Anticappointment: Nytorget 6's unevenly reheated Swedish meatballs.
    Curtis S.

Nytorget 6 served me a poorly heated serving of Swedish meatballs. What should have been an amazing sendup of what's regarded to be a national dish was the epitome of anticappointment. Some parts of the meatballs were warm. Other parts were cold. Most of it was lukewarm. I suspect it was microwaved. I didn't want to be the ugly American and complain - despite fellow Swedish diners who saw I wasn't happy and urged me to say something. But I was starved. So I finished them. But the Swedes persisted, saying they were embarrassed that a restaurant as good as Nytorget 6 would serve a mediocre product. I finally spoke out. The waitress apologized, saying she wished I spoke up. I told her I didn't want to fan any prevailing anti-American attitudes. She said that was nonsense and offered me a new round. I told her I couldn't: I'm trying stay slim and the meatballs were supposed to be a cheat treat. She came back and gave me the bill. Granted, I thought the chef should have come out with a mea culpa and offered me a chance to try again, but that's just me.

Nytorget 6 is located in the trendy district with the same name. I visited this bistro for a Sunday lunch with two of my beloved friends. We sought after a rather tranquil place where one could have a couple of beers, chat and enjoy good food. In retrospect, we were pleased with our choice. The decor of this place is smart and elegant and the service was led by smiles and diligent attention during our visit. Besides, instantly when stepping inside the door I recognized that this restaurant had the same warm vibe as Nybrogatan 38 - which is one of my favorite places in town. This is not strange though as they are operated by the same owners. Only by looking at the menu or the lovely breadbasket one can see this. Their affordable menu is extensive which makes it slightly problematic to choose what to order, especially for me that want everything. Some of the dishes are classics while others are following current culinary trends. Additionally, they have left space for a few exciting and unusual dishes such as smoked reindeer heart, deep fried rooster wings or the almost-forgotten blood pudding. This menu is undeniably a trigger for me in order to return.

    Iberico & chicken!

In short; good food for value, depending on dish. I had the Iberico Secreto. I really liked the kimchi sauce and the flavor of the meat - it gave me some flashbacks to my Japan trip last fall. Good mix of sweetness and grill. The yoghurt was alright but I enjoyed the dish without it (another of my friends liked it another though). I also tried the 'Grillad fransk gårdskyckling' unfortunately it didn't taste so much. The blood pudding (Lantlig blodpudding) is a good alternative for someone wanting to try out traditional swedish food. A friend had the egg benedict - said it was good but a bit too expensive for a few eggs. On my first visit I had the Tuna burger which is also worth a try. Enjoy!

Nytorget 6 in Södermalm is a modern restaurant with great service, a good wine list and excellent, interesting dishes. Staying in Söder for two days, it seemed like a good idea to head to a local restaurant for dinner. Nytorget 6 seemed like a good option to me. The place looks modern, yet also somewhat classy, it somehow has its own character. The background music was an entertaining selection of nineties hits with songs like All Star by Smash Mouth, bringing back fun memories from school. Nytorget 6 was pretty busy on that evening and I was lucky to get a place without a booking or a long wait. The wine list was kind of impressive, I especially liked the white wines on the menu. I would say, it would be worth going back just for a nice glass of wine alone. My meal started with various mini bread loaves and tasty butter. One bread was a bit spicy, another one was with cumin or so and then there was a hard, thin flat bread. Following the bread, I had deep fried feta cheese with lemon and mint. A great combination of flavours, looking beautiful and tasting refreshing. As you do when visiting Sweden, my first dinner in Stockholm had to be meatballs. As far as meatballs go, this was quite a fancy dish, if you ask me. Having olive oil and balsamic vinegar in the centre of the mashed potatoes was a funny idea, and surprisingly, it worked for me. Of course, the meatballs came complete with delicious lingonberries and a nice cream sauce. The meatballs themselves were also a bit different, as the meat was mixed with various herbs, probably wild garlic or something similar. It was a very tasty plate of food. And as much as I like IKEA meatballs, what Nytorget 6 put together was on a whole different level of deliciousness. After the pretty heavy main, I looked for a light dessert and the Swedish cheese cake sounded good. The flavour was very nice and the raspberry added much needed colour and sharpness, but I did not really like the rice pudding-like texture. After three courses, I left Nytorget 6 full and satisfied. The place has a great, vibrant atmosphere, staff are relaxed and friendly, and the food is top-notch.

This has been one of my all time favorite meals. We had originally wanted to go to sister restaurant, Meatballs for the People, but they were on vacation until August 2. Luckily, Nytorget 6 had the meatballs we had been so eagerly wanting to try. After a mishap with street names, we found ourselves at the restaurant (it's actually pretty easy: Nytorgsgatan turns into Nytorget). We walked in and the place was full of locals and charm. The complimentary brown bread was dense, slightly sweet and absolutely delectable. The flatbread was pretty great too. After walking for miles on end, we devoured the first basket and asked for another round. So good! We also ordered the chili cheese, which were these sizable gooey balls of cheese with a wee bit of a kick. The meatballs with mashed potatoes and gravy- holy shnikes were amazing! I kept the lingonberry sauce to just nosh on throughout the meal. Also got the kimchi pork bao which was alright- definitely the least impressive out of the showstoppers. The entrecôte steak was phenomenal and came with haricots verts, roasted tomato and fries with aioli- mouthwatering perfection. The meat was juicy and neither under cooked, nor overcooked. Lagom. Check this place out for traditional Swedish and overall delicious food, you'll be very happy you did.

    Brunch burger

The burger and fries were good! Interior decor was cosy and intimate. The wait staff service was great at brunch. I think I will make a dinner reservation to try this place out again. I would have given this place another star if it wasn't for two things. #1- The brunch menu needs a lot of improvement and #2 - when I tried to come here as a walk-in for dinner all the waitstaff totally ignored me for a good ten minutes--while I actively tried to get their attention! When I came for the weekend menu it was an entirely different experience. It was calm and the employees were service minded. Highly enjoyable! However, I did have a problem with the menu. Luckily, they made me a burger that wasn't on the printed menu (but for some strange reason it is on their website?) Even though didn't really feel like eating a burger for breakfast, it turned out to be a pretty good decision! Their brunch menu is really more like an lunch/evening french style bistro menu (combined with a tapas menu) than an actual brunch. It doesn't exactly say it's "brunch" on the menu, but it's totally implied (any menu offering from 10:00am to 4:00pm on the weekend...is a brunch menu.) The mixture between breakfast and lunch on it though was hardly evident. There were a little bit of eggs present in their french-style omelets and I did like that they had some salads, but plankstek, falafel, entrecôte, meatballs, tuna burgers, linguini with foie gras, calf-tartar and blood pudding? I'm not sure I will be eating any of that stuff for the first meal of the day any time soon. The most interesting sounding part of the menu was the overpriced tapas style items. Unfortunately, I was also told by a reliable source that they were not worth it so I didn't get any. But, seriously... falafel? Tapas tacos? What do those have to do with a French-Swedish bistro brunch? I understand that translating the American creation of Brunch at a french-swedish restaurant will change up the menu quite a bit... but I still expect to be able to come and have some french-swedish style breakfast items. Brunch was created so that people could eat breakfast at a later time in the day or lunch (or both!). I am one of those people who did not eat anything until 12:00pm on a Saturday and was expecting breakfast food. Where were the yogurt parfaits? Poached eggs? The homemade jam and brioche? Croissant? Pain au chocolat? Choux? I would even go for... Crepes? Soufflé? But... NON! Nowhere to be seen. Their weekday breakfast menu looks way more amazing and exactly like what I was looking for! Why couldn't we get even a third of that on the weekend?! I gave this place three stars because the burger was good and I keep thinking that i'm just getting unlucky with this place. Everyone else seems to love it. I would recommend that you try out the regular weekday breakfast or the weekday dinner menus--both sound fantastic. And, definitely reserve a table! =)

    Flank steak

This place is busy! We came here without a reservation and so were told the bar is first come first serve. We found seats after 20 mins by the bar and sat down but were not attended to for another 15mins. Finally our server arrived to take our drink orders and debrief the menu. When we asked for some recommendations, he simply said you can't go wrong with any of the items on the menu. Either he genuinely loved every item on the menu or he just didn't really care to explain each of the items to us. So we order a couple of appies and the flank steak on plank wood. The appies were alright but I find the steak to be a bit salty for my liking. I didn't think there was anything special about this resto.

The dark bread was my favorite

The food and service was great. Weekday lunch is cheap for a restaurant of this class. It comes with bread (yummy!)

As I am a tourist, I got that crazy milkshake with a cinnamon bun on top of it just for good measure of course. The cinnamon buns in Sweden are obviously exceptional as they originated from there- crunchy on the outside and warm, melted, soft cinnamon goodness on the inside. The waffles are delicious as well, regardless of which waffle you get. All in all, this is a great place to go to if you're visiting Stockholm!

I'm not sure what Swedish waffles and 1950s diners have in common, but this place makes it work for sure. We came in on a Sunday morning, and were able to get seated right away. My cousin and I both had the raspberry waffle with whipped cream (75 sek, approx $8USD.). The waffle was perfectly crispy and the jam was delicious, but it wasn't a particularly filling for the price, really just a treat. They had fancier offerings as well, for a bit more money, as well as savory combinations. I overheard from a neighboring table that you can order a waffle with both whipped cream and ice cream. Where was this information when I was ordering? Oh well, next time. I would visit Älskade Traditioner again, but perhaps only for dessert. Alternatively I may try one of their savory options for a full meal.
