If you grew up in Oakland you have to rock an Oaklandish gear at least once. The clothing apparel to represent Oakland from it's teams to the neighborhoods. They also do a lot of great things for Oakland residence and support local shops as Oaklandish started out as a local online shop. They have parties for first fridays, annual scavenger hunts and many fun activities. They also donate to local communities as well. I came in this time around because i ordered some clothing online and they sent me 2 boxes of the same item and charged me once. So i came into the store to give back the extra stuff they sent me by mistake. Everyone thinks I'm crazy for giving back the stuff even he employees looked at me funny and didn't quite understand why i brought the merchandise in (they thought i was returning it). The staff are always friendly every time i come in and very helpful and attentive. Every time you buy something you receive a tote bag and Oaklandish stickers. The quality of their clothing are great but, their shirts tend to shrink a little (most likely user error from me) and they even sell Levi jeans now. So I came to Oaklandish last week because I wanted to get a cute shirt to wear at the A's game I was going to the next day. The other usual A's stuff I had just wasn't doing it for me that day. The store is really easy to find on Broadway. It's a pretty nice store - not crazy big, but well organized. They have a ton of cute shirts and sweaters to pick from. I ended up getting the 1st dynasty shirt. You basically pick the shirt you want and then tell them the size that you want, and then they get it for you from a wall behind the cash registers. At the register, my husband started to look at the cool pins they had and he got one for his hat. I do want to go back and get the East Bay shirt, super cute. Cool store. read more

You don't have to be a Oakland resident to rock anything Oaklandish - I don't even live in Oakland(yet) and I own 2 of their shirts. I like the fact almost everything is printed on American-made American Apparel shirts, locally designed and unique. Their Downtown Oakland store is friendly and accents the Downtown area, and I will also say they know how to throw a party - I was at their Children's Fairyland party a few nights ago and it was pretty damn cool! read more

If you are a native of the O-a-k (like me), this place will make you feel downright patriotic for Oakland. As you walk in, the wall to the left is a collage of the Oakland roots and tree and then some. You can find unique shirts adorned with local designs, A's, Warrior's, Raider's and even BART (local public transit service) logos and sayings. The gear here is one of a kind, attention getting stuff. The shirt colors are solid and logos are tastefully adorned for adults as well as children. Cons: * Staff is a bit snobbish. * $27 for a T-shirt is way too expensive, especially considering their poor quality. * Flimsy T-shirts won't last more then a couple of years. * Most T-shirts won't fit people who are moderately overweight. Women size 16 & over will have trouble finding clothing that fits. * Unethical return policy. If you return a product you can only get store credit, and the store credit is only good for 30 days which is possibly an illegal practice in California. If I gave you money and you give me store credit, how can that money "expire"? Shouldn't this be treated like a gift card, which is never worth less then the amount of money you spent on it minus a maintenance fee? Pros: * Nice designs. The Oakland "Tree" design is iconic. * Great community spirit. * A welcome addition to downtown Oakland. ------- Detailed review: Nice shirts. Great community spirit. Great idea, poor execution. Two of my friends received Oaklandish tee-shits for Christmas. Both shirts were much too small for their recipients. Many of the Oaklandish T-shirts are made by American Apparel, who is known for making clothes which are smaller then other vendors. Because people don't have enough body image problems already. Oaklandish: Please drop the American Apparel shirts and choose a vendor with realistic sizes. I'm a man, and I usually wear a men's medium. The Oaklandish medium T-Shirt barely fits me and feels quite thin and flimsy. I can tell it won't last as long as my other shirts. For a $27 T-shirt, I expect better. Shirts can be returned for store credit or exchanges only. No refunds according to the salesperson. If you are a woman and wear Extra Large, note that the shirts here probably won't fit you because they are what other vendors consider size 'Large'. They really don't sell Extra Large shirts, and that is the largest size they carry. So much for diversity. read more

These people know Oakland. They do more for spreading the good vibes about Oaktown than the Raiders, A's, and Warriors have ever accomplished. The reason for this is they have become a part of the community's fabric. They're at street fairs, farmers' markets, street corners, art galleries, and they are Oakland. These Friends of Oakland are artistic and have their finger squarely on the pulse of Oakland. From their mobile store selling t-shirts, hoodies, and buttons, to their email updates, to their community involvement, and to their light-hearted, fun, and now forbidden Capture the Flag games at Frank Ogawa, they have done more than their fair share to bring the community together. For all of their good will and for the positive light they shed on Oakland, Dellums should give the folks of Oaklandish the key to the City. They deserve it. I bought the black hoody and a t-shirt and they gave me one for free cuz I spent above a certain amount. I'm 6ft and skinny and the hoody size L fit me perfectly. I wear this thing everyday and it doesn't shrink after you wash it multiple times, doesn't fade either. T-shirts suck HARD, bad quality and way overpriced. read more

Damn this place is cool! Set in a loft just off Jack London Square, Oaklandish is a gallery and urban outfitter store par excellence! Celebrating everything Oakland, Oaklandish seeks to educate you about the history of Oakland and some of it's more colorful characters. Bruce Lee, Sonny Barger, Oakland shipyard workers, the Black Panther Party, and Julia Morgan are all celebrated and reviewed within Oaklandish's walls. Good place to hang for awhile. And, this will appeal to Andy S. and anyone else who likes trains, they have an HO scale BART train (released one time in the 70s, very rare) in the store. You gotta find these guys just for that! read more

I have been buying shirts from oaklandish for a few years now. I own about 6 of them. Whenever I check out their website, im like a kid in a candy store eager to see what new designs they have come up with. When I found out they were finally opening a store downtown, I had to check it out. Man, was I impressed. It is definitely a place to keep tabs on not only for what shirts they come up with, but also for the events they have (fairyland & free beer, nuff said). But in the end, whats the most impressive about oaklandish is that with everything they do, its all about giving back to the community. So for that, I dont mind dropping $28 to wear my love for the town on my sleeve. read more

Something happened and they became a corporate brand that now replicates their branding, psuedo-humanitarian strategy in all major US cities. Don't get me wrong, they have cool designs but give their designers a small check ($125, plus six shirts), but then retain the rights, and keep the profits high. They DO give back over $10G/year, but with net profits rumored in the hundreds of thousands/year, they really aren't so Oakland - ish anymore.... Talk about the 1%.... No wonder they've been so quiet during Occupy Oakland... Ask questions, follow the money.... read more

Headquarters for Oaklandish is in a great loft space near Jack London Square. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but upstairs offers up to an airy loft with displays of different art, flyers and pamphlets galore and usually some music playing. This place has been on my list for months and I finally made it today. I'm an easily excitable type of woman and clothes are DEF my thing, so imagine me bouncing down Broadway to get to the store, I was damn near salivating. Walked into the store and it had this really chill vibe, like everyone belongs and they couldn't care less that I'm not from Oakland but trying to be down by buying Oakland paraphernalia. They had old school jams playing on a clear system, Which was inviting, I felt at home. The sales employees were really kind, helpful and attentive but not overly attentive. Again, I was comfortable there. The products, clothing and accessories were good quality. I bought a really cool sweatshirt at a reasonable price ($40 bucks) less than places like American Apparel and even Gap nowadays. The material of the sweatshirt and the tees there was super soft. Upon check out I got a free Oaklandish tote - Not sure if there is a minimum purchase amount to get it- I read in another review that there is a min purchase requirement...anyway the tote is cool too and I got Oaklandish stickers and for signing up for emails, I get 10% off my next purchase. Will definitely go back again, in the meantime, you can catch me fronting like a native... with my Oakland gear...daring you to call me out on it! Lol! Visit, you'll love it! read more

I'm not reviewing the venue but the Oaklandish organization itself. Oakland's had the "the is no there there" rep for too long but Oaklandish does far more than offer East Bay hipsters a groovy spot. They celebrate the funk, vibrancy, fight, and spirit that is woven throughout the Big O's history and present.
