With an insurance change we were required to find a new optometrist after 6 years being with our former Dr. We are so pleased with the family oriented and customer care provided from the reception, to eye photography assistant, the Dr and follow up contact education. Our Dr was very complete and offered an experience we haven't experienced since relocating 6 years ago to Ohio. As a result, the entire family will be coming here. I really appreciate the 1:1 contact education for my teenager who will be a new user to contacts. The instruction was delivered with encouragement, patience and understanding. Thank you! I left the office a message and they called me back the next day. The doctor was very good. However, even though they accepted my eyecare insurance, it became clear that they increase their profits by billing your medical insurance for numerous and random medical-related services. Once they discovered that their practice does not accept my medical insurance, their staff LITERALLY TOLD ME TO NEVER RETURN TO THEM. I felt humiliated! Amazing staff and it's always a pleasure to see Dr. Dirr! I'm always impressed with how helpful everyone is and how easy scheduling is. I really appreciate that they have late hours as well as Saturday hours. My contacts always come in surprisingly fast! They have a beautiful selection of glasses (although not the cheapest glasses). They work hard to make sure that you get the best value for your vision insurance and they understand when sometimes you need to go for more economical options. Last year I needed to have eye surgery and they sent me to another store to pick out glasses because it was just a temporary need and cost was the biggest consideration. read more

I went to this business for the first and last time. They are in my insurance network. BUYER BEWARE! I called the next business day to cancel the order. They lied and said that all sales are final after the fact. I was not told that up front. The doctor manufactured paperwork after my visit. As I was not given anything upon my departure except for a Super Bill. I do not have the product and yet I am still fighting to get my money back. Why would a doctor keep the money for a product he still has, has been canceled, and is aware that the loss of this money is a hardship for my son who has special needs and myself? He has been fighting me to keep this money for months. Why? The staff seemed to only care about getting you in the door and the person working with the glasses was so unfriendly and unhelpful. She just stood there. I would definitely not recommend this store. read more

Terrible. At first all seemed well, I went in for a routine eye exam and everyone was generally nice and helpful. Everything was going well until I asked about my contact prescription. Apparently they charge a $130 "contact fitting" fee. Which seems like a good way to get guaranteed money when you know your customers are going to go online and order contacts elsewhere. The doctor claimed that this is something every doctor will charge. This is the first I've ever heard of it. Anyway, I explained that i know what brand I wear so I just need to be told what power I need in each eye so I could order more contacts. They told me they couldn't give me that information until I paid the fee. So now they are holding my prescription hostage until I pay them $130. I tried to resolve the issue on the phone and they were very unpleasant. I will absolutely not be returning. In short, do not go to Oakley Square Eye Associates. read more

Great staff and doctors and a wonderful selection of glasses! They carry a wide range of frames from different brands around the world, so you're getting a better selection than a "LensCrafters"-type location and selection. They also have state of the art equipment that I haven't seen at other optometrists so I'm confident I'm getting the best! Dr. Apfel is incredible . I recently had an issue with my vision . I received an incorrect diagnosis from the emergency room. I called Oakley Square and the staff scheduled an appointment for me right away ; Dr, Apfel gave me the correct diagnosis and now I am on my way to recovery . I called Oakley Square Eye Associates to see if they were accepting new patients. They said yes and I informed the employee I was speaking with that I did not have vision insurance. She said that was not a problem. I went to my appointment and again at the front desk informed them that I did not have vision insurance. They wanted my health insurance and said that health insurance normally covers eye exams once a year. Knowing my health insurance, I again told the front desk employees that no, that was not the case with my insurance. I had my exam and came out to pay for my services. I paid the amount in full, assuming that since I had reiterated multiple times that I did not have vision insurance, that the balance I was paying was the total balance. To my surprise, I received a bill for $190 in the mail. I called the office/billing manager to explain the charges. She was extremely rude and sharp with me. She said insurance didn't cover the exam and fitting. I told her yes I knew this and I had told the office staff multiple times prior to my services that I had no vision benefits. She said it was my problem to deal with and my responsibility to know my insurance. Interestingly enough, I DID know my insurance and informed them of my lack there of multiple times. She was extremely rude, insinuated I was lying, raised her voice and laughed when I asked if she thought she was handling the situation properly as I was being respectful of her and she couldn't seem to grant me the same courtesy. I find this extremely deceitful to a patient to charge them as if they have insurance, when they have explicitly told you that they do not have vision insurance and have no coverage concerning vision benefits. Also, should an employee in charge of billing really be speaking to customers who have questions about their bills in such a manner? I urge anyone who has had similar issues with this business, as I see many similar reviews on here, to file a complaint with the BBB. read more

Doctors are good and thorough and the sole reason to keep coming here. Front staff has turned over in past 1-2 years and it really, really shows. A year or so ago I ordered contacts through the office, rather than online. I picked them up, checked them against my Rx, and I found that one box was the wrong Rx. It's very disappointing that the front desk staff did not double-check the numbers on the box first. Sloppy. ... I was also telephoned before a previously scheduled appointment last year and told that a 6-month contact lens follow-up was not covered by insurance -- that only yearly appointments were covered -- so I was not due to see the doctor and was told to cancel the appointment. I thought that was odd, after years of having the same insurance and coming in for 6-month follow-up appointments as requested by the doctor. One of the senior staff later confirmed that I was given incorrect information by new staff. Sigh. ... At my most recent annual, the technician was about to dilate my eyes before I alerted them that I was still wearing my contacts. This despite them asking me just minutes prior if I had my contacts in. Turns out the tech also shouldn't have performed a baseline vision reading while I still had my lenses in, and we had to redo that test. ... Lastly, my credit card was double-billed in the past year or so, possibly at the time of the contact lens Rx mix-up. I caught that, called the office, and was refunded. ... I come here because I'm a longtime patient, I like my doctor, and it's near my home. But my patience with the rest of the office is wearing thin. My advice: Go here only if you are the type of patient who is prepared to be in charge of your own health and to question and double-check absolutely *everything* -- from billing to testing to receiving the correct Rx. ... You should do this anyway at any health care provider, but you need to be doubly careful at this office. read more

In general, I do not like the eye doctor. It is one of my least favorite things to do. Dr. Dirr and the staff at Oakley Square Eye Associate have changed all that. Until 2 years ago, I had 20/15 vision. My age is catching up with my eyes. Through all the changes in my eyes, Dr. Dirr and his staff have patiently helped me navigate the world of glasses and now contacts. All 10 eyes in my family of 5 are well cared for. Their selection and styling of frames is fantastic. AND if you accidentally run over your glasses with your car or scratch your eye with jalapeños on your finger, they will not bat an eye as they help you. I was looking for a new optometrist now having vision benefits at my place of employment. I asked friends, checked Yelp and my insurance. I saw the positive reviews, so I made an appointment. I was the first appointment of the day and was greeted in a professional manor, the technician took me to a room where several machines checked my vision in a variety of ways - close one eye what row can you read, etc. After the technician was completed we went to the exam room, Dr Apfel came in right away, checked my vision. I've been the lucky member of my family to not have glasses. Well after years working in excel my vision is still good, but now affected due to a stigmatism. He prescribed glasses to wear while working on the computer. The visit took about an hour and he took time to answer questions and I didn't feel rushed. I selected a pair of frames from their showroom, Prada and picked them up a few days later. I've received several compliments on the glasses and recommend the office to anyone looking for a friendly, thorough optometrist in Cincinnati. read more

Disappointed in this office. I had to switch doctors due to a change in insurance. However, I realized I didn't have enough contacts to last until the next appointment with the new doctor that would be covered by insurance. Since the prescription expired, I couldn't order a couple of months online. They wouldn't even offer to do a quick check, so I could order a few months until the appointment. How unprofessional and uncaring. And when you have an issue with your eyes, the care is not comprehensive. It took 4 months to figure out that I am allergic to a certain type of contact. Very unhappy and irritated. Now I have to pay out of pocket for a lens fitting at the new doctor since it won't be covered by insurance as it's a few months to early. I certainly would have appreciated a more understanding doctor/office after I spent lots of money of checkups etc. I understand the need to adhere to laws about prescriptions/fittings. The issue is that there was no offer to do a lens check/fitting at a discounted pay out of pocket rate so I could just order 2 months. My new doctor did even though it was 2 months before insurance would be eligible. It was an easy solution & they understood the issue. Just an example of how some doctors are patient friendly & respectful and others don't seem to want to work out a solution. read more

I went to Oakley eye associates last week and what a mess. They have a new policy that you have to sign that you can't get any refund on glasses- fine I get that. That wasn't the worst of it though. Every year Dr. Aphal tells me I have early macular degeneration ( I'm 36) and I remind him that he said this last year but nothing with my vision changed ( I realize it could happen years later). This year I had had enough so I asked him if he could compare what my eye looked like last year to this year and he couldn't because he didn't do the further testing so obviously I asked for the further/extra testing this year and everything on that test looked fine to him. Thank you for telling me I'm going blind. Also, between my testing and seeing him somehow my name changed in the computer twice and he had no idea who I was ( he asked me some other patient's name which for their benefit I won't mention here). He found me a bit later and was able to finish my exam. Then he sent me out to get glasses with his office manager. All was fine ( although she's not the friendliest) until she gave me the prices for my lenses- she added a $100 charge for lenses that are 20% lighter- I asked her why I needed this and she said well you got them on your prescription sunglasses last year ( I do not recall her stating this was a $100 up-charge last year or that I was getting them at all) and this is beyond the extra charges for polarized/ no glare lenses ( about $150 up-charge) - I asked her again why I needed this and she said because they are lighter ( obviously) but only 20%?! I don't think that's worth it for $100 extra dollars. She acted like I was an idiot for not getting these and she was shocked I didn't want them. These $180 glasses turned into $350 glasses. I asked a week later if I could purchase them after the 1st of the year and she said no bc I signed the policy- I get it but I just wanted to purchase them at a later date not return them all together. She said they just don't do that at their office. Super helpful. Lastly, seeing people's name on a list when you check in is a HIPAA violation- they black out the names after the fact but there was someone on the list ahead of me that was not blacked out. They also yelled my name across the office ( first and last) when I called to ask about the glasses- the admin forgot to put me on hold and then they hung up on me. Not to mention again how they confused me with another patient in between tests. read more

First of all I want to start by saying they have an awesome doctors who are very knowledgeable. I am usually not one to even leave a review online, however I felt like this whole experience calls for one. I had my appointment with the doctor gave my insurance info, and left. 2 months later I have a bill on my mail saying I have a balance due. I then call and get transferred to "billing" and had the unfortunate experience of speaking to this women who clearly isn't happy with her job. She was very passive aggressive and rude. But that wasn't even the issue she completely was not willing to give any answer and just kept telling me to call my insurance. Because I am not a problematic person I decided to call my insurance ( had a complete opposite experience here ) where the agent there agreed to call the clinic on my behalf. The next day I get a voice mail from my insurance at how difficult the same person was ( wasn't shocked )and that she told them they don't take "my plan", next the same unhappy, rude women leaves a voice mail stating that if I don't pay by the end of the week I will get my staff sent to collection. Long story short, what the lady doesn't know is that I will pay the payment fully out of pocket ( I am not one to take anyones money, and have the capacity to pay 10 times the amount if I want to)but never will I go back to that place. She ruined my whole experience there ( I guarantee you will lose more customers because of her), goes to show you a little kindness could have gone along way. I will take my money somewhere else where I will be treated like a human. read more

I sought out reviews for Dr. Apfel online and they were pretty good, so I decided to make an appointment. My experience with Oakley Square Eye Associates went from OK to disappointing to nightmarish! I arrived early, but had to wait about 20 minutes after my appointment start time to see the "tech" that did my screening. She confessed to me that she usually works the desk but they were understaffed that day so she would do my screening (although she assured me she did have "some" training under her belt). As she proceeded to complete my screening, a piece of the equipment touched my actual eye. I didn't think too much of it at the time. I went to see Dr. Apfel, and he was a decent Optometrist. No complaints there initially. I was there for contacts until they told me there was a $140 contact fitting fee! That's nearly double the amount of other places! Insurance or no insurance, that was ridiculous. I left with nothing but an eye exam. Later that night I woke up out of my sleep with agonizing pain in my eye! It felt like someone lit a match to my cornea! I was reeling in pain and called an Ophthalmologist nearby and made the first appointment available. I thought I had scratched my cornea with my contact lens, but no, the Ophthalmologist told me I had an eye infection! You guessed it, it was the same eye that the "tech" graced with the eye equipment from earlier! I called Dr. Apfel's office to tell them about what happened and they denied vehemently that it was them. They said it could happen to anyone for any reason and there is no way to prove it was them. Dr. Apfel even chastised me for not coming back to them to check it out! I would have thought they would have heard my story and tried to make the situation better but, I was met with hostility and accusations. Very long story short, I would never go back to Oakley Square Eye Associates unless I had to do so. They are unfriendly, unhelpful, and incompetent. read more

I have been seeing Oakley Square Eye Associates for two years now and continue to be impresses with their level of service and professionalism. The eye exams are the most extensive I have ever had and the doctors are careful to explain what they are doing and why. The office staff is always friendly and helpful and also responsive to questions. I recently bent my glasses and took them in for repair expecting to have to come back in a few hours. Instead she dropped what she was doing and spent 30 mins realigning my glasses and even replaced the nose pads. I would definitely recommend Oakley Square Eye Associates to anyone. read more

In 2016 I took a prescription for eye glasses to this business. Susie was the technician who helped me select and then adjust my eye glasses. My husband and I are both retired and on a fixed income. I decided to purchase a very expensive pair of frames because they are light weight and excellent quality. The price was way above our budget but I chose this "Clearly Essential" 2.5 Swiss made pair because when I asked Susie if my prescription changed, would I be able to switch out the lens and use the rest of the frame. She said "yes." However, the week of July 2 I went to this shop because the ear part of the frame had come loose from the lens and I asked to have a new piece affixed to the lens. My phone number was taken and later that afternoon, a woman from the office called to let me know that they had called the lab and was told that the glasses could not be fixed by adding a new piece that connect from the ear to the frame. Had I been given the correct information in 2016, I would have chosen another pair of glasses. Now I have an extremely expensive pair of glasses that is my correct prescription but that I cannot wear because the snap that affixes the ear piece to the lens no longer affixes tight enough. Very disappointed that I was given incorrect information. Was this done to "make the sale" at all costs???? read more

The staff is friendly and the doctors are thorough. I have been elsewhere for eye exams because my insurance is not accepted at OSEA, but I always return to them, even at full price, due to the quality of service I receive. I recently had an appointment with Dr. Dirr and will NEVER go back again. I've had glasses and very bad eyesight since I was five so I've been consistent with eye appointments 1-2 times a year for the majority of my life. That being said, I'm no stranger to the layout of these appointments. Dr. Dirr was completely unprofessional during my appointment. Every other sentence out of his mouth was a joke at the expense of my poor eyesight. I can take a few jokes. Haha. I'm blind as a bat. Haha. Of course I can't see the letters on the chart. But I can only politely laugh for so long before growing weary of his tasteless humor. Putting his poor manners aside, I still wouldn't make another appointment with Dr. Dirr. As most everything in Oakley Square Eye Associates is overpriced, I simply wanted my prescription so I could order my glasses and contacts elsewhere. Then Dirr informs me that I have to pay a 'contact fitting fee'. Fine, whatever. Let's just get it over with. Here's my problem with this though. Dr. Dirr informed me that the contact brand I had been using was no longer made (false) and repeatedly tried to sell me on ridiculously expensive brands that I could only afford if I didn't mind not eating. (I'm working with $130 of measly eye coverage from my insurance.) The only reason to get a contact fitting is if you switch to a new brand or type of contacts. So I ended up paying a $55 copay to switch to a new brand of contacts even though I was happy with my current brand. Okay, fine. I get the new contacts, test them out, they're okay. I go back for my 'contact fitting' which involves me tolerating the dear doctor's jokes for another five minutes while I assure him that I can see with the contacts. He then leaves me standing at reception for ten minutes even though I can see the prescription sitting on the desk in front of me. The receptionist literally just handed it to me and I walked out the door. He must have been hoping that I would throw some money toward his ridiculous business and order their overpriced contacts. Not likely. So I finally leave, prescription in hand, only to realize that the contact brand on my prescription is an entirely different brand than the one currently occupying my eyes. WTH, Dirr?! Are you too busy making insensitive jokes to check your own work? I will NEVER EVER EVER visit Dirr at Oakley Square Eye Associates. I can't comment on Dr. Apfel as I've never had an appointment with him. He may be great, but I'm not taking that risk. read more

I am in shock. After taking the time to find three pairs of glasses for myself, my husband, and my daughter -- total value near $1,000.00 -- my husband arrived at 9:05 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. eye exam on Christmas Eve and was told he missed his appointment. They told him that the doctor's time was valuable and they took someone else is his pace. Mind you, they didn't even call at 9:02 a.m. to make sure he was coming before taking someone who walked into the office without an appointment. No kindness was shown and no consideration was given for our time, as well. (Of course, he was there at 9, but was trying to find their parking lot across the street.) I understand that time is valuable, but even our Pediatrician, Dermatologist, and Allergist all have 10-15 minute windows. 5 Minutes! Needless to say, they not only lost an exam, but they have also lost the business of a family of 6 and two pairs of glasses that were being purchased today ($800). Additionally, the selection of eye ware isn't that great and the prices are high in comparison to similar eyeglass stores. Clearly this place operates under the guidance of Scrooge. I really enjoyed this visit! I have had the same eye doctor for years and when I moved to Cincinnati I was hesitant to pick my doctor. I finally broke down and called someone and I couldn't have been happier. Scheduling a first appointment was easy. The doctor was so helpful and she walked me through each step of the appointment.
