No atmophere. Old and dingy. My southwestern chicken wrap was terrible. It had chopped wilted lettuce, small amount of chicken, maybe a table spoon of salsa, no avocado or cheese.. should be made like the menu description... Better yet take it off the menu! The wrap was so soggy. Did not come with the cole slaw or pickle. The server apologized and brought me a few slices of very mushy avocado, 2 pickel chips and 1 spoonful of coleslaw.. Our family has been going to Lory's Lakeside for several years now and we have always been pleased with the food, the service, the atmosphere and who doesn't love that view? Yesterday, January 26, 2024 our experience was altered by their owner Venkat. As stated, we have visited with family and friends for a long time. Recently, we started bringing our club there as well. Yesterday, we made a reservation for 15 and they did mention by phone that there would be an 18% surcharge because of the group size. Historically, and believe me, our club visits a lot of restaurants, that surcharge is a mandatory gratuity that can really only be challenged if you receive poor service or they fail to meet your expectations. Not the case here despite our food taking an extraordinary amount of time to come out. We're aware they have been chronically short-staffed. Our server, who has been a friend to us for years, explained how this surcharge has been mandated by her boss (Venkat) and that it does NOT cover gratuity. It goes to him and then there is the expected gratuity beyond that. Fearing we were being scammed, we challenged the bill which brough Venkat to our table. At first he insisted this is a NJ Dept. of Labor law (DOL covers employees, not surcharges on bills). Later, he changed his wording and stated they have the "option" to add a service charge to our bill for large groups (which we were aware of -- for gratuities); the entire time insulting our collective intelligence by explaining the difference between a surcharge and a gratuity as if speaking to school children. If you scroll down in these reviews, you'll see that Karen P. of Newark had the exact same problem a few months ago. Though I don't see where she recovered her money (shame). Venkat finally removed the surcharge from our bill. We all added more cash to our delightful server's tip to assure that she was compensated for her extraordinary (as always) service. Mr. Venkat, I'm pretty sure if this was a "law," as you stated, you could not circumvent said law just because our group was unhappy about it. You still have to check ID's even if I complain about that right? The fact you removed the surcharge tells us you were trying to put one over on us and from previous complaints you've pulled this on others too. You're doing a disservice to your customers, your employees and ultimately yourself if your business suffers the way it should. DO BETTER! p.s. I had a group of 15 people, and the owner told us that an 18% gratuity would be included. So, we added an extra 2% to bring it up to the standard 20%. As we were leaving, the waitress told us that she didn't receive any of the 18%. I felt so bad that I gave her an additional 20% myself. How does the owner justify this? If they don't know you and there's a large party that comes in after you... Never again. 2 1/2 hours and NO DINNER. We had to call it over and leave. There is literally ZERO excuse. People served all around us, all whom arrived after us. "The kitchen was backed up" was a poor response by the waitress. Female manager did tell us she understood our frustration and comped our drinks and appetizer. Apparently the newer owner was there and said nothing to us, but asked my son if we paid our bill when he went back in to retrieve his phone he left on the table. I would not return ever. read more

This is a reliable pub when you want a good sandwich and strong drink. Four of us visited for lunch today - it was fairly busy and the single server (shout-out to Helene) worked her tail off. We all enjoyed our food. My sister ordered a Jersey burger and as soon as the server brought it out, she realized they forgot the pork roll. She came back with a few slices nice and fast. Long Island iced teas packed a punch & went down nice. It's a bright little pub overlooking beautiful Farrington Lake. We're moving soon & this is one of the places we'll miss. read more

My Central Jersey Yelp buds, Chris, Marc and John, were always high on Lory's Lakeside, but this was the first time for me. Haven't seen those dudes since the pandemic, but I found myself only 2 miles away, and decided the time was right. First we saw the lake from which Lory added her name. Very scenic. The parking lot ran along the shore, but there was plenty of room to leave the wheels and enjoy the gazebo, grass and dock. In better weather, the outside picnic tables are the place to be. On this overcast Super Bowl Sunday, an inside straight was the wiser choice. I was in Eagles' Green, yet more of the peeps around the large bar were in Chiefs' Red. I guessed we were across the border of Eagle land and now in Giant land, where the Birds are not always welcome. Still, no one seemed to mind and we had a good time. Our food (Turkey Rueben & Italian Hot Dog) were both pretty good. The roll for the dog was noteworthy. Fries were hot and crisp. My beautiful lady could barely finish half that turkey, Swiss and Russian monster. Prices were reasonable and service friendly and petite. We only get to this part of Jersey once or twice a year for Grave Sweeping Days, but what a great way to overcome the solemnity of that moment, then with a more upbeat and buoyant repartee at Lory's Lakeside? The food was amazing I really like the pizza I ordered took it home it was too big. The service was wonderful the waiter was so friendly and helpful. As far as ambiance goes it seems like a really nice place to take the family or a date out for dinner. I would say noise level was a bit high but is the weekend dinner rush so it is expected. It's a first come first serve basis so there is no reservations. But if you call you can find out a wait time . Will definitely be coming back once the nice weather comes back. read more

This has been my go to bar since I became of drinking age as it has been for all of my friends and family. Since the latest owner took over a few years back it is seeming closer and closer to one of the worst episodes of bar rescue. The owner has no respect for his staff, ridiculed them in front of customers, talks to them like they are stupid in front of customers while he has a drink in his hand playing pool with his friends. That is if he is even there. He dissappears for months on end to go on vacations in foreign countries and cant be bothered to return when his manager who orders all of the bar supplies DIES! Since then everything is out of stock, all long term staff who keeps customers coming back are leaving, he rigged up the bathroom door with duck tape instead of fixing the door closer so people get trapped inside, the food quality is disgusting and gets people sick, and he wants to add more pool tables after removing the jukebox when you cant even sit near the one without getting a poolstick up your a$$ while eating dinner!.... please send Jon Taffer to this bar... my friends and I want this a$$hole to sell or DO BETTER. read more

We made a reservation for lunch for 15 people the day before we went. When we arrived, there were two employees working - one bartender/waitress and one cook. The restaurant was cold and we didn't receive our food for almost 1 1/2 hours after ordering. When we received our bill, Lory's Lakeside charged an 18 percent service charge for large groups plus a 20 percent tip for the waitress. I understand the 20 percent tip but I do not understand the 18 service charge as what service was the owner providing as he should have staffed accordingly since we waited so long for our food and the restaurant was cold. The owner is getting our business so why is he charging an additional service fee. read more

This was my first time coming to Lory's lakeside. I heard so many good things about this place. Maybe I caught them on an off day. I went on Thursday 5/29/25 for karaoke. It was four of us in our group. Upon arrival and first glance it wasn't too crowded. We waited until everyone in our group was present and then placed our food order. After approximately an hour and 45 minutes we got our food. Mine was cold but I ate it because I was hungry and had waited long enough for it to come. My friend who comes all the time apologized and told the waitress about my food although I didn't want her to do so. She asked if I wanted something else I said no thank you ‍. Everyone was very polite about the situation. I'd come back to give them another chance to redeem themselves for my first time bad experience. I did however enjoy the karaoke sessions with the crowd. My friend and I went here tonight. Service was awful. We waited forever for drinks. We ordered unsweetened iced tea. She got the order wrong and brought raspberry iced tea. Then we ordered food. And waited 30 minutes for soup. And then waited again for sandwiches. Food was just mediocre at best. We won't be going back. Upsetting because it is a great location. read more

Lory's is a "bar and grill". This review is about "bar" not "grill", in other words, you could visit for fun and drinks, or you might be there for dinner, but I have opposite opinions about these two things. It's a fine place to have drinks. There is indoor and outdoor seating. It is indeed beside a lake. The crowd is friendly and informal, and clearly many are regulars who know each other. Drink service on a crowded Friday night was not light-speed, but good enough. Speaking of fun, Friday night was karaoke night. It was my first time, so maybe Friday isn't always karaoke, so call ahead. The karaoke was well-run by DJ Mike, who made sure there was a good mix of oldies, newer songs, rock, pop, and ballads. Came on a Saturday night and sat at the bar to eat, drink and listen to some live music. Good thing we got there early. We were immediately warned that they were two people short. We ordered some beer and apps right away. General tsos chicken and fried clams were decent. The place had about 8 beer on tap. My blue moon and my wife's bud light were at least cold and fresh. As the place started to fill up the staff was completely overwhelmed. Being at the bar helped as I could kind of strong arm service from them. Except for one older lady who seemed to be the manager, no one was familiar with tending bar or anything else related to service. Orders were being taken and never sent to the kitchen. Visited this restaurant approximately a month ago..have been there before..last time service was horrible..bartender was too busy chatting at bar to wait on tables..had to actually go to bar to get her attention ....menus were sticky and dirty..worse part is at 1am I got violently sick at home..up all night with diarrhea n vomiting..next day fever..was sick for 3 days..CLEAN YOUR MENU'S!!!!..Stomach viruses are very easily transmitted from person to person..I blame it on the filthy menu..dout I will ever go back..what a shame..nice location on the lake.. read more

I had bookmarked this ages ago because of the outdoor seating availability. However, on this visit construction kept us off the deck and in the small bar area. We were greeted, a bit gruffly, by a bartender. She thawed a bit and served our beer without much conversation. We will chalk any crankiness to the construction. The husband immediately alerted me that we would be one and done. I guess the bar just opened and the stale air was affecting his allergies. Miraculously a fan or AC went on and that cleared things up. Maybe they just opened up. We kept to our "one and done" pact and left. Regulars kept to themselves and food that was ordered looked good, fried but good. It also looked like a pool league was getting set up. The outside area had a big canopy and was right on the water. The only odd thing was all the No Trespassing signs. They were everywhere and we thought it was funny. A decent spot, wish the outside was open or that it was a bit more happening. read more

Oh c'mon people. Sure, Lory's doesn't live up to even half its potential, considering the awesome location they have right on the lake. But Lory's has character. Or shall I say CHARACTERS? Lory's is a really strange joint filled with really strange, but often interesting people. It's a dive, to be sure. Characters galore. Other bartenders describe Lory's as the place all the people who got banned from all the other bars in the area go. Indeed. That's my kind of joint. Never a dull time here. If you've ever been to Rudy's in Hells Kitchen, New York City, then you'll know what I mean. Do note though that I have never tried the food, and I'm not sure I ever plan on trying the food... UPDATE: Started trying to food ever since Hurricane Sandy hit and Lory's kept their power. It's surprisingly fresh and good! Definitely get the sliders! read more

Stopped in on a Saturday for lunch as the Golden Lion Inn wasn't open yet (boo!). Lory's was a happy alternative though, which I found via Yelp. My bf and I just wanted a quick lunch and a drink and Lory's delivered. There were definitely no shortage of regulars at the bar, so it's definitely a bit divey but the atmosphere is a notch up from what you'd think of when you think of a dive bar. The location is gorgeous - as the name implies it's on a lake! (or at least a small body of water...) Service was polite and efficient, food was good, prices fair :) We ended up having nachos and a french dip style sandwich to share (it was highly recommend to us by the staff - they even said to add mozzarella to it to make it to die for - and they were right!) If you're looking for a quick bite to eat and a drink at the bar and hang with some locals, this is your spot! :) Can't wait to come back and sit outside! read more

The most beautiful bar around. Lorys Lakeside offers terrific views, especially this time of year, with the leaves changing. It is in the middle of the woods and has a beautiful lake right outside. There are tables set up right on the water to enjoy the tranquility. The bar itself is so cozy. It's decorated for the seasons and there is a fireplace as well. There is an internet jukebox and pool tables! The bartenders are really nice and the menu is killer!! The food here is so, so good. I feel it's a bit pricey though and the portions aren't too big. A basket of fried shrimp is literally 5 shrimp. They are incredibly tasty, but 5 definitely doesn't constitute a basket. I would also recommend the crab pretzel, kind of on the small side again, but really tasty. I absolutely love coming here. If you are in the area definitely stop in and you will not be disappointed. It is a far cry from any crowded, noisy bar. You will feel right at home. read more

Haven't been here in like a bazillion years. Was imo a dive bar with some eccentric people. Last nite I got to see the renovations which were an improvement. They do karaoke on Friday nights, believe me I didn't even make an attempt to go up there. Nice crowd and pretty diverse. My friends n I had a nice time. My friend sang many songs bc he has a gift to sing. I ordered nachos which weren't the greatest, cheese was barely melted and waited quite long for them. So was expecting them to be epic, fail. My friends sandwiches looked really good tho. Maybe next time. Obviously if you go on a Friday nite don't expect to be able to talk to your friends bc you won't be able to. Ended up screaming to speak. Anyway nice size bar and eating area. Service was friendly and on the ball. My husband and I always passed Lory's and were intrigued to try it. Looks really cute by the lake! We finally got the chance to go there for dinner. We weren't really sure what to expect but it definitely had the divey bar feel. We got the fried buffalo chicken bites as an appetizer and they didn't taste very good, almost tasted old and freezer burned. For dinner I got pasta and clam sauce and it was good, even came with shelled clams not just the bits in the sauce. My husband I believe got a pulled pork sandwich and he enjoyed it. Service was great, friendly staff for sure. The atmosphere was not what we were looking for that night but not saying we would never go back. We've been going to Lory's for about 7 years now. There are new owners now but the restaurant still looks the same. The menu has been shortened and has some new items added. In the 7 years we have been going there I can say I have never had a bad meal. The staff is very friendly. Stop in and give them a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

This place would be natural for a Jake Tapper improvement project. Food's okay for a bar. The place has just been refurbished, but the attitude towards customers and service is simply awful. Menu items are described confusingly at best. Hidden charges appear to be rampant on the menu (and on your bill, which they unapologetically collect without remorse). But the worst thing is the attitude toward the consumer. Patrons are left waiting for service or their check while the owners gorge themselves on food, and sending the help back for other items. Then you wait some more while they share drinks (even the barmaid was downing boilermakers - yes, that's right). And this was at lunchtime. I wonder what their condition is like later in the afternoon/evening! Pass this place up, unless you enjoy rewarding a very mediocre place where their mission statement is seemingly "The customer is never right in our books, but we don't care about them anyway." read more
