As you wander the streets in a wunderlust of lights & spirits that run rampant upon Rutgers University, you might stumble into the Olde Queens, one of the finest dive bars I've ever come across. Stepping inside on a Wednesday evening, we were greeted by a lonely bartender serving a few good men at the bar, anxiously awaiting their next order. The bar is stocked with the standard brands and their tap pumps eight beers, a few craft brews but mostly standard names to tide you over. As a bartender makes his way towards my friend and I, bowl of popcorn in hand, he sets the salty snack down in front of us, and makes swift work of our sudsy beverages. As we acclimated ourselves amongst the quiet mumbles from the other patrons, the soft rumble of rock music playing in the background, all were jolted quickly from their seats as a pack of sorority girls made their way through the single wooden doorway. The bar quickly found itself engulfed in orders of sugary shots, each closing out their separate tabs in some convoluted way that made my head spin. The bartender and staff though had themselves on point, as though this is a common occurrence, expected to happen within their bar. The jukebox rang soon after of 2010 radio hits and songs of independence and freedom that even Francis Scott Key would be surely proud of. The bar area held about 12 to 15 stools, while some small tables lined the wall, each offering space for four to six people. As you make your way to the back, the tables became larger, catering the more guests if you wanted to bring the entire crew. The staff was very friendly and easy going, certainly hosting to the needs of the regulars but also equipped to takedown the large group orders with a smile and in quick fashion. Offering some light food options and a bar fully stocked for a variety of patrons, Olde Queens certainly hold it own in the ever growing Hub City. read more

Rutgers College Kids Hangout This place was recommended by a local bartender and we found it as a good recommendation - this place is not for the faint of heart; it's frequented by the local college crowd, but before a tailgate, they're well behaved. Honestly, I got shoved by the bouncer working there when I was just waiting for my card to be returned. It was so embarrassing when everyone started saying the same exact thing when I was simply waiting for my card. The staff was not cooperative and was very rude. Stopped in here after NOT being here for about 22 years...and it was like stepping back in time. Granted, the place was empty (we were there on a friday afternoon), but the beer was cold and reasonably priced, the bartender was pleasant and engaging, and the place didn't smell like an ashtray like it did 22 years ago. Olde Queens was never my main hangout in college, but I certainly spent enough money there for it to be a semi-regular hangout. I was shocked at how small it was...I always thought it was bigger-maybe this is why I always come home with beer spilled on me at some point-I'm sure it gets packed quickly. I've been here maybe once or twice a few years ago. Back when I was young, probably 25ish or so. Came here the other night (Wednesday) with a friend and it was pretty dead. She was the only girl in the joint actually. She brought that up, not me! And then the Irish came. "COME ON YOU BOYS IN GREEN!" They kept chanting that over and over again and I didn't know what they were saying until my Irish friend pointed it out in the video I sent her. Wow, so my daughter brought me to Olde Queens Tavern when I visited her at Rutgers. I was so confused why it was such a popular spot considering the experience was truly terrible. The bouncer left me with a bad first impression, he was not pleasant and was almost judging me for being an older gal... I just felt unwelcomed when I first came in. I was hopeful that the rest of the night would be alright though. I then go to order and the bartender was this cute young girl, pretty nice but not very attentive. I stood at the bar for about 5 minutes before I was helped and it wasn't even that busy. I used to work in the service industry, so I get it, but she definitely could've done a better job. I then was told that they didn't have Michelob Ultra (odd because it is quite a popular beer). I ended up getting another drink, that was not entirely to my liking, but it was fine I suppose. I then go to use the bathroom and it was HEINOUS. Toilet paper was everywhere, every surface was wet, and it was just downright disgusting. While I was waiting in line to use the bathroom I overheard a conversation about girls going back to their "dorms" not sure if upperclassmen can live in dorms at Rutgers, but pretty sure these girls were too young to be 21. My daughter and I stayed a bit before I told her I wasn't enjoying Olde Queens Tavern and she took me across the street to a place called Scarlett Pub. That place was fabulous with top-notch customer service! They had cheap drinks and great music. I would definitely recommend that bar over Olde Queens Tavern. I won't be back and I told my daughter to find a new spot as well. read more

I like this place a lot. I am somewhat ashamed to admit how many times I've been here (I'm lured every time by the promise of free food). Thursdays from 5-8 p.m. = free wings (bbq, hot, teriyaki) Fridays from 5-8 p.m. = free blitzburgers. They don't skimp on em' either. :O The wings aren't taken from scrawny slivers of chickens, and the burgers are pretty awesome (especially considering the fact that they're free). I usually come here with several friends from school after class and we consume edible substances until (1) 8 p.m. comes around, or (2) we go to someone's place to play Settlers because we're awesome like that. I usually order iced tea or lemonade or buy someone else a drink because clearly, I'm a raging alcoholic, but my friends say the bartenders here definitely don't skimp on the alcohol. read more

Guinness Draught. $5.75 =) This is an old school bar. You walk in and you definitely smell it. It's a typical college bar that's noisy and serve cheap drinks in plastic cups (that's a good thing....I think). The bartender at night is pretty cool. The place is pretty dark. Two TVs at the bar.....TINY TINY TVs, though. Although having both TVs centered in the middle of the bar would be ideal, they decided to place each TV at the opposite ends of the bar. Kinda annoying when you're trying to catch a game. I honestly come here only for the Gunness (which they pour correctly....2 part pour in a proper pint glass). I also occasionally order their blitzburgers as take out as well. Although they're not the best burgers around, they are tastier than other bar food I've had. And it's always nice to go home after a night of drinking with a greasy burger. This place really only deserves 3 stars, but since the bartender is cool, I'll give them an extra star. read more

One of the more popular bars at Rutgers when you just turn 21. A huge frat and sorority bar. I loved this place when I just turned 21 and it was really awesome, but as you get older, the scene just isn't as much fun as it used to be. It's overly crowded and always has a line, sometimes for no reason at all. The drinks specials on certain nights are good, if you just want a beer, going to the cart in the back corner is the easiest. On the weekends you can barely move and it's uncomfortable. The Blitzburger attached is really good if you're going during a happy hour or on a Wednesday for poker night. When there's room, it's great to dance and goof off, the DJ is good on weekends/Tuesday. During football/Homecoming season, they have a limo going from there to the stadium and good morning drinks and bagels, pretty cool. The bathroom is ridiculously small and it doesn't have a door, only a shower curtain to cover the toilet.. awkward! I enjoy this place when it's not overly crowded and there is outdoor seating to Blitzburger, which is sort of related to Queens. read more

This review is for Blitzburger. I've only eaten at the one in New Brunswick, so I don't know how the two locations compare. Huge selection of burgers, some of the appetizers were good too. Fast delivery, a lot of food for the price. It's good and clean, too, but I get bored of it fast (but some of my friends eat it every day or two). You're not going to find anything spectacular but the burgers are definitely interesting. You can also design your own if you want, super easy to do if you order online through scarletmenus.com. My favorite thing to get is actually the California Turkey Sandwich- its a great combo of turkey breast, avacado, lettuce and some kind of aeoli on flatbread. It's a nice change of pace from Fat Sandwiches, which 4 out of ever 5 food joints in New Brunswick seems to specialize in. Blitzburger's got good shakes, too. read more

So here's the deal: Old Queens is a die hard college bar, always slammed on weekends with a long line of people waiting to get rotated in. The line isn't meant to be annoying, it's just that the bar is small and the bouncers have to be mindful of the maximum occupacy. I like Old Queens because it's a pretty fun place, everyone is mellow and just there to have a great time, you don't find a lot of annoying trouble maker types here and the drinks are cheap. That being said, the place is always cramped, you usually leave with liquor spilled on you and the dance floor is typically soaked with beer. Helpful tips: Ladies- try not to wear your good shoes here to avoid getting them ruined while dancing in beer. Also be careful if you're wearing heals. The floor gets pretty slippery and if you enjoy dancing, you don't want to worry about falling and getting hurt. Also, the bathrooms don't have doors, but rather curtains that you pull across. The mens and womens stalls are literally 3 ft apart and face each other, making it a little awkward. If someone was drunk and wanted to be a jerk, the curtains are pretty much a calling card for them. read more

Olde Queens is definitely one of the go-to bars as a Rutgers student. This is not my favorite bars, but all my friends come here. Also, it's very easy to bump into all your Rutgers classmates and friends, so it has a nice crowd. Though there are times, especially before 11/12, when it is rather quiet and empty, the bar becomes extremely lively and packed after 12 and usually has the space for the huge capacity. The best is that they have very cheap drinks! The location is also wonderful since it's on Easton and is in close proximity of Knight Club and Scarlet Pub. However, the place can get pretty messy and dirty. It's no surprise to have drinks spilled on you. read more

This is a typical college crowd bar. If you can handle it however, Thursday are not your typical bar eve. During happy hour they offer $2 mixed drinks and $1 mini bottle beers. The best part is however the free, all you can eat wings. They continue to fill three large trays all through out happy hour with Teriyaki, Bar-B-Q and spicy. UPDATE: NO MORE FREE WINGS. Really like this place. Drinks are cheap, and they have a pretty good selection. When it's not that late, I usually grab a beer and dinner (they have pretty good burgers) with a couple of friends. The darts area is usually open, so we play a couple of games. I love this bar late at night too. It is smaller than most bars on Easton, so it gets crowded quicker, but there is always room to dance. Most bars just let everyone in, but they actually take into consideration the max capacity. That also means there's a long line there later into the night (around 1 am). It is a typical college bar at night, so I would steer away if you're not looking for that type of scene anymore. Overall, awesome place and will come back! read more

This is my favorite bar in New Brunswick. They're a Rutgers tradition! They have specials just about every night of the week. My favorite is $2.50 Bacardi Thursdays. Their mixed drinks tend to be on the strong side, so you're definitely getting your money's worth. Getting a drink can be a hassle, but it shouldn't take too long, assuming that the bartenders can see you. The bar itself is on the small side, which can be great during school breaks. When Rutgers is in session, though, you definitely want to be in before midnight. After that, the entire bar is almost always packed. read more

I am rating this place strictly on the vibe and the overall quality of my time spent here as I have never ordered drinks here. I've frequented this place several times on a Friday. As expected, it's a college crowd. What I like about this place is that they play very good dance music imo and will sometimes play some classic throwbacks. Given that, the people there are very upbeat, good-spirited and love to dance and have fun. Despite the venue being very small, crammed, and often having alcohol drenched floors, that has not stopped us from getting small circles and dance offs going. While this is not a super club, it is a great place to go where you are almost certain to feel uninhibited to let loose, dance or just jump around as the clientele are young, unpretentious, and set on having fun. read more

Came here with my brother for his birthday, who is still attending RU. Let me first just say, wow! The kids today at RU are really dumb, at least the ones that I saw out here that night. As an RU Alum, I will never visit this bar again. This is actually a review for Blitzburgers (http://www.blitzburgers.com/), a central NJ burger chain that happens to be attached to this bar. You could eat them in the bar or at the outdoor seating area on Mine Street. They have 30 different double-stuffed burgers along with salads, milkshakes, sandwiches, and typical burger place appetizers/sides. My sister and I got the aloha burger and the south of the burger along with a mango twist shake. Although I am not a fan of double-stuffed burgers, I didn't think that the meat overpowered the rest of the burger. The patties were juicy and the different gourmet burger variations ensure that I will come back to try more. Price-wise, it's equivalent to a burger meal at Red Robin. My sister loved the milk shake, although I personally would have preferred a stronger mango flavor. I found it to be decent otherwise. read more

This place is terrible. The place needs some up keeping. I am all for low-key, shabby looking dive bars but seriously the girls bathrooms don't even have doors on them. They have curtains. I can only imagine how many drunken accidental walk-ins have occurred because of that. I think you can afford some doors on the bathroom.It is quite nerve wrecking to be doing your business while constantly being worried that someone is just going to swing open the curtain or trying to make sure there are no gaps in the curtain. The bartenders are okay (probably because they have a higher turnover rate than the security), but the security/bouncers are really rude. I see the same ones every time I come in, and i don't come in that often. I have some bad run in with the staff every time I go whether it be a rude encounter or the staff shoving me because I was in their way. This happens even when the the bar is not that crowded at all and I am only about a beer or two in, so I know I was not drunkenly in the way. Even so, a simple "excuse me" would have sufficed. Also we had arrived there with my friends pretty early and I guess they move the tables around after a certain time. This is fine but the manner in which they asked was absolutely literally pulling out our chairs as we had barely collected all of our stuff to move. All in all, I would only go to this place as a last resort (like say if every other bar in NB was closed on a holiday lol). There really are way better options in the area. This is not the only place with cheap drinks. Would definitely go to Knight club any day. They have way better service and friendlier staff for a college bar. read more
