    Lunch

We stopped in here after visiting the Royal Palace and had a lovely meal. It was a bit chaotic when entering, and it seems like it can get busy. We had a sandwich and a couple of delicious desserts along with a fresh juice. The food was really good, and I definitely recommend.

Wandering around Gamla Stan, I wanted to make sure my first visit to Stockholm included a semla, that traditional Fat Tuesday pastry they eat there and tourists like me want all the time. Doing a little research led me to Schweizerkonditoriet. It was 3 in the afternoon on a weekday but the place was packed! Counter help was top notch and friendly. We got two "honey ginger mint lemon" teas which were FULL of fresh ingredients as listed...fresh local honey, fresh sliced ginger, mint leaves, and a wedge of lemon. Did I mention fresh? On a chilly day, it was very satisfying. We didn't stop there! A few sandwiches and a princess cake and we were stuffed. It was hard to choose when there were SO many good looking things to eat here. We can't wait to go back!

We went here for some pastries and coffee and were kind of disappointed. For one, they have a QR code you scan to see the menu and when we went to order the barista informed us that the menu is not recent and they don't have a lot of things we were trying to order. They did not have an alternative menu to look at either. The cappuccino was too strong which is normally not a problem for me because I like strong coffee but it tasted almost burnt. My girlfriend is a barista and she noticed that their milk frother machine is very dirty which can lead to food sickness. It sounds cool but I'd go somewhere else.

Located not far from Stockholm's Royal Palace and perhaps best known for allowing guests to scrawl all over the walls it was on Saturday morning that a visit was paid to Cafe Schweizer, the space called Schweizerkonditoriet by locals serving an admirable but narrow Breakfast Menu in addition to Coffee, Tea and Pastries. Open from 7am till past 20h00 daily, a rarity in socialist Scandinavia where limited work hours in favor of quality of life see many Bageris and Konditoris close early rather than hire a second shift, it was after a pleasant walk in Gamla Stan's rarely-tourist-free streets that Västerlångg 9 was located in a small alley, the server with just one other patron quickly offering greetings in addition to suggestions in fluent English. Not particularly looking for Eggs or Sandwiches during a day with substantial dining plans including Frantzen, the Café established in 1920 instead experienced by way of four Pastries including still-warm Cinnamon Rolls moist with Butter inside a golden coil, it was with Pearl Sugar crackling to the tooth that the dish was gone in minutes, the follow-up Tosca also faring well with a moist and toothsome crumb and plenty of candied slices of Almond. Moving next to an item suggested by the clerk, a buttery Tart Shell filled with chilled Cream, glazed Strawberries and Meringue that would have likely been better given time to warm, it was in conclusion that the first Chokladboll was experienced with over a dozen to follow, the Oats in this one a bit more prominent than in others, thus cutting down on the sweetness and yielding a flavor more hearty and appealing than many.

One of my favorite places on my ten day trip to Scandinavia. This is a cafe in Gamla Stan, easily spotted because they have a ton of bright oranges in both their windows. They serve up some amazing sandwiches, full of flavor, great portion size, and served with a slice of watermelon (how cool is that!). And once you're done with lunch, they have a tantalizing array of desserts to entice you. Honestly I'd make a beeline for this place if I was visiting Stockholm again.

I think I left a little piece of my heart here when I visited Stockholm during the summer. We stumbled across this place whilst exploring Stockholm's beautiful old town. It's very close to the Royal Palace so it's in a very busy part of town but the minute we walked through the door it was like a little oasis of calm. The staff here are lovely, very warm and welcoming. They have a great selection of cakes but as we had just eaten I opted for the hot chocolate. I couldn't say it was the most delicious hot chocolate I've ever had but it came served in a perfectly chipped bowl with some cocoa powder, cream and a little meringue on top. After a day of walking around exploring this was just like a big chocolate hug, with the arty, graffiti-filled walls just adding to the experience. If you're looking to get out of the crowds for a while I would highly recommend this place!

We found this café while walking around Gamla stan. It's decor is so cute, the staff are happy, great service and delicious breakfast menu and the portions are huge! Definitely coming back to this place

Cute little Cafe in gamla stan with a coffe bar and absolutely delicious looking sandwhiches and pastries. As we got there early in the morning, we just had coffee. But other patrons seemed to really enjoy their food.

Every year on easter, I would eat Smörgåstårta, homemade or at a restaurant. This is one of the many Swedish dishes I missed when I moved to the California for college. Therefore, I felt delighted eating their Smörgåstårta. It was delicious, spongy and it came in big portion. Their hot chocolate was very tasty too. I will definitely come back.

A cool quote someone left on the wall.

The salmon pie here was amazing. I was very impressed with how quickly we were served. The line just keeps going and going to get into this place, but it definitely was worth it for lunch. We also tried the quiche Lorraine which was very tasty. Their cheesecake is lighter and fluffier than an American cheesecake, and they're fresh squeezed orange juice it's very tasty.

    Salmon cake sandwiches.

Family owned - beautiful little cafe with wonderful food. Mint, lemon, orange tea with honey - delicious.

Crowded. Touristy. Rude staff. Mediocre food. Don't bother. Had much better food elsewhere outside Gamla Stan.

Located on a largely residential street not far from the Metro Station and open seven-to-seven on Weekdays with slightly shorter hours on weekends, at least one Baker still present approaching 16h00 and presumably working on items for the next day, it was after browsing still-full shelves that six items were selected, the Café upstairs offering a pleasant place to dine as the majority of patrons filled seats outside. Using slightly different nomenclature than other Konditori around Stockholm, the Wienerbrod for instance dubbed Vaniljbulle thanks to the flavor of thick Custard inside its fluffy golden coils, it was with Princess Cake dressed pretty in Pink that one of the city's best slices was found, at least five separate layers including Cream and Raspberry Compote contributing to Pound Cake that was more buttery than others but still surprisingly light. Not about to pass on the classic Fika focused on throughout nine days in Sweden, Åsö's Cardamom Bun more leavened than others and thus open beneath the sugared top with a nice stretch to the Dough, it was with a dual layer of the same Raspberry Jam tasted earlier that a Katalan Tart shined while the Tosca also performed admirably, the now-predictable Chokladbol in this instance occurring by way of a "Lillebror" that replaced with Pearl Sugar around the Chocolate and Oat core.

Where they make their mark is in execution. Let's start with the drip coffee. You know how in "Pulp Fiction" and "Twin Peaks" a running gag is Coffee that is so good, everyone stops everything they are doing to comment on how good the coffee is? Aso's drip coffee could be that amazing stop-everything coffee. My only regret is that I did not have Kyle MacLachlan or Harvey Keitel with me to enjoy a cup. * * * Lunch was Raksmorgas, a standard Swedish dish of shrimp, fresh dill, lemon, tomatoes and homemade mayonnaise on thinly sliced rye bread. Aso's adds a hard-boiled egg to the proceedings. What was so good about this? Just about everything. The shrimp were small but packed with flavor. Imagine the flavor intensity of a salami, but in small cold shrimp. Fresh dill is always wonderful. Fresh dill can make cardboard taste good. The hard boiled eggs were perfectly timed. Bright golden moist-crumbly yellow yolks. Most restaurants give you over-boiled rubbery yellow-green yolks. Net of cooking time, the eggs themselves were a lot better than the old commercial refrigerator eggs we get in the United States. I suspect these were fresh eggs. The decadent treat was the rye bread on the bottom. This covered with homemade mayonnaise. The difference between homemade mayonnaise and jar mayonnaise is like the difference between a real kiss and a picture of a kiss. The mayonnaise drips into the rye bread. So do the flavor leavings of the shrimp and the egg and the tomato. The result? Bread to die for. Sopping up the good stuff from your meal with bread is always good. Sopping up the good stuff from your meal with superior Swedish rye bread is over the top excellent. * * * How is the bakery as a bakery? Love of the life got a walnut bread with her salad that was first rate. It was stick to your ribs stuff. One roll's worth of walnut bread and you were fed for a week. And totally walnutted to boot. On the dessert side, they do have decadent blow-all-the-calories desserts. But many Swedish pastries are in the same family with English scones. These are meant to be a snack by themselves. Substantial. Restrained. Subtle but worthwhile flavor. I had a Katalan which is two thin layers of lingonberry filling between three layers of substantial pie crust. Katalan means "from Catalonia" and naturally there is nothing more Spanish than lingonberries. (Cough cough). Not a good dessert choice after a heavy meal, but it would have been perfect with coffee at four in the afternoon. * * * Overall, an absolutely fine establishment. And even better if your world stops spinning for good coffee.

I liked both of them a lot but decided to go with the lavender one since it was a bit more unique. They also had Semlas in the store and oddly enough that day was "Fat Tuesday" which meant that it was a "national Semla" day. I had been using only my credit card in Stockholm, but when I got in to StikkiNikki, I was bummed to find out this place was cash only. The lady was extra nice, and accepted my Euros and gave me SEK back. I had the mocha flavored ice cream in waffle cone, and the single scoop serving was very generous. The waffle cone was crunchy and tasty, but the ice cream just tasted icy and watery as the flavor wasn't infused. Later as I was strolling through the city, I stumbled upon another StikkiNikki that had different flavors, such as Tin Roof (peanut and fudge swirl in vanilla - I was super excited for the crunchy texture!) and salted caramel. I tried those samples and again it was very watery and the flavor wasn't infused. If this were the United States these would be baller flavors... Side note, why do Scandinavians like their licorice so much?! There was a salted licorice flavor, and all over the grocery stores, there are licorice candies. I remember when I went to Iceland there was licorice everywhere as well.
