What caught my attention at the get go was the strange name of this restaurant. Come to think of it, I should have asked my waiter how the name was chosen. Anyway, I came to Odd Duck for Sunday brunch where it was upsetting that the weather was a bit gloomy - it was raining and it was chilly.
Once you enter the restaurant though, that all changed. We sat on the patio where we awkwardly sat next to a party of four at the same table. I guess a more cozy environment is created but it is still a bit awkward. In the end however, it was delightfully interesting because the party next to us ordered almost the exact same dishes. A bit of small talk even resulted. Also, I noticed that all of the employees did not have dress code requirements, simply wearing casual and comfortable clothes which added onto the cozy feel. Given time to look over the menu, we were then approached by our waiter whose name was David. He was very informative and gave us the impression of a really cool and chill kind of guy. By the recommendation from our waiter, we ordered the corn dog, naan bread, the corn tortilla with goat and the carrot cake doughnut. But first, coffee.
We ordered the french press coffee where Cuvee coffee is their coffee supplier. This coffee was amazing. I do not know what kind of beans were used where the flavors were a bit tangy and had a very pleasant aftertaste.
Almond tart with almond filling and almonds sprinkled on top:
We were also approached by our waiter by a tray of baked goods where I was suckered into getting one. We got an almond tart where it was light and flaky with a thin almond filling. I personally wish that it was a bit sweeter and that there was more filling. But of course, a pastry with coffee is always satisfying.
Corn dog with chorizo verde, fried egg foam, spicy maple:
This was by far the most interesting and tasteful dish. Arriving in a cup, I was very intrigued. The cornbread was a bit dry where the egg foam necessarily complimented the cornbread, creating the perfect texture. Furthermore, the chorizo verde was wonderfully spiced.
Naan bread with pig face and curry yogurt:
This dish was beautifully presented with watermelon radishes, parsley, and mint. I thoroughly enjoyed the sweet potato that filled some parts of the bread. I do wish there was more sweet potato in every bite and the garnishes seemed to clash with each other a bit. Being a little boring, this dish did not live up to its presentation.
Corn tortilla with goat, pinto beans, fried egg, and green mole:
I was somewhat disappointed that this dish was garnished the same way as the naan bread, excluding the mint. At first bite with the goat, cheese, egg, and beans, yum. The goat had the nice texture of pulled pork. The goat was flavorful and tender and not at all mushy. However, the dish became too heavy where it was a struggle to finish.
Carrot cake doughnut with coconut rum raisin ice cream, cajeta, pecans:
I am sucker for baked goods/desserts/coffee so I rarely resist from ordering dessert. This dessert was decorated with carrot crisps and pecans which contributed to the wonderful contrast of soft and crunchy, and the ice cream contributed to the contrast of hot and cold. The doughnut's texture was a nice median between fluffy and dense where the cajeta was smoothly and wonderfully glazed over the doughnut. I have no regret whatsoever for ordering this and would definitely recommend this dessert.
Having previous work experience at a restaurant, I am extremely cognizant of the presentation of the restaurant and the quality of the service. Overall, I must say that our waiter was great and the food came out at a great pace. I felt very taken care of where dirty dishes were always quickly taken away and were immediately given new ones to use. Also, the dishes were all wonderfully presented and were very fresh. I definitely plan on coming back on a brighter and warmer day! read more
