    Tempura shrimp
    Chuck M.

The sushi was mediocre at best. Let's start with the 6 piece tempura shrimp. The tempura had a great taste to it however, the shrimp to tempura ratioratio is way off as they cut the shrimp in half. We asked to have wasabi with our tempura shrimp however they told us that wasabi does not come with the tempura shrimp. The sushi did not taste fresh by any means. The service here seemed a little bit forced as we were only one of three customers in the whole entire restaurant. You would expect outstanding guest service. It was extremely cold in the restaurant as well. I do not believe we will be coming back here.

A cheap cut of red snapper that made me want to spit it put as soon as i ate it.

Good service. Bad raw fish. It is low quality. The fish tasted old, fishy and of low quality. And when we complained about it , the cook grabbed it off the plate with his bare hand. There are signs every where inside saying they are short staffed and to be nice to the staff. Seems like people complain often but its not the service. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful. Its the rude chef. There was also a microwave running in the kitchen. They were defrosting the frozen fish in it. "Chef Mike" was busy.

My mom and I eat sushi at Amerikan Ni about once a month, our favorites are baked mussels and the Lily Sushi, so good, (yum). Try it, you wont be sorry!

The roll on the far right is supposedly the baked Sakura,, not even close

A few nights ago we decided to go to our used to be favorite sushi restaurant. We have had sushi twice in the last two weeks and it was really good so we decided to do it again. We are a family of five so every time we order from this restaurant we spend between 150 and $200. We are happy to do so because it is a local restaurant and we believe in supporting our locals. We ordered our dinner which came to approximately $170, my daughter went and picked it up, I was not really worried because we had ordered so frequently and they have done such a good job packaging it up and getting the order right we just knew it was going to be awesome this time as well. When she got home we noticed that a few of the rolls was packaged very sloppy we also order Ceviche every time and since covid-19 it has been takeout and they have always package the crispy shell separately so they don't get soggy being it is a to-go order. This time I noticed that they put the crispy shell under the ceviche so it was mushy and Soggy I was a little upset because I figured you would never put a crispy shell under wet fish on a to-go order for the simple fact that it's going to be a Mess by the time we get it home. I did not check the rest of the order before I called and said you know we always order Ceviche and it's always packaged separately but this time it was packaged all together and it's pretty inedible because the tortillas on the bottom are soggy and mushy she immediately went to defense and said that I would have had to ask to have it packaged separately. But they would credit me a Ceviche next time I came I was okay with that. After we got everything unboxed I noticed that my favorite roll the baked Sakura was not made properly. I order this roll every time I go to this sushi restaurant. The lady who answered the phone sent me to her manager Derek he asked me to text a picture over to him which I did and then he replied by saying that he checked with the chef and the sushi roll was made properly I told him this does not even look like the baked Sakura and anyone who has had this roll there before can look at it and see it is definitely not the baked Sakura. He was so disrespectful and told me that it was made correctly so they would not correct it. I told him I would not debate with him whether or not the roll was made correctly because I knew it was not the same roll I always order the problem I had mostly was his unprofessionalism and his disrespectful tone. I never said the sushi was not good it was just not what I ordered. After this episode I will have to say that I will not be returning to this restaurant anytime soon. I told them they could keep the credit for the ceviche because we would be finding a different sushi place to go to if that's the way they're going to treat their customers. They lost a good customer who supported them through this pandemic.

Our 2 Fugi Roll, the Lilly and the Godzilla. Yummy!

This young man was the best. We were brought chips and salsa, and we also requested the extra spicy for the Hubby. The mild was perfect for me. The chips were nice and crunchy with a great corn flavor. We did order a sangria for me and a margarita for the hubby. They have a really nice lunch menu with great prices and a very extensive regular menu. I ordered the #6 off the lunch menu. A chili relleno with the sauce on the side and a crispy ground beef taco. The rice was so good, great flavor as well as the refried beans. 5 stars for each of these. The taco was so full of meat (ground beef) and fresh veggies. The chilli relleno was huge and perfectly cooked. I get my sauce on the side so leftovers will not get soggy. Now this sauce was like a ranchero sauce, looked like onions, celery and maybe tomatoes in it. It was really tasty. Hubby got a #13 off the regular menu. 1 enchilada, he got ground beef, 1 crunchy taco with ground beef and a tamale which was shredded beef. I tried the tamale and it was very delicious. We did ask to speak to the Manager who looked a bit nervous coming over. We explained to him it was our very 1st visit and won't be our last. We told him everyone wants to call you over to complain, we were like we wanted to give you major compliments on everything from the awesome waiter Ivan to the food and atmosphere. Music was at a perfect tone etc. We were seated by the bar area in a booth. Very nice in that area. We will definitely be going back

I'll need to come back for a sit down with music, but for this visit it was a To-Go order at the counter. The order came out relatively quick and hot, so much so that I had to be careful taking it back to the car. It was a huge amount of food and so much so that it was good for 2 very satisfying dinners. Even a little microwaving on Night 2 didn't really dent the experience. My only quibble is that I prefer black beans to refried, but either forgot to ask or wasn't sure.

Since it was so close to opening, and to take advantage of their kids-eat-free promo, we decided to try again. Let's start with the positives: that bar is hopping. Their happy hour menu looks and sounds good, and we got drinks served to our table from the bar, and they were tasty. All started off well. I ordered the pasta with blackened chicken and added shrimp, my husband had the ribeye, and our kids had the cheese pizza and butter noodles respectively. The kids' food came out first. The flatbread pizza was what you'd expect, which is fine for a kid's menu. Nothing to write home about, but it does the trick. The butter noodles were actually very tasty! I snuck a bite while making sure it was cool enough for my youngest. My pasta, however, was not great. The chicken was not blackened--it was barely seasoned. And it was obviously some pre-cooked slices of frozen chicken. The little chunks seemed to be commercially-prepared, compressed chicken breast The taste was so off-putting, I stopped eating the chicken altogether. The shrimp, which is an add-on or substitution option, was cooked well and had good flavor. The vegetables were some frozen diced mix that were soggy and lifeless. The sauce itself was just ok. No depth of flavor and needed more salt and pepper. I would not be surprised if the sauce, chicken, and veggies were some pre-made, frozen mixture they received from their supplier, to which they added the pasta, shrimp, and some diced tomatoes. I stopped eating my meal and ate my youngest's unfinished pasta instead. It comes with no salad or bread and a hearty price tag. I definitely do not recommend. My husband's steak was cooked to the ordered temperature (mid-rare), and they did have blue cheese crumbles, which he always adds. The cut was of low quality, however, so the overall experience was subpar. Broccolini was cooked well but under seasoned. Mashed potatoes were fine. We won't be back, unless it's a date night happy hour bar situation.

We knew it wasn't going to be crowded and the food will be fresh, but it was so much more than that. Overland is lucky to employ Tennessee, who might just be the best server in the Carson Valley. I grant you that we haven't been to every restaurant and we haven't had every server and so it could be hyperbole to try to tell you that he's the best, but we need to be sure to let you know that he is clearly in the top percentile of quality, local servers. Why you ask. He anticipated our every need, and so we always had water, always had coffee, and he cleared every single time he got near the table. His positive energy is infectious. Yes, I can hear you now, what about the food? My wife can, on occasion, high maintenance, and this was one of those mornings. She ordered the Eggs Benedict without the bottom bread plus one more whole extra Eggs Benedict, and Tennessee didn't flinch. I ordered the vegetarian omelette and I had side breakfast potatoes. All of it tasted great. I even tried the hollandaise sauce on my wife's eggs Benedict and it tasted fresh and tasty. So, I say give Tennessee a raise, and when you go to the Overland, hope that you get seated in his section because it will be an experience that you won't forget soon, and the food is very good. Somehow, this breakfast restaurant is flying under the radar on Saturdays and Sundays. And we brought some Bay Area friends with us. We also came in mid-week to avoid any crowd potential. Our evening began at the bar with a round of Picon Punch, the official drink of the State of Nevada. I first thought that this was a drink that you only ordered once, but this small glass of goodness actually grew on us. After closing the bar bill and looking at all the branded merchandise, it was off to the main dining room. We chose the Basque Family Style side of the menu, which at the end of the evening resulted in number of take home containers. Our 4 choices were Basque Chicken, Fish, Lamb Shoulder, and Lamb Chops. Those came with Vegetable Soup, Salad, Beef Stew, Beans, French Fries, Bottle of Red Wine, Coffee, and Ice Cream. for the Table. These inclusive choices were priced just south of $40 and that's what the bill was at the end of the evening, as there were no extras needed. OK, the included wine was a little on the sweet side, but we didn't see the need to "upgrade" as we were too busy concentrating on the food. It was all good, especially the Soup and the French Fries. The only regret was not being here on the night they served Huckleberry Ice Cream, but our Vanilla or Pistachio Almond was good enough. JT Basque is family generation owned, and we certainly felt welcome and well taken care of. The rustic decor was also cool, as was the happy energy in the dining room. Why is this THE ONE when it comes to Basque dining? Well... It's steeped in history in a way you can feel from the moment you step onto the wooden sidewalk out front. You'll see it on the walls, hear it in the conversations, and taste it in the food. This is simply a special place. You'll feel truly at home, and that's because the same family has operated it for countless generations, passing down legendary hospitality like a family heirloom. From friendly greetings in the "lobby" to the homey vibes and warm servers, you'll love every moment. Doesn't hurt that the food is delicious and plentiful. Everything is made from scratch with a lot of love, and each dish is huge and hearty. Lamb chops and lamb shoulder steaks are always A+ but be sure to order the desired temp because they don't always ask. Steaks are solid too. Same tip as above. And for all three, don't forget to get them smothered in whole cloves of roasted garlic. Personally I usually can't say no to sweetbreads at a Basque spot, and that's the case here as well. They're served in a rich, garlicky and well seasoned gravy, studded with red and green peppers and whole cloves of garlic. It's the perfect dish to use up the extra bread because you won't want to leave a drop. Make sure you bring a couple bucks to leave up on the ceiling! The bartenders can show you how to make em stick. And of course, have a picon punch!

We loved this place so much that we were impressed with ourselves the day that we did NOT make a stop by this bar, and perhaps we even stopped by twice if eating in Genoa. You walk in (by the way, look like a regular, and PUSH the very low doorknob, not pull like I did initially) and immediately know it is dripping with history, divey-ness, and awesomeness. The crowd comes in waves, as it is a popular drop-in for people coming through town as well as many very welcoming and friendly locals. Actually, I want to say again how awesome the regulars were. Not sure how I would feel if constant tourist dropped in my homestead, but everyone we talked to who was local was awesome and inviting. The bar had an IPA for me. They have a pool table. They have a jukebox (which defaulted to glam rock when we were there, so I LOVED that). They have cool merch. They have some awesome stuff on walls and ceiling. They have some fantastic mixed drinks, including one of the better Bloody Mary's my wife has had as well as a unique, tasty hot drink (Hot Buttered Buccaneer Drink). They have a spacious outdoor area. They don't have food, but we had a burger and burger salad (wife) from the food truck there, and it was stellar. The fries were great too. Back to the bar though. And, every bartender who served us during the week gave us friendly, efficient, perfect service. Once we realized that South Tahoe was irritatingly tourist overpopulated at this time of year, we decided to attend this cool candle-lighting tradition they did on NYE there instead of figuring out logistics over the pass. The event was SOOOO cool, and they even had a fun band later that night that they somehow packed into the jukebox corner. Hope I don't forget anyone. Whether you get Syd, Gabby, Candi, Dee, Carrie, or Ginger (the only one I didn't meet personally), you will love your experience here. They were all rock stars during our visits. I can't say enough good things about this bar, it really made "our South Tahoe trip," and you should swing by if in the area. I highly recommend this place, and see you there (the next time we are in the area)...
