    After being here for a month, I realized I didn't actually know what F.N.S. stands for. I sheepishly asked one of the coaches at the front desk, who told me that it means Fitness Never Sleeps. So there, now you know! Speaking of the front desk, everyone is super nice and remembers my name whenever I come in, which is not even that often! I play pickup basketball pretty regularly. I enjoy it because it's a good workout and it's fun to play with a group of people to work toward an objective. I can't bring myself to run regularly or do home exercises habitually. It turns out when you put your dumbbells next to the couch, you still just want to sit in your couch all the time. Anyway, I figured I should do something other than hoops to round out my overall fitness and avoid injury on the court. I've been coming out to FNS for about 4-5 weeks now, about once or twice a week. I'm not exactly a weightlifting enthusiast, and my left knee and I aren't on great terms right now, but I look forward to coming in for classes when my schedule allows (pro-tip: just carve the time out in Outlook as "busy"). Classes are fun, with motivational coaches who are attentive and inspire a spirit of camaraderie. The workouts have a bunch of variety to keep things interesting and well-rounded, and -- more importantly -- the equipment is all set up for you when you come in, so you can get going right away. It's way better than working out at home on your own by several orders of magnitude. Lastly, I like the classes for the same reasons I enjoy basketball -- great workouts that aren't boring, with a group of people who are working toward an objective. As far as results go, well, it's probably going to take more than just a month of dilly-dallying 1-2x a week to have anything to show for it. But I definitely feel good, and that's what matters at the end of the day! Also, last week I was able to carry my sleeping 7 year old through an airport terminal with one arm while rolling our bag with the other; that counts for something yeah?

    Outdoor HIIT workout tents to meet the safety requirements during this COVID19 pandemic. I always feel safe and f'n love this place!

I do feel like this is a step up (although it's also a lot more expensive), but I do feel like there are opportunities for improvement here. On some days, parking can be difficult to find, especially during rush hour time. Some areas of the gym look older than others and the overall layout is strange to me. There's multiple, sectioned off areas with different workout machines, so depending on what you decide to work out on, you migrate to that specific room. I personally like a more open layout floor plan, but the building isn't designed that way. I feel like some guests don't pick up after themselves and often find the men's steam room trashed. Lockers are big and for the most part pretty clean. I feel like more regular sweeping, cleaning, and wiping down of surfaces would be nice. Showers are nice and there is complimentary shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. In the restrooms you can find everything you need to shave, Q-tips, hair dryers, lotion, etc. The towel service is definitely nice and convenient. Complimentary coffee and tea before 11am is also a bonus. The recovery room is one of my favorite areas. It's nice for a post workout hydro massage. Equipment is usually in good condition. Overall, I enjoy my membership and try to make the most out of it. Honestly, if Equinox was closer to where I lived I would probably pay the premium to go there, but Bay Club is closer to where I live so it will do for now.

I learned to climb a rope, climb over a wall, keep my joints flexible, do a bar hold for a minute and do my very first push-up at 3fit. I was amazingly impressed with how she did the assessment and pointed out all of my problems through my movements, and told me how to train to improve them and my back conditions (I have a long history of severe back pain). We focused on all the basic techniques first, the first few sessions were all about how to engage the core and breathe right to make sure I work out safely. These are essential for all sport training, but also significantly important for people with bad back like me. Gwen's workouts are challenging but super fun to do. She always listen to how my body feels to make necessary adjustment. I have passed the period of mobility focus and now working more on the agility workouts. My back has been great, and after the first few months of moving slow, I started seeing steady results. I took a Dexa scan at the beginning to know where I was at, and now taking it every 2 months to keep track of the results. While my lean mass has increased a bit slowly, I have drop quite a good amount of fat mass, and my bone mineral is higher. If you are looking for a trainer, I highly recommend Gwen, she is a perfect match for any training needs but even more so for people with injury and training limits.

During my consultation we went over my goals and over the first couple of sessions after assessing my fitness levels he came up with tailored training and nutrition plans to help me meet said goals. He's very knowledgeable and adept at personal training. On several occasions he's taught me the correct technique to do a particular movement so I can target the muscle group more effectively and avoid any potential injury. He makes sure that I challenge myself during every session and pushes me to my body's limit. Most importantly Paul makes the sessions a lot of fun. However, there were some minor improvements that can be made. 1) the class sizes felt too large. For the boot camp class, there were close to 30 students and approximately 8-10 different "stations" or rotations going on simultaneously. There were 2 instructors going around demonstrating the activities and correcting form but ultimately, we felt confused half the time. The echo and music also made it difficult ti follow the instructor sometimes. 2) for the boxing class, the different punches were called out as numbers 1-6. It took a while for my partner and I to figure out which number correlated to which technique. It was out first time attending the class, and I'm sure the regulars would know which number correlated to which punch. However, it would have been nice to have a quick intro during class. The gym is new, so I'm sure they are working out the kinks over time!
