God save the Queens!…read more As you wander the streets in a wunderlust of lights & spirits that run rampant upon Rutgers University, you might stumble into the Olde Queens, one of the finest dive bars I've ever come across. Stepping inside on a Wednesday evening, we were greeted by a lonely bartender serving a few good men at the bar, anxiously awaiting their next order. The bar is stocked with the standard brands and their tap pumps eight beers, a few craft brews but mostly standard names to tide you over. As a bartender makes his way towards my friend and I, bowl of popcorn in hand, he sets the salty snack down in front of us, and makes swift work of our sudsy beverages. As we acclimated ourselves amongst the quiet mumbles from the other patrons, the soft rumble of rock music playing in the background, all were jolted quickly from their seats as a pack of sorority girls made their way through the single wooden doorway. The bar quickly found itself engulfed in orders of sugary shots, each closing out their separate tabs in some convoluted way that made my head spin. The bartender and staff though had themselves on point, as though this is a common occurrence, expected to happen within their bar. The jukebox rang soon after of 2010 radio hits and songs of independence and freedom that even Francis Scott Key would be surely proud of. The bar area held about 12 to 15 stools, while some small tables lined the wall, each offering space for four to six people. As you make your way to the back, the tables became larger, catering the more guests if you wanted to bring the entire crew. The staff was very friendly and easy going, certainly hosting to the needs of the regulars but also equipped to takedown the large group orders with a smile and in quick fashion. Offering some light food options and a bar fully stocked for a variety of patrons, Olde Queens certainly hold it own in the ever growing Hub City.

Rutgers College Kids Hangout…read more This place was recommended by a local bartender and we found it as a good recommendation - this place is not for the faint of heart; it's frequented by the local college crowd, but before a tailgate, they're well behaved. We also found a number of away team fans (like ourselves there) and were treated with respect. They even played a couple of the hype songs for our team, which I thought was a good show of character. Love the interior, a lot of character. Thanks

So, when I saw that one of my faves, Cece Peniston, was going to be there and the tickets were so reasonable, I had to jump at the chance. I know that promotion for specific events are separate than the venue itself, so this is for the space, drinks, and vibe only.. Since I read such reviews about the place being in need of a good cleaning and other not so good things, I was actually pleasantly surprised when I found it not to be as skeevy as I'd expected. The bartender was nice looking, friendly, and made a great drink. Wonderful cosmo! The DJ was playing great music.. great old New Brunswick college town vibes with the pool table and Rutgers paraphernalia around. I wasn't too happy about the downstairs area where they put on the shows.. it seemed like an old church basement, just sorta bootleg. They said that they remodeled, so not certain how it was before. I'd much rather be upstairs. I would probably return to enjoy a laid back round of a pool during happy hour. It's really a vibe to me.

Huey's Knight Club can get really busy the later it gets. This place is definitely a hot spot with Rutgers students. Their open 7 days a week from 7p until 2am. The drinks are very reasonably priced. Lots of Hapoy Hour Specials. They have Twisted Tea on Tap, along with Truly Hard Setzler. Huey's Power Hour- Every Sunday-Thursday( except special events) from the time they open until 11p there is $2 Well Drinks, Lits, and Miller Lites. Huey's has a nice selection of craft beers. They hold fun events here too like a Toga party. Popcorn is served, but no food. . The staff is always very friendly and they have good service. The owner is also very friendly and accommodating . They are strict with ID proofing but they need to be because of college kids and underage drinking, I like that they even have a quick breathalyzer test you can take to check to see if you're able to drive legally. Most bars don't offer this. I think it cost 1 dollar to use. There is street parking in front and all along the side roads. If your not fare, or decide to bar hop because there are several other bars within walking distance it's worth ubering. I came here for a staff/ friend reunion for an old bar that used to be in Green Brook, NJ which went by two different names depending on the year. It was called TJ Mc Turtles/ Jukebox Eddie's. The owner of Huey's Mark used to work there along with many others. We spent the afternoon reminiscing, eating, drinking and enjoying our reunion with good friends. You should definitely check out Huey's for a fun time!

A short walk later, I found myself at Destination Dogs, a place I had seen in photographs that suggested capaciousness. In reality, it is smaller.  This is not a complaint, just an observation.  I remember once hearing something about the contents of small packages. At 12:30 the place was full. Packed with humanity and appetite. I was seated quickly, as if someone had anticipated my hunger in advance. From the bar came the sound of construction crews discussing their midday rituals. Apparently this is where they come on Fridays, to repair themselves while they repair the city. It explained everything. Service was swift and attentive, a minor miracle given the crowd. I began with a Scotch egg, an item that seemed to have wandered in from another story entirely. I ordered it for that reason. I had always imagined my first Scotch egg would be eaten in an English pub under low ceilings and older regrets. Instead, here it was. Perfectly crisp, warm, and generous. The universe does not ask for permission. Then came the main event. The menu is an atlas of hot dogs. Domestic. International. Proteins in tube form arranged like possibilities. There is even an invitation to build your own, which I accepted. I attempted to recreate a favorite from Crif Dogs, a thing called the Spicy Redneck. Bacon wrapped dog. Pickled jalapenos. Coleslaw. Simple in theory. Destination Dogs improved upon it in every way that matters. The bacon crisped with purpose. The jalapenos spoke clearly. The coleslaw behaved. The hot dog itself seemed proud to be there. All of this, plus a 16 ounce beer, cost me about twenty five dollars with tip. A small price for order in a chaotic universe. Five stars. Not because perfection exists, but because this comes close enough to make the argument.

The staff is super friendly and know their way around the (very large) menu. Honestly, they have a hot dog or sausage combo for just about everyone. I let the bartender pick for me, and she nailed it. She chose an all-beef dog that was basically a Big Mac in hot dog form. I was skeptical at first, but wow this hit in all the right ways. Awesome presentation, even better flavor. I could've easily eaten three of these. I also tried the onion rings, the bartender warned me they were just "meh," and she wasn't wrong, lol. For round two, I went with an all-beef dog topped with pastrami this is basically a Reuben-style dog. Another win! Great flavor, great presentation. Overall, I'd totally recommend Destination Dogs if you're in the area. Just a heads up, if there's a game on, it gets loud. Like "can't-hear-your-friend-next-to-you" loud. But if that's your vibe, you'll love it.
