We had an amazing time here during our four-day stay. We were able to rent one of the Condominiums as my boyfriend knows several owners in the community. We rented a 1-bedroom 1-bath condominium on the water so we were able to put our paddle boards in and enjoy the canals. It looks like every house and Condominium is on the water. There are so many activities here for adults.; golf, tennis, pickleball, boating, snorkeling, yoga. Etc. We went snorkeling leaving from their Marina which was great. Saw lots of schools of fish. I also took a cardio tennis clinic one morning which was well-run and fun. There are small pools in each section of the development and two large pools at the main resort area with bar service and access to the beach. The food was amazing everywhere we ate. There are lots of restaurants to choose from. We ate at Gianni's one night and had delicious homemade pasta and osso buco. One night we walked over to the ice cream store and had mint chocolate chip and mocha chip ice cream that was very good. Not sure where they get their ice cream from. Can't wait to come back here for more fun. read more

A huge shout out to Ashley at the front desk, management, give her a raise please! We were first taken to a room that had a very strong moldy smell and then tried a "downgrade" to another room. When we saw the beautiful rooms at the Dolphin building, we asked to see if we could be moved there.....the 3rd room we tried. Ashley worked her magic and moved us there and never made us feel badly that we were requesting this. The Dolphin is beautiful and we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, the golf is great. I stayed at Ocean Reef for an extended period of time and found the club to be very nice. There is a ton of amenities at Ocean Reef including two tennis facilities, two golf courses, a Fishing Village with a variety of shops and stores, Buccaneer Island and a variety of restaurants. I'm a competitive tennis player who plays in many tournaments and I found the tennis facilities to be very nice. The Racquet Club, which is a private club is very nice and has a large amount of Har-Tru courts. They seemed to be well cared for, but they were fairly dusty because of the Florida humidity and heat. The Tennis and Health Club at Ocean Reef, which is open to the general public has around 10 Har-Tru courts as well as a couple of pickle ball courts. There are a variety of great food options at Ocean Reef including the Islander, CH Prime and the Burgee Bar. There are plenty of more casual options too including the grill at Buccaneer Island and Reef Treats, which sells a variety of dessert items including ice cream and chocolate covered strawberries. I particularly loved the chicken fingers and fries at Buccaneer Island. They chicken was tender and the crinkle cut fries were crispy and tasty. Ocean Reef has plenty of other activities including a Rec Center wwith video games, some pool tables and some ping pong tables. It seemed to be very popular with many of the kids. There is also a nature center at Ocean Reef with some small animals and a 75 pound tortoise. I love animals so that always nice! Many of the restaurants, houses and other attractions including the tennis centers and pools are far away from each other, which requires you to have a golf cart. Luckily, Ocean Reef has them available to rent. The entire Ocean Reef Club is secured and there are security guards at the front who check you in. There is also a police force and fire department at Ocean Reef to keep everything and everyone safe and in order. Altogether, Ocean Reef Club is a really beautiful place in the Florida Keys, which provides a fun and relaxing atmosphere. read more

The hotel rooms are not well-maintained, not upgraded, and not very clean. The amenities are really nice. However, expect to be treated very poorly, your money spends everywhere the same. Excellent stay and experience. The members and staff alike were very welcoming and friendly. A few staff members that stood out were Kristine at the rec center, Superman and Molly at Buccaneer Island. Andreaux at the Scavenger Hunt was amazing. That kid is a work-a-holic and always there with a smile and willing to assist. The condo we stayed in could use some upgrades but it was very pleasant overall with nice views. The food at the restaurants on property was very good also. Yes, a little pricey but totally worth it for the service and the ambiance. We ordered room service from Gianni's and the food and service was outstanding. Will definitely visit again if I get invited. read more

The grounds itself are gorgeous but the service is subpar. Pools, docks, and rooms were very nice and clean. Our issue with more so with the food and service. I'd say 80% of our food here was just mediocre. The best food was from the patio restaurant by the pool called Palm Court. Unfortunately for the extreme prices you pay here, service should be exceptional and all food on the property should be well above mediocre. We played a round of a golf and that cost almost 500$ for one guy. For these prices I expect much better service and for that reason I wouldn't be inclined to return. read more

We are lucky enough to be able to stay during some summer weekends. It's one of our favorite mini weekend getaways. The club has plenty todo, variety of restaurants options, great hotels/ homes, outdoor activities and some light shopping. We normally spend the day on the boat or the pool and have a meal at either islander or the raw bar. We normally rent a 1 bedroom condo and have a kitchen for snacks or in between meals. If your wallet can hold it, This place is great, The club is like a military base, they have everything, like a private airport, bank, supermarket, clothing store, golf courses, marina, lawyers, plumbers,etc. This place is a hide out for the super wealthy people that lands in their private jet next to their yacht on their multimillion beach house. Now, the hotel is so,so. Service is awesome but the rooms are just ok. One thing I didn't like is that tips are included in everything. I wonder why??, if this place is for people with deep pockets, why they need to include mandatory tips. Other turn off was the continental breakfast. For the price of $35.00 I will expect more items to choose, it was very limited. Even Holiday inn hotels have more items for breakfast. Other issue is that you need to mandatory rent a golf cart to go around the club. Since restaurants are far away from the hotel rooms. Walking is out of the question and if you use your vehicle good look finding parking. Pool is small and overcrowded, for the size of the resort. Tons of kids in which I don't mind, but remember there's a lot of wealthy people that they think that the pool is theirs (snobs). So there are always issues with the availability lounge chairs and all the "real state" that they reserve so their kids can play. Now, if you are a party animal, this is not your place for vacationing. At 10:00 pm there is nothing here, this place becomes quieter than a cemetery. I mean it. You can hear a cricket one mile away. Need to know that they have a very strict dress code, intentionally with the high prices, to target an specific " cultured" people. read more

Easily one of the nicest and most private communities/resorts in the world. Where else can you find a place that its own airport, hospital, golf courses, restaurants, marina, tennis courts, theater, library, art museum, hotels and a state of the art fitness and spa center. During season you will also be in the same community as some of the wealthiest people in America. However, because of that it guards privacy as a sacred pledge. So while Presidents and world leaders often visit, you will rarely see it mentioned in the media. Maybe another thing to mention is that privacy comes at a price, so don't expect to see special discounts on Priceline, although coming during the off-season can make it less expensive. read more

As a resort, this place is average at most. Drinks and food are definitely below average. But what really shocked me is that one of the members complained about the size of my bathing suit (which was a Brazilian "triangle" style bottom, not a thong and not indecent in any way, as I normally dress quite conservatively in general). The staff made my friend and I cover up our bottoms saying that our outfits "violated" their full coverage policy, but there were definitely other women there wearing similar styles and nobody approached them (I have a feeling it was because they were white). The way the staff approached my friend and I was embarrassing and humiliating, so much so that other members of the club who heard them (because you could hear them reprehending us) came to talk to us afterwards to give us support. I could see that most people there were as shocked as we were about what was happening, but yet the club staff insisted that we covered up, making us feel embarrassed for something we shouldn't be feeling embarrassed for at all. I wonder if they would say something about a white male wearing a speedo. When I pointed that other women were also wearing similar bathing suit styles, the manager told me "but I'm not talking about them, I'm talking about you". Of course he wasn't taking about them, they were white and less curvy. As a marketing professional myself, I would say that this type of situation is not only rude, it's also extremely hurtful for business, for I would NEVER recommend this place to a friend, and in 20 or 30 years, when I become the older lady they will be marketing for, I will never choose this as my go to club. Even right now, I am a person who definitely has the means to have a membership at ocean reef, but I wouldn't. This is a bridge they have burned, all because of a bikini bottom. If you want a white-only place with policies from 1950 and below average drinks and food, this is your club. If you want to be treated with respect, I recommend the Soho House or any of the many other clubs around South Florida. Disappointing, offensive, ultra conservative, sexist, elitist and outdated. read more

Loving this place... In town for a conference and thought this was going to be a "club." It's a small town with shops, medical center, shopping, marinas and even a small private airport. It seems there is something for everyone here...pools, beach, golf, fishing, diving, and I'm sure there are more. It's easy to get to...about an hour from Miami International Airport and easy to find. Headed south on 95 and made 2 lefts. There is a bridge that has a $1 toll, wanted to give you a heads up on that. You don't need a wallet; all purchases, at least within the club, are done using your room key. Including tips. The room is amazing, see the pix. I'm on the first floor so I have a patio off of my room. Spent the afternoon reading a book while nursing a Diet Coke. Amenities in the room, Nespresso coffee machine, yoga mats with some light weights and the coconut lime toiletries are really nice. Free wi-fi...currently "yelping" outside the conference room. The property is large so you may want to rent a golf cart but I'm finding that some things on the map aren't as far as they seem. Haven't really found anything negative, if you've read my other reviews I can really put places on "blast." I did hear one comment...the pool was too warm...hey, it's Florida. The beach is nice and has shaded areas for those that combust after 15 minutes in the sun. There is a little lagoon that isn't connected to the ocean, seems like a good place for the kids; not really sure of the depth. While I'm here by myself, I'd rate this a good place for families to visit. If you want to venture off the property and head south to the lower keys, this is a good jumping off point. read more

We stayed here for a week and it was wonderful. A few things I think are ridiculous though. First we ate lunch at an open air restaurant on the water with gorgeous views but they would not allow my husband to be seated and served because he was wearing a tank top, yet several women were wearing tank tops as well as just bikinis with body parts hanging out were seated and served but he had to either wear a dirty smelly long sleeve collared shirt they offered or he could go back to our room and changed. Why??? I guess you don't want to see men's armpits but don't mind seeing women's breasts and butts hanging out. Stupid!!! Pool areas are beautiful, love the enforcement of the rule for adults only pool, thank you!! Yoga on the beach was fantastic!! Bartenders at the circle bar in the middle of the pools and lagoon make terrific drinks!!! And the fish tacos...some of the best we've ever had. Some of the servers ate so nice and friendly and some are rather snobby, I guess that's normal Gift shop is on the small side but still had a nice little selection read more

This resort is very nice. Although is member's only, we stayed for a business trip and will be returning in four months. We enjoyed the pool area and just tooling around on a golf cart. The rooms in the Marlin building are spacious and quiet. Perfect location to enjoy day trips into Key Largo. This is an excellent choice for either a group meeting or a family vacation. It is a little different from a typical resort in that this is a members club and is definitely geared towards members. The facilities, restaurants, and amenities are all first class and you are bound to have a great time Beautiful yacht club and golf courses are manicured to perfection. Both Dolphin and Hammock courses are challenging and fun to play. Dolphin is longer and Hammock being shorter is extremely narrow but proves just as challenging. Play both if you're able. Food, drinks, and service is second to none. Buccaneer Island is a great place for kids and adults. Great shopping options. Great restaurants. Grocery store on property is a great option.Would be even nicer if they had a real beach vs. a lagoon beach. Great food, and two amazing pools, one being an infinity pool. They also have kayaks, SUP's to rent, a sand volleyball court and great food and drinks at the poolside bar. There is also a dive shop in fisher's village and had a great experience with them as well. Is pricey but if you can afford it or looking for a once in a lifetime getaway, it's a great place! Several onsite restaurants. There are lots of shops, a grocery store, ice cream shop, deep sea fishing charters, Hobie cat and kayak rentals and more. Golf carts are complimentary to get around the large club. Rooms in the Inn were $399 per night, while the condo was $499 per night (lots of resort taxes though)! Room Tip: If staying in the Inn, request the Dolphin. Close to everything. read more

I've stayed here twice for a conference, each time in the summer. I'd encourage visitors to stay in cooler seasons because the mosquitoes have been horrible on both occasions. For a place that charges so much, I would expect it to wreak of citronella. Lots of bites! The rooms we had each year were spacious. We had a kitchen, large bathroom with a washer and dryer, and a separate bedroom. Our family of four shared the space, and the pullout sofa bed was so uncomfortable. I didn't sleep the entire weekend, and when we called for rollaways or mattress pads, they were unable to provide any assistance. The pool area was nice, and the whole Ocean Reef area is very secluded which makes for a very nice vacation. They have an area of restaurants and a market, and everyone drives around on golf carts. The view from the club house at the golf course is beautiful at sunset. Overall, a vacation is a vacation and when I'm with my family, I'll always have a good time, but for the type of place this is, I definitely expected more from Ocean Reef. read more

It's a (segre)gated community, the dress code is meant to signal who does or does not belong, and the marketing is full of dog whistle racism. Well, it does not get much nicer than this. An exclusive community hidden far beyond the mangroves in Key Largo rests Ocean Reef Club (or, "the Club" to the locals). It's a beautiful, if pricey, enclave for the the uber-well-to-do, celebrities, hedge fun managers and probably international ne'er do wells of all stripes. Members-only gives you access to private stores, private churches, a private hospital, private police force, and even it's own private air-strip. In fact, the Club doesn't even accept traditional money...you have to be a member in order to access your own private credit account. It's beautiful and secluded. Haven't ever heard of it? There's a reason for that. The average mortal likely can't afford the pricey annual member-ship dues. And as would be in keeping with a roster of celebs, dignitaries and heads of state, they eschew publicity. If you have to ask where it is - you don't belong, and therefore likely aren't welcome. And given the miles-long dirt road leading to the hidden entrance and guard gate...it's highly unlikely someone would even stumble across it, even if by accident. You really do have to know where it is to find it. If and when the proverbial Shit Hits the Fan and Western Civilization goes down in flames and anarchy...I imagine this private enclave will carry on as usual. If and when the nukes, rest assured that the Royal Family of Saud and Oprah Winfrey will have a truly beautiful place to enjoy the sunset years. read more

I have been in many exclusive clubs in South Florida and Ocean Reef is not one I would recommend. I had a bad experience with staff being discriminated against wearing my Brazilian baiting suit cut (which is not a tong ) . The staff approach my cousin and I mainly addressing me about wearing inappropriate attire for the pool. They actually told me that my baiting suit didn't cover my whole butt . And they had a whole butt coverage policy . There were other members at the pool that were hearing the staff comments and they thought that was an absurd . My cousin and I were very embarrassed. When I ask what they want us to do they told me : "Just try to hide and cover up" . We saw other members wearing similar bikini cuts as well which it made us wonder if we were being discriminated against for being Brazilian. read more

Is it not that it is fancy, or the beaches are awesome, or the food is amazing - it is just quiet and peaceful. People come to Ocean Reef to chill out and enjoy the facilities. My top things to do at Ocean Reef: ...Chill with my kids ...Kayak through the mangroves ...Go reef fishing ...Fish off a dock ...Have a great drink ...Swim in the pool ...Enjoy a lunch out doors - hit the make your own Bloody Mary bar ...Meet nice people ...Eat at the raw bar ...Walk the docks and meet more people It is actually closer than you might think. It takes about an hour from Miami and the drive down Card Sound Road is amazing. If you are aventurous, you can stop at Alabama Jacks on the way. This is a private members club, so you will need to join, or know a member. The hotel on property is very nice, I'd say a 3 1/2 star. All the restaurants are above average. The Raw Bar is probably the most best place to grab a lunch and a nice drink. The 3 things that stand out the most is that it is a secure place, unpretentious and very well maintained. read more

This was definitely not the place to come for rest and relaxation. I'm ready to go home to rest up this weekend before going back to work on Monday. Grounds were immaculately maintained. The foliage was beautiful! For the most part, the staff we had encountered were great and very customer service-oriented. If you're a guest, you're only allowed to use your ocean reef room card for all purchases including restaurant meals. Service around the pool on Buccaneer Island was fantastic! We loved Jamye, Thea, Bianca and the guys! It was very noisy and the disruptions were plentiful. Several times each day on Buccaneer Island, there were large deliveries, paddle boat switchout involving a large F350 plowing through the tiny beach area that exists, power washing beach chairs and pool cleaning prime time, trimming palm trees with loud chain saws, minibar checks at the most inopportune times, engineering replacing air filters, inconsistent housekeeping services, parties happening outside your hotel room with very loud music and screaming drunks. Staff only knock once before barging into your room...It allowed for some really awkward encounters when getting out of the shower. I found the rationing of soap, shampoo and conditioner interesting. I should also mention my spa experience. I had booked a 50 minute facial, which was listed in the book at $150. The esthetician had mentioned that she'd recommend the hydrating facial or the sea kelp. I choose the sea kelp. Not once did she mention that the sea kelp mask was a $50 up charge! They add automatic gratuity to everything! $238 for a lousy 48 minute facial was highway robbery. A $38 tip for a crap job really rubbed me the wrong way. The Christmas tree lighting ceremony was a joke! It began at 6pm on December 12th in the Fishing Village with the Academy choir. I'd be embarrassed to send my kids to The Academy because of the way the choir performed. The kids didn't even know the lyrics to the most basic of Christmas carols, such as Jingle Bells. The entire performance was awful. The tree lighting actually occurred about 6:30. We left the tree lighting, went to dinner, then came back to Fishing Village an hour later to find the tree lights off. We had wanted to take a photo by the tree. About 8:20pm, a silver Dodge Ram pulled up, and a couple began disassembling the tree. I've never heard of this happening. It was quite puzzling. This didn't even compare to other tree lighting ceremonies we've attended. If you're looking for a beautiful sandy beach leading to the ocean, this isn't the place. They actually don't have much of a nice beach at all. You can't really swim in the ocean because there are boulders on the perimeter. There's a lagoon, but I wouldn't swim in there if someone paid me. They also have some non-motorized water sport rentals, but they weren't available anytime this week. We certainly won't be back to this place, nor would we ever considering becoming members. read more

As others have mentioned, Ocean Reef is a tropical haven that is accessible only to "members" and their guests. However, you can stay here if your organization holds a conference/meeting here. That's how I've been able to stay here -- through a conference. All the times I've stayed here I felt like I had truly escaped from reality and I've also forgotten that I'm still in the U.S.A. With this kind of luxury, it's hard not to think you are at a posh all-inclusive resort in the Bahamas or Jamaica. The staff at Ocean Reef come from all part of the world (like a cruise ship, the name tags reflect their country of origin) and are trained to provide excellent customer service. Ocean Reef is "cash less" which means you must charge everything on your room card. I find it becomes a little like Vegas where "money isn't real" because you hardly notice you are paying $10 for each pina colada until your grand enormous tab at check out! So you must come prepared to drop a wad of cash and just sit there at the pool and relax about it! There is one pool that has two lap lanes and becomes "adults only" after 3 pm. All the food I tried at the beach grill, Islander restaurant and Burgee Bar grill was excellent. You do feel trapped in this little enclave since you have to drive a distance on card sound road in order to enter and leave the resort. Alternatively, some of the rooms offer refrigerators and you can rent a condo so you can possibly cook your own meals. The "fishing village" offers a nice assortment of shopping. The spa offers services that are great, but not the spa atmosphere that one gets at day spas (no steam room or sauna). This is a great place to bring kids. There are lots of kids activities and they can run around in the pool area or saltwater lagoon (if they are old enough), while the adults can relax in the same area doing their own thing. Aside from the kids' activities, the resort can also arrange for eco-guided kayak tours, fishing and snorkeling trips. Sailing lessons are offered as well. Essentially you have everything you need to escape from reality and pretend live like the rich and famous while attending a conference! What I wouldn't give to be able to afford my own jet to land on the private air strip at Ocean Reef, drive my own custom golf cart and stay in my tropical house! If you can't do that -- just book your next convention there and escape for a couple of days! read more

Stayed at Yachtsman Inn. Checked in and went to our room. We were greeted by a bathroom sink that was full with dirty water and wouldnt drain. Called and engineering came and fixed it. Millionaires playground, yeah makes you feel like you should live like this everyday. Get a hotel on the lagoon, rent a golf cart to cruise around in or just dock the boat and invite every one of your friends. New Years here is ridiculous, I've gone just about every year and the party is totally worth it. You will shut down the Burgee bar, so make sure you have the bar stocked so you can keep the party going. They got it all, golf, fishing, tennis, or just lounging by the pool.... read more

Ocean Reef is about what you would expect from a private club. It's a pristine tropical utopia where the main form of transportation is golf cart, there are lots of kids, everything is perfectly kept up, food is overpriced, and nearly everyone is white and middl-eaged. If you don't own property there, you can stay in the hotel or rent out a house, as we (actually my sister) did. I have no idea what she paid for 5 nights in our 4 bedroom house but I heard that others paid $1200 a night for a 6 bedroom. The house was nice enough, though the provided pots and pans were scratched to hell, the jacuzzi never warned up, and some of the furniture was really worn. The club itself is nice, with several restuarants, a golf course, spa, boat and bike rentals, fitness center, and kids club with activities. If you are traveling with a family and really just want to relax, it would be a good place to come. If you don't golf or fish though, prepare to get bored after a day or two. The food was pretty good but of course overpriced($10 at least for mixed drinks, $20 chicken salads, $11 hot dogs) but if you can afford to stay here, you probably won't be concerned.
