My eye exam was the MOST thorough and Dr. Hamilton explained every step with precision and humor. Importantly, I learned why eye glasses ordered from lesser committed "eye professional" offices do not work as prescribed - they are made with inferior plastics - something you will not see endorsed from Dr. Hamilton. 5 stars for Dr. Guappone. 4 stars for the pushy need-to-buy-your-glasses here pitch. -- I found Hyde Park Optometrists thanks to Yelp (see Yelpers, your contributions REALLY make a difference in peoples lives!) My husband and I actually booked back to back appointments. I haven't been to the eye doctor since I was in 5th grade, mainly because I claim to have perfect vision, but after not being able to see (especially while driving) my family banded against me and made me go (insert mad face). And I'll admit, i was mainly not going because I thought it was because I was getting older and/or possibly because I am scared to death of that eye puff machine. Basically I'm Rachel off friends in the episode "The One With Joey's Big Break" and also where Rachel goes to the eye doctor, gets some drops and everyone has to hold her down to put them in, yeah that's actually based on my life story. ANYWAY -- the doc tells me the eye puff machine is old skool and that technology is no longer in use. Now they use these super high tech camera things and it's not *as* scary. After the camera screenings etc. the eye exam was where I seriously almost lost my shit. Dr. Guappone 1) looks like Bill Nye. 2) IS THE SMARTEST MOST ARTICULATE MAN ON EARTH (well at least in the eye doc world). He didn't give me some BS medical terms. He actually broke down what was wrong in terms I could understand and even demonstrated on a model, and as a visual learner I was super appreciative of this! Also as others have said, he is very thorough. When I started off my saying I was a perfectionist, he went on to say he was too - and hence the through exam to make sure that the exam matched up to the camera readings. I just could not believe the amount of time he took to explain both to me and my husband about our situations, preventative health, and plan moving forward. It was a breath of fresh air and seriously eliminated (well almost) my fear of going to the doctor. I cannot reccomend him enough! The only negative and -1 star. I felt like the glasses selection was a bit outdated. They had some trendy designers, but not nearly enough or in the styles I wanted. Although the young man helping me was funny and enthusiastic I was put off by how insistent he was when trying to get me to purchase glasses through them. I literally just learned I needed glasses, if I have to wear them on my face every day - I want and need to find the ones I actually like! And again, as a perfectionist do some reserach first. Albeit super friendly, would lay off the sales pitch. Overall cannot reccomend this place enough and I will certainly be back for my ongoing check-ups! read more

Dr. Guappone is my new hero. I have never in my life had a health professional spend so much time with me. Instead of making me feel like an imposition, Dr. G made me feel like a special guest in his office.sat there half expecting to be offered a cup of tea and some scones. My eye exam was thorough, and I was given a ton of information on how to improve my eyesight through exercises and better computing habits. I would go back just for fun if my insurance covered it. Update: I ended up buying 3 pair of glasses with the help of Brandi. She is truly the Queen of finding glasses that suit a person's face and personality. My friend came with me when I went to pick up my glasses and he was so impressed with the service that he decided to book himself for an eye exam and get himself some new glasses too. UPDATE: I received a phone call from HPO a few hours after I posted this. I informed the woman who called me that I "didn't have a very good customer experience" when I'd called a second time to schedule an appointment, and so I was going to get an appointment elsewhere. "Okay," she said before hanging up. No curiosity about what the issue was or how she might be able to make things right. This speaks volumes to me. The comment left below by HPO doesn't mean much in light of two negative experiences with two separate, equally apathetic members of staff. I was encouraged by the reviews I read here, but my interaction with the office didn't reflect what I've read on Yelp. First, I called during the work day and left a clear voicemail when the call was not answered, asking for someone to call me back to schedule an appointment. 24 hours later, the call still hadn't been returned, so I rang them again. I asked if they were accepting new patients, as my call hadn't been returned. "We're very short staffed and haven't had time to check our messages," I was told in a most unapologetic tone. I should have thanked her and hung up at this point. I thought I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, so asked to schedule an appointment. The receptionist rushed to hang up before telling me the cost of a contact lens fitting, but I managed to stop her and ask how much I should be prepared to spend. She told me she had no idea, that "it depends," but that it would be at least $88 and she couldn't give me any more information than that. It wasn't so much what she said, but how she said it. I told her that, in light of the lack of clarity, it would be best not to book my appointment. I thanked her and moved on. Front office staff can make or break a medical practice. Maybe this woman had a bad day - I certainly hope this was the case. But I don't think I can entrust my only pair of eyes to an office where customers are treated like hassles. read more

It's been 2 years since I've been back, and 4 years since my last review of HPO and the care I received today was just as stellar as it was the first time. Dr. Guappone is the epitome of old-school style doctoring (where the doctor spends time with you, as much time as needed, listens and genuinely cares about you ) with best in class testing capabilities. There is simply no other doctor I trust to care for my vision health. This was my first visit to the eye doctor that I can remember. So why did I go? Well I thought I was going blind.... Apparently I was having an ocular migraine. The staff was extremely helpful in determining if something more serious was going on while I was talking to them on the phone. When I arrived at the office, Dr. Guappone was extremely informative explaining the inner workings of my eyes and what exactly an ocular migraine is. I would definitely recommend him to someone who is looking for an Optometrist. read more

In 20 years of seeing ophthalmologists I've never seen someone this methodical, attentive and thorough. He explained to me what the issue was and how it was caused by eye functionality in a way that made sense and was easy to understand. He didn't rush me or try to get rid of me quickly - he took his time and he was definitely worth my time!! read more

Dr. G is absolutely wonderful. I have had many issues with my eyes over the years and he has helped me so much. He spent almost an hour with me after my most recent episode and made sure he went over every detail until I felt comfortable. I am so thankful that he is such a wonderful and caring doctor and took to time to make sure I felt okay before I left his office. This is my favorite optometrist in the city! Dr Guappone does contact fittings that have changed the way I buy and care for my contacts. I had no idea my eyes could feel this good. His office is in hyde park in a converted house and that gives his office a homey feel. Don't be fooled, he has some fancy equipment that maps your eyeball shape (for contact wearers) and the eye exam is fast and painless. read more

Dr Guappone is one of the most knowledgeable eye doctors I've ever used. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is i always have to wait 20-30 minutes to get in. The timeliness here is a bit off, but just plan accordingly and you'll get one of the best eye doctors around! I am 76 years old and have been seeing Dr Guappone since he shared an office in Eastgate. In those many years I have received excellent care for contact lenses and glasses...professional, efficient. I had a wonderful visit with Dr. Guappone. He always takes so much time to explain to me what is going on with my vision, even though my situation is relatively straightforward. OK, so after getting my eyes checked, I got 10 pairs of lenses, and tried them out. One was not too comfortable because of astig. I went back, got checked, and the Dr. told me why the astig lens can cause some discomfort, but that it appears to be healthy. He said I could try a different astig lens, or a non-astig lens. So I got 10 pairs of lenses where the right eye is non-astig, and I'll let him know which I prefer, or if I'd prefer to try another. Bottom line is, this guy really does his job, as a Dr., to make sure you get something that is healthy for your eye, and something that you are comfortable with. This Doctor is really impressive, but I suspect his greatest skill isn't business ownership, so there may be issues with the staff, that shouldn't reflect on him (I'm looking at Shannon C.'s comment). The support staff are mostly like high school grads I suspect, with little customer service skills. If he hired a business guy I bet consumers would be knocking down his doors. He has the best equipment, and strong skills, to give you the eye care that will make a big difference in your life. read more

I've been here twice in the past couple of years and Dr. Guappone is very friendly and informative, explaining every step of the way what he's doing and why, and making suggestions on how to alleviate any eye issues/symptoms. The only negative is that the selection of frames, while decent, isn't really for the glasses fashionista such as myself :-p Which isn't a reflection on the practice nor competence, so I wouldn't deduct any stars for that. As Brandi explained, some brands (like my favorite Chanel) simply won't offer their styles to certain practices/stores unfortunately. I didn't get a pair last year because I just couldn't find a pair I loved but this year I found the perfect pair elsewhere and brought them back to have the lenses made. Brandi sat down with me while she took the measurements etc. and explained to me as well what she was doing and why, and also that I might have some slight waviness at a certain point of the glasses due to my astigmatism.
