My new favorite place! I don't eat seafood but had the 1600 deg 8oz filet mignon and it was PERFECT. I've had some great steaks but this one STOOD OUT. The sauce was great! Maybe because it was lunch time, maybe just a bad day, but I've been to OZ many times over the years and for my first visit to the new location on S. National, I was pretty disappointed. 1)The new decor is pretty stark, loud and bright giving it a very high school cafeteria feel. There are some interesting decorative touches, but for the most part it doesn't seem cohesive or even Asian in feel. A blue tile wall is sandwiched between a gray tile wall and a maroon painted wall and it all really clashes. I won't harp on this, it didn't ruin the meal, but I just feel it lacks some of the warmth and atmosphere of the last location. 2)We had reservations and arrived a few minutes early, but despite multiple open tables still waited 10 minutes or so to be seated and there really didn't seem to be an organized host system. 3)It was a cold day and I often enjoy a nice hot tea with my meal and that's what I ordered. I was brought a cup of hot water and a low quality tea bag--come on, this is an opportunity to excel, there should be a variety of teas, preferably loose leaf, but if not then high quality tea bags (ie.Mighty Leaf or similar) served in a nice ceramic tea pot. You are one of the higher end restaurants in Springfield, act like you know it. 4)Our server was just not organized and not very attentive at all. Everything ended up coming out and was right, but we had the sense he was distracted and we were not a priority. When my first cup of tea wasn't refilled I finally asked for a glass of water so I had something to drink. 5)Food was good, as usual. No complaints there. And lunch prices are pretty reasonable for what you get. I suppose that's what matters most and why my rating is 3 stars instead of just 2. Will probably give them a second chance at a dinner, maybe they step up their game compared to lunch, but seriously, the tea thing, almost makes me want to not go back. read more

I've been a loyal customer for many years, until now. After their move, the owner decided to remove their staples (menu items they served for years). We ordered anyway and the food was good. However, I'm reducing my rating as it's common knowledge for a restraint to keep items that sell. Sushi in Missouri?! Yes, this California girl had sushi in Missouri. That teaches me to "never say never". I grilled the waiter about the quality and what was freshest. I was pleasantly surprised. Their sushi options were a bit more in the "hawaiian/american" variety rather than traditional Japanese, but that's to be expected. The restaurant has a more fusion vibe anyway, so I was okay with that. The salad I ordered was also yummy. I didn't order any hot food - just salad, ahi appetizer and sushi. Came here for the 1st time last Tuesday. Ordered an app platter and some sushi rolls. The Appetizer combo while decorative, was rather disappointing. The asian glazed ribs were a tremendous letdown. They were microwaved before being served. The bone had more heat than the meat! The crab stuffed wontons had almost no flavor aside from the cream cheese, and the pot stickers were average at best. The crazy monkey roll was good, but the ocean zen roll I thought was attempting too much with so many things going on with it. To be honest, our service was great, the ambience was nice. My smoked Manhattan was THE BEST I've ever had. The food left us wanting. Probably won't be back as there are better alternatives in town that are more affordable, and frankly better tasting. read more

In anticipation of our first visit to the new site of Ocean Zen post-move, we looked forward to seeing what they had to offer beyond their new digs. First and foremost, their entrance is bright, clean, a little luxe, CA - Style (being from CA, this was clear) and spacious. On the same note, it was immediately evident that the bar and dining areas blend into one another, which I think is nice as long as there are other areas for diners to enjoy some quiet and privacy. Upon being led to our table, we could see that there was only one signature saltwater fish tank in the room and it struck me as odd why they did not add another tank or water feature given the enormous floor plan. Certainly a waterfall could have broken up the ambient noise since there is loud acoustic value in the dining room. In other words, you can hear everyone's conversation and the place can become really loud. It was only about a third full when we were there and it was already quite loud for us. The techno was a little out of place, but I know they're trying to invoke a California feel in their restaurant with a more sleek appearance. On a positive note, I really like the way the restaurant felt and smelled. Maybe people don't really know the difference, but modern dining and entertainment establishments nowadays upgrade to a superior air purification system so that the air smells really fresh and clean and they definitely installed something of that caliber in their new place. It reminds me of how clean and contemporary restaurants feel in California as opposed to a lot of them in the Midwest where they smell like smoke and feel dank. Our service experience was definitely a cut above. We've always had good service at Ocean Center at their prior location, but last night server was definitely one of the better professionals we had! He was very polite, very considerate, very reasonable in explaining the differences between the old and new buildings and really thoughtful when he recognized that we were existing customers from their old location. He even asked if it was ok to shake hands when we left, which I thought was really friendly and nice. Frankly, I agree with the other Yelpers who commented on other guests in the way they arrived. I totally agree that there should be some sort of dress code because we were dressed in business casual which is considered California casual, but there were a great number of people wearing hunting apparel, tank tops, cargo shorts, sweatpants and I think that's pretty trashy for a non-franchise, classier and pricier establishment. At one point, a few teenagers in tank tops and sweat pants shorts walked in and while they are paying customers, they look totally out of place and actually a bit embarrassing. While they may be paying customers and the restaurant has a rate to refuse service in their own right, I feel like they should have been seated elsewhere. For a few cocktails and an expensive dinner out with my husband, I would prefer not being seated next to riff-raff/McDonald's loungers. Back to the meal: our cocktails, appetizers and dinner were excellent! We ordered Cabernet, the calamari appetizer, a sushi roll, the sea bass and the macadamia nut chicken. This is all pretty standard fare for their menu because it did not change too much, but we thought everything was tasty even though my entree could have been a little bit hotter. Again, our service was excellent throughout the meal and our waiter was incredibly nice and friendly. My recommendation to others who might be sensitive to their noise level, be mindful of the time since you go there because their acoustics are limited and allow for a lot of ambient noise to become too loud. After 8:30pm, for example, is when we went and it was manageable. In light of the sound level and size, we will probably patronize then again during their off-peak hours for conversation reasons, but we will definitely be back again! My sister and brother in law went here a couple years ago. They told staff 4 different times that he had a server but allergy. Even had them double check on the ingredients on the sushi rolls. They were assured nothing they ordered had nuts. First bite on the first roll, my brother in law starts having a reaction. Hes fine, but it took him days to recover, they were told they KNEW about the nuts in the sauce but "forgot", they made my sister and brother in law pay for their full dinner order that they did not and could not eat. But they did give them a $25 gift cert for their NEXT visit.... yea... like they would ever come back. So yea, if you have an allergy, these people do not care at all, and the management will not do anything if you have a reaction. read more

What a great night out, unexpectedly good. Kyle provided us with excellent service, and great recommendations. We started out with cocktails including the M&R asti mini bottle and the cocktail "Favorite Time of the Day". The drink was strong but so flavorful! For our first course, we did the Calamari, and it was a wonderful experience. I had expected something deep-fried and to come out with legs and rings, and what we got instead was a Japanese style stir-fry of sorts with nice chunks of calamari, slices of green onions, white onions, roasted red peppers, and jalapeños, in a chili and soy type sauce. It was great to sop up the liquid with some bread as well. For dinner, we had the Dijon mustard fillet tips with mashed potatoes and mushrooms and a side of the lobster macaroni and cheese. The entrée beef dish was very Dijon mustard forward, which I really loved. However, the true star of the night was the amazing lobster macaroni and cheese. It had large shells, crispy seared top, and a great creamy sauce. It was definitely one of the best I have ever had. The prices were completely legitimate for what you got, and the presentation and service were impeccable. (while we did not get dessert, a table behind us got fresh bananas Foster done table side which is such a nice touch.) I went here for the first time for a date night and it was the worst decision I ever made. I spent over $50 on food and drinks during happy hour for two. The wines were terrible and I've had better quality box wine. The sushi was alright but nothing to brag about. There was no crab in any of the wontons we got. The chicken was on a whole new level of terrible and my date wanted to send the food back but we didn't want to cause a fuss. We had excellence service via the waitstaff. The restaurant was clean and had a romantic fancy feel. I did feel like I was being rushed out when the other waitstaff started clearing all the other tables even though it was about 70 minutes to closing. The next morning my date and I were both sick and in the bathroom constantly. I feel I would have been better off getting Chinese food at a hospital cafeteria or gas station. Beautifully decorated and very contemporary, but other patrons didn't necessarily feel the need to dress up, which was nice. Bryce, our server, was really great. We had planned on ordering 3 rolls, and he pointed out to us that we had ordered all 3 rolls with the same fish. He was great at recommending other rolls in case we didn't like the redundancy. We have only been here once but loved it! We started with the crab wontons, which weren't much different than crab rangoons at other restaurants, but did come with three different sauces drizzled on the plate and a refreshing salad garnish. My husband had two sushi rolls (I forget which ones) and liked them. I had the butterfish which was amazing -- excellent sear on the outside and a melt-in-your-mouth interior. It was paired with roasted eggplant, two sauces, and a garnish that included pickled ginger, plus steamed rice and two tempura asparagus spears on the side. The sauces were a bit rich but the ginger and white rice helped tone it down. A bit pricy for us to go here regularly (my meal was one of the less expensive seafood entrees at $25), but great for a special occasion! Our Y.A.X Sunday School class at Asbury United Methodist Church had their holiday party here. Everything about this place screamed upscale. The staff were friendly, polite, helpful, and attentive. I must say though, if you're on a budget, this is not the place to go to. Even Though this was our Adult Sunday School party, and was paid for through our class fund, my wife and I alone ate for around 80 bucks, so it's not cheap by no means. The food tasted awesome though, but like you would expect at an upscale eatery, the portions are a bit small. Like I said, our waiter was attentive, but as he got busier, it was a challenge to flag him down. Our food was served fairly fast, and was nice and hot. Almost too hot at one point when I burned my tongue on a spring roll. The place was clean, and had nice decor, but for my taste the noise level was quite high as they got busier, which conversation a challenge at times. All in all, it was a great experience, and I'm sure we'll go again when we have an extra hundred bucks hanging around. I like that they change their menu up from time to time, I even asked our waiter to find out when they get Mako Shark in again (my favorite fish to eat). Definitely a date night destination, just plan on spending a lot though, because you will. read more

Always love this place. Haven't found anything on the menu that isn't delicious and I love their Hurricane Zen drink. It is little pricier then other local restaurants but it is worth it. I see other people have left reviews complaining about not having a dress code but that is ridiculous as it's a nice restaurant but not to the point that people in shorts should be shunned, that's a bit pretentious. We went as part of a group function. The starters were delightful. The mail course not so much. My wife and I chose the first two chicken items on the menu that sounded good. Basically it was rice and vegetables surrounded by large crispy chicken nuggets swathed in a Chinese style sauce. We were surprised to be given steak knives prior to the plates being delivered. They were sure needed. I've never been served such dry, tough inedible chicken before. The rice was topped with a rather bland mango salsa. After trying several pieces of the chicken I sent it back. They did replace the meal about five minutes later. Same result - inedible chicken, way overcooked. It went back again and to their credit the manager took the item off my bill. If you want Chinese style crispy covered moist chicken I suggest KFC and add your own sauce. I have no complains against the wait staff. I won a $20 gift certificate on a local radio station a couple years ago that had NO expiration date at all on the card. My husband and I went in to a completely empty restaurant at lunch time and was told by their very young (and obviously inexperienced with customer service) manager that it was expired. We got up and left and won't be going back! We would've spent plenty more AND given a generous tip as per our usual visit to restaurants if we'd been given the courtesy to use a VALID certificate.
