    Margarita and michelada

Nuevo Vallarta Mexican restaurant is an amazing restaurant, from the moment we walk in the door until we left. The food was out of this world. Everything is made in house from their homemade tortillas corn and flour, to their margarita mix. The menu is large. My favorite part of their menu is the pictures! I love seeing the food along with the description. There's a lot of yummy dishes to pick from. I've never seen a burrito as large as the one my husband ordered, it was hug!! I got the enchiladas and taco, it had best flavor. The spices and sauce was amazing. The cocktails were great too. The service was the best, Coco was our waitress, and she never missed a beat. I can't wait to bring family and friends back to Nuevo Vallarta for some more yummy food and cocktails. This is the best Mexican restaurant in Northern Nevada, hands down.

    Chips and salsa

We were in the area visiting family and went here for dinner. We were seated right away and brought chips and salsa. The salsa was chunkier than we liked and the chips were a little more done than we liked so not starting off great. Our server was friendly and was able to answer all the questions at our table. We ordered a shrimp burrito, chicken and steak fajitas, chicken mole and skirt steak with enchilada plate. The food overall was a little salty and although the plates were quite large, I didn't feel like I got my money's worth, it was mostly sauce, rice and beans. The food was good overall with a fresh ingredient flavor. We also ordered a glass of Chardonnay which was good and a margarita that tasted like a pre mix vs freshly made. Based on the other restaurants and the cost, we probably won't be coming back.

I believe this was their Ultimate Burrito with shredded beef.

My husband and I went on a date night. Normally, we are all about trying new restaurants especially Mexican but this was our first time here since they opened probably a year ago. Our area has 5 Mexican Restaurants. Yelp reviews were mostly positive with a few exceptions. As we parked we could see it was a slow night for them as the parking lot had a couple of cars. It had been a rainy, windy day so most probably decided to say indoors. This place was a converted McDonald's. They did a nice job on the remodel. They had a mixtures on tables and booths. As we entered we were greeted very friendly asking if we preferred a booth. We said yes. It was only the 2 of us but this booth could hold a comfortable 4 without it being a tight fit like some places where you feel like a sardine. A lady immediately brought chips and salsa. Chip were good, salsa was okay. It needed a bit more spices. The menu was very long with a ton of options. We were asked within a couple of minutes for our drink order and were brought drinks within a few minutes. Prices were average to higher than we have seem but not too outrageous. We ordered a burrito with shredded beef and the carne asada burrito. We got our food within 10 minutes. The burritos were big. If not too hungry, you could split it with someone. Mine had red sauce and my husband the green sauce. My husband had asked for black beans but pinto were used. He was okay with either. My burrito was good but I wish the red sauce was a bit more flavorful. It looked like the same red sauce used for the chips and salsa. I wish there was a bit more cheese inside as well. There was a good about of the shredded beef. My husband really enjoyed his burrito. Maybe these were not the best we ever had but still really good. My margarita was very good with plenty of alcohol. Throughout our meal we did have a gentleman come over asking how everything was. Maybe the manager or owner? Appreciated it. All in all I would recommend this place to try. Mexican food can be so different and depending on their style,, you might love it or not. I would come back and try something else on the menu.

5/18/2024- Decided to venture out from a few of our favorite Mexican restaurants-and stopped here. Location is nice, and off the Main Street.. Seated as soon as we walked in, but requested another table.. the table was unbalanced .. Menu has a lot of items- on the front of the menu, in red -states the charge of 3%for atm / credit card.. I went with the fish tacos- server said the description was wrong and the fish is fried-.. Exactly what I wanted - thinking fried meant battered fish- but it was not battered. Sadly the presentation of the fish tacos was so plain- no coleslaw, or garnishes.. But the sauce was amazing and made up for the looks.. Was not offered a choice of beans- but honestly the black beans were really good with rice- Also got the taco and enchilada combo- and it was good.. refried beans were very good.. Attentive staff .. $53 plus the 3% = $55 bill. Glad to have stopped in..

    Excellent Table side Guacamole

From the moment we stepped in the restaurant we were made to feel right at home with everyone from the hostess to the guy who made our table side guacamole and our wonderful and personable server, Saul from Bacalar, Mexico. Saul took excellent care of our table and made some pretty amazing margaritas! The Chile con Queso was amazing as was the table side guacamole. When our dinners arrived, we immediately realized we'd be leaving with a lot of leftovers as the portions were huge! We had such a great first experience here, I'm sure we'll be back! We're also excited to come back and see some live bands from northern Mexico that will be performing late October. Their menu is extensive and has so many great looking dishes offered it was really hard to pick which one to try first. We hope you enjoy!

    Asada Y mas

We LOVE this restaurant. We visit WEEKLY & the staff are so nice, they treat us like family. We each get the Asada Y Mas, skirt steak with an enchilada and rice beans/tortillas. Portions are generous and I'm pretty sure they shred their own cheese, it's bomb. My husband gets their margaritas and they taste fresh, not artificial. They also have dos xx amber on tap, so good! See ya next week

Wow, what a surprise. In a town with a plethora of Mexican restaurants you'd think there isn't room for another one, but you would be wrong. This was our first visit, and we enjoyed ourselves so much that we were thinking about our next visit already We started with the chips. They were served warm with two apparently house made salsas, the green one spicier than the red. We ended up enjoying two baskets and two servings of each salsa. I had the cheese enchilada and burrito plate and my wife had the chicken mole plate. The mole was the best I remember tasting and, as usual, I'll get to enjoy it tomorrow for lunch. We were full and so we ordered a flan to go to share later. The service was spot on. Our water glasses were never empty and our chip basket was replenished without us needing to ask. They have, what looks like, a fairly comprehensive tequila selection and so if you're into that I'd bet they have you covered. All in all, pleasant food, great service and a recycled building (in case you're visiting this was the original McDonald'a in town), convene to add another great Mexican food option to the Carson Valley.

    Taco de al pastor

We walked in and it was empty and it scared us a bit but we got greeted very nicely by all the staff there. They started us off with fresh chips and really good flavorful salsas It was really hot out and when we walked in we got so relieved the ac was on. PERFECT! I got the plato chico ( 1 chicken enchilada and 1 al pastor taco with rice and and refried beans) My bf got the California asada burrito. IT WAS HUGE! Absolutely worth the serving and price. All really sweet people.

Carne asada street tacos and pomegranate margarita

Amazing service and good with live music. Nice atmosphere. Big portion of food for a great price! Great place to come with family.

We have been waiting to try this place for more the a year. It was a remodel of the old McDonald's. The remodel took about a year and a half. That is what is felt like getting our lunch this afternoon. The place was not that busy and they had a lot of employees. The food was ok. The beans were very salty. My wife's chicken fajitas were served not sizzling. Who has non sizzling fajitas? This place better step up because it does not compare to La Hacienda Del Sazon or Francisco's. They have a weird sign posted in the restroom and at the entrance. (See pics)

Food was prepared with care & was exceptional. A pleasurable experience of satisfying my cravings. Very nice Marg too! The service was good too, attentively checking on me, and still not pestering me as I enjoyed the warm & inviting ambiance. Delightful experience, thank you all for your service!

    Side chile relleno

Super disappointed . We got our first to go order from here and man it was all messed up. When I called I explained to the guy I would like a chile Colorado burrito with shrimp instead of chicken and he said I couldn't do that. He said I could do the Vallarta burrito with just shrimp. I told him that says it has chicken and crab and I don't want chicken or crab. He said they could do it with all shrimp. I said that would work. I then requested instead of the mushroom sauce to get red enchilada sauce on top which he said was fine. He repeated my order back which was two of these burritos and said shrimp Only and green enchilada sauce. I corrected him that I wanted the red enchilada sauce. Well we picked up our order about 10pm. When we got home the burritos were FULL of mostly shredded CHICKEN, a small amount of crab and a small amount of shrimp with GREEN sauce on top. Normally the green sauce wouldn't have been a big deal but we don't eat chicken so here we are with $45 worth of two burritos that we can't eat. It's 10:30 the place is closed. Rice, beans, and chips are good though. I picked out the shrimp - it had good flavor. This place has good flavors but they definitely don't pay attention to detail which is disappointing. Their hours are so convenient for those of us that dont have traditional eating schedules.

Mole Poblano , With Black Beans, White Rice, And Fried Plantains.

If you haven't been to Nuevo Vallarta, I highly recommend it! Huge portions, and the food is full of flavor. Very authentic Mexican food. Also the staff makes you feel right at home. I got the Mole Poblano with black beans, white rice, and fried plantains. My boyfriend got " Arroz con Pollo" . 10/10

The other night we ate in courses we started with sharing the brussels sprouts then we each had a cup of the stew, and we concluded by sharing a hamburger. Well, I got 75% of the hamburger. We ate in the bar again on that night and so we were able to have interaction with the ownership team. Nice people who stayed engaged with us while they were doing side work. Oh, and I can't forget the cocktails. My wife and I feel like Norm from cheers as the owner knows what we like and makes it very well. So, I don't think you can really go wrong when you add up the environment, the food and the pleasant personalities.

Since it was so close to opening, and to take advantage of their kids-eat-free promo, we decided to try again. Let's start with the positives: that bar is hopping. Their happy hour menu looks and sounds good, and we got drinks served to our table from the bar, and they were tasty. All started off well. I ordered the pasta with blackened chicken and added shrimp, my husband had the ribeye, and our kids had the cheese pizza and butter noodles respectively. The kids' food came out first. The flatbread pizza was what you'd expect, which is fine for a kid's menu. Nothing to write home about, but it does the trick. The butter noodles were actually very tasty! I snuck a bite while making sure it was cool enough for my youngest. My pasta, however, was not great. The chicken was not blackened--it was barely seasoned. And it was obviously some pre-cooked slices of frozen chicken. The little chunks seemed to be commercially-prepared, compressed chicken breast The taste was so off-putting, I stopped eating the chicken altogether. The shrimp, which is an add-on or substitution option, was cooked well and had good flavor. The vegetables were some frozen diced mix that were soggy and lifeless. The sauce itself was just ok. No depth of flavor and needed more salt and pepper. I would not be surprised if the sauce, chicken, and veggies were some pre-made, frozen mixture they received from their supplier, to which they added the pasta, shrimp, and some diced tomatoes. I stopped eating my meal and ate my youngest's unfinished pasta instead. It comes with no salad or bread and a hearty price tag. I definitely do not recommend. My husband's steak was cooked to the ordered temperature (mid-rare), and they did have blue cheese crumbles, which he always adds. The cut was of low quality, however, so the overall experience was subpar. Broccolini was cooked well but under seasoned. Mashed potatoes were fine. We won't be back, unless it's a date night happy hour bar situation.

We knew it wasn't going to be crowded and the food will be fresh, but it was so much more than that. Overland is lucky to employ Tennessee, who might just be the best server in the Carson Valley. I grant you that we haven't been to every restaurant and we haven't had every server and so it could be hyperbole to try to tell you that he's the best, but we need to be sure to let you know that he is clearly in the top percentile of quality, local servers. Why you ask. He anticipated our every need, and so we always had water, always had coffee, and he cleared every single time he got near the table. His positive energy is infectious. Yes, I can hear you now, what about the food? My wife can, on occasion, high maintenance, and this was one of those mornings. She ordered the Eggs Benedict without the bottom bread plus one more whole extra Eggs Benedict, and Tennessee didn't flinch. I ordered the vegetarian omelette and I had side breakfast potatoes. All of it tasted great. I even tried the hollandaise sauce on my wife's eggs Benedict and it tasted fresh and tasty. So, I say give Tennessee a raise, and when you go to the Overland, hope that you get seated in his section because it will be an experience that you won't forget soon, and the food is very good. And we brought some Bay Area friends with us. We also came in mid-week to avoid any crowd potential. Our evening began at the bar with a round of Picon Punch, the official drink of the State of Nevada. I first thought that this was a drink that you only ordered once, but this small glass of goodness actually grew on us. After closing the bar bill and looking at all the branded merchandise, it was off to the main dining room. We chose the Basque Family Style side of the menu, which at the end of the evening resulted in number of take home containers. Our 4 choices were Basque Chicken, Fish, Lamb Shoulder, and Lamb Chops. Those came with Vegetable Soup, Salad, Beef Stew, Beans, French Fries, Bottle of Red Wine, Coffee, and Ice Cream. for the Table. These inclusive choices were priced just south of $40 and that's what the bill was at the end of the evening, as there were no extras needed. OK, the included wine was a little on the sweet side, but we didn't see the need to "upgrade" as we were too busy concentrating on the food. It was all good, especially the Soup and the French Fries. The only regret was not being here on the night they served Huckleberry Ice Cream, but our Vanilla or Pistachio Almond was good enough. JT Basque is family generation owned, and we certainly felt welcome and well taken care of. The rustic decor was also cool, as was the happy energy in the dining room. Why is this THE ONE when it comes to Basque dining? Well... It's steeped in history in a way you can feel from the moment you step onto the wooden sidewalk out front. You'll see it on the walls, hear it in the conversations, and taste it in the food. This is simply a special place. You'll feel truly at home, and that's because the same family has operated it for countless generations, passing down legendary hospitality like a family heirloom. From friendly greetings in the "lobby" to the homey vibes and warm servers, you'll love every moment. Doesn't hurt that the food is delicious and plentiful. Everything is made from scratch with a lot of love, and each dish is huge and hearty. Lamb chops and lamb shoulder steaks are always A+ but be sure to order the desired temp because they don't always ask. Steaks are solid too. Same tip as above. And for all three, don't forget to get them smothered in whole cloves of roasted garlic. Personally I usually can't say no to sweetbreads at a Basque spot, and that's the case here as well. They're served in a rich, garlicky and well seasoned gravy, studded with red and green peppers and whole cloves of garlic. It's the perfect dish to use up the extra bread because you won't want to leave a drop. Make sure you bring a couple bucks to leave up on the ceiling! The bartenders can show you how to make em stick. And of course, have a picon punch!

You walk in (by the way, look like a regular, and PUSH the very low doorknob, not pull like I did initially) and immediately know it is dripping with history, divey-ness, and awesomeness. The crowd comes in waves, as it is a popular drop-in for people coming through town as well as many very welcoming and friendly locals. Actually, I want to say again how awesome the regulars were. Not sure how I would feel if constant tourist dropped in my homestead, but everyone we talked to who was local was awesome and inviting. The bar had an IPA for me. They have a pool table. Once we realized that South Tahoe was irritatingly tourist overpopulated at this time of year, we decided to attend this cool candle-lighting tradition they did on NYE there instead of figuring out logistics over the pass. The event was SOOOO cool, and they even had a fun band later that night that they somehow packed into the jukebox corner. Hope I don't forget anyone. Whether you get Syd, Gabby, Candi, Dee, Carrie, or Ginger (the only one I didn't meet personally), you will love your experience here. They were all rock stars during our visits. I can't say enough good things about this bar, it really made "our South Tahoe trip," and you should swing by if in the area. I highly recommend this place, and see you there (the next time we are in the area)...

I mean honestly the last thing you want to see at a sushi restaurant is a fish tank that is filled with green algae where you can barely see the fish inside and only half full as if it hasn't been cleaned, tended to, or refilled with water in months? years? That being said, when the sushi came out it was better looking than the vibe I got with the atmosphere. They did a sushi boat which was kind of cool for presentation. However, 3 rolls ended up being over $50+ which is insanely expensive with no all-you can eat option which is what our town is known for - A New York Times piece just did an article about it. :) With the current state of operations, I don't see how this business is going to be sustainable unless some changes are made.

The appetizer was disappointing. When you think of seared tuna, you think of a flame lightly browning the top. This was overcooked and not seared. The cucumber was also overwhelming. A ponzu sauce and thin sliced jalapeño would have been a game changer with this dish. The fire role was delightful. Rice was a bit spongy but overall tasted well. The Ichiban roll, was dry. It needs a kick. Ponzu or some citrus sauce could have changed how this tasted. The server surprised me with mochi for my birthday which was very kind and delicious. Overall, this place isn't bad. These aren't Southern California rolls. They lack the effect of ponzu, spicy mayo, and thinly sliced limes and jalapeños on their rolls. And those key things make a difference. The food was still fresh and good. I would come back.

I checked this place out in the afternoon before deciding to go to dinner there. It looked pretty casual in the menu look like something everybody would enjoy. When we got there, we were greeted nicely and our server, JC, was very nice. All of the food was bountiful. We ordered the appetizer with three different items which was pretty good. It was onion rings, fried zucchini, and fried mozzarella sticks. The zucchini was a little undercooked. On to the main courses. It took longer than we would think and they brought it out in pieces. The two men got theirs first and my daughter and I got hers a few minutes later and Grandma was served last. Grandpa ordered a steak sandwich and he said it was good. My husband ordered a Philly cheese steak, which she said was decent. Grandma ordered fish and chips and she said it was so so. The french fries were thick steak type that were really good. A couple of us tried them. My daughter and I were excited when we saw the lobster tacos and we ordered them. The chips that came with them were salty beyond belief! We could not even eat them. When I told JC, she said there's nothing they could do about the chips and she offered to take the salad off the bill which I thought was nice. Both of my daughter and I could not eat the chips. The lobster tacos were not good. If the corn tortillas were warmed or cooked, it must've been very, very little. The lobster was chopped up in a wait and mixed with some kind of sauce that we can barely taste the lobster. We got two tacos and barely ate one. We took them home, but it didn't seem worth it to try to mend this. The best thing I can say is that the people they were very welcoming and pleasant. Also, JC gave my father-in-law a lemon bar for his birthday as we walked out. That was really sweet. Lastly, make sure you bring cash because you have to pay extra for using a card. We have to pay over $6 extra because we used a card. Am I understanding is that is happening a lot in restaurants. So, I don't think this is unusual.
