- Disappointing Stay, Misleading Photos, Poor Response from Management My wife and I stayed in the La Palma Suite for her birthday getaway. We chose this property based on the photographs shown online and the overwhelmingly positive reviews. Unfortunately, our actual experience was very different. The biggest issue was that the room we received did not reflect the condition portrayed in the photos. While it appears the property may have been renovated years ago, much of what we found showed significant wear and deferred maintenance. Some of the issues we encountered included: * A bed that creaked loudly with virtually any movement, making it difficult to sleep. * Shower water that never became truly hot and had very low water pressure. * Mold or mildew buildup visible beneath the sink rim and inside the sink overflow opening. * Rust and corrosion on bathroom fixtures. * Upholstered furniture that was stained, worn, and damaged. * A closet door that would not properly close because it was off track. * Exterior areas that looked noticeably different from the photographs used in advertising. * General cleanliness and maintenance concerns throughout the suite. After reporting the bed issue, management acknowledged the problem and offered to move us to another room with a new mattress. We packed our belongings and prepared to move. However, before the move could occur, the replacement room was reassigned to another guest. We were later informed that because we had not responded quickly enough, the room was no longer available. What disappointed me most was not simply the condition of the room, but the lack of meaningful resolution after management recognized there was a problem. Once a room change was offered, I believe it should have been held until direct contact was made with the guest. To be fair, my wife and I still enjoyed our time in the Florida Keys and had a wonderful birthday celebration. The location is beautiful. However, the accommodations themselves did not meet the expectations created by the property's marketing photographs, and management's handling of the situation left us disappointed. I encourage future guests to look carefully at recent traveler photos and ask questions about the current condition of the specific room they are booking before making a reservation. read more

What a beautiful property! We stayed there for 1 night before our trip to key west. I wish I booked for longer. It was very relaxing as they have their own beach with free kayaks and paddle boards. Next door is their sister suite that you can use the pool and bikes. It was very private. There are probably only 6 rooms max. My stay there I did not see one person. I will be going back! The photos on the website are very deceiving. This property should never be called a resort. My husband and I spent a week traveling The Keys and stayed in hotels in Key West, Marathon, Islamorada , and finished in Key Largo before flying home. This "motel" didn't even come close to matching the other resorts we stayed in on our vacation (at roughly the same rate). It was a terrible way to end a great week. For the price, one wouldn't expect broken tiles in the shower, sinks that didn't drain, toilets that wouldn't flush, outdated furniture and an AC that couldn't keep up with the 80 degree temps outside. I stayed at Azul Del Mar with my girlfriend in the La Palma suite for two nights. It was such a wonderful stay in a very cozy and clean room. The room looked a little smaller than in the pictures but we were still satisfied. The beds were comfortable and the A/C was good. They provided free sodas and other drinks in the mini fridge and coffee pods with a keurig machine. The hotel is self-check in so that made things really easy. They just give you a code to get in. My girlfriend and I went paddle boarding in the morning with the paddle boards that were provided by Azul Del Mar. It was so fun and allowed us to save money and still do something fun in the ocean. I definitely recommend this hotel/resort if you have things to do in Key Largo. read more

Loved my 3 days here! Easy walking access to restaurants with great food and live music. The hotel is old but exceptionally clean which matters most to me. The breakfast has a lot of variety but if you're looking for fresh cooked eggs and protein it is not that. I enjoyed it regardless . . plenty of packaged items to choose from and good coffee. Staff are very friendly and loved the little gift shop with huge variety of gifts and/or essentials. There is plenty of choices of rental boats/boat trips right on the marina. A little hidden respite off the main highway. Beautiful trees and a simple yet pretty outdoor setup of lounging and picnic areas. The resort signage is small and hard to see (as suggested by other reviewers) in part due to the font used but it IS there. While it is pricey and may not be worth it for some, remember you're mainly paying for location (like most places in the keys) and the tranquility that this place has in spades is unlike many other places. It is obvious the place has tried to do some sprucing up and remodeling in recent years and while it could have more dwelling amenities like a TV in the bedroom, this place feels like and is more a retreat vs a full service big hotel operation. So it kind of comes down to what you're wanting and knowing what this is vs is not. There is a small amount of mildew staining in the showers but it appears this is due to the typing of plaster they used on the tiling vs it not being cleaned regularly as the rest of the place was very tidy. Overall, it is a lovely, tranquil little place with nice people and a helpful, friendly front desk who is clear about their hours, availability and after hours contact. They have a nice reciprocal relationship with the next door Amoray resort which gives you access to their pool and decent food truck operation. read more

Stayed about 4 nights at Azul. Upon arrival we noticed the place was a bit older which is normal for the Keys. It does have nice shabby feel to it. Loved the area backing to the water and the dock. The room really looked better in the pictures. It was very humid and musty. We had an issue with our shower not having high water pressure upon arrival and by day 3 of stay it was worse with only one drizzle coming out. That ended up needing to be more repair and we were offered showers in Amoray Dive that were accessed outside. Those bathroom had not been cleaned well and were a major turn off. One shower was difficult to turn on and the other had pee all over the toilet. Overall the experience was okay we ended up leaving early due to the shower issue. The view was nice. The staff Kim and Natalie were very attentive and Maria was a great house keeper. We will end up staying somewhere else when coming to the Keys again. read more

The "resort" isn't as nice as the photos would lead you to believe. I chose the Azul because it looked like a beautiful, romantic experience, but it fell far short of expectations. We stayed in the Aquamarina suite two nights in January, 2023. Before booking, be aware of the following: We found it shabby: there was cracked plaster in the bedroom, no ceiling fans, screens missing or with holes, some windows bolted shut, chipped kitchen sink, etc. The suite was spacious however, the bathroom was very small and awkward. Room Service is listed on the website, but not available. When questioned, Management said that Room Service meant Housekeeping not food service. The beach is nice but small and fenced off on both sides so you can sit but not walk on the beach. Chemical smelling: the room smelled of sanitizer and strongly scented fabric softener. It was difficult to air out due to the lack of fans and window screens. read more

My husband and I spend the 4th of July week at azul del mar. I loved the scenery. The quiet. That it only has 6 suites(less people). We watched the fireworks from the dock. The room, aquamarina, was great! We utilized the pool next door, which unfortunately was warm. REALLY warm, but i like the ability to use it. Its in a great location. The only thing I would suggest to the owners is maybe a better way to spot the driveway. At night it's easier bc of the little blue lights at the opening of the driveway. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet, private getaway in key largo. read more

The photos online look much better than the rooms. Our room was tiny and had no window. It felt like a prison cell. There was also mold in the bathroom and there is no staff onsite. Our heater didn't work and it was cold and rainy. Only after checking in and prepaying the entire stay, (over $400 a night) did we see how awful it was. Our stay lasted 15 minutes we had no regret leaving and forfeited our money. I highly recommend never staying there. read more

We loved it here! It was clean, quaint and included so many nice little extras! Soda and water in the fridge, a wide variety of coffee and teas, free kayak and paddle boards to use. A quiet beach to relax on, and a great spot to watch the subset. The AC worked well and it had a nice little kitchenette with plates, silverware and a range of glasses for use. We would definitely stay here again! I saw someone said they paid $500 a night, I definitely would not pay that for this but I believe we paid around $200 a night and thought that was wonderful for what we got! The people were nice, the room was clean, they did turndown service daily and had a washer and dryer on site with laundry soap and dryer sheets for us to use for free which was fantastic because we had just gotten off of a 10 day cruise. There is a decided European flair to the atmosphere and furnishings, you could swear you are in Spain until you pull out onto route 1. Close to John Pennekamp state park which is a MUST for one day. Sundowners was great for the sunset. Skip Big Chill unless you like fraternity style beach parties. If I return to the keys I would stay here again and highly recommend to anyone (traveling without kids, that is...)! read more

First, I have to say that we BID on Priceline and acquired this "ADULT ONLY" resort. The only problem is we were coming with our non-adult offspring. FYI, when bidding on a hotel, picking an adult only or a family friendly hotel, is never an option. I called the resort after reading this information on the hotel's website. After explaining how I bid and acquired this hotel on Priceline, Dominic gave us the "go signal" to come. Dominic and Carol were hospitable. We did try to keep our minor out of site from other guests to respect the resort's adult only policy. It was not hard to do as the resort did not have a pool and the small property beach was not ideal for swimming. Instead, we made the Atlantic Ocean our playground. On our short weekend here, we were able to do a snorkeling trip at John Pennekamp State Park. It is easily one of the best snorkeling trip we've had in a day (We've snorkeled many places). We also went fishing with Sailor's Choice and had a fantastic family fishing day. Check out at Azul is 11. Our fishing trip was over 1:30. We went back to the resort to use their outdoor shower. Dominic, the owner, gave us the boathouse to shower. Because of this, we didn't have to drive over 4 hours home in fish stench!!! Azul Del Mar is a small, all-suite cozy property. Please see pictures posted. Given the chance to come here with my significant other, I would come back again and again!!! This location is superb. We saw the most beautiful sunset off this property upon arrival. Pennekamp and fishing charters are within 3-5 miles away. This is an awesome gem in Key Largo. We had the Royale Suite over looking the ocean. It's a no kids hotel (Amen) where you can just relax and kick back. The landscaping is gorgeous. There are a few hammocks around and a nice little pier. A few little huts you can hang out in also. The room itself was adorable. Nice little dining space in the very updated kitchen. Bed was super comfy and the bathroom was huge with a very large tub. Very clean also. I highly recommend this place! It is extremely private and romantic. Just book it you wont regret it. More of a motel than a resort. The room was old with rust on the lamps and chipped tiles in the 'shower' if you could call it that. The water pressure is like a drinking water fountain. The staff acts as if they'd rather be anywhere else. The manager Kim is condescending and could not care less if guests are unhappy. Run down property. My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon in early September and Azul was perfect! We were a little behind schedule on getting the hotel, Dominic called us to make sure we were okay and if we needed directions. I was already impressed and I haven't even made it the property. You do not get that type of customer service anywhere! When we finally get there, Dominic shows us around every little bit of the property and then took us to our room. The room is amazing! We stayed in the Aquamarina, which is on the second floor, and it has a beautiful view of the water. The rooms have everything you need in it; microwave, fridge, sink, dishwasher, plates and cups. We didn't use them much because we ate out everyday. Our room had a sun room that looked out to grassy area and then the water. When we were there it was only about 2 other couples there. No kids! You have a private beach and a dock to watch the sunset. Every morning we were there Dominic is walking the property, you can tell he loves what he does. We would talk to him any chance we would get. An amazing guy! He wasn't there on Saturday when we check out to thank him for an amazing stay. So Dominic if you're reading this, thank you so much for everything. I was very excited to make this reservation because my fiancé and I were going to stay here and recommend this location to all of our guests for our upcoming wedding. Unfortunately he was scheduled to work a mandatory overtime shift and we will not be able to stay anymore. The reason for my one star is this... they will not give you a refund because you are charged one night ($268 our rate) no matter how far in advanced you cancel. This is insanity! What kind of customer service does this place offer if they refuse to give you a refund with 23 days notice??! I do not recommend this hotel because they are the most unhelpful hotel I have ever booked at. The least they can do is offer a change in dates. I really enjoyed staying at Azul Del Mar. The pictures are exactly how you see it but even better in person. We stayed in the Deluxe Suite which had amazing views of the sunset. It was quiet, relaxing and secluded. There were plenty of hammocks, lounge chairs and a grill. The location was also pretty good with plenty of yummy seafood within a 5-10 minute drive. Very pleasant small intimate hotel. With just 6 rooms and private little beach, it feels more like a villa than a hotel. We enjoyed a vacation with our Parents and stayed a total of 11 nights there. We were very happy with the 'adults only' rule, no running kids and toys, relaxation! If you are travelling with small children, this might not be the place for you. All rooms have maximum occupancy of 2, with the exception of Royale suite, which offers additional bed at additional price. 11 nights is enough to see the good and the bad, so here are some of my tips: All rooms are clean and have a small updated kitchenette with all utensils, microwave, coffee maker and a dishwasher (oh yeah!). Coffee pads and creamer were provided each day, which was very useful. Due to a very sensitive fire alarm, there are no toasters in the rooms, which is a pity, but one can live with that. The room service was provided every day and included towel change, which was a bit strange, given the notes about being eco and saving water. Nothing horrible, just strange. Shampoo and soap was provided daily. For a short stay, you will be fine in any room. If you have the choice, I would definitely recommend the bigger rooms (Celeste, Royale and Aquamarine). Our Parents stayed in Royale, which was a very comfortable big suite on the ground level, with ocean view. It is also the only room with additional bed, which we needed for our brother joining only for few nights. The extra bed is actually a separate bedroom (no window in this extra room, though). We booked Orchidea for us, which was OK, but not as big as the other rooms. Due to some technical issues with dishwasher and AC, we were moved to Celeste upstairs for several nights. Given a very small difference in price, I would strongly recommend rooms upstairs, which are very spacious and offer amazing view and more privacy. We were happy with the nice tikkis and a small patio in front of the property, where we could enjoy the evenings, rain or shine! The electric grill in the back was also a huge plus! A small beach was enough for sunbathing and a short splash in the ocean. Parking was complimentary. The location of the hotel was great, good starting point for trips anywhere in the Keys, as well as to Miami! Some breakfast bars are withing a walking distance, and the beautiful coral reef of John Pennecamp state park is 5 minutes away by car! At additonal price, kayaks and some trips could be organized for us (due to weather, we did not use those services). Overall, it was a very nice stay. There were some things that could be improved (like WiFi range, bathrooms could be updated), but the place alone deserves a strong 4 stars! I am giving this property an additional 5th star for excellent customer service. As mentioned before, we had some issues in our room and both: the management and the staff were very helpful with solving the things. I really liked how instead of pretending nothing happened (like in many hotels), our complaints were taken care of immediately! A way to go! read more

My husband and I wanted a quiet getaway in a picturesque location to unwind for a few days and celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary. This stay exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Royale suite, which is the most expensive of the suites, but it was well worth it. The suite was spacious with a gorgeous view of the dock and bay. As great as the suite was, that's not what we will remember about this trip. It was the beauty of the grounds and the top notch service we received from the staff that made this trip special. When we checked in, we were greeted by Bud, who gave us an overview of the area, including things to do, services offered, and restaurant recommendations. During our stay, he answered our questions, helped us make reservations, and checked in with us to make sure everything was satisfactory. We also met the owners, Dominic and Anna, who were also very friendly and helpful. The nicest surprise was that even the groundskeeper, Mark, went above and beyond by providing us with some great recommendations as well. He even assisted me with fishing my glasses out of the water when I dropped them over the side of the dock. Everything about this trip was great, from the Kayaking trip arranged for us by Bud to the restaurant recommendations to just enjoying a sunset on the dock. Staying at Azul del Mar has been one of the best experiences I have ever had. Upon flying back to Omaha, I actually felt homesick from the little hotel. My boyfriend and I needed a hotel to stay in while we were in Key Largo for a wedding. The hotel that hosted the wedding was all booked, so we went searching online for another place to stay. Azul had great reviews and was very reasonable price-wise, so I booked it. We stayed in the La Palma suite. Our flight was late, so I called Azul to tell them that we probably wouldn't be there until about 2:30 in the morning. This was no problem and they made accommodations so that we could arrive and go to bed immediately. I think it was Kaylyn that I spoke to first. She was super nice and gave me great directions to get to the hotel. When we woke up in the morning, we immediately ran out the door to see the view. It did not disappoint! SO GORGEOUS! Dominic and Carol were also very helpful during our stay. My boyfriend and I decided to do the snorkeling and kayak trips. They were absolutely wonderful. Casey did our excursions. He was quiet but hilarious. There are a couple of hammocks hanging around the resort and plenty of chairs to lay out on. We swam in the water and it was a little murky but felt great! If you're looking for a place to stay while in Key Largo, I can't recommend Azul del Mar enough. It was clean, quiet and very reasonable. I booked the garden suite a couple months prior, when we got there around 1:30am our keys and a note were left for us saying they upgraded our room to the royale suite. It was beautiful. Just returned home from a very relaxing weekend at Azul Del Mar. The room was exceptionally clean and the added touches made you feel special. The grounds are beautiful and the dock on the water is very relaxing. We had the misfortune of having our car breakdown and everyone from the owner to a gentleman doing the grounds offered to lend us a hand. We go to the keys several times a year and found the size of the room to be larger than most and very quaint and inviting.
