You can really taste the difference because they use actual fresh vegetables instead of canned ingredients, and you can even see the food being cooked right in front of you. The birria and quesabirrias are absolutely delicious--very flavorful without being overly salty. I also loved the combination of condiments. Nothing was overwhelmingly spicy, but if you like more heat, you can definitely request it. The service was excellent--attentive, cordial, and respectful. The ambiance is definitely a small, hole-in-the-wall type of spot, but honestly, don't let the size fool you--the food is delicious! Sometimes the best food comes from the smallest places. I had a recommendation from a friend to stop here, I am glad I did! I am a firm believer that the fancier the Mexican restaurant, the more bland the food will be. This location is not a flashy place, it is very simple. But, the food is incredible. I opted for a simple order of carne asada tacos and al pastor tacos. These are my barometer dishes to guage the quality of the food. Both of the tacos were wonderful. The carne asada was seasoned and grilled to perfection. The al pastor was marinated and juicy and so full of flavor. The sign to me that this spot is focused on the food was the handmade tortillas. It takes a lot of effort and skill to be able to make perfect corn tortillas! The ladies behind the counter were so friendly and I could tell they put a lot of love into the food they prepare. We visited Antojitos La Jefa on the recommendation of our neighbors. Off we went ! We went for breakfast but their menu offered a wide variety of options, with delicious sounding tacos and other magical treats. For me, the tortilla chips and salsa are a good litmus test of how the food is going to be. All I can say is the chips were AMAZING. Crisp and flavorful. These chips were clearly homemade. The salsa was meh, but the chips were amazing. On this day, we were taken care of two wonderful Latina's, which added to the authenticity of the experience. I overheard our waitress saying she was from Mexico City. Legit. Our friends ordered the Sopas and Birria "soup". The Sopas looked amazing, with a hand formed tortilla and served with a variety of proteins. Our friend ordered the carnitas and chorizo, to have a couple of flavors to sample. She said that the tortilla was bit different than "her mom would make" but did not take away anything from the dish. Her husband had the Birria "soup". I don't know if that was the official name but that's what it looked like. LOL. Served in a rich broth (not oily) were wonderfully seasoned, tender chunks of Birria beef. Whenever a Mexican restaurant offers Menudo for breakfast, I'm down. Menudo it was. This dish was served with Tripe only, lacking the familiar hominy in the dish. I came to understand, the inclusion of hominy varies, depending on where in Mexico the recipe comes from. Well, all right, now I know. The kiss of death of Menudo is if the soup is "oily". No oily broth here. The dish was perfect, served all the normal accoutrement, including onions, cilantro and oregano. Now about the tortillas. We were told that the tortillas were hand made. O-M-G. These were the most delicious corn tortillas I have ever had. I couldn't stop eating them. OMG. Last but not least, my wife ordered the breakfast burrito. She ordered it with bacon instead of the normal Chorizo. Her breakfast burrito was legit. I don't know how they prepared their potatoes but man-o-man were they good. The burrito is also served with Mexican Queso. SO GOOD. The cheese added creamy goodness to the burrito. What a great meal. The restaurant is small but super clean and the staff were amazing. We started eating here from the truck outside of oreilley's (or maybe it's autozone, i forget). This food is made with LOVE, it's the best restaurant in Carson, yes, the BEST out of all types of food here. As far as closing early, or whatever else, this is a genuine Mexican restaurant and it seems family owned. If there's no customers coming in, it's fine and expected to close a little early. These are real people, not machines, making delicious, love filled food. Sometimes the hours might not be exact, but that's the price you pay for eating really really good Mexican food. The tacos were great! Made with home made tortillas and large for size. I ordered 3 Al pastor and 2 carne asada for my daughter. The only reason I knocked down a star was because the lady serving us couldn't hear me because the music was too loud and she came off rude when asking what I wanted on the tacos. I don't expect to be treated like royalty when I go out to eat, absolutely not, but it would be nice to be served by someone who doesn't have an attitude. There were several choices of meat that were 'authentic' choices, but I'm not brave with meat. Would have liked to have seen carnitas though. The burritos were huge, flavorful, fresh, and delicious. Trying to decide on a lunch spot and picked Antojitos La Jefa and wow! We live close and drive by often but always seem to miss it as a choice. What a shame! This place rocks!! We ordered the 3 taco plate a couple tamales (one pork one chicken) and some empanadas (beef birria). The boss lady behind the counter was killing it! Being from LA I was looking forward to this place as I love small family run Mexican restaurants. I was actually immediately confused. The woman at the register hands me a menu and then said there were 3 menus. I could barely hear her because there was loud music playing but eventually realized the other two menus were on the floor in front of the register. I ordered 3 tacos and she asked if I wanted the taco special. This meant the Taco Tuesday special is also available on Wednesday . None of this actually bothers me because I'll walk through hell for good tacos. When I got home my first observation was how watery the refried beans were. The tacos were ok but definitely lacking some spice. It could be my pasty Irish skin that makes people assume I can't handle the heat even though I eat whole habanero peppers when I'm bored. I probably won't go here again but she did seem to be saying enchiladas were their specialty so maybe that is the thing to get. read more
