My uncle once said after a bad meal. "Well the water was good." That's what I think of this place. For the price, which was way too much for what I got, I was expecting better food. The sausage was over cooked, the potato salad and the beans were bland. The best part was the bar-b-q sauce. I only travel to Kennedale twice a year but I know where I wont be eating again. Place always has a line backed up the street so decided to give it a try. I had the Texas Double plate with Ribs and Brisket, and my wife had the baked potato with shopped brisket. Ribs were excellent, good smoke flavor, , juicy, meaty and yes, fall off the bone tender with each bite. Brisket was also tender, good flavor and we'll seasoned. Sides were okay, nothing spectacular, deserts looked good but we passed this time. Portions were large leaving no room for the deserts. Was in town visiting family and decided to try a bbq spot after finding this place on Yelp I decided to order online and I'm glad I did cause when we got there to pickup our order the drive thru line was 15 cars deep!! I was glad we picked this spot cause the food must be good because who waits in a line that long if the food isn't good.. and I was glad we did an online order because they brought out food right out to us in the pickup order parking spot. We ordered so much food and everything was good the sausage, turkey, brisket and whole chicken were all so good. The turkey was my favorite. Honestly, when we were going before Covid the food was better, and it cost less with bigger portions. Over time, they changed vendors to a cheaper meat place (it seems), increased their prices (which was fair during covid, but they kept them the same) and reduced the amount of food that comes in the plate. It's honestly one of the biggest fall offs I've ever seen a restaurant go through. The line for this place used to be down the street. Now, I hardly ever see anyone there. A bright spot in kind of in a run down area, located in a rehabbed Dairy Queen. Locally owned and operated. Super friendly service! Very casual and laid back. I had the ribs and chopped beef. I tried it again after not eating there for several months. The quality of food is not AA good as it use to be. The customer service is lacking and the area seems dark and lighting was not good. It will probably be a while before returning. The food is much more expensive than it was expected. I know everyone is suffering in areas of cost. Mid evening and they were swamped, drive-thru and inside. Patiently waiting in the slowly moving line and hearing the lady behind me telling her group that its always like this but well worth the wait. All the while the staff remained pleasant and attentive to each customer. We were able to quickly place our carry out order and was nicely provided with a military discount along with being thanked for coming in and to come back. My order (pictured) was the "Texas Double" with ribs, turkey, pinto beans, and a mix of slaw with potato salad (just to try both) along with Texas toast. **Two Thumbs up and a #Salute** I also ordered a pound cake and peach cobbler. **Two Thumbs up and a #Salute** Pros: The meat gives a true taste of hickory smoked and ribs literally lives up to the business name with such tenderness. Sides are cooked to savor your taste buds well. And the sweetness of the deserts are deeelish. And to put icing on the cake the staff was extremely friendly, patient and attentive. This has been one of my favorites for years...but something has changed. I'd guess there are are new owners (none of the old staff was around). The service was very slow, which would have been okay if the food was better. The brisket was dry and grisly - only by drenching it in sauce was it moist enough to eat. The ribs (which used to be the best in Tarrant Count) were, unfortunately, not much better - again, very dry and tough. This was my second visit in the last few weeks, so I didn't bother with any sides. The potato salad and beans I had on my last visit were not good. I'm really sorry that Off the Bone seems to have dropped so much in quality. As mentioned, it used to be one of my favorites, but after many visits, I'm moving on. There's too much good barbecue in Fort Worth to settle for mediocre. read more

I rate this place 5 stars based on the brisket and sauce alone!! My fries and onion rings were tasty as well but the highlight was absolutely the brisket!!! It's the best I've ever had. Now, bear in mind that I'm a NC boy so I'm used to pulled pork and normally go for that. But, alas, this is TEXAS, home of beef BBQ and I'll adapt when required. Take it to the next step and you've got, Gol' Durn Great!!! For once, I agree with D magazine. (I can't believe I just said that) Former Dairy Queen, or clone, has been converted into the Holy Grail of B.B.Q. Am I overstating. Am I exaggerating? Am I hyperventilating? Only one way to find out. They have a website. www.offthebonebbq.com that covers some facts and has pictures. But picture this, a half pound of tasty ribs, four big and meaty with a slab of Texas Toast for $5.69! I tried the ribs with and without sauce. I prefer sauced ribs. They are not dry, they also are not fall off the bone tender. I thing they're perfect. Especially with the sauce that's slightly sweet with a little tang. It's not a hot sauce, but there's fresh jalapeno served on the side that you can add to spice it up. There's a lot of meat on the ribs, but I ended up licking the bones in case I missed any the first go round. My wife had the Chopped Beef Sandwich ($4.69) It was a mouthful of saucy brisket soaking into a thick bun. She, of course, added jalapenos to the sandwich, giving it a little for kick. Did she like it? She practically growled at me when I asked to try a bite. They have daily specials for $5.69 that includes a sandwich drinks and fries. All the usual side dishes. The place is clean and spotless and the service couldn't have been friendlier. To say we enjoyed our lunch is as big an understatement as saying fiscal irresponsibility is the hallmark of our government. I think D magazine got it right this time. Hubby and I met another couple for dinner tonight around 6:30p. Lucky we did, as the lobby closes at 7p with the drive-thru open until 8p. Everyone had an opinion, so I will just do this review by items not by each person. Drinks - Texas sweet tea spot on, unsweetened tea tasted pretty fresh and no one had any sodas. Service - order at the counter and they brought our food to us. Served on styrofoam plate with plastic silverware in a baggie like fast food. Plenty of napkins on the table. Items available - out of turkey and pulled pork......sad. Moist brisket not even a choice. Ribs - flavorful but needed sauce. They were NOT super tender, nor was there any chance of them falling off the bone. Ham - awesome, tender, not dry in the least. Very solid choice. Sausage - cut into slices and a bit dry/mealy. No idea if the casing had the fabulous snap as they were precut. Better with sauce. Sliced beef, aka lean brisket - meh, dry, very much needed sauce. Baked potato with three meats, can't remember which, butter and sour cream and cheese - was good and filling. Mac and cheese - ok, nothing special, a little gummy. Potato salad - weird, mashed consistency with the occasional crunch of a pickle. Slightly sweet. Different, not bad, but not worth get get again. Pinto beans - a little hard, bland, wouldn't get again. Fried okra - not crispy and lacked flavor. Oddly enough, since we had to wait about 15 minutes for our food, nothing was hot! How can all of these items be lukewarm at best? So, thanks for the adventure but our quest continues! read more

You then pull it out and pick out any strange hairs and other now deliciously BBQ sauced flavored weirdness and eat like Fred Flintstone eats a chicken leg? If the answer is yes, then you've been to Off The Bone BBQ in Forest Hill, the very Off The Bone BBQ that was voted Best BBQ in Dallas by D Magazine a few months back even though it's not in Dallas, just like the Dallas Cowboys, hell why don't we just trade names with Arlington and save a lot of explanation. If you are on an on going quest for great BBQ ribs then it's worth a trip over on 20 to Off The Bone, these guys and gals know what their doing to a pig. The building has all the tell-tale signs of an old Dairy Queen with unassuming yellow and blue paint. Pulling behind the building you find the first evidence of BBQ in the making. A big pile of wood and a smoker at full tilt. Our order: No. 21- Ribs and Sliced Beef with 1/2 lb. Smoked Sausage. Our 2 sides were potato salad and beans. As we sat there in anticipation I could hear the sound of our "Q" getting chopped, ahh that sweet, sweet sound. All orders come with pickle slices, onions, jalapeño slices and toasted and buttered bread. Brisket (flat): Great smoke ring, good amount of glorious fat and a very black and ample bark. Ribs (St. Louis style spare ribs): Falling off the bone. Not a big bark but perfect texture and smokey flavor. Sausage (Pork): Nice snap with a real good flavor. Light smoke ring with a good texture. Potato Salad: Smooth and rather sweet. Had yellow/red peppers, pickles and egg. Very good. Baked Beans: Sweet as well and good. All in all a great experience and worth the trip. BBQ Crawl 5th and Final Stop Saved the best for last. About 20 minutes after we had ordered they announced they were out of ribs, forcing us to just order almost everything else on the menu - Brisket - Much like North Main's, it was quite good. The most distinct aspect of Off the Bone's BBQ is the very heavy smoke flavor in their meats. It is good for a change of pace, though some might not like how overpowering it can be. Some oak is definitely in the mix here. Has a nice smoke ring and is tender, followed by the strong, smoky flavor only an oak-fired smoke can bring. Sausage - They had two flavors, regular and hot. Both were exquisite. It is clear they make their own sausage and I would compare it to something like Holmes if you were going to try to find a similar blend at the store. Great flavor, best of the day. The casing was red and the color of the sausage itself was lighter, speckled colors of red, pink, and light brown. Not the run-of-the-mill, red-throughout-sausage that we have had most of the day. Pork Loin - One of the substitutes for the ribs. Large slices exemplified by the strong smoky flavor. One problem with smoked pork loin is that it dries out easily and this was not the case here. Bologna - (Ya you read that right, they have smoked Bologna. Our second substitute for the ribs) They gave us extra because of the long wait. Due to the texture of Bologna, this meat featured the strongest smoky taste over the other meats. Ham - Generally I stay away from smoked ham at most places since not much you can do with ham, since the meat is cured to become ham, you're essentially just recooking it. The strong smokiness in OTB's meats gave their ham a unique flavor. Sauce - this was actually my favorite. I could drink this stuff. Tangy like all of the others, then followed up by a nice bite of spice. Medium tint of brown in color. A unique and very flavorful sauce. Conclusion - The best place we went to out of the total five and didn't even get to try the ribs. Want to go back and order a huge slab of ribs, but you must get your order in early. Curbside pick-up is a joke! Sat outside in the designated area for 10 minutes...nothing! Then called, and the lady working the drive thru (the one with the eyelashes that look like trantulas) picked up the phone and laid it down without saying anything. So then I go inside and she proceeds to come off the drive thru window, refill everyones drinks thats dining in, look me up and down like how dare I attempt to bother her with a phone call, and still NOT attempt to give me my order. If that wasnt bad enough, they didnt put the cap on correctly on the pinto beans and didn't wrap them in Saran wrap like they normally do, so they spilled all over the paper bag. I normally receive decent service when I go there, but today was treated like "How dare you use curbside pick-up". Suggestion to the owner... If your staff don't want to provide curbside service, then dont offer curbside pick-up. read more

I've been ruined by 2 or 3 of the really high end BBQ places within and surrounding the DFW area, but it ain't keepin' me from trying new (to me, anyway) places, and Off the Bone had some stuff that was really good in it's own league. Went in the other day, first visit even though I drive by the place occasionally and have known about it for over a year or so. I just couldn't remember it when it was convenient. But, I knew I was going to be over by them, so I just planned my lunch around it. First time in, that usually means to overdo it. I got a three meat plate so I could try out the ribs, brisket, and sausage. Decided on pinto beans and mac n cheese as sides. Plate comes out and whoa...three good sized ribs, 4-5 medium length slices of brisket and probably over half a link of sliced sausage. Good portions on the sides, and toast, and the plate looked like it was about to cave in. Huge amount of food here. Bottle of sauce on the table. Tried the ribs first, they were tender, came off the bone easily, not dry, but not real moist, great taste, really good. Had a pretty unique taste to them, must be using a rub maybe. The brisket...looked obviously lean, (sigh) and while it had a good smoke flavor to it, I just prefer moist and fatty stuff nowadays. The brisket had a little fat on it here and there, most looked rendered fine, and while I wouldn't say it was dry, it wasn't what I would call very moist. However, I'm more than willing to say a lot of people like lean, and a lot of places make it that way, and so be it. I don't count off for that. It still tasted pretty good. The sausage was pretty good right from the start, but it tastes like it has a pretty good pepper seasoning, and it started to wear on me some. Once again, that's a preference, it was cooked well and had a good, obvious smokiness to it, really good. I usually don't care about the sides, or figure them into ratings, but the pinto beans and mac n cheese were pretty good. The beans had a little sweetness to them, which I don't really go for, but were still good (just salt them things up a little), and the mac n cheese, while it looked like nothing special, was really good. It was kinda plain, but was good, I dunno how else to explain it. I ate most of my sides on this visit, and that usually doesn't happen. I was beat, I left just a little sausage and brisket, but inhaled all the ribs. I even ate most of the toast for gawds sake. I did use a little of the sauce on the last few pieces of brisket and sausage. It's a sweet sauce, it was good. Place serves up some good stuff overall. I think it's one of the better places around town. Not high end, but basic down to earth good BBQ. I won't hesitate to come back, but I'll probably stick to mostly ribs and sides. The Dr Pepper outta the soda fountain was right on target, it tasted great, and made lunch even better.The people running the joint are friendly and service was good. My lunch with drink was just under $21 and two people could have easily split it. For a three meat plate it seemed priced just fine. One last observation, don't be put off by the reviewers who talk like this place is in a bad neighborhood, or if you're not a *ahem* certain ethnic class you should avoid it or go through the drive through. This wasn't the case on my visit. Lot's of mingling, lots of smiling, lots of all sorts of people coming in for good BBQ. While this area is old, the last few years I've been driving through it occasionally, along Riverside/Mansfield to 820 has been looking better. stopped in for lunch yesterday while working in the area. I had the rib basket special. it included 3 ribs, toast, a drink and a side for $7.99. I'm more of a spare ribs guy as opposed to baby back. the ones they serve on their rib basket special are baby back. for me, baby back ribs don't have enough meat on them so you need more than 3 to get full. however, they were nicely flavored and smokey.
