A friend of mine introduced my partner and I to Not Just Snacks a few summers ago and we've been making this mom and pop restaurant our spot for Indian food. The prices are reasonable, so are the portions and the flavors always kick in the best ways! If you're looking for a no-frills, cozy and delicious place to try, I say don't skip out on Not Just Snacks. Our favorite appetizers are hands down the pani puri, honey and ginger naan, tandoori and beef kebab. The pani puri is an interactive experience, where you hollow out the shells and fill them up with ground chickpeas and spicy sauce - very flavorful and fun! The honey and ginger naan is great to cut down on spicy dishes but eating it alone is dangerous - it's too dang good! I loved the tandoori chicken, a super flavorful thigh w/crispy skin. The beef kebab was just as tasty, packed with all kinds of spices that make it a winner in my book. Now, that was just the apps! Quite consistently, I always always always order the lamb (or beef) vindaloo. I have to warn you that this dish is certainly not for the weak - spice lovers only! The tender chunks of meat pair quite well in the pool of spice, potatoes and my favorite, chilis. There is an option to pair the vindaloo with rice or naan, with my heart devoted to the former. To put in perspective how spicy the lamb vindaloo is, you'll likely need refills upon refills of water. Nonetheless, if you can REALLY handle heat, the vindaloo is made for you. I alter between lamb and beef, depending on the mood. This time around I tried the shrimp dopiaza and wheat roti. The shrimp entree was quite sweet, with 5 shrimps total. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of anything wheat, hence the roti ranked lower on my scale. Overall, Not Just Snacks holds a special place in my heart (and stomach). After hearing many great things about Not Just Snacks, it was time to take a trip for some Friday night takeout! It was very seamless to order takeout via phone call. I order boneless chicken biryani and garlic naan, both of which were delicious and hit the spot. They were the perfect in combination with a glass of wine and a movie to ring in the weekend! In comparison to other Indian restaurants nearby, Not Just Snacks was also fairly inexpensive for about two servings worth of food. While I decided to do takeout, there were many people dining outside and inside when I arrived. Not Just Snacks is a great place to bring college mates and first dates. Cheap, tasty, and authentic, you can't go wrong. One of my friends from India recommended this place first and had our big group try pani puri. It is a light chickpea appetizer that is very easy to share. Since then, I've tried a lot of their menu and have many highlights. I love their beef kebab, and the best portions go to the biryani. I am a sucker for spice, so I had to try their vindaloo. I love their lamb, and my girlfriend always grabs the beef. The portions are great, especially for the price, and don't worry! They bring rice out in a to-go container so you have lunch the next day. Their normal curry could be a little spicy, so go for the tikka masala or biryani if you can't handle spice. If you need something to fight the spice, they got you covered too. Their mango lassi is good, but we always get the honey & ginger naan to settle the kick. Whenever we finish up, the owner always stops by and is very nice. This place is my favorite! Returned after a while of not visiting and it was just as good as always and it is so nice to be remembered when I walk in. I had a veg samosa - with the tastiest little dip dips. Then the chicken korma and some garlic naan. This isn't going to be the best Indian food you've ever had ... nor will it be the best atmosphere to eat it in. This reminds me of the little roadside 'snack bars' in France and Spain. It's simple home-style cooking at reasonable prices with zero frills or atmosphere. The menu is pretty varied and things seem to be homemade. I had the chicken tikka masala (of course) ... which was good. The sauce was a tad spicy ... I like that the curries here are actually served spicy ... most Indian restaurants see an American eating there and dull down the spice level considerably. Give me the heat, baby! The sauce was creamier/lighter in color than most restaurants I've seen ... it was a very light pink vs. dark orange. It wasn't lacking any of the taste of the darker sauces though. The chicken chunks were okay ... def. not the best I've had. While they weren't rubbery or crunchy, they didn't have that beautiful orange colour which is usually indicative of true tandoori cooking. The rice was done well ... based on this, I could see them doing a Byurani very well. They have a dessert and snacks case for grab and go ... they have indoor tables that resemble a pizza parlour and then outdoor tables with tiny chairs. The food here is served in metal containers and plates, which leave a little bit of a metallic flavour and seem a bit like something you'd find in a science lab vs. a restaurant. The prices are good ... Chicken tikka masala was about $14, after tax and I left full. Portion wasn't enormous but also not small. Compared to Rassoi and India, the atmosphere is dumpy but you'll save $5 - $7 per entree and it's just as good. It tastes more like home cooking than restaurant cooking, which in my book is a good thing. I'd come back for a quick fix of Indian food. Probably wouldn't take anyone here who cared about atmosphere in any way. read more

My original review was 5 stars but I've since had to edit. My family has been coming here for so many years, the entire staff knows us by name. They have some of the best prices on authentic Indian food in the state. The atmosphere is also very homey. Recently, we noticed a sign in the window (see picture) about their opposition to accessible infrastructure. My family and I partially commute by walking and biking, but we instead drive to Hope as it's dangerous there. This sign made us feel very unwelcome and feels like they don't care about us. Their food is so tasty!!! We got the palak paneer, chicken curry, and baingan bharta. Each came with either rice or naan, and we chose garlic, butter, and normal naan. We also ordered mango lassi. The palak paneer was tasty and creamy. The chicken curry was delicious, with deep and complex flavor. I would definitely order this again. My favorite was the baingan bharta. It has a rich smoky flavor and it's so well spiced. I would highly recommend getting the naan - the garlic naan was my favorite! I think it also cilantro on it and it's amazing. The mango lassi was refreshing, and not too sweet. Hit the spot on a hot day! The lassi was also nice to counter balance the baingan bharta, which is on the spicy side. And of course I ordered Garlic Naan and Papadum. I went to pick up my order however, I got there wayyy to early (on my personal behalf) this gave me a chance to pick out a few apps from the display case while I waited. I kindly asked the gentlemen if he can throw the apps in the microwave for a few seconds as I would like to devour it in my car lol. I grabbed my apps and a lychee juice... for a moment or two- I was back in heaven on this gloomy rainy day. I didn't snap any photos before or after. I was ready for food war once I got home. The smell of each dish was fantastic! The lamb was tender, the veggies had a great crunch... the Chana Tikka was delicious- oddly enough it was meaty and filling. And lastly my sample of the Navarattan- OMG, the flavor on this dish is so delicious and complex, it's savory, it's sweet and spicy. The vibe is informal, got that down to earth small shop feel. Nothing fancy, but clean and pleasant. The service was fine; the waitress did not seem particularly friendly, but she was definitely attentive to our orders, gave us good recs, and got the job done. The food was very much okay. The flavors were all wonderful. It was the textures that were sub-par. My friend got a meat samosa that looked very crispy from the outside, but in actuality was too soft. Again the chicken biryani had excellent flavor. The spices were on point, but it had a VERY mushy texture. The vegetarian thali had a great flavor to the curry (I got the paneer tikka masala), but the rest of the sides are honestly a little unpleasant to eat. The pickled veggies were way too strong and could not be finished. The mango lassi was very yogurt-y but not bad. I love Indian food and love that this place is representing Indian cuisine in Providence, but I can't say that this will be my go to. Great flavors, but the textures left something to be said. My experience at Not Just Snacks wasn't just disappointing; it was dangerous. I ordered the lamb saag and told my server up front that I had a peanut and tree nut allergy. She assured me that my selection was allergen free, but after a few bites, my lips began to swell and my throat began to close. A member of my party removed my plate from the table, and alerted the staff that I was having an allergic reaction while I took some Benadryl from the nearby CVS to hold off the reaction, and we got ready to leave. The staff once again insisted there were no nuts in the dish. From that point on they would not even acknowledge me, no apology, not even eye contact when they came to the table and asked my friends how they wanted to split the bill. It's one thing to serve someone a dish they are allergic to, it's another to gaslight and ignore them while they have a medical emergency. It's a shame too, because the few bites I had were truly delicious, just not delicious enough to risk my life. read more
