Sangria & beer to get things started
    Arpita B.

The things I love about Spain: (1) amazing food & drinks (2) even better prices!! Taberna del chato continues this Spanish tradition by having great food & impressive prices. Located in a by-lane which is filled with tapas bars & restaurants, this bar stands apart with its suave, modern european appearances. We were lucky to have missed the lines which by looking at the other reviews is not uncommon at this bar. Our server spoke flawless english & easily translated the menu which is in Spanish, for us. This one does not have an English menu so brush up on some of your Spanish if you want to make sense of the menu by yourself on a busy night. We started off with sangria & beer. I loved my sangria! Delicious with serious amounts of alcohol. For food we got the ham platter( a must in Spain.... Still haven't tasted ham which wasn't good in this part of the world), shrimp nest and ham croquettes. The shrimp nest was sensational! The crispy batter with the dipping soy sauce was perfection! The icing on the cake: Free wifi!! Overall: Definitely worth giving this bar a shot when in Madrid!

    Crispy Chicken & Teriyaki Sirloin

(4.5 stars) Stumbled in here for lunch after struggling to find a place that could seat six late afternoon and so glad we did. All of the dishes we had were very solid, the prices super reasonable, the wine cheap and smooth, the service great, and the restaurant empty so it was a very peaceful meal. Not a single plate disappointed and we tried about 10 different ones. The standouts to me were the vegetables sticks, which were light and had a killer mango base, as well as the crispy chicken, which had awesome mouthfeel and came served a top great tangy sauce. But the teriyaki sirloin was definitely a close third.

Nice little place. Good was OK. Not bad but not great either. No real reason to come back.

Friendly staff who speak English, good quality tapas, but small portions which is perfect for sharing in a group of 4 close friends, like we did. We got to try out lots of varieties, see photos.

Amazing find! Great value for the quality of food and atmosphere. A few blocks from the heart of Sol, this small place was upbeat, and packed. We were lucky that one two-top just paid their bill, got up, and left. After cleaning up the table and setting the table we were promptly seated. Other folks after us were not so lucky, waiting 35-45 minutes to get seated. Having gotten a quick glimpse of their kitchen (small and tight quarters), it was amazing knowing that to see the rhythmic pace of delicious food coming out of that kitchen. We ordered a variety of tapas dishes all good but several bear mentioning - the prawns nest (deep fried prawn) was artfully done, tasted good as we gobbled it up. The mini burgers cooked were cooked medium rare and well seasoned. The crispy chicken (think chicken karaage) paired well with their sweet and sour dipping sauce with a touch spice. The steak tarare blended fairly well, a touch too much mustard that took some attention from the quality of meat and lost track of some of the other flavors. Their seafood paella - solid and generous with seafood accompanying the rice (in fact this had more seafood than the seafood paella at 7 Portes in Barcelona and that paella order was three times the size of Taberna del Chato's portion). All in all one of the better places we dined while in Madrid.

Everything was too salty except the pate (excellent), crispy chicken (great), and croquettes (good)!

The folks at Taberno del Chato were kind enough to serve us 10 minutes before the kitchen closed at midnight. They spoke fluent English and made great recommendations including the: Partridge pate: best thing we ate! Crispy chicken: moist and delicious, served with a Thai sweet chili sauce Ham croquettes: not bad I decided to also try the: Tuna tartare: too heavy on the soy sauce and lacking acidity Shrimp nest: dipping sauce was also too salty Shrimp tortillas: also too salty (I wouldn't recommend this at 8 euros) Overall the food was okay (maybe an off night). I didn't regret trying this place out but probably wouldn't return unless I wanted some pate!

Great tapas, beer tartare taste so good. If you like poutine, try the iberico, egg and fries! It's a yummy Spanish twist on poutine sans gravy. Everything is really cheap. Sangria is only 3 euro!

This isn't how it looks when it comes out but my hubby couldn't stop himself.

Yummy! Close to Plaza Mayor. I'm a vegetarian and the rest of my family eats meat. There was very little vegetarian food but they were able to whip up some salads and cheese trays for me! My husband about died for his dish of fries, eggs, and ham. Yummy! Great prices too!

    The tapas sampler for 2.
    Alain F.

My wife and I were on our 10th year anniversary, and we looked up this place on yelp. We ordered the tapas sampler for 2 so that we could get a variety of tapas dishes, and we were very satisfied with what we ate. We were not disappointed with a single one of the dishes and we especially liked the crispy chicken and birds nest tapas. The service was great, although it was our waiter's first night. Even though a couple of mistakes occurred (wrong tapas dish, and he needed to double check a few things from the menu), he was still very polite and corrected any problems that were encountered. We would definitely recommend this place to others and would go back in a heartbeat.

Found this place after scrolling through yelp reviews. Really good value for money, my husband and I had 6 plates of tapas and a couple of drinks - total 18 euros. Lovely chilled atmosphere, we arrived just in time to grab a table - best to make a reservation if you are eating during busy periods. We would recommend the pollo cujiente (crispy chicken) and the pork with onions served on bread.

    Yummmm!!!

When we left at 12:45 PM, every table was filled with a few patrons waiting to sit/stand. When you get in, have some people grab a seat while one person goes to the front to order. Their tortillas are sold by the piece, which is one sixth of a giant circular frittata. They also sell croquettes in pairs and there's a discount for getting 8. Most patrons got the original, which is egg + potato. We tried the Brie, which was a crowd pleaser. Cheesy and eggy, with bites of cooked potato for texture. Also, got a goat cheese + caramelized onion one that was more goat cheese than onion. Would sub this one out if I come back. Got 4 jamon and 4 carrilerra (cheeks) croquettes. I thought they were medium sized based on the other Madrid croquettes we had. All croquettes we had on this trip were great, and these were certainly on par. I can see why Pez Tortilla is so popular with many locations. It's a hearty meal at a very affordable price.

You can tell by looking around, the place was emptyish while the tapas places nearby and across the street were full. We actually went inside the restaurant across this place, it was touristy and extremely expensive, we thought, this is not the experience we wanted. We left and entered the Sidreria. Here goes nothing... Here is the lowdown: it is CHEAP, LARGE PORTION sizes, DELICIOUS, super FRIENDLY (bar tender did Everything and was really nice to us. It helped that I speak spanish though) and were you get FREE TAPAS with your drink. Tell me when was the last time you got free tapas in a touristy bar? We ordered a Tinto de Verano (red wine, lemon soda and splash of vermouth) and it was great, cost about 2 euros or so! the only beer though, was San Miguel, but it tastes much better from tap than bottle, we repeated our orders shortly after downing the first batch. The free tapa came as a surprise, we had ordered several (including fried calamari already, and a tortilla) portions again, were cheap and huge. We were full then. At the next round of drinks, another free tapa came. I was surprised again and as a sign of respect, we ate it all again. No comments. A plate of peanuts and soft bread topped with a mayo/potato/fake crab meat. It looked so simple but it was so good! That's when they got me. Simple-delicious (like the tomato on bread and Olive oil) that's it. I was sold and happy we decidedly to enter.

I'm always amazed that such a gem exists in the heart of Madrid, a city center filled with tourist traps. Malaespina draws both locals and tourists -- and for good reason. The food quality to price ratio is unbeatable. On our most recent visit, we had huevos estrellados, tortilla tapas, sangria, and espressos, and spent about $20 for the two of us.
