Stopped in for some cold beverages and to tent camp overnight. Amazing conversations at the bar, which has two refrigerators and a good variety of canned beer and seltzers. Service was awesome and friendly. Set up our tent for the night in the meadow, which is a very short walk down from the bar. Even on a three day weekend, there were plenty of camping spots available. Will definitely return again soon. read more

Never in a million years would I expect to find the quintessential dive bar in THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE! This little joint is the bomb-dignity. And, when I say that, I mean it! If you like dive bars like I do, well my friend, you are in for a treat!! Rance, the bartender/general manager of the entire property (they have rustic cabins for rent and a campground (also rustic) for your lodging needs) knows a metric ton of history of the property (40 acres) and its multiple owners. Originally, it was a stopover for horse ridden and drawn wagons back in the day headed east and west. If only the walks could talk!?!?! They have events that are becoming quite popular including Red-neck Olympics which have multiple games including frozen pea spitting contests. Stopped here on a long bike ride from Cool to Loon Lake. Fun place to check out. Lots of "character." Bartender was very nice and let us fill up our water bottles. I couldn't recommend their beer selection, but I was more interested in a soda and chips on the hot ride. Worth a stop. read more

If you like western olde skool, laid back, rickety joynts at the end of a dirt road in the middle of the forest exuding loads of character and loaded with characters, along with plenty of dollar bills on the ceiling, then this place is for you! During the 3 day holiday weekends, they'll have live music and tri tip catered lunch with plenty of room outdoors for kicking it with friends you haven't met yet. If you are headed to the Rubicon Trail then you will eventually be drawn here like metal filings to a magnet, and you will come away surprised at what you found. There is nothing glorious or pleasing to the eye here, or at least that is how it seems on first glance. But whether you spend 10 minutes or 10 hours here you will drive away feeling connected to this place. The utter lack of pretension, the eclectic mix of international souvenirs left by generations of visitors (the place has been running since the 1860's), and the remote location all conspire to make this place into something unique. One of those places where when I am there, there is no other place I would rather be (particularly until I finish my beer). I was riding my moto and close to not making it on gas, and the bartender was kind enough to give me some. If you show up and its closed, and you need to break in to survive the cold, do so, but leave a note for the owners to know about what you did. You never know, the owner may be so impressed and then just call to offer you the job of bartender (the bartenders at the time, a couple, told me this story a while back). Love this place!!! Visited as a child and continue to visit. Very kick-back and welcoming. 150+ years old, runs on generator, has horseshoe pits and BBQ grill open for use. It's a cold beer and soda only bar... NO food. Sometimes BBQ food vendor on holidays or the community potluck. Don't be shy about bringing a picnic or asking the bartender questions. If you're not happy when you leave, you probably arrived unhappy. read more

Umm..what to say about a place called "Uncle Tom's Cabin"? I've been here several times. I camped here (IN THE SNOW! GEESH) over New Years (and would recommend that you just rent one of the mini cabins on site) and have had my fair share of "almost cold Bud Lights" (see below!) on the recliner next to a good-ole-boy taking a nap on the couch with the Bar Dog (Nikki) next to him. I'd like to think that I know of this super-secret-special-mountain-local hangout. Alas, apparently I'm not the only one. Just expect to pay only in cash. Bathrooms are co-ed vault toilets. Bring a dollar bill to contribute to the owner's retirement plan. Don't act like city folk, and drink your d@m^ beer while it's still kinda cold! read more

It's really an anomaly all on its own. When I first walked in you are taken back by the dollar bills coating all immovable surfaces. If that does not get you, there is also someone usually asleep in a recliner and a pampered golden retriever hanging out. It had to be the most comfortable bar I have ever been to! Yes there are lots of bikers and county folk, but everyone I met was very nice and friendly. After the Norman Rockwell flashback we paid a nominal fee for some almost cool Bud Light out of what looked like a 1954 ice box. Not sure if there was anything else available and the bathrooms were an out house about 200 feet away but we did not care and this place still gets 5 stars. read more

Had a great time here. Wife and I stopped in prior to running the Rubicon Trail. We were immediately warmly welcomed by the two staff members who were working. They thanked us for driving like a sane person down the dirt road not kicking up a bunch of dust to coat the place. The bartender talked about the history of the place and added in a lot of humorous stories. Other than another couple who arrived a little later on we had the place to ourselves. Uncle Toms Cabin now serves Sierra Nevada Pale Ale! You must stop in for a cold one if you are driving, or riding by. It's just short dirt track off Wentworth Springs Road. I highly recommend this old Pony Express stop to anyone driving past. read more

Uncle Tom's is the ultimate place to escape and not be found - the beer is ice cold (well, most of the time) and the the people who frequent the place are rough around the edges but always polite - be nice to them and they will be nice to you - but if you cross them or come across as a liberal then look out! Be sure to staple a dollar bill on the wall or ceiling and put your name on it. The scenery is beautiful and the atmosphere is always inviting. Dogs need to be leashed and take cash as there is no ATM and credit is not accepted. read more

If you are coming down Wentworth Springs Rd. from from Icehouse Road you will miss the turn if you're not familiar with it, because the only sign is on the west side of the road (past the turnoff). My wife and I rented one of the cabins for the weekend. There was no electricity, but there were a couple of battery powered lights inside. There was no usable electricity or flushing toilets (our cabin had a toilet seat over a bucket). We liked it so much we didn't really care. The first night we got familiar with the very friendly and accommodating proprieters and their friendly golden retriever. We sat behind the bar and enjoyed an awesome campfire. We retired to the cabin about 10 pm, and were awakened by some animal underneath the cabin scratching around (probably a racoon) at about 4 am. The second day we hiked around and enjoyed the terrain. The scenery and solitude are awesome and breathtaking. The cabins are reasonable $50-$75 per weekend day, less during the week, and the very sparsely populated campground is $10 per night. You have to make reservations by internet because there is no phone service. I highly recommend this place to anyone, and will spend more weekends in the future there. read more

Uncle Tom's Cabin is like taking a step back in time when there were no cell phones, phones, computers, TV and power so if you want to get away from all of that city life this is the place to go. The staff is so laid back and friendly that it takes you back even further in time when you would feel at home and welcome. Everyone says bring a dollar to hang but the last time I was there I left a five "trust me it was worth it" Word of advice, bring lots of wood, an ice chest and all camping gear including pots and pans etc the cabins are heated by wood stove only and you cant buy food there and CASH ONLY "found out the hard way" also, it is on a first come first serve basis. The only place to shop is at Ice House Resort about 20mi. away and is not cheap. If you go to the Cabin the sign to turn off at is very old and the road is all dirt and pot holes and you will drive right by it if you have never been there before, FYI its not to far from Stumpy Meadows lake. read more
