A little south of Plaza de España, our local Madrileños took us to one of their favorite restaurants in Madrid. O Corruncho has a rustic seafaring vibe with funny comic strips on the wall.
The owner holds court at a desk at the front and will bring you a menu with the daily dishes, which changes all the time depending on the day's catch. The menu has specials that are attached by clothespins. Everything we had was extraordinary and awakened our tastebuds at each moment.
We had a spectacular feast with amazing friends who showed us all the best places around Madrid.
Alcachofas: Alcachofas are grilled artichokes with jamón.
Merluza: The next dish contained medallions of hake, a sweet white fish, that tops a round of the most tender potato, garnished on top with chives.
Pulpo con Patates a la Pimienta: Octopus tentacles are grilled, then cut into little coins, and coated with an olive oil and smoked paprika sauce with big chunks of tender potatoes. It is served on a round wooden platter and you need to grab some crusty bread and sop up all the flavors.
Chipirones: Little baby squids and tentacles are placed in a row over luscious soft scalloped potatoes. They are covered in olive oil, parsley, and garlic.
The final dish is a colossal pan with hake, manta rays, monkfish, and mussels in a garlic, olive oil, and lemon broth. The broth has been infused with the tremendous ingredients so that the flavor truly is redolent of the treasures of the sea. Yet, the seafood in this dish still has considerable flavor independent from the broth and is soft, succulent, and flaky.
Filloas: For dessert, crepes filled with cream are rolled up and flambéed at the table.
At the end of the meal, there is a flight of orujo with different colors and flavors. There is a cream version, one that tastes like coffee, a red herbal one, a green anise one, and a clear one that just tastes strong. read more
