Makchang Dodook Korean BBQ - Beef Brisket

Makchang Dodook Korean BBQ

My friend grew up in Nova, and his favorite KBBQ is Makchang Dodook. He says it's the best for AYCE…read morein terms of quality and price. I've never heard of this spot before, and you typically will not find me in Springfield. However, a few of us made lunch plans this past Good Friday to take advantage of the $29.99 AYCE weekday lunch pricing. We got three rounds of beef brisket (chadol), one thin & thick pork belly (samgyupsal) each, and half an order of large intestine (daechang). The chadol was a little too fatty than I'd like, but it was high quality and comparable to non-AYCE options like Meokja Meokja. I didn't love the thin samgyupsal as much, but the thick version was so meaty and juicy. The intestines were a fatty treat, and I was good with just a couple bites. We had to ask for ssamjang and sesame oil for sauces, which they were generous with giving. Our server was pretty attentive, but we thought it was weird that he cooked the thin samgyupsal and the beef brisket at the same time. As for sides, we asked for lots of them (sadly our corn cheese never came). The fermented soybean stew was strong, but a bit too salty at the end. The egg bomb was fluffy and delicious. They also have ramen (aka shin ramen) which we enjoyed by adding several pieces of chadol and letting it soak in there to get that deep meaty flavor. I enjoyed the kimchi throughout the meal, which was the perfect "not quite fresh, but still crunchy" texture. Overall, we ate to our heart's content. I definitely would be back for more chadol, thick samgypsal, and a bit of daechang in the future. The $30 pricing is a steal for the amount of food we got, but I'd hesitate to pay for the $40 dinner price. I don't eat enough at AYCE spots to get my money's worth, so I would rather spend that $40 at a non-AYCE spot for higher quality cuts like galbi and rib tips.

Easily some of the best I've had in the area in a long time, and they set the bar high going into the meal. Once we got to the meat, though, it was a little underwhelming. The all you can eat selection was limited, and a lot of the flavors leaned sweet. We were hoping for more savory, classic Korean BBQ flavors. The sauces were fine, but nothing that really stood out. If we came back, we would definitely add on the ribeye or galbi instead of sticking strictly to the all you can eat option. Service was great and attentive, and the atmosphere is solid for the Springfield area. That said, our hood vent almost came off mid grill, which definitely took away from the experience. Overall, a strong start with great banchan and service, but the BBQ itself did not quite deliver.

The actual restaurant feels massive but decorated in a rustic way. I want to give a huge shout out to Alicia. She is such a knowledgeable, approachable, and receptive server. She was on top of refilling drinks, making sure we weren't left alone for too long when we were waiting for our food to come, and just had an overall amazing energy. While we really enjoy all of the servers we've had at Mikes, Alicia takes the cake. If there's any way to provide her with recognition, I would highly vouch for it. She could sell me anything on that menu with that kind of personality! Thank you, Alicia! I'm going to make sure we try to get seated at your table again.

I visited Mike's American after coming across it on Resy and was able to get a same-day reservation…read morefor two on Easter Sunday. As expected, it was busy, but the restaurant does have a fairly large parking lot which made arrival easier. The setup was interesting. After checking in downstairs, I was given a ticket and directed upstairs for seating. I took the elevator, which offered a clear view of the kitchen below as it ascended... definitely a unique touch. Upstairs, another host staff guided us to our table. The space had a lively feel, roaring with chatter from customers, and I could see parts of the kitchen where food was being prepared over an open flame, which added to the overall atmosphere. For the food, we started with the calamari. It was cooked well and had a nice texture, especially paired with the crispy onion shoestrings, which added a good crunch and flavor. It was served over a lobster sauce, although the lobster flavor wasn't very noticeable. The main issue was the salt level... it was quite heavy! I did enjoy it overall, but I would only recommend it to someone who doesn't have to watch their sodium intake. For entrées, I ordered the steak cooked medium with broccolini. The dish automatically comes with mashed potatoes, and while I was able to substitute the salad for broccolini, there didn't seem to be flexibility with the potatoes. After tasting the mashed potatoes, I wish I was offered to substitute it as it tasted like the brown box we grew up on where you just added water. When the food came out, the steak was closer to medium-well or well done rather than medium, and both the mashed potatoes and broccolini were a bit cold. I chose not to send it back since we waited but it did affect the overall experience. My guest ordered the ribs with fries and coleslaw. The ribs were well-prepared--tender with a clean pull off the bone--and were probably the highlight of the meal. The fries were also very good and came out hot. The coleslaw wasn't as well received, described as having too many of the tougher parts of the cabbage. Overall, the experience had some positives, especially in terms of atmosphere and certain menu items like the ribs and fries. While I did enjoy parts of the meal, it's not somewhere I would personally return to, but it may be worth trying once to form your own opinion.

Smoke Datt is back in the building. 1 Star = It's Not Good 2 Stars = Something's Missing 3 Stars = It's Ok 4 Stars = It's Good 5 Stars = it's Bangin! There's one permanent BBQ place and 2 pop-up caterers on rotation/schedule. I'm feeling sluggish, BBQ is the last thing I want. But then the memories of my first Smoke Datt rib returns. It looked dry, but on that day I wanted BBQ, so dry or not I'm Fat Guy from the Spy Who Shagged Me. It was like yesterday when i went in for that bite but OH! Meat falling, tongue rejoicing. Teeth! Be gentle. This bone may look like bark (I'm exaggerating the appearance) but there was no bite. A picture of Smoke Datt may show up in your App Store while looking for something else because it's Tender. It was good, somebody SMOKED DATT with prejudice towards swine. What that pig do to you?!? Fast forward, I don't want bbq because I'm already tired. Ok I give in. 3 bones, My Momma's baked Mac & Cheese (yeah, I know where that recipe came from j/k), Cole Slaw, (I usually get the baked beans) and a Diet Coke. Why diet? I like Diet. Was I tired afterwards? YES! Any regrets? Nope! Would I do it again? See you all next week because Smoke Datt was BANGIN on my taste buds singing baby come back and the meal wasn't even over. I am critic. Oh, 1 more thing. Eat a bone without sauce. True BBQ. Sorry No pictures, next time I'll take pictures before devouring, and update this post with the pics. ------ I went back. And today, It was hot outside and tropical smoothie was in my mind. What?!? Smoke Datt is back. Ok, let me just get the ribs a la cart to post the pics I promised. I just want the ribs. She smiles and goes in her tiny voice "you don't want any macaroni and cheese?" I go "Nawww," she ask "you sure?".... Give it to me! . You KNOW I want some of THAT........BAKED MAC & CHEESE. "You can get another side".....well it is just $1 more. Ok ok, I haven't tried the green beans. Corn bread please. Paid in disgrace . Ok, I was super busy so I didn't get to my food for 3 hours. Warmed it up and was going to go down stairs to a table. Food smells great. Let me just....before I get to the stairs.....taste this. Oh.....OH. This window seal is just fine . Who needs a chair? Ribs- I don't know what I was on when last time I said that the ribs looked dry. Look at the PICS......Juicy! Why is it so Smokey good. Like seriously, this is what Dave, Mission, Myron Mixon's Pitmaster, and yo Daddy call The End of their manhood. Just close your stores. The second someone backs DATT with some funds. It's OVER. Let the right person get a hold of one of these ribs and watch the meat fall off before he raises it to his mouth. The Mac - Music was playin "Retuuurn of, the Mac!" My life of Mac and Cheese flashed before my eyes. Big bad Wolf BBQ, Rocklands, Famous Dave's, Mission, Chuck Fil A, Myron Mixon's Pitmaster, Sweet fire Donna's (with her burnt ends) my mom's, and my grandma's (I swear my thumbs tripped and this is a typo if someone tells her) for the record, if I ever gave any of those places a 5, I'm sorry, I take it back. There Good - 4 stars at best. The Green Beens - I only got the green bean's because I had a taste for corn bread. I have nothing to say. Just one question. Why are these green beans so GOOD!?! What did you what did you what did you PUT in here? Nooo, green beans don't taste like this. Seasoned perfectly. Not salty, SEASONED. Corn Bread - Mannn, the consistency wasn't like cornbread: it was like corn cake lol. But taste like cornbread, but better. It's like the change in texture just did something for my life. I may have just been extra.....but YOU weren't on that window ledge in the hallway, happy as can be while Colonels, Generals and Secretary's of Defense are walking by, and I'm just nam nam nam trying to hide my face. DATT is Bangin! I am critic

Dining with my friend on Lebanese cuisine was a delightful culinary adventure filled with surprises…read moreand delights. Moussaka: A classic Lebanese dish. Eggplant and hummus were simmered until soft and flavorful, with a subtle smoky aroma. The addition of mint leaves enhanced the flavor. Bone Marrow: Beef tartare with bone marrow and pomegranate seeds--how interesting! The first two provided a rich, fatty texture and intense aroma, while the latter burst in your mouth occasionally, juicy, tangy, and refreshing. Brussels Sprouts: Brussels sprouts with grapes, walnuts, fig jam, and mint yogurt--a whimsical yet magical combination... The Brussels sprouts offered a fresh, vegetal aroma and a slightly roasted aroma; the walnuts provided a nutty richness and crunch; the fruit provided a fresh sweet and sour taste and plenty of juice; and the yogurt acted as a binder between the flavors while adding a touch of minty coolness. Duck Shawarma: My friend and I thought: ...Peking duck? The skin was soft, the meat tender, not gamey, with a subtle smoky flavor; the fig and lemon sauce was sweet and refreshing; the small pita pillows held the meat securely, better than the lettuce what might have been too cold. Lamb Stuffed Grape Leaves: Black rice was wrapped in grape leaves and simmered with minced lamb. The rice absorbed the fragrance of the grape leaves, similar to lotus leaves (my friend and I thought: lamb version of sticky rice chicken糯米雞...?). The lamb, however, was served separately at the bottom of the pot and didn't absorb much flavor; overall, it was intensely sour. In short, this dish was a bit oddly designed, and it was the only one we didn't finish because the sourness was unbearable. Pita Bread: The bread was thin yet chewy, with a rough, slightly powdery surface, making it substantial and satisfying. I especially loved the "everything wrapped in a big pancake" style! This restaurant is located on the wharf near the Potomac River and boasts beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows. The spring sunlight streamed in softly.
