I recently took a trip to Jamaica and was seriously craving a taste of curry goat. I got the collard greens and mac & cheese as sides. the coco bread was fluffy and deelish. Everything was simply AMAZING! Took me right back to the island from my cold, snow-surrounded home. I literally had to force myself to stop eating just so I could have a picture for this review. This is the second time I've eaten at OB's and each time I've had tears in my eyes because of how good the food is. The garlic sauce that comes with the baked salmon is ridiculously good; like I swear, I would rob a bank if they asked me to just so that I could have a bottle of that sauce. Ordered peas and rice with a side of cabbage. A really great place will make rice so delicious it can be its own meal, even without jerk or brown stew to go with it. This was just ok, with more of a sweet flavor than a spicy one for both cabbage and rice. However both were fresh so I'll bump up to three stars. read more

I've been here once. I will say this, if you go to a Jamaican restaurant and experience good customer service, turn around and walk away. If the hostess seems to be slightly annoyed with your presence, you've found a winner. As a Marylander, I grew up around a ton of Jamaican people & restaurants so I love Jamaican food. Unfortunately, living in South Jersey, there really aren't many great options at all. Enter, OB's in Chester... it's solid Jamaican food for this area. Would it be the best amongst kings of MD or northern NJ? Maybe, maybe not, but it DEFINITELY hits the spot when I need a good fix. "New customer & First Impression Review." Nice family establishment. Customer service also nice. Now as for the food I gave OB's a respectable "2 stars " this was based on the freshness of the food & my overall experience. I would've like to give 2 & a half stars but you can't give halfs & I definitely couldn't spare 3. I order a large oxtail platter for $17 it came with (2) sides and I chose cabbage & red beans & rice. I hadn't eaten all day so I quickly sampled the cabbage (my favorite side) before plating at home & immediately confused at how sweet it was; Hoping it was just a oddly sweet 1st bite I tried it again & the disappoint set in that the cabbage was ruined by the tremendous amount of sugar used. Hold tight as we're still kinda going down hill. The oxtails were pretty fatty & lacked that authentic Caribbean flavor. The oxtails kind of just tasted boiled with some seasonings with absolutely no herbs or spices. The red beans & rice was mediocre at best. I also ordered an additional side of cabbage because as I mentioned cabbage is my favorite side dish when ordering Caribbean food bad decision (extra $5 bucks down the drain). I order 2 beef patties & 1 chicken pattie. The patties were okay (see photos). Lastly I order a large coco bread which was probably the highlight of the entire order. I honestly can't see myself ever revisiting OB's because overall my family & I were dissatisfied. This review is based on my Chester location experience. I have actually tried their Delaware location in the past & was really impressed at the authentic taste & flavors in their food. The Chester & Delaware locations are like night & day in comparison. Hey, call me crazy but i enjoyed OB's. I was hesitant, based on some lackluster reviews but I think this is just the kind of place that you have to go with the flow. They aren't here to be stars on a food network show but rather to serve up some good stick to your ribs food. And since I didn't feel like driving all the way into Philly just for Jamaican, I'm glad I gave it a shot. I was greeted warmly by a man who I assume is the owner. His assistant was equally nice and some of the people dropping in for take-out just like I were warm and friendly also. Meal: Oxtail, rice and peas, cabbage. It was piping hot when i got home and I had enough for leftovers the next day. Always a plus for me the lover of leftovers :-) I wouldn't say this is the best Jamaican food I've ever had but for me it was a good solid meal that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'll be back. read more

The cabbage is so sweet I think it could be mastered if they loosen up on the sugar , the collard greens were just okay. The ox tail could have more flavor just to turn it up a notch just could be their recipe though everyone cooks different average ox tail , what I didn't like though is the many bones you see on the white bag there was only enough meat on all of those bones to equal up to eating one little ox tail , their ox tails have more fat then meat. If you are near Harrahs Chester or PPL Park, take a little drive down the roaad for some no nonsense Jamaican at OB's. You can get very satisfying authentic food here for a reasonable price. I get the jerk chicken platter 90% of the time, because it's the best I've found around here so far. They have oxtails, fish, jamaican patties, and other traditional stuff too. The staff is quick if not a little bristley. All platters come with red beans and rice and sweat cabbage. Delicious. read more

My favorite spot to eat. Always consistent. Always huge servings. Not to be a smartass, but certain people shouldn't get a say in what authentic jerk chicken should taste like. That's just a fact of life. I also dont agree with giving someone a bad rating because you're uncomfortable in minority neighborhoods. The coded language wasnt missed. I also dont think a restaurant should get a bad review because you wanted a takeout restaurant that sells individual meals to sell you an entire tray of chicken as if they cater. My husband and I were in Chester for the 3rd place CONCACAF game at the PPL stadium so we planned to go to a Jamaican restaurant that we like closer to downtown Philly. Unfortunately the traffic was terrible and the map on my phone indicated that the road that the restaurant is located on was closed. Using Yelp, we decided to find a restaurant near PPL Stadium since we didn't want to miss the game. The restaurant is a little hole-in-wall type place with really good food at low prices. I like that they give you the option of the different sizes that you want your portion. My husband had the jerk chicken and I had the chicken curry. We both ordered the small size and I thought that it was plenty for us. The lady at the counter asked if my husband wanted the jerk chicken spicy and he told her yes. The best Jamaican restaurant and I come from a city with a good amount of Jamaican restaurants, but this place is the best. Everything tastes like it's home cooked. I usually order the Jerk chicken, with cabbage and rice & beans. They are very generous with the portion size, especially the chicken and don't try to pass off uselss bone-bits as pieces. It's also well seasoned. The rice and cabbage is nice and firm, not limp or smushy due to being either reheated leftover or overcooked. I like that they have the option of a spicy, pepper sauce for the meal. It's a great compliment to the dish. It's also good to not see a messy platter, with the items nearly drowning in sauce like some places. The customer service is lacking. They don't smile at you or seem eager to shower you in hospitality, but there is respect. This place is definitely a no-frills eatery, but the food is great. read more

Walked in with some Sanchez (big up!!) playing on the speakers and proceeded to order. They have the standard Jamaican fare, but I always make a point to get Jerk Chicken when I try a spot for the first time. It's what gives me an idea of whether to go back. Ordered the jerk, with choice of spicy or mild. (Who the heck gets mild?!) From the onset I was taken aback because a medium was 13 dollars. A little high but okay. Got a Ox for the wife, both with rice and peas and cabbage. Get it home, crack it and the product looks NOTHING like jerk. No spice nor char,obviously stove cooked and looking as dry as the Sahara. The taste confirmed my thoughts, that OB doesn't know how to properly jerk that bird! Bland, non spicy and not a lot for the price, the cabbage, rice and peas proved to be the only saving grace. Too bad I'm not a vegetarian though. A large was 15 dollars! I would have been too through with that surprise. Cousin felt the same way, though he wasn't as nice about the sides. Tasted my wife's Ox which was ok but the price again was an issue. 15 for a medium!! I have 3 spots right in Philly that would put these folks out of business. I'd love to say I would go back to perhaps try the Goat or Curry chicken, but I'm good. Wish them the best as I know the options are slim out in Chester, but I'm one and done. read more

Best Jamaican experience in Delaware Valley - OB cooks the real deal every day, although all menu items are not always available - for example, they sometimes run out of salt fish by mid-week - you can't go wrong with the chicken, goat, oxtail, or any of the traditional Jamaican fare - both the mild and spicy jerk sauce will not let you down - if unsure, ask for a mixture of the two - if you want it really hot, ask OB to let you try his bottled sauce and really Fire It Up! I want to give a 3.5 but no halfsies and due to inconsistencies I can bring myself to give a 4. Therefore 3 stars it is. So the vibe here is typical dive Jamaican spot, no frills just good food. This spot is close enough to my job so get here without rushing and using a whole hour for that reason alone it's my go to spot. I'm sure I can call ahead but I never do. The employees aren't overly friendly but they're not rude either which you get sometimes so it's cool. Onto the food! So I always get the same thing, oxtails rice and peas and if they have it plantains, if not then cabbage. They don't always have plantains but I'm used to that so while it's a disappointment it's not devastating. The first few times I came here it knocked my socks off seriously I was considering getting a pan of oxtails for an event but didn't feel like driving out here on the weekend. The first time I brought a friend I was mad because that was the first time it wasn't great, it was undercooked, I swore to her it was a fluke and we went back a week or two after, same thing. I waited a month or two before returning and it was just ok the meat was good but the rice which I usually loved was hard. Their cabbage which I get when they don't have plantain is always overcooked. Today I went and everything was great the rice, the oxtails, the cabbage was soggy but not mush, I def enjoyed today's meal. Today I ordered two jerk chicken platters one with rice and beans and cabbage and one with plain rice and cabbage. The chicken was very dry! It was overcooked and some of the pieces were burnt. The rice and beans and cabbage were good. I also ordered Jamaican beef patties--they were good. I ordered a side of yams and they were burnt also.
