The thing I like most about yelp, when traveling, is that it lets you see the city like a local and not as a tourist. Now that's more a challenge overseas with the paucity of reviews for many international establishments, but still one can immediately and clearly see how differently yelpers look at the world versus others (say, TripAdvisor).
In this case: I went with my instincts. Yelping experience obviously helps: There were ZERO reviews in English. That was a good sign, in theory. Why was I putting myself through the extra effort to try one of the less popular of Oberlaa's 8 locations? I had a hunch: experience at a tourist packed location like the one in Neur Markt would be different from one frequented by locals.
I was right. It was almost as if I'd stumbled into a private club. A world of difference from the madhouse and long lines at Neur Markt. This location likely serves mainly the Viennese equivalent of "Ladies who socialize over cake and coffee." The staff doesn't see too many tourists, I expect. They had no idea how to deal with me, even though they were polite, and respectful. There was a clear language barrier. No one could speak even a single word of English. But, Oberlaa has one of the most detailed and helpful menu I've seen at a bakery. And, their website is extremely helpful in describing, with pictures, all the cakes, tarts, other baked goods available. (They also have their versions of macarons called LaaKronen)
I was still full from a late breakfast. And, so I only meant to nibble at the three slices I bought at Oberlaa. But, in my books, the mark of a truly great dessert is that it forces you to test the depths of your limits of satiation - how long do you go on eating after you're full, because you love it (not out of compulsion to clean the plate). Oberlaa is truly fantastic: starting from the gluten and lactose free Schokolade-Mandel Schnitte (Chocolate almond slice) to the delicious Apfel Mohn Torte (buttered apples and juicy poppy seeds on an almond cake base) and the absolutely super-duper fantastic magnificent gorgeous finger licking good Schwarze Ribisel Torte (soft sponge cake, blackcurrant yogurt cream, fresh currants, with a shot of crème de cassis liquer). It's a seasonal cake and, if available, a must-have.
So, I thought this roomy location had a different and larger selection of cakes than at others, and the quiet and peaceful environment was just the perfect way to have a relaxing afternoon. There were actually people reading newspapers in the beautiful garden in the courtyard... I expect they will curse me if more people end up making their way to this location and ruining their peace and quiet! ;) read more
