There's nothing wrong about trying new restaurants. Worst case scenario for you here? You just might not like the food regardless of how pretty the restaurant looks like or how good of a service there is. Price: Expensive? I agree. It's a little overprice cause you can find the same dish in another asian restaurants at a cheaper rate. Food: All treated me well except that it didn't leave an impression for me to want to come back for more. Nothing too exciting out of the menu, just pick and eat - probably won't be the best but isn't the worst either. Out of all the food I ordered, my worth-it winner dish was the lobster mac n' cheese - hope that helps a little? Sushi: What speciality sushi isn't expensive? Their SS roll range from $12-$21. Not sure if eight pieces of sushi should ever cost $21 unless there's caviar slapped on top (which didn't.) I got the 7 Sorted Nigiri but wasn't to died for. All in all, it was okay. Let me start by saying service and atmosphere are wonderful. This is a beautiful restaurant and service has always been impeccable. Unfortunately, the food quality has really gone downhill. We got several sushi dishes and one entree-the pineapple chicken. The sushi was ok. Not great but not terrible. The rice that came with the chicken was terrible. Gluey and not cooked completely. We had dry pockets of uncooked rice. Disturbing for an Asian restaurant that high end!! It ain't cheap folks. The chicken was tough and dry. The restaurant also did away with happy hour at 5. It's now 3-5 pm. So basically if you work you'll miss it. I might try eating here again, but if the food quality is still substandard I won't pay those prices. A friend and I did some shopping and stopped in for lunch. Very pretty setup and clean looking. We both ordered an appetizer. She got the crab wonton and I ordered the crunchy spring rolls. The crab wontons were very tasty but on the sweet side. The crunchy spring rolls I liked a lot. She ordered a California roll, super crunch roll and crab nigri. She was happy with her selections. I ordered crazy monkey roll and 417 roll. The crazy monkey is very sweet. The glaze would stick to your teeth. Was not my favorite. The 417 was very good. I would order it again. Worst Birthday lunch EVER!!! First off the white chairs need a good scrubbing they are filthy!!!! So bad I seriously didn't want to sit on them. The restaurant wasn't busy went just after 1. The restaurant was not busy only 2 other tables there. I had to ask to be waited on. Then it took about 45 minutes to get our food. My daughter and I ordered the The teriyaki chicken with California roll and steamed vegetables. However not sure what they call steamed vegetables because it looked like regurgitated bird throw up. Not one thing on the plate resembled vegetables. There was so much sauce on the plate that you couldn't see what was to be teriyaki chicken. Not one time did the server ck on us. We love and eat a lot of sushi, but the sushi tonight was the worst sushi we have ever had. We didn't eat it all and the bill was nearly $100. Went in the trash. The fish didn't taste fresh. Way too many other excellent sushi places in town that are great and way cheaper and better value. Hawaii 5-0 sushi you could stop there and it would be the best sushi day you've ever had in the Midwest. Main courses!!!!!! Hold the phone you aren't ready for this it's actually a fusion of Asian seafood and Midwest beef dishes fit for the gods of Olympus. The BACON WRAPPED scallops were creamy and savory comfort like a warm towel after a shower comfort food. The macadamia nut Mahi-mahi was sweet and salty and if you don't get it you probably kick puppies... then there was the teriyaki chicken.... I understand have things have been altered but what I don't understand is how & why the food came out like yesterdays warm up. My pistachio chicken was extremely dry & the garlic mashed potatoes were barely warm. The broccoli in the potatoes looked like it was tossed in from yesterdays left-overs, being brown in color. We have been here in the past & never were we served cold & over-cooked food. To top it off, we asked if they carried bottled tonic for our cocktails & the bartender said he would check the "syrup" mix. I would not call him a bartender if he doesn't the know the difference..........there is no syrup mix! You will have one more chance as I don't walk away from what had been a good experience in the past & that we are dealing with tough times, but I would have thought with the lack of customers the food should have been hot no matter. read more

Hubby and I have been meaning to eat here for years. Every time we look at a Best Of ... list, Ocean Zen is on it. Since we aren't local, we don't get too many opportunities to eat here, but we finally made it top priority on a recent trip to Springfield. And soooo glad we did! The restaurant itself is clean with a very elegant décor. We were there for lunch, but it still looked pretty swanky with all the lights on. I'm sure the atmosphere gets even better in the evening. Our service was pretty good too. Very nice wait staff, and quick (but not too quick - a good thing) delivery of our meals. We started with a couple of appetizers. The wontons were nice and crispy with a delicious crab filling. They weren't overwhelmingly cream cheesy, which I like because sometimes the cream cheese is too much. We also had the coconut shrimp on skewers. Oh my, these were heavenly! Cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. Entrees were good as well. I went with just the Bento Box lunch with chicken. It came with rice, an Asian slaw salad (yummy dressing!), wontons and two pork gyoza (a new favorite!), 4 pieces of a California Roll and the teriyaki chicken drizzled in a white sauce. The chicken was tender and juicy and glazed perfectly. The sushi tasted very fresh and rivaled the chicken as my favorite part. I honestly could've eaten two of these Bento Boxes - every item was fabulous. Hubby got the BBQ Ribs which came with a couple of onion rings and garlic mashed potatoes topped with Asian vegetables. He liked his meal very much, although did say the barbeque sauce was more sweet than he preferred. Not a bad thing at all, just a thing to note if you're not into sweet sauces. Definitely give Ocean Zen a try if you haven't yet. It's well worth it. We will absolutely be back to try more things! read more

First off the place looks great. Modern upscale where dressing up feels right. Love the couches and decor so top marks there. When we showed at 5:30 on a Friday it was about a 45 minute wait. So making a reservation would be ideal. Noise level. I wouldn't bring it up before food but we got both barrels of it. It was loud. Music was pumped in, so people talked louder, and everything drones to a mid roar. No so much that you can't hear the wait staff but you might have to have something repeated now and then. We had the appetizer sampler. Good all around with the spring rolls and Mongolian BBQ getting stars as our favorites. We both ordered the Salmon. It came with a sweet/savory glaze, jumbo scallop, mashed potatoes, carrots, and tempura fried avocado. Mine ordered medium, hers ordered well done. Both came out well done. Not ruinously bad bad but was let down a bit considering the get it right the first time prices. I probably could have gotten it fixed but didn't feel like hassling an already busy kitchen or wait another 25-30 for a refire. First time at the new location and this place just opened so things might be a little off as they get going. We will be back to give them another try. People like this crap? Overpriced junk food. The place looks posh but food is to be desired. Who has Cesar salad at a sushi/Asian place, you may ask? Why, Ocean Zen. It came drenched in dressing. I had to return the salad. I guess you don't come to a sushi/Asian restaurant expecting stir fry bok Choy. Mistake #1. Perhaps I am the only one eating a Cesar salad with chopsticks. Disappointingly weird. The soft shell crab attempts to look cool in its blanket of stir fired jalapeño, pepper garlic mush but was unfortunately swimming in grease. No, not Grease Lightning. The sushi rolls come also heavily drenched in "sauce". It is blanketed by a crunchy fuzz, which looks like fried panco. I have a suspicion the sauce is really mayonnaise disguised as sauce. It sort of has the same consistency with the sauce that came with the soft shell crap, which also, suspiciously, looks like mayonnaise only colored orange (siracha? Which is made in LA). I looked at the ingredients (avocado, cucumber, river eel) and instantly thought: ooohhhh healthy! Mistake #2. The saving grace of the roll - real (! :-0) kani (crab). The only thing I really did like: the imported Australian Syrah. So much for coming here in search of vegetables. America, your taste buds suck. And you need to eat more vegetables. I had looked into four other places before deciding to try Ocean Zen out; they were all closed but Ocean Zen had the most convenient hours. I had just arrived for a business trip and was craving sushi. It was definitely meant to be! The atmosphere is lovely. I felt a bit underdressed but the quality of the food, the welcoming and beautiful environment, and the very reasonable pricing led to an amazing first experience. I believe this place would easily be an every Friday night thing if I lived in Springfield. I believe my server was Jake(sorry if not) but he was wonderful! Made excellent recommendations about the menu, local places in town, and provided exceptional service. I will request him again when I am back in town next month. Their house made wasabi is mouthwatering. It isn't overpowering and almost has a sense of sweetness but still packed a punch. I ordered a California roll and another one I can't remember but both were amazing. It was probably one of the best California rolls I've ever had. I would probably give Ocean Zen a 3.5 but Yelp won't let me. I have actually never been inside the restaurant at their new location. I only ever come for to-go sushi. I enjoy the crazy monkey roll (it has red velvet crumbles and sriracha sauce on top) and the spicy tuna roll (if you've had one you've had them all) the most at this establishment. Recently I got the shrimp tempura roll and the crazy roll. Both items were not as flavorful as I would have wanted and the tempura was unimpressive. I think it might have been that the tempura was not as good by the time I got them home. Maybe it was a bit soggy? I would proBably be willing to try one of these rolls in the restaurant in the future to see if it was just the drive home that made them not as tasty. The prices for what you get for the sushi is my main complaint. Maybe I don't really understand good sushi (I mean, I live in Missouri...not exactly coastal) but I think for the price, the sushi you can get at some other places in town is better. I have been meaning to go inside and eat a proper meal but my life is too chaotic sometimes for that. I would also eventually like to try some of the other items on the menu in the future as well. Overall, the to-go sushi is convenient. Definitely try the crazy monkey roll (13.95ish I think) and maybe don't get the tempura if you are getting it to go. read more

A top notch restaurant in the Springfield area. I have always been pleased with my orders every time I go. The service is attentive and polite. This is a great date night place or lunch place with the girlfriends. Even with the COVID restrictions going on now, I have had a great experience with their drive thru. Just call and put your order in, then drive right up and it's ready. My orders have been packaged nicely so they were hot and still even pretty looking when I got them home! We started with a round of custom made drinks. Our favorite was the Coco Bongo!
