Co-worker: "So, where did you go for dinner on NYE?"
Me: "Morgan Hill."
Co-worker: "WTH is in Morgan Hill - is that were your 90 year-old sugar daddy lives?"
Me: "IF I had a sugar daddy, I wouldn't dress like a bum everyday."
Co-worker: "True, those shoes are so 2015."
Me: "Gee, thanks."
I've only been to Morgan Hill several times in my life and those times were to visit my old ex's father who left San Francisco to hide out in Morgan Hill from loan sharks. I suppose that was smart given Morgan Hill is such an under radar city. Never would I think that Morgan Hill has a fantastic restaurant from a Michelin starred chef that serves SF caliber food. Well, it does and Odeum is its name.
Odeum is a very charming restaurant (inside a certified LEED gold building) that serves farm-to-table Mediterranean cuisine. They have a beautiful patio with string lights and even though it was closed for winter, the hostess said, the manager would have a table near the entrance with heat lamps so I could bring Tater Tot. Very accommodating and dog-friendly.
For NYE, Odeum was offering a 4-Course Menu for $75 ($100 for the late seating). This was very reasonable given their regular entrée prices are quite high (e.g. $29 chicken & waffles and $49 lamp chops). I'm a cocktail girl and they run about $13-$14 here.
While perusing the NYE and deciding which items we wanted for our 4-course meal, I ordered a Hendrick's Martini ($13): http://bit.ly/2i9JeAh. It was well-made and potent, just the way I like it.
We decided to order opposing items on the NYE menu ($75 pp) so we can try a little bit of everything:
(1) Ahi Poke w/ seaweed salad, poached Asian pear, avocado, sesame, ponzu: http://bit.ly/2j4aKiz
Uber fresh and loved all the layers of flavor: salty, savory, sweet, tangy, and nutty. I eat poke on a weekly basis and this one was top-notch.
Miale w/ braised pork shoulder, savory tomatillo salsa, garlic mozzarella toast: http://bit.ly/2jqP5NN
Loved the tender pork shoulder with the garlic cheesy toast. Too bad the edge was super burnt though.
(2) Garlic Bisque w/ chicken, orzo: http://bit.ly/2jzAP9C
Good garlicky flavor but the bisque could have been thicker.
Kale & Quinoa Salad w/ dried cranberries, candied pecans, aged feta, green apples, lemon vinaigrette: http://bit.ly/2jqZitP
My least fav dish because it was mushy. I think if the quinoa were toasted, it would have provided good texture.
(3) Veal Cheeks w/ truffle scented potato purée, chili-mind sautéed zucchini: http://bit.ly/2jqVOY8
Loved this entrée! The veal cheeks were meltingly tender and packed with flavor from the rich, complex barolo sauce. The velvety smooth potato puree were the perfect accompaniment and I liked the fried onions for crunch.
Wagyu Tajima F1 Filet Mignon w/ grilled asparagus, parmesan risotto (+$10 supplement): http://bit.ly/2jqWOf2
Cooked as requested, the tender filet mignon was a beautiful rare with a nice seared crust. Nice, light marbling which yielded a beefy, buttery steak.
(4) Pecan & Chocolate Bread Pudding w/ cinnamon gelato, caramel, fresh berries: http://bit.ly/2if5jfg
Too dense for my liking.
Chocolate Lava Cake w/ vanilla gelato, candied pecans, housemade whipped cream: http://bit.ly/2icwt3d
Not a chocolate person but I was woo'd by this warm, crisp, chocolately cake with a thick, goooey center. I like that it wasn't too sweet.
I adore the staff - from the warm hostess who called to confirm my reservations to our awesome server, Jerry and the busboy, Jesus to one of the managers (?) who delivered my cocktail. Everyone was so genuinely warm and attentive. They were slammed for NYE (there was a line to get in) and Jerry always did his best to make sure we were doing ok and anticipated our needs (refills). Jesus constantly made sure the heat lamps didn't go out (even in 40 degree weather we were kept warm). The level and caliber of service was so unexpected but very much appreciated.
The dining area is cozy and rustic with exposed red brick walls and a semi-open kitchen. On a warm day, the patio is highly recommended. There's string lights which creates a really cute, romantic vibe.
While waiting for our bill, a lady asked to pet Tater.
Lady: "I didn't know Odeum was so dog-friendly."
Me: "They are!"
*LADY HITS HUSBAND*
Lady: "Why didn't we bring (dog's name which I forgot)?!?"
Husband: *Dat Al Bundy stank face*
Phew, I'm glad I'm not the only crazy dog person.
Ok back to the review. Overall, the food was a 4.25-4.5 stars (strong meat courses) but with the excellent service, super dog-friendliness, and cute ambiance, Odeum gets a glowing 5 stars. If you live in the South Bay or passing through, give this carniwhore recommended restaurant a try! read more
