Talberna del Chato is a small tapas bar located close to Puerta del Sol in the heart of Madrid. It offers a variety of unique and tasty dishes. We walked in and seated immediately at the bar prior to the dinner time rush. The friendly owner enthusiastically gave us his suggestions. The dishes came shortly in small glass containers that were neatly arranged. We ordered the menu for two, which included prawn nests, crispy chicken, partridge pate, seafood salad, mojo sauced potato, and our choice of salmorejo and sirloin on fries. It even came with sangria for two, so it was great value for the price. The chicken, salmorejo and potato were very well-seasoned by the chef, and we enjoyed all of the menu dishes. We even tried the fresh beef tartar for the first time, which fortunately came with bread to paste it. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at this tapas bar, which felt more attentive, unique and less rushed compared to many of those we tried in busy Barcelona. We found this place on Yelp and we thought we'd give it a try. This place was pretty empty but we wanted to relax, have some wine and snacks. This was the perfect spot. Great vibes, friendly staff, and amazing chatos. I wish I took more pictures. I swore I did but I think my husband deleted them by mistake and they are not in my deleted files.... ugh~ Anyhow, the food was really good, the staff was awesome and the whole vibe was perfect. Delicious with serious amounts of alcohol. For food we got the ham platter( a must in Spain.... Still haven't tasted ham which wasn't good in this part of the world), shrimp nest and ham croquettes. (4.5 stars) Stumbled in here for lunch after struggling to find a place that could seat six late afternoon and so glad we did. All of the dishes we had were very solid, the prices super reasonable, the wine cheap and smooth, the service great, and the restaurant empty so it was a very peaceful meal. Not a single plate disappointed and we tried about 10 different ones. The standouts to me were the vegetables sticks, which were light and had a killer mango base, as well as the crispy chicken, which had awesome mouthfeel and came served a top great tangy sauce. Amazing find! Great value for the quality of food and atmosphere. A few blocks from the heart of Sol, this small place was upbeat, and packed. We were lucky that one two-top just paid their bill, got up, and left. After cleaning up the table and setting the table we were promptly seated. Other folks after us were not so lucky, waiting 35-45 minutes to get seated. Having gotten a quick glimpse of their kitchen (small and tight quarters), it was amazing knowing that to see the rhythmic pace of delicious food coming out of that kitchen. We ordered a variety of tapas dishes all good but several bear mentioning - the prawns nest (deep fried prawn) was artfully done, tasted good as we gobbled it up. The mini burgers cooked were cooked medium rare and well seasoned. The crispy chicken (think chicken karaage) paired well with their sweet and sour dipping sauce with a touch spice. The steak tarare blended fairly well, a touch too much mustard that took some attention from the quality of meat and lost track of some of the other flavors. Their seafood paella - solid and generous with seafood accompanying the rice (in fact this had more seafood than the seafood paella at 7 Portes in Barcelona and that paella order was three times the size of Taberna del Chato's portion). Amazing food!!! I can't forget the flavors... small well made international tapas. We were two and shared ravioli with truffle, patatas with some dressing, beef in takiaky sauce, duck confit, tuna with sea weed salad and crispy chicken with sweet and sour sauce... Wow!!! If you feel like eating chicken you'll be happy otherwise it won't bow you away. Croquettes de Jamon - ball of breaded cheese with bits of Jamon served over fries. They spoke fluent English and made great recommendations including the: Partridge pate: best thing we ate! My wife and I were on our 10th year anniversary, and we looked up this place on yelp. We ordered the tapas sampler for 2 so that we could get a variety of tapas dishes, and we were very satisfied with what we ate. We were not disappointed with a single one of the dishes and we especially liked the crispy chicken and birds nest tapas. The service was great, although it was our waiter's first night. Even though a couple of mistakes occurred (wrong tapas dish, and he needed to double check a few things from the menu), he was still very polite and corrected any problems that were encountered. We would definitely recommend this place to others and would go back in a heartbeat. read more

Went here with a friend on Saturday night and was amazed by this hidden gem. Everything from the food to the service was just amazing! My friend and I walked in and even though it was about 11pm we were able to find a table right by the door. A waiter automatically greeted us and gave us a menu. I took a look at the menu and was just amazed by the assortment of tapas, drinks, entrees, and desserts. I stopped drooling for just a second and took a look around at the restaurant. The restaurant is lighted very nicely and the tables are arranged in a way that you are able to hear the person next to you, while still feeling the cool, fun, and relaxing vibe. The bar was long and wide and had a variety of drinks on display. The entire restaurant just felt fun and laid back. After continuing to drool over the menu I decided to order the curry chicken and the fried chicken with a glass of white wine. My friend told me that everything here was really good and nothing was bad on the menu--she was correct. Out came our tapas and I love that they came in drinking cups. The food was just enough that I did not feel overwhelmed or pressured to eat so much and wasn't too little that I would be asking for more. The curry chicken was not well seasoned or spicy, but I loved that it came with couscous and a light brown sauce that complemented the chicken very well. The fried chicken came with this amazing sweet and sour sauce that kicked the chicken into high gear--especially compared to the curry chicken. I wanted more of the fried chicken, but my stomach said no. The wine was chilled just right and to finish up our tapas we were offered a shot of patxaran--which reminded me of licorice. This 3 euro glass of sangria was the best sangria I have ever tasted! Besides that, we tried the partridge pate, prawn nest, and Brie with dried tomatoes. Everything was delicious and well plated, but the most memorable was the attentive and personable waiter, who was also an art history student and talked to us about cool art museums in Madrid. Loved everything but especially their spicy chicken, cerviche, partridge pate and smoked cod. If I could give them six stars, I would. First a table was available only for 30 minutes, than people left and we had a beautiful table in the first room only for ourselves. When we got the menu we realized. This was definitely the gastronomical highlight of our trip. Thank god we decided right away for the tasting menu. We could than enjoy every single amazing little meal they have here. I enjoyed everything that I ate here. The pâté was very rich and earthy. This was my first time eating pâté, and I thought it was very tasty. The tomato and Brie worked well, however I wished there was a bit more tomato on there. I believe this was a special for the day and my not be on the regular menu. The potatoes mojo were so good that we ordered a second. They are served in a mildly spicy, tangy, tomato sauce. I am not entirely sure what the difference is between patatas bravas and patatas con mojo. I thought this tasted similar to some of the bravas that we had previously ate (which was a favorite of ours). Of course, we ordered some ham with egg on fries (one of our favorite, simple dishes). Taberna del Chato isa very nice cheap spot for tapas! Although some of the staff doesn't speak English, a little bit of Spanish knowledge should get you through the meal. Nevertheless, the staff is extremely friendly! The place itself is a bit small: try to get a table near the storefront because the inside seating is a little cramped. Definitely try the nidos de langostinos! All of our dishes arrived promptly and their sangria is really nice! This is the second place we got tapas in Madrid and it was ok but not as good as Rosi la Loca down the block. I ordered many items that other Yelp reviewers did and was not as impressed with the flavors. The ham croquettes at Rosi were melt in your mouth delicious and these were a little mealy. Not bad tasting just kind of sticky. The prawn nest was a really cool presentation (one shrimp in a fried "nest" on a stick) but the nest was so thick I could not have told you what was underneath. The crispy chicken was ok. The ceviche, which I was not excited to try but someone ordered it, had the best flavor of all four tapas. Very light, cool and tasty. The service was very good and the price was decent. But the ham, prawn and chicken was only two pieces per order. Clean bathrooms, nice decor, ok food but wouldn't go back with the ridiculous amount of other tapas places to try. read more

It was top notch quality and presentation. Prices are very reasonable as well. After over a week in Spain, I haven't gone back to any restaurant for a second time because there is just too much great new stuff to try. My plan is to return to Taberna Del Chato though! My sister loved this place so much that she wanted to return the next day.
