This is my last day in Carson, till we head back over to Sacramento tomorrow morning. I have my crew doing some last minute work, so I'm having lunch with a local friend that wanted to show me a deep fried burrito. I normally get burritos at a lot of different burrito joints all over, but never had one deep fried. I thought that would just be like a chimichanga. But this doesn't have cheese and sauce all over, it's basically a super burrito with everything inside and then dumped into the deep fryer. We drive thru a bunch of street construction and find a place to park in the parking lot. The building looks like an old Taco Bell but painted bright blue. This parking lot is pretty busted up. We park and go in. My friend does the ordering. We get a nice booth and the food is up in maybe 7 or 8 minutes. Wow, I never seen a deep fried burrito like this. We eat like this was a regular burrito, by hand eating from one end. The fried flour tortilla is easy to hold and doesn't fall apart. Spicy salsa is available in a big squeeze bottle. Wow, this is dang tasty! I like the flour tortilla isn't all doughy like in a regular burrito, it seems thinner being fried. I kinda like this. The marinated pork with rice and beans and cheese inside tastes good in that combination. If you want this, just ask for a deep fried super burrito with whatever meat you want. I'm glad I tried this. Now it's back with the crew and off we go back to Sacramento. read more

I used to come here all the time cuz they had Tongue Tacos. Alas, no more, and for many many years. Now I seek fish. They have a deep fried whole fish that's very tasty. About the same price as San Marcos Grill. Choose to come here for my fish (try to have fish 4 times a week), the fish they had was frozen, boo hoo. To be fair, we came late, about an hour before closing. The guy offered to thaw it quickly but we were all unsure if it would cook too much. So I chose the fish fillet in garlic butter sauce but guess what. That's not what I got. Dang. I got basically fish sticks. Breaded, over fried and even my salad had nothing on it. Not a good night for Darla. Don't worry though. I will be back and ask for my whole fish again. It IS yummy! read more

Wish I could give zero stars. Beware of this establishment. The food is spoiled. Three hours after eating at Playa Azul, I was throwing up and had diarrhea. still feel sick. Food poisoning or just rancid oily chips or old food because of slow business due to road work slowing business down. Old food. Old oily chips. Meat is not fresh. Just thinking about my horrible lunch gives me the yucks. I ordered nachos today with carnitas. Kept hearing the microwave slamming in the kitchen. Just thought maybe they were melting the cheese. Apparently they were trying to refresh old chips. The chips were so soggy and full of old oil that I could only eat a few along with the dried out carnitas. Probably the worst plate of nachos ive ever had. Thanks for the diarrhea Playa Azul. I'll never return and I hope you start selling fresh food soon. read more

I stopped in here yesterday after a co-worker recommended the place. He suggested getting the chile relleno. It's been years since I've had a chili relleno. The place was small. Kind of run down looking. The outside and inside was blue. Hence the name, "Playa Azul." There was no line so I was able to order immediately. Their menu was posted on the wall up front. I didn't really look at the menu though. I already knew what I wanted, the chile relleno combination. I got the food to go. When I got home I tried the rice and beans first. Man it was good. Then I ate the chili relleno. The flavors and textures of the food were great. I savored each bite and at the same time pretty much inhaled it. There's something to be said about those, "hole in the wall" restaurants. This place had great tasting food. The next time I come back, I'll try a burrito. If it's anything like their chili relleno, it's got to be good. read more

Just thought I'd update some developments here at Playa Azul: I don't know when it started but recently, they started charging a service fee for credit card or basically any non-cash transaction. The fee is 4%, which I think I kinda high, but maybe that's what they have to pay to the card companies. Credit card fees used to be just rolled into the cost of doing business, but seems the trend is coming to start charging for credit card use. I usually pay cash, but had to use a card this time and was surprised by the fee. That 4% kinda adds up on a larger order, so lesson is BRING CASH. The food is still good as ever. Big stuffed burritos for around $9.00 ... $10 if you don't have cash. read more

It brought back so many memories being in an Old Taco Bell when you could get a a taco or burrito for $.25 so long ago. And the enchilada sauce was absolutely amazing just like they used to put on the Encherito at Taco Bell, which is no more. The food was absolutely amazing and the service as well. This is a great little no-frills Mexican restaurant. Affordable and friendly, Playa Azul makes for a great fast lunch. I got the California burrito and left pretty satisfied. Coming from a Mexican household, I have pretty high standards for a Mexican restaurant- the meat (carne asada, in my case) needs to be flavorful and with minimal gristle; the beans need to be toothsome and creamy, but not gritty; and the rice needs to be well-seasoned. I thought my burrito hit two out of three. The beans and meat were good, but my rice tasted unseasoned. The fries inside of the burrito also needed a little more salt. Minor complaints though, and overall I enjoyed the burrito. I appreciated the fact that they offered sliced avocado- I personally prefer that in a burrito instead of guacamole, and it's hard to find at most fast-casual restaurants. Avocado was also only $0.75, which is pretty much unheard of. I also liked the orange sauce (habanero?) at the salsa bar. Overall I thought this was a solid lunch. I paid $22 for the California burrito plus avocado, chile relleno burrito, a can of Coke, and a glass of Pepsi (fountain drink). I plan on eating here again next time I'm in Carson City. read more

Great service and good quality food for the price. Honestly no fuss food, simply seasoning but not overcooked or overworked. The tortillas are heated and not fried (my preference) and you can add you own condiments to the tacos. Great quick lunch spot! Will be returning to try other items. read more

Wanted a quick lunch before my recent round of golf, so I popped in for a meal. This place used to be a fast-food restaurant that they've converted into a family-run, fast-casual concept. I ordered two items for my meal, their carne asada fries (something they are known for) and a tamal. The carne asada fries were just okay, not much flavor on the meat which was a bit chewy. Adding salsa fresca and hot sauce helped "dress up" the dish and it was much better from there. The pork tamal was also just okay, a little dry and tough so it also needed sauces to make it seem moist. I would probably come here again (if in the area) but would not make a special trip for it. read more

My first meal, the night we moved from CA to NV was here. 25 years later (+1month) and I was there yesterday. The machaca is great, as are the tortas. But I judge carnitas burritos harshly having grown accustomed to Hectors in Watsonville. I've not been disappointed. Take from that opinion what you will. A pretty good taco joint in a blue brick building on William Street near Carson Street. They have tacos de cabeza, but NOT tacos de lengua. Cilantro and onions are dished out in a skimpy plastic bag, and salsa is available in infinite quantity at the counter. Actually the tacos are pretty good. Wash 'em down with horchata. They also have menudo and other soups. Once again, a skimpy plastic bag of cilantro and onion. But good enough. The menudo is a VERY LARGE serving. But it is good-- even my wife likes it, and she is from China. They have some strange sounding dishes on the menu which I have never tried, such as "huevos divorciados". Is it legal for eggs to get married and divorced in Nevada? What if they are infertile eggs? Couldn't they just get an annulment? And why would eggs that are going to be eaten even need a divorce, no matter how much they might hate each other? While luxuriating in their dining area, you can read a free Spanish language newspaper to brush up on the skills you have forgotten since school. The dining area is well windowed with plenty of light for reading. Overall, I recommend this place. But if you need alcohol and darkness, go someplace else. Playa Azul is a total dive, but I love it! Although the place is sometimes not kept perfectly clean or modern, the food is the highlight. You can get the biggest, fattest, and freshest burrito for absolutely nothing. I highly recommend chorizo or tongue. The service is quick and efficient. I highly recommend Playa Azul. read more

Consider getting Mexican food from somewhere else. I got carne asada nachos and my partner got a bean and cheese burrito w/ horchatas. The carne asada was a day old then they heated up the food (chips, cheese, beans and meat) in the microwave to I guess melt the cheese and it just made it 5X's worse. The chips were chewy and meat was dehydrated. They slapped on a cream that was watery and four day old pico de gallo. My partner's bean and cheese burrito was not any better. The beans were watery. The horchata had a weird after taste. Go eat somewhere else. Might I recommend Rivas or Antojitos La Jefa. read more

Decided to give Playa Azul another try. Some years ago, we had a bad experience there and have been frequenting other restaurants in our area ever since. But they're close to my house, so we ordered the #4 - tacos with rice & beans, carne asada. I ordered mine without cilantro, due to allergies. The portion of meat in each taco was generous and there was very little gristle in the meat, but it had very little flavor and was overcooked and dry. I was also surprised that they were served without onions. There was no sauce in the to-go bag, so I had to use my own at home. Rice was average, beans were tasty and runny. I didn't really like that it hasn't been updated to include a better menu, register, seating, and atmosphere. Even though I haven't tried many items on the menu, I'd recommend coming here for the tortas alone! My wife ordered chili verde and I had the chimichanga. The chili verde was what you might call gourmet portion sized, and while being pork in sauce wasnt chili verde. On the side was french fries and some shredded iceberg lettuce and wedges of tomato, good ol hamburger fixins. Also undercooked. The chimichanga was a burrito smothered in enchilada sauce. The only thing in the "chimichanga" was meat and cheese, and the only flavor was that of canned enchilada sauce. Very confused about all the positive reviews regarding the food. Been coming here for years. I recently moved back from Las Vegas and I am so glad to be back. I missed this place! While there are some great choices for food down there, the burritos and nachos are nothing like here. I have yet to try the more authentic stuff like lengua and pescados fritas, but give me some time to get hungry again. The portions are very, very generous.
