My friends and I shared several dishes, and everything had that homemade touch that reminded me of authentic Vietnamese cooking. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to explain the dishes in English to my friends who don't speak Vietnamese. He even brought us three additional slices of bánh mì to go with our bò kho (beef stew), since the dish only comes with two slices and there were five of us. Such a thoughtful gesture! O Lien Kitchen was packed during lunch on a Saturday. Not only was the parking lot full, but there was a bit of wait as well. Nonetheless, we added our name to the waitlist and was grateful there were only a couple of parties before us. We knew we wanted some of the Bahn Hue Plates but also didn't want too many of the same thing. The waiter offered some substitute options that worked for us. These "cakes" are still a rarity for us as they aren't found everywhere. * BH8. Sampler with substitutes $14.99 - Ours came with the 4 Loc La, 2 Nam, and 4 It Co Ram (instead of the 12 Beo and 3 It Tran). I actually think the waiter said he would sub the 12 Beo for the It Co Ram. I realize now we did not get any of the It Tran, which is a bit of a bummer. * BH1. Bahn Beo Chen $13.99 - We usually try to order this whenever we see it on the menu. * A5. Vietnamese Eggrolls Cha Gio $7.99 - Their deep-fried egg rolls were exactly how we wanted - with that extra blistery look to it. Not all Vietnamese restaurants serve it this way, so we do try to order it when we see it offered. * HS1. Sizzling Steak & Eggs $18.99 - We did ask for more bread to soak up the proteins on this dish. I'm not sure what happened because the bread took ridiculously long, and the restaurant had cleared up quite a bit by then. Most of our orders came out rather quickly, so it was weird with the long wait for the extra bread. I honestly think they forgot, and when someone finally remembered, it was put into the toaster to heat up then because it did arrive very hot versus the initial order. We had to get up and ask about it and two different waiters said it was coming out. Their house made chili oil definitely had a kick to it! Use it sparingly if it's your first go at it. We were curious about their Bun Bo Hue because there are so many options. The waiter did tell us it's their most popular dish and the pictures looked amazing. Overall, we had a good experience at O Lien Kitchen. The long wait for the bread did put a downer on the visit as it dragged on and the steak and eggs got cold as we waited. Came here during happy hour, which interestingly enough is after 4 PM, which works well for me after work. A mix of great flavors but lack of service and sufficient cleanliness that could be better. What I ordered for food: - P16 (Beef Rib & Brisket Pho): Since it was happy hour, this was a decent deal. The rib was solid! Very tender and tasty. The broth itself was clear and had that savory flavor that makes a good bowl of pho. Portions were huge though because it only comes in large. -BH2 (Bún Bò Huế Pork Hock): The broth was clear and rich which I liked, but unfortunately, the pork hock itself didn't taste like much and lacked flavor. Wouldn't get again. -BH5 (Bánh Lọc Trần) & BH7 (Bánh Ít Có Ram): The waiter recommended putting these two together as a combo, which worked out great. The starchy tapioca dumplings paired perfectly with the spicy fish sauce on the side, and the sweet rice flour dumplings on the shrimp crackers gave it a really satisfying crunch. Would order again, but I also can see how I wouldn't keep ordering cause can be a bit heavy and starchy. The Service: This is where the experience fell short. The restaurant wasn't filled at all, yet it took a long time for a server to bring us water and take our order. Throughout the meal, no one ever checked in or refilled our waters. When we were ready to leave, we couldn't get anyone's attention for a to-go container. Ambiance: My main concern was the dirtiness of the chairs and tables. There was leftover food from prior customers and stains. Also a fly kept getting close to our food, I was uncomfortable. We had a delicious lunch at O Lien. Although we typically go for pho or bun, we decided to try some new dishes. I highly recommend the steamed tapioca dumplings (BH5) and the fried rice crepes (HS6). I had a very good experience at O Lien. We had a big group of twelve adults, so we did have to wait a while to get a big enough table. I heard good things about this restaurant even though it is in a sketchier part of town. The restaurant feels clean and lounge-y because of the lights and sakura trees. They have a restroom in the back. Parking was easy in their lot. I had to wait for someone to leave before I could finally park. Next door to O Lien is a Louisiana crawfish spot. The menu is extensive. You can choose rice or noodles. They have a lot of different appetizers too. The bun bo hue is popular because of the rib bone. The meat portion size is good. Pho is 15% off everyday after 4PM! The A5 cha gio (egg rolls) are good. One order is $7.99 and comes with two pieces but cut in half. They were served with noodles. I wish they had more greens. BBH6 King bun bo hue was good. At $24.99, it came with all the meats, including the bone rib and pork knuckle. It wasn't spicy, but the spicy sauce they had at the table was very spicy. C5 shrimp rice plate $15.99 came with 2 egg rolls. The shrimp was grilled nicely, and the steamed rice (not broken rice) was good. Service was really good. Everything on my plate was tender and flavorful and they combined surprisingly well. The pork was my favorite but if this whole combo looks intimidating I think any of the individual proteins are worth ordering if you have a different preference. I came here with a group of friends who ordered things like pho, bun bo hue, and spring rolls and they all enjoyed their's as well. My only critique is that the wait for our food was pretty long. There are so many cool Viet restaurants in the area and I didn't know what to offer her (I just moved here from California). This place is awesome with modern decor and high ceilings! This is a fast casual place with great food. As I walked in I was greeted quickly and told I could pick my own seat. I spent a lot of time looking at the menu and no one bothered me. It was recommended by the owner of Savory Vietnam, my former favorite Vietnamese restaurant when they closed. They have an extensive menu with a variety of authentic and harder to find Vietnamese dishes. The bun bo hue was amazing, flavorful broth, quality ingredients, and large portion! Some say it's the best in Denver. (I don't disagree, although I still have more places to try.) I ordered the beef rib version. They have various versions with other protein choices, as well as a king bun bo hue which combines everything if you are really hungry! As a Bay Area Cali gal for over 25 years, I'm quite particular when it comes to Viet food as I got both my mama and MIL and my entire husband's family cooks Viet food very well. One of my favorite adventures is the ones experienced through taste. I love OC viet food as well, so when my cousin recommended this place, the food snob in me definitely said "really? Viet food in Denver? How can they even compare..." However... I was pleasantly surprised and humbled to know there is a hidden gem in this town after all. We had the banh beo, and by far, the best I've ever had. It was the exact right amount of dough- not too much, not too little. It had the pork rinds and the bits of dried shrimp, absolutely scrumptious. The bun bo hue is very flavorful, much more so that San Jose's famous BBH An Nam. They give you plenty of veggies and shrimp paste and very generous with the meat portion. Denver is much colder than Cali, so this really hit the spot. It's hard to find a good authentic delicious bun bo hue in Colorado but this place nails it with loads of meat and pipping hot broth! The combination noodle bowl had PERFECT ratio of noodles and meat. Most viet places just top the bowl with meat making it look it has a good amount of meat but it's just one layer on top. This is the crown jewel of Vietnamese restaurants not only in Denver but in any Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to. Everything I've gotten there I have to stop for a minute to savor the incredible flavor. I used to go to PHO 75 on Havana since they were the only restaurant I could find that had incredible Banh Canh Cua (Crab Noodle Soup) But sadly they closed. After many failed attempts to eat at their old location, I finally made it. This will the first of many visits. We were seated right away and service was friendly and attentive and quick. Get the hot tea if you know how to drink Asian tea because it was good and helps with digestion. This is one of the only Vietnamese restaurants I have been in Colorado where they serve Vietnamese appetizers. We need to come back with more people in our party so we can sample the variety of appetizers. The food was delicious. The bun bo hue and pho đặc biệt were a rich nice broth. The broth alone was flavorful without needing to add hoisin or fish sauce. You can order a bowl to share with your party. The bánh xèo and bánh bẻo were so tasty. The bánh xèo was crunchy with each bite and it's loaded with pork belly, shrimp, bean sprouts, etc. The bánh bẻo was also delicious with all of the toppings. The nem lụi was delicious as well and it's a diy spring roll dish. I like that cucumbers are cut in slices so it makes wrapping easier. Overall, just so good. Food comes out fast. Service is nice. Looking for some solid BBH and Hue food in general is hard to come by in Denver. We had been trying to go to O Lien when they first opened at their old location, but never could get up there. Finally, they opened a little closer and we were able to drop by on a weekend night. The restaurant is spacious enough to have a bigger party , which is nice. We have always been seated promptly , but I have seen there be a line before. The BBH is flavorful and is quite a big portion. We also order the combo banh hue plate and that always satisfies my cravings because you get a little bit of everything. I have also tried the Bun rieu and it's not bad at all. Growing up in a Vietnamese household with a mom who owned a Vietnamese restaurant years ago, I can tell you I am the biggest snob when it comes to Bun Bo Hue and Pho. But let me tell you, this place did not disappoint. It tastes almost homemade. Chef definitely made it with love.
