I've lived in Providence for over 6 years now and thought I had tried all the Indian food in the area (India, Rasoi, Kabob & Curry, etc). Ended up finding this place a couple weeks ago and I have to say it is honestly among the best, although you might miss it as it is pretty small! Although the interior has just a few tables and lacks the ambience of some of the larger restaurants in the area, going strictly by the quality and taste of the food, I think it is definitely a contender for my favorite Indian food in the city. The curries are fantastic, and (as someone who absolutely loves naan) I have to say the naan was flawlessly done - perfect texture and great for dipping in the curry sauce. Had a better experience last time I was here. Usually good for some authentic Indian. Last time I was there all the dishes were on the very salty side. Ordered an assortment of dishes. They'll come with either naan or rice. Got the lamb curry, Tikka masala, butter chicken, and saag along with the garlic naan. We ordered two lamb curries but they brought another one that sounded very similar. That was actually the best dish we had from a meat standpoint (not necessarily a flavor standpoint - it was all very salty). The naan was very good. Specifically the garlic naan which costs 40 cents more than the regular naan. Both were good. Got the mango lassi as well which I enjoyed. Thicker than past lassis but was good. read more

This place is the best South Asian food for its price point. I can not think of another south Asian restaurant that delivers delicious food & the homey feeling. This place is real comfort food. My family and I order from here at least once a week. FOOD (8/10) Always consistently delicious. SERVICE (7/10) They're good. Kids could use some proper training but then again, it adds to the homey vibe. CLEANLINESS (5/10) Could be better. 100% order from here. The biryani is the best thing in the menu. Chicken (bone in) & the beef are delicious. I would stay away from the samosas though. They always tent to taste like they're a few days old. read more

The best! NJS is our go-to India spot. We usually do takeout since we live in the area but if you do eat in it is BYOB and it's very much a no frills place. Everything is good. Dal curry, paneer Marsala, pakoras (try and get them on a day when they just made them) veggie curry, Navarattan Korma.... I could go on. If you get takeout the usually won't heat up your appetizers so you need to do that at home. read more

This is hands down on of the hidden gems of providence. It is easily missed as it looks unassuming passing by, but if you take the time to stop it will be worth it. Their curry and Naan are delicious, and you can't beat the prices. I have never had an order that's taken over 20 minutes to be prepared. It's unassuming but completely worth your time! It was unfortunately not the best Indian food I've had, but they get a star back for having exceptional service. I brought my dog and the server (who you could tell was the owner) brought out a takeout container full of water for her. I specifically told the staff that I have a nut allergy and they ended giving me Curry Dosa that has a coconut chutney made with CASHEWS, later I got really sick back home and threw up so bad. We have been going to NJS for 20 years. It never disappoints: simply presented but amazingly complicated dishes and bread are super tasty and reasonably prices. I would recommend chicken briani, masala dosa, shrimp dopiasa, tofu tika masala. I would not recommend kofta. But really most of the dishes are amazing and I tried almost all of them. And, I didn't mention: BYOB! Homey, quiet atmosphere, never crowded, accessible with a ramp, open most of the days, family owned and served. Also they have a sweet counter which sells kaju katli and jalebi along with some Bengali sweets. staff is really prompt and friendly .The place is overlooked as it is small tucked one with some outdoor seating. The food: So food is five-stars. The Indian food is extremely tasty - I highly recommend the biryanis. The flavor is incredible, the portion size is massive, and they add all the nuts and toppings just like my mom would! I love both the lamb and chicken biryani, and both meats are so tender and soft. The butter chicken is also delicious, very watery but still tasty. I also love their chicken tikki! I don't recommend the butter naan (its pretty much plain!) but definitely recommend the garlic. The service: Now service on the other hand is probably three-stars. The waiters don't always know what we ordered/what are questions are. The turnaround time is reasonable though, and the the did fill our waters without being asked. The ambiance: The decor and seating are simple, but functional. Some larger tables and other two-seaters. There's a patio outside that's also lovely in the summer. Nothing too fancy, but does the job! The food here is good but the service was really unfortunate! We ordered the chicken biriyani, palak paneer, ginger garlic naan, veggie samosas. They were out of the samosas this time but that's okay! The honey in the naan had a special floral essence to it, which was really unexpected but great. Chicken biriyani was so flavorful we kept eating bites after we were already stuffed. For service, I understand that there are only two servers but some things were more unusual: they forgot one of the bottled we ordered and gave it to is when the meal was almost over when we asked about it and they said "it was coming". They also took one of our small tables with food on it away to give to another table of two for their food, and forced us to cram our food on the table instead - what made them more special?? We ordered pretty much the same amount of food! They didn't ask!! That was so weird... Really didn't appreciate that - it made us feel inferior. read more

We were driving back home to Connecticut from cape cod and stumbled upon this place. It's a nice cozy place with great snacks and food. We tried the khasta kachori, bhindi masala, spinach chicken and the chappatis. We loved the spinach chicken and the fresh fluffy chappatis. We also packed a box of jalebis and they were delicious. I've always loved South Asian cuisine, but it wasn't until I ate the tikka masala at Not Just Snacks that I realized how much I had been missing. That was probably in 2013. Not Just Snacks has since become the standard by which I judge a biryani, a curry, a masala. Everything they cook has soul and flavor. Not only that, but the Bengali family that runs the restaurant, headed by Mr. Islam, is genuine, kind, and loving. Mr. Islam and his family and other employees at the restaurant knew my name and would ask how I was doing, how my family (in NY) was doing. Hands down one of the best parts of Rhode Island and my favorite South Asian restaurant. If you've never known the pleasures of a good biryani, come try Not Just Snacks. I dare you not to fall in love with the hand painting mural, the delightful aroma, and the warmth of the family that runs this place. It was my home away from home. Comfort food 100%. Yum-yum-yum-yum-yum. I had a hankering for good Indian food & this place did not disappoint. I've gotta say that I completely dug this dive. From the Pani Puri to the Idli to the Khasta Kachori to the Boneless Palak Chicken, I was in absolute culinary heaven. The Pani Puri was definitely the most fun to eat - you knock a little hole into the "puff," fill with mashed chickpeas & tamarind chutney, & chow down. One word of caution, however: although the menu states that the Khasta Kachori is gluten-free, I noticed upon leaving that the display states that they are made of wheat. Please be warned. If, for any reason, I find myself in Providence, RI again, I will be sure to make a special trip to this place. I was very pleased with the prices & the service cannot be beat. So my friends and I went there for Eid dinner. I got the pani puri which was okay, and got my mutton biriyani to go (because I wasn't very hungry). That was a disaster! The biriyani was burnt, had no meat or potato and tasted bad! Needless to say my Eid dinner was ruined! When I called to report it, they admitted that they messed up the order, and said they'd make a new batch. But I don't live close enough to go pick it up. So they should just process the refund. They said they need the card to process the refund. The first person I spoke to on the phone was nice but the second person was not very nice. Tipped off to this place by a review here, I was traveling to Providence last weekend and decided I'd check it out. I went with a friend who said he loved the place - didn't know he used to come here 2 or 3 times a week! He made some suggestions, including the vegetable samosa which was different from others I have had; primarily, it had a kick that is generally lacking in others. Served with cilantro chutney and tamarind sauce, it was a perfect appetizer before the main course. I had the chicken tikka masala for my main meal - it was super. My dining compadre had a goat dish, not quite a curry but I can't recall the name exactly. Since we picked naan as our accompaniment, we didn't get to see the sandcastle-rice effect as described by others here. Bummer. The atmosphere wasn't quite as "hole in the wall" as others describe - I would say more "unpretentious". My only sadness to report is that I don't live anywhere near this place so I'll have to make another pilgrimage next year and fill up then. read more

This is so far and by far my favorite vindaloo in the area. It's rather thin and soupy, which makes it unusual, but the flavor is incredible. As always, I ask for it extra-spicy, and they have always been happy to oblige me. Many places in the New England area will not make vindaloo very spicy even when I ask. I assume this is due to them being familiar to catering to the generally spice-sensitive New England palate. Try finding a decent hot sauce in any local grocery store and you'll see what I mean. Anyway, there's nothing else I can say about this vindaloo. I have not found better anywhere in the new england area to date, but rest assured that if I do, I'll let you know. Got try it! read more

If you like good food that is cooked fresh by somebody who actually gives a damn. This is the only place to go. This family run business is a model that produces the finest quality with the best fit for someone who enjoys wonderful spicing and delicate flavors with the freshest ingredients. If you want hollow pretentiousness, I would say you might choose to go elsewhere. But you will be sadly mistaken. If you want to eat food delivered from the heart of a family of people who are deserving of the money, because they work hard for it and do a great job, and because they deliver superior quality with kindness and joy, then this is the place. One of my fave Indian places in providence.. you can tell the ingredients are fresh and that they chef/owner puts a lot of love into their cooking. With that, WOW is it spicy cooking! I don't have a delicate pallet at all, but you better order one degree of spice lower than what you typically would. Butter chicken was SO good-- and most importantly, every item I purchased and took home, was able to be reheated and it's like I never left the restaurant! That's kind of remarkable in my opinion. Service is only decent, at best. It's a nice place to come for dinner with friends but I think the servers get a tad stressed when you come with more than 4 people. Check this place out. read more

I wandered in here after walking 5 miles on a 95 degree day in search of ice cream after realizing that Three Sisters was closed. Their awning advertises ice cream, and sure enough, they have a ton of different flavors of kulfi (Indian ice cream) for only $1.50 (cup or pop). I only had my credit card with me, so I asked how much their credit card minimum is. (It's $10.) Well, I must have looked really sweaty, because the woman behind the counter told me to just take the kulfi for free! I refused, but then the owner came over and also insisted that I have it and that I could pay them back later if I wanted. Based on this heartwarming experience, I will definitely be back to try the awesome variety of sweet and savory authentic Indian snacks! And the kulfi is really good too... try the kesar pista (pistachio and saffron) flavor! Please give these kind, generous people your business! I know I will next time when I have cash :) read more
