Staff did not acknowledge me walking in or continuing to stand there waiting for several minutes. He finally decided to glance my way asking if I needed help (obviously) & called over a girl to assist. When I let her know I'm looking to drop in & I have prior experience she tells me "oh we're more of a beginners class or membership kind of studio so we don't really have anything for you..." Another women mentions they have a class offering but realizes it was the wrong date. I glance around at the completely empty studio & then she says "The only other thing is I have a class I'm teaching in...7 minutes & it's completely empty so you could attend that & just do what you want..." Why would you not lead with that? She tells me it'll be $110. I pass because I'm not paying an exorbitant price if this is the service I can expect from them. "Sorry we didn't have something for you." Sounded like you had something perfect for me but didn't want me to stay, so what on Earth do you mean?

I wanted to do something different and special with my mom, who is almost 80, incredibly active, full of spirit, and has worked hard her entire life. She had never really been in a setting where she could simply sit down, paint, and explore her creative side, so I wanted to surprise her with something new. While we were still in Vista, we briefly parked and I started looking up pottery-painting places closer to the LA County area. That is when I came across Clay Cafe. We were already beginning our drive back toward home, so I decided to take a chance on it even though it was still about 30 minutes from us. I'm so glad I did. This is a family-owned business run by a mother-and-daughters team who are artists themselves, and you can really feel the care they've put into the space. They were welcoming, helpful, patient, and genuinely kind from the moment we walked in. We picked out our pottery and ended up spending almost THREE HOURS painting! The time flew by because we were having such a great time together. There are plenty of paints, tools, and creative options, and the guidance they provide is wonderful without making you feel rushed. They also have a cafe next door with coffee, cookies, and other goodies. If you have a sweet tooth, definitely try the cookies--they are huge! We enjoyed iced coffee and a cappuccino while we were there. I will say that this isn't the cheapest pottery-painting experience, but I felt the quality, materials, tools, atmosphere, and assistance made it worth it. My shark piggy bank was around $60 and my mom chose a vase around $50, so with everything we spent roughly $130-$140 for the two of us, depending of course on what pottery you choose. After you finish painting, they glaze and fire your pieces. They took our contact information, and about two weeks later we received a text letting us know everything was ready. We picked up our finished pottery today and were SO happy with how it turned out. They welcome walk-ins, although I would recommend making a reservation, especially if you want to settle in and really enjoy the experience. Parking was also easy since they are in a small plaza shared with 7-Eleven. They also host fun events, including a plant bingo where you can apparently win plants, so definitely check their current schedule. For me, though, the best part was simply getting to sit across from my mom, paint together, laugh, talk, and watch her creative side come out. That memory alone was worth every penny. Wonderful family-owned business, wonderful people, and such a fun experience. We will absolutely be back. UPDATE: Thank you for your sweet message ! It was a beautiful memory and one I'll cherish! After painting, you'll come back in a week to pick up the piece after they glaze it. A group of five of us came for a fun girls' day and spent about two-ish hours painting and gabbing. The staff were so nice in giving us a mini-orientation and even helping us out when we made the dreaded paint mistake! It's a great spot for friends, kids, a date, or a solo outing if you want to be creative. They have a complimentary parking lot, otherwise, there's metered parking and free street parking in the neighborhoods across Wilshire. Tips: - You can see their current inventory online and they can order you a specific piece if you give them a month's heads up. - For words or numbers, bring your own stickers. Otherwise, you can purchase theirs and they have lace for sale too. - Check out their Instagram for inspiration! - For the non-artistic types, I highly recommend printing out a design you want in advance. When I raised concerns about communication, the response was not to acknowledge the experience but to repeatedly defend and cite policy. The emails were unnecessarily long, defensive, unprofessional, and patronizing. My concerns and request for a middle ground were met with condescending rhetorical questions and comparisons that completely missed the point. Look beneath the glossy branding and the environment feels cold, transactional, and sterile. To me, that's not a place that fosters creativity. A business can have firm policies while still treating customers with generosity and respect. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here.

Signed up for the Canvas beach scene resin workshop with a gf and thought we'd be doing a class style art project -- but we found out the workshop was a private class just for us which was surprisingly so nice! Sometimes you feel pressured when there's tons of people around doing awesome art next to you but this private session made us feel more comfortable that it'd just be us creating something unique. Immediately felt so relaxed when Julia and Dana took us under their wing and helped us create a special art piece we'll always treasure. They were so patient and kind and helpful. We don't think we would've had the type of turn out we did if it wasn't for their guidance. Julia especially guided us every step of the way and was so friendly. Do I think some additional instructions would have been more helpful to beginners like ourselves -- yes! But they certainly did offer as much help as we asked for when we were brainstorming ideas for the canvas and that made the experience well worth it in the end. The location was nestled inside a plaza and we did make several bad choices in directions causing us to walk in the completely wrong direction but we called the place and they helped send us their location on Google Maps so we could easily find them. Hint: it's in the plaza with Wushiland but it's tucked away near the Escapology escape room. Easy to park! There's a parking garage in the Paseo plaza and we got our parking validated for 90mins which made parking super cheap. I think we only paid $3 after the validation. After you finish your art piece, we were told to come back in about 2 days for pick up. This was awesome because normally art places have you go back in a week or longer so the quick turnaround was fantastic. Our session was about 90mins which I think is their longest workshop. They have so many different art projects you can do and several are walk-in friendly. We made a reservation on ClassBento which was super easy. They offer all the supplies including aprons. They let us bring in our boba drinks and water bottles. We made 12x12 canvases for about $80 each. They send plenty of email and text reminders before your class. Just give yourself time to park before the class but even though we were a few minutes late they still gave use plenty of time to work on our project. Not only did I love the resin workshop but seeing that they had so many other art projects offered I'm definitely going back with more friends to do more projects. Truly a beautiful studio! The people were fantastic and warm. The timing and pace of the class was great and easy to digest what to do next. I loved how hands on this project was and I think the art work we made was really beautiful in the end and we can't wait to pick up our art and hang them at home. If you're looking for a different type of artwork to make with a friend or loved ones -- this is it! You can't go wrong with any project here. This staff is so amazing and talented that you just feel like you can trust their every suggestion. Check this place out! You won't be sorry! You'll definitely leave saying how much fun you had.

I struggled to find another place to take in-person watercolor classes after I got what i could from the basics class. I found it here with Donna as the mentor. I drive 100 miles RT to take this 2.5 hr class. At first I was a bit concerned about the cost and the fact that the first painting is set my the teacher, however, given the professional art paints, brushes and paper, it is a bargain, even for a beginner. The first painting did take me about 8 or 9 sessions, but there are many techniques involved. I got instruction (often personalized to my needs), and was able to practice on 100% cotton paper before applying the paint to my painting. There is a maximum of 8 students in class. The techniques are not just basics but often involved and I have used them in the many paintings I have completed since that first painting. After the first painting, you can paint anything you want, and Donna will support you even if the subject is not optimal. She will truly help you make a great painting and will encourage you along when you have difficulty. Class is a fun experience with people of various backgrounds, including people with degrees in art. While I spend more time traveling to and from class, it is well worth it. I have attached some paintings I have done in this class, once I completed the first one.

The entire course covers just one painting which is done very slowly and must be done exactly as the instructor does. Step by excruciatingly slow step. I had explained in an email prior to enrolling and then again on the first day of class that I had a year's worth of watercolor experience. Donna should have told me at that time that the course wasn't for me. This was the biggest waste of money I've incurred in the five years I've been taking classes. I stopped going after the 4th class and never heard from the instructor. She was probably just glad that I didn't confront her and ask for a refund.
