wife and I applied for a family membership, it wasn't enough that we had the same address--they asked for our marriage license because we have different last names. It's small things like that that make the customers feel not cared for. The memberships are quite expensive compared to other gyms, so I feel like I should be treated better for how much I pay. The gym itself is very dusty and crowded. I feel unsafe frequently by how tightly packed everybody is both in roping and bouldering areas. At peak hours you have to fight for routes/ropes. There are frequently ropes that are closed for weeks at a time for unclear reasons without being fixed, worsening this problem. The lighting is very dim--during the day, my eyes have to adjust to the dark when I walk in. At night, the dinky overhead fluorescents give a dim depressing feel to the gym. In the overhung parts of the wall especially bouldering, you legit have to squint to see holds. Again, for the amount they charge for membership you'd think they could spring for some new lights. There isn't enough cubby space so everybody throws their bag on the floor, creating a huge mess and blocking access to the cubbies. Benches are cluttered with peoples' bags and so can't be sat on. It is quite literally corporate, owned by a national chain that doesn't seem to care about the product they sell. For those who have visited gyms in other major towns (Denver, LA, Seattle), keep your expectations low. There isn't much competition in the Bay Area. read more

Been a member for a few years now and it's such a great gym! Huge selection of problems, both bouldering and roped climbing, and the staff are so friendly and helpful! I recently bought a pair of climbing shoes here and the person who helped me was knowledgable and honest about his opinion. Plus, they have a 45-day return policy on shoes, which is huge--most places where you buy shoes (especially online) won't let you return them if they've touched rock or plastic. Not PG! They know how hard it is to find good shoes and actively encourage you to try. The climbers who go here are pretty friendly, too. I randomly chat folks up all the time and everyone I've met has been great--no judgment, all fun! As a shorter climber, I also appreciate the fact that they sometimes test routes with shorter climbers while route-setting. I saw the head setter (maybe 6' or taller?) testing some overhang problems with a much shorter climber, and he added a foothold specifically for her! It didn't make the problem any easier though haha. read more

I'll be honest that I pretty much live here, but I don't have to go anywhere else except for an occasional sortie to the Santa Clara site. Sunnyvale Movement has tons of bouldering (almost as many as SC amusingly) and ropes, including lead. I don't run out of things to climb (especially with the fast setting pace as of late). The setters are thoughtful and dedicated, making sure there is a variety that includes fun to challenging. The equipment is always getting checked. Daytimes are chill and quiet and the evening is busy, but you you just have a wait an extra minute to get on whatever you want or you can go to an older set and you'll have plenty of space. The gym has plenty of equipment and I do PT and lifting after my climb sessions. I've joined fitness classes occasionally and those are pretty great. Lots of kids programs, classes, coaching etc. Climb on. read more

Could be fun place if you come here for a day to try climbing but for someone who have been a member for over 5 years, it became overpriced gym with probably worst sets especially rope. They rarely update rope routes now. I used to love coming here and had to stop because setting quality is getting worse every time. Not consistent grading, and prob change one section of the wall per month for rope.. every time I tried other gym, I realized how it used to be fun to climb. Unfortunately there is no competitor gym in South Bay that's the reason my friends still keep their membership here.. it's shame because gym itself is great and I love to keep climbing. They also increased monthly fee $10 every year claiming they made "improvement" spending over 3mil acquiring other gyms in other state... which doesn't improve anything at Bay Area gym, and I see opposite of improvement... read more

Stopped by here and I have to say this climbing gym has a a very dark cavern kinda feel upon entering. Maybe because the ceiling is very tall due to the belay walls right next to the Boulder walls. It does feel a bit cramp compared to Studio Climbing in SJ or the Movement in Santa Clara. The parking lot is a zoo and was packed! Come prepared to spare time to find a parking spot. People had to park illegally on the side of empty spots that are not designated for parking. read more

First climbing gym I've checked out in the Bay Area, not impressed. In comparison to the 4 climbing/bouldering gyms I frequented in Seattle (Seattle Bouldering Project 2 locations, Stone Gardens 2 locations, Vertical World, Half Moon), plus Dogpatch in SF, I've noticed several issues here: 1. Crowded because of unreasonable space planning, not busy foot traffic - 1) At least two passes connecting different sections are narrow and right below climbing problems. Once climbers are on those problems, it becomes either almost impossible for people to pass through since a belayer is standing right in the middle, or extremely dangerous since a climber is bouldering right above. 2) In the other combo gyms I've visited, the top rope sections are always separated from the bouldering sections. Here, they are right next to each other, making safety a big concern for the belayers and the resting climbers. 3) Given how spacious the gym is, the traffic here is not that busy. I've seen climbing gyms with way more people. However, it feels far more crowded here than anywhere else, due to the weird arrangement of the problems/the space. 2. Their padding is the hardest I've ever landed on. I highly doubt whether it provides any protection or buffering at all. I wouldn't want to ever fall by accident on these mattresses because that may deprive me of my knees forever. Just listen to the thundering sounds people make when they fall on these pads ughhh. 3. Little variety of problems. Even though the gym seems spacious, the variety of the problems here seems limited. I didn't notice many slab or overhung problems, mostly vertical. 4. The holds here are greasy and noticeably not well maintained. I overheard people commenting on the holds here being way greasier than the PG Santa Clara location. Well, definitely agree with that... Decently sized climbing gym with a very large section for weight training. This gym seems to have more walla for tight ropes, but there's enough bouldering problems to keep you busy! I came here for bouldering, and was overall satisfied...althought I would've liked more walls dedicated for bouldering for me to try out read more

This is a review I forgot to submit based on pre-COVID visits, so I am not sure what precautions/requirements are in place at this time. Have now come here twice with friends. not going to lie, I enjoy watching American Ninja Warrior during the summer and I'm always super impressed by the contestants, especially those with a rock-climbing background who tend to excel quite well on the course. If you're a student, be sure to bring your student ID and you can get a nice discount. Both times we have come, the place was pretty crowded. However, there was always room to find some beginner level bouldering areas. Although I'm definitely not good at this and got tired waaaay too fast, the experience was great both times. I also really appreciate the culture of the rock climbing / bouldering community. Sometimes you'd hear the front desk say someone was interested in belaying and it's just such a great casual way to meet other people and get some tips on how to improve. Unfortunately, when we came around 4 to 5 p.m., the next course for belaying was at 8 pm. Was not able to try this out this time, and we'll definitely need to consider timing if I want to try in the future! Also ran into someone we knew, who helped give some great techniques for us beginners. Definitely felt sore the next day! Would come again. Ideally, you can come for a solid several hours, or come back later in the day since you're paying for a day pass. If this was closer and I had time, I would have considered going several times a week and would have looked at the monthly memberships since it's a really good value if you can come out a few times a week. read more

Movement Sunnyvale is a great gym. I don't think it's as good as it's partner, Movement Santa Clara, but it still a high rated gym. There is a lot of top rope and lead at this gym, which makes up for the smaller bouldering area they have. The routes are good here and there are a lot of problems. Came here with Martin, her friend, and Allen! Parking: pretty spacious! Not the best drawn lines, but you'll be fine. Steps before climbing/using their facility: 1) Fill out your personal information and sign the waiver on the iPad. 2) Go up to the counter, tell them what kind of pass (ie: day) you want. 3) Show your ID, and rent any shoes if needed. 4) Watch a video tutorial in the back area (around 10 minutes long). 5) Come back to the front and let them know you are done! Pro tip 1: you can pay with Apple Pay! Pro tip 2: not sure if it's because I got lucky (I didn't bring my ID), but I showed a picture of my scanned ID and it was fine. Pro tip 3: You can get a free locker from the front desk (after #5) in exchange for an ID (ie: credit card too). Even the V0 and V1 are hard! Definitely got me super sore, but also motivated. There is a backlot where there seems to be some type of other activity going on (looks kind of like a balance beam), so just walk around and see what you want to do! I highly recommend getting climbing shoes...you will feel a lot safer, and also just more OP, hehehe. Borrow chalk from other friendly climbers, and have fun! PS: There is a "gym" in the back area (benches, squat racks, dumbbells and treadmill). There is also a whole section of a wall just meant for gripping practices. This is open for use too! read more
