Let's get this out of the way: Vegans and even vegetarians will want to note that the famous bloody Mary they make here has a Worcestershire sauce that contains anchovies. it is not even remotely vegetarian. No matter. there are plenty of other drinks on the menu that will assuage your herbivorous sensibilities. note as well but there's a sign saying only service dogs are allowed. I travel with my service dog, shown in these photos. but if you have a dog who's mainly a pet you may need to leave them in an environmentally controlled vehicle or at home. Well the ambience can't be beat here. The ceilings are surprisingly tall for someplace of this age. There's no shortage of things to look at on the wall. Very interesting. The wife and I went to the South Lake Tahoe area, and stayed at David Walley's Resort. Sure, we went over the pass 3-4 times during our week stay to the lake, but we also discovered THIS gem while exploring the immediate area. We loved this place so much that we were impressed with ourselves the day that we did NOT make a stop by this bar, and perhaps we even stopped by twice if eating in Genoa. You walk in (by the way, look like a regular, and PUSH the very low doorknob, not pull like I did initially) and immediately know it is dripping with history, divey-ness, and awesomeness. The crowd comes in waves, as it is a popular drop-in for people coming through town as well as many very welcoming and friendly locals. Actually, I want to say again how awesome the regulars were. Not sure how I would feel if constant tourist dropped in my homestead, but everyone we talked to who was local was awesome and inviting. The bar had an IPA for me. They have a pool table. They have a jukebox (which defaulted to glam rock when we were there, so I LOVED that). They have cool merch. They have some awesome stuff on walls and ceiling. They have some fantastic mixed drinks, including one of the better Bloody Mary's my wife has had as well as a unique, tasty hot drink (Hot Buttered Buccaneer Drink). They have a spacious outdoor area. They don't have food, but we had a burger and burger salad (wife) from the food truck there, and it was stellar. The fries were great too. Back to the bar though. And, every bartender who served us during the week gave us friendly, efficient, perfect service. Once we realized that South Tahoe was irritatingly tourist overpopulated at this time of year, we decided to attend this cool candle-lighting tradition they did on NYE there instead of figuring out logistics over the pass. The event was SOOOO cool, and they even had a fun band later that night that they somehow packed into the jukebox corner. Hope I don't forget anyone. Whether you get Syd, Gabby, Candi, Dee, Carrie, or Ginger (the only one I didn't meet personally), you will love your experience here. They were all rock stars during our visits. I can't say enough good things about this bar, it really made "our South Tahoe trip," and you should swing by if in the area. Older bar in the state?? It's a great stop. Genoa is a small little quaint town a bit out there f Carson city. I only discovered this place due to friends. Great bar. Lots of regulars and visitors alike. Went there twice both times had a hamburger type food truck outside. If you're in the area and are thirsty definitely give this place a go. read more

This is the oldest bar in the state of Nevada and a scenic and historic place to bring friends. Located at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the small town of Genoa, this is a popular place to come on the weekends. Close by are Walley's Hot Springs and a cute little downtown area to explore. The drinks are poured heavy and there's bartenders hustle to sling drinks to all the thirsty patrons. They probably are tired of doing this over and over, but if you ask the bartender nicely, they will shine a flashlight into their historic diamond dust mirror which evidently came over by ship from Italy to the east coast in the 1800's and came across the country to Genoa by wagon train...! There were two mirrors originally, but one was sold to help fund the repairs to the bar after a fire. Great stop to make! You won't be disappointed! read more

Awesome bar nestled at the foothills. Plenty of outside seating with fire pits. Mostly locals, we found this place by happenstance. The bar inside still has the original counter top. Great little bar. We come here at least once a year when we have a golf tourney with a bunch of friends. Other guests are always so friendly. Bartenders are awesome! We were there Monday afternoon...fun times with Kari and Carissa tending the bar. Tonight (April 28) was a little different. There was one customer, a local I gather, that got in our face while we where shooting pool. We were cheering each other on, etc. A pool stick fell on the floor and he came up to our two friends who were shooting and demanded they pick up the pool stick and put it back on the rack. He also complained about the noise. There was confrontation between our friends, who were 'defending' our friend who was just trying to shoot, and his friends I take it. One of his friends said 'he just wants to enjoy his beer in peace and quiet.' I say to that, 'maybe you should just drink at home.' Not only is this a bar, it's a landmark bar that everyone's encouraged to visit. We weren't roudy...just enjoying ourselves. One of our friends stated aloud that the bartender should do something, to which locals said 'don't put it on the bartender.' Umm, isn't that part of her job? She kicked us out...but why only us when the other guy started it...be fair next time and kick us all out, including the local! All the bartender kept saying was 'I don't need this shit on a Tuesday!' We have never caused problems at this bar or any other bar... we have always enjoyed the bartenders and other customers here. I even tried shaking that guys hand for whatever happened, and he refused. And back to that guy...there was a group of folks shooting pool as we got there. They too were enjoying themselves. Apparently, this curmudgeon came up to them, told them to be quiet and made one of the girls cry. They left. Other than this unreasonable, uneducated, ill mannered 'gentlemen,' this bar is great! read more

The historic significance of Genoa Bar is quite interesting. It states it is the oldest thirst parlor in Nevada in the oldest settlement in Nevada! The ambiance is old western style with lots of cowboy paraphernalia and pictures all around. The service is fun and friendly. The drinks are interesting and fun. The Lavendar Lemon Fizz was new and refreshing on a hot summer day. The draft beer was reasonably priced and ice cold. There was a wedding at a venue nearby and many of the fancy dressed folks mosied on down to the Saloon on their dresses and fancy clothes and boots to experience the Genoa Bar, including a game of billiards. Such a fun place to check out and grab a drink while in Genoa. It's got a historic feel to it for a local biker type bar that welcomes everyone from locals, tourists, bikers, celebrities, etc. they have a food truck out front but I think it's just open on weekends. Our bartender was great and friendly. She was putting out drinks quickly as things began to pick up. The bar has some cute trifolds that has history on the bar which includes Raquel Welch's bra that still hangs from the wall. The drink menu was delicious. I tried two of the cocktails and both were good. But I loved the Six Shooter. Make sure you stop in and grab a drink or two when you're in town. read more

Came here to have a drink when visiting Genoa for the first time and my first impression of the place was wow, it's so popular! There were way more people there than I expected! We walked in and the inside gives off old fashion saloon and I loved it! We were able to go right up to the bar after a group of people walked out and I asked what the bartender recommended which was the cucumber Spritza and she asked if I liked lavender. I said I did so she added lavender syrup and it was a great touch. Great drink! I want another! Service was great! The bartender was very smiley and helpful. We came back this time with the pup in tow! Needed to add an update because this place is an ideal spot to bring your dog. Fig was everyone's best friend! The amazing bartender had treats ready so Fig did her treat dance. When we got bored of hanging with everyone inside we went to hang out by the roaring fire pit. Been trying to check this place out since I moved to Tahoe 4 years ago. Luckily I had friends visit and they wanted to check out the surrounding area. I told them about the oldest bar in NV is located nearby and they were up for it. After visiting Virginia City we headed to Genoa. We arrived on a Saturday around 5pm and it was alittle busy. Walking into the bar was a similar feeling walking into the bars in Virginia City. The rustic bar felt something straight out of a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood western movie. The old photos and paintings on the wall with the antique chandeliers added to the mystic of the bar. I asked the bartender what was the bar's drink and she said the John Wayne. How appropriate. I was thinking it was going to be a shot of Rye whisky or something similar but it was a bloody mary that they have been serving for 30 years. I tried it out because it was made with a bacon infused vodka so that sounded interesting. And I must say it was pretty good. The bartenders were friendly and helpful with the bars history too.. So if you enjoy old western bars go and check it out you won't be disappointed. read more

Cute ole timey bar that was established in 1851. Decorated with unique antiques with a fire in the back. Has live music on Sundays with plenty of seating outside. Service was friendly and attentive. We stopped here in the early afternoon on a Sunday. We have been here before and always thought it was cool. It is known as Nevada's oldest thirst parlor. There is so much history about this place, we will leave it up to you to research. There are picnic tables in front and places to sit on the porch. There is this really cool artsy wood stove in the front as well. It was burning on this cooler spring day and felt great! The outdoor area has also been enlarged to include a side area with a fire pit and what used to be the little store attached to the bar on the right is now a space where they prepare and serve drinks to people outside, it is a great addition! They also had someone making tacos under a canopy which were available to purchase to go with the libations from the bar. We just happened to stumble here today when they were having one of their porch parties that they have during the better weather months. The band that was playing was Dougie L & the Lost Reverend's. What a cool name! We took a walk inside where the band was playing and it was packed with people enjoying and singing along. After hanging out a bit inside, we stepped outside, ordered a drink and hung out and enjoyed the atmosphere and planning the rest of our day. Overall, the Genoa Bar is the center of this quaint town full of history and charm. You really can't find a better dive bar with all this history. read more

It saddens me to leave a 2 star review to such a fun, local, tourist, community bar, but we had a sad experience today. We went to enjoy a beautiful afternoon cocktail or two with intentions of sitting by the fire pit outside which was not turned on. We asked the very nice bartender to please turn on the fire pit but she was immediately told " no" by the owner who was sitting at the end of the bar. We thanked her and opted to sit on the porch out front since the inside of the bar was packed. The heaters overhead on the porch were on low, mind you it was 40 degrees with a wind chill factor of about 30 out side! Needless to say, we, as locals were extremely disappointed & it left a very bad taste in our mouth of greed..Sad times..things are changing and not for the better... read more

I came here with a group of friends Friday May 6 in the evening. Luckily, there was one table in the front corner of the bar that we were able to snag for our group of 5. My boyfriend ordered us each a drink, I don't know what it was as I told him to surprise me, but I'm confident it was some kind of whiskey drink. It was delicious! It was well made and the proportions of alcohol to mixer was perfect. The decor of the old bar was definitely true to the time period of the bar's origin. I like that they kept it original and didn't modernize much. There is a pool table for entertainment. Bathroom (at least the ladies room) was relatively modernized and didn't look like the original era. There was plenty of space in this bathroom, I've noticed in older places the bathrooms are rather cramped, so I appreciate the room to move while business is being done.
