Love this Mexican restaurant! I had a breakfast plate with chorizo that hit the spot. Their salsa is amazing & service was quick. I would love to go back and try other items on the menu.

This is a great little no-frills Mexican restaurant. Affordable and friendly, Playa Azul makes for a great fast lunch. I got the California burrito and left pretty satisfied. Coming from a Mexican household, I have pretty high standards for a Mexican restaurant- the meat (carne asada, in my case) needs to be flavorful and with minimal gristle; the beans need to be toothsome and creamy, but not gritty; and the rice needs to be well-seasoned. I thought my burrito hit two out of three. The beans and meat were good, but my rice tasted unseasoned. The fries inside of the burrito also needed a little more salt. Minor complaints though, and overall I enjoyed the burrito. I appreciated the fact that they offered sliced avocado- I personally prefer that in a burrito instead of guacamole, and it's hard to find at most fast-casual restaurants. Avocado was also only $0.75, which is pretty much unheard of. I also liked the orange sauce (habanero?) at the salsa bar. Overall I thought this was a solid lunch. I paid $22 for the California burrito plus avocado, chile relleno burrito, a can of Coke, and a glass of Pepsi (fountain drink). I plan on eating here again next time I'm in Carson City.

Great service and good quality food for the price. Honestly no fuss food, simply seasoning but not overcooked or overworked. The tortillas are heated and not fried (my preference) and you can add you own condiments to the tacos. Great quick lunch spot! Will be returning to try other items.

Wanted a quick lunch before my recent round of golf, so I popped in for a meal. This place used to be a fast-food restaurant that they've converted into a family-run, fast-casual concept. I ordered two items for my meal, their carne asada fries (something they are known for) and a tamal. The carne asada fries were just okay, not much flavor on the meat which was a bit chewy. Adding salsa fresca and hot sauce helped "dress up" the dish and it was much better from there. The pork tamal was also just okay, a little dry and tough so it also needed sauces to make it seem moist. I would probably come here again (if in the area) but would not make a special trip for it.

Veggie Burrito

A veggie burrito is what I got today. Honestly this is really my go to. It is so delicious. I have eaten at this restaurant so many time I cannot count. And NEVER have I had a problem with their service, or quality of food. The food is amazing always no matter what I get. The staff is prompt and kind. And my food is ready faster than any other restaurant in town. This is a my try in Carson!! Been here for years and there's a reason why!

Put some hot sauce on my breakfast burritooooo babyyy - try to get that out of your head now and yes it's from one of my favorite movies LOL. And yes I sang this as we went to pick up our called in order previously saying to my hubby to order one for himself because this gal is NOT sharing her chorizo, egg, potatoes, refried beans, shredded cheese wrapped up in a gigantic flour tortilla then drizzled with Playa Azul's homemade salsa thank you very mucho lol Playa Azul has been in Carson City for many, many years and for us a go to for breakfast burritos on many a weekend and they have NEVER disappointed with taste, service and price. We have had many different items from their menu from Tortas to Tacos and an occasional lunch special but for our family we stick to ordering either Machaca or Chorizo Breakfast Burritos to share or just downright overly stuff ourselves. Then that song starts playing in our heads and their homemade salsa/hot sauces & onion, cilantro, fresh pepper bar beckons us to fill up all the little to-go containers so each bite of our WONDERFUL Breakfast Burritooooo is covered with hot sauce babyyyyy Where to go to get these wonderful burritos - Playa Azul is located on Hwy 50E aka William Street next to Smith's grocery store in an older building that reminds me of an old Taco Bell from back in the day. They do have some seating inside and it's just your a-typical taco stand, meaning definitely nothing fancy. Order at the counter, grab your hot sauce babyyy, they call your name when order is ready and seat yourself - similar to fast food restaurant style. ENJOY and Happy Yelping!

Quality/Quantity - Complimentary Chips and Salsa - Love hearty chips, and my wife thought they were home made...? I think it was store bought... Quesabirria Tacos - 4 (small) tacos, a cup of sauce and a side of condiments, toppings. See pictures. If you have been following, I have been on a Birria Taco quest, trying this type of tacos every change I get. These were just okay. The sauce was good and it had generous meat/beef. But it lacked cheese?!?! See my last Birria Taco review at Mama Papa. Chimichanga - My wife really enjoyed this. She did not believe me when I told her that this was a deep fried burrito, lol. Generous portions, and she was only able to eat half. Guess we have dinner tonight. My wife and I felt the food was fairly authentic. BTW - EVERYONE ordered soup!! Menudo, Pozole, 7 Mares or Caldo de Res, etc! My wife really wanted to order this to try, but it was 70 degrees outside. Just means we have to come back. :) Kids menu also available. Atmosphere - Small location, the indoor and outdoor space was about the same size. Full of locals, everyone sort of knew each other which was cool. Semi open kitchen. One unisex restroom, I did not bother to check it out. Open 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm as per Yelp. Plenty of parking Service - Overall good, welcoming. Counter or table service. We kind of stood out, and not in a negative way. The owner/cashier wanted to make sure we enjoyed our meal. The waiter was a hard worker, cleaning our table, and bringing out chips and salsa to us. Then we went to the counter to order. Price - No prices on the menus?!?! $30 + generous tip. Reasonably priced, but for a "hole in the wall"?!?! Owner Comment - Congrats on your success.

Every now and then I have one of those where have I been moments?…read moreWell, today was one of those times. I was at a plaza, not far from where San Marcos Grill is located. We were hungry and decided we wanted Mexican food. We've been really tired of the place we've been visiting as we are regulars there. We've been really wanting to try something new and I remembered there was a place down the street from the plaza we were at. San Marcos Grill is not very hard to find. It's just off the main drag going through Carson City on Winnie Lane. We pulled in to the parking lot and I have to be honest. My first thought was wow I hope this place is good. Because I had my doubts being in a strip mall. But you never know unless you try. So we walked, and I was amazed, how awesome this place looked I'm talking very festive, very clean. Tables were well spaced out. The lady greeted us immediately and pointed us to a table where we could sit at. She was there taking our drink orders very quickly. As we sat and looked over the menu, I could not get over the size and beauty of the bar that they have in this establishment. Complete with a great selection of any kind of drink, you could possibly want also TVs that are spaced around the establishment so if you want to watch a sport event, there's not a bad seat anywhere in the restaurant. After looking over the menu, our server came to our table was a very nice young lady and took our orders. My wife chose the beef enchiladas, and a taquito, which comes with rice and beans As I always do with a new establishment, I chose the Carnitas plate. I am a Carnitas aficionado and I always try everyone's Carnitas to see if they are legit. As we're waiting for our food, I noticed an older gentleman who was just helping everybody, come to find out he is the owner. I do not know his name, but he's very friendly guy and very warm and welcoming. As I said, the establishment is very spacious and clean. The bathroom was even clean, so it was a real joy to be there, even though we were waiting on our food, which did not take very long. My wife ordered a margarita that she really liked and I just had a Modelo with a lime. The gentleman I just told you about who I think is the owner brought our food to us and it looked amazing. Needless to say, we dug right into our food and I could not get over how great these Carnitas tasted. Not everyone can make really good Carnitas, they're either dry or they're cooked too long to were they are too crispy. These are so tender and flavorful. I enjoyed every bite. My plate came with rice in a small bowl of beans, a garnish of avocado, sour cream and pico. It also came with very hot corn tortillas The tortillas, however we're spoiled and tasted really old. In fact, you can smell how old they were. I let our server know, but it was no big deal because I had tortilla chips still on the table. She offered to get me some new tortillas, but it was fine because I only use the tortilla to kind of put my food onto the fork. So the tortilla chips worked just fine. I kept trying to eat the Carnitas slowly because I was savoring it so much. I did not want to hurry and be done with the meal too fast. This was our first visit here, and I can tell you that we will be back and probably become regulars. The staff here is very wonderful welcoming and I cannot recommend this place high enough to anyone that wants a great place to eat really great Mexican food. Kudos to the staff.!

For me, the tortilla chips and salsa are a good litmus test of how the food is going to be. All I can say is the chips were AMAZING. Crisp and flavorful. These chips were clearly homemade. The salsa was meh, but the chips were amazing. On this day, we were taken care of two wonderful Latina's, which added to the authenticity of the experience. I overheard our waitress saying she was from Mexico City. Legit. Our friends ordered the Sopas and Birria "soup". The Sopas looked amazing, with a hand formed tortilla and served with a variety of proteins. Our friend ordered the carnitas and chorizo, to have a couple of flavors to sample. She said that the tortilla was bit different than "her mom would make" but did not take away anything from the dish. Her husband had the Birria "soup". I don't know if that was the official name but that's what it looked like. LOL. Served in a rich broth (not oily) were wonderfully seasoned, tender chunks of Birria beef. Whenever a Mexican restaurant offers Menudo for breakfast, I'm down. Menudo it was. This dish was served with Tripe only, lacking the familiar hominy in the dish. I came to understand, the inclusion of hominy varies, depending on where in Mexico the recipe comes from. Well, all right, now I know. The kiss of death of Menudo is if the soup is "oily". No oily broth here. The dish was perfect, served all the normal accoutrement, including onions, cilantro and oregano. Now about the tortillas. We were told that the tortillas were hand made. O-M-G. These were the most delicious corn tortillas I have ever had. I couldn't stop eating them. OMG. Last but not least, my wife ordered the breakfast burrito. She ordered it with bacon instead of the normal Chorizo. Her breakfast burrito was legit. I don't know how they prepared their potatoes but man-o-man were they good. The burrito is also served with Mexican Queso. SO GOOD. The cheese added creamy goodness to the burrito. What a great meal. The restaurant is small but super clean and the staff were amazing. We are looking forward to sampling more of the menu. Que Bueno
