I took a wax ring casting workshop where I got to design my own ring. It was challenging but lots of fun! The entire class consisted of step-by-step instructions on how to size, carve and etch a design on a wax mold. Once complete, you attach your name and contact info on a card so that it can be shipped to you once it has been cast into a brass (or silver) ring. You really learn what goes into designing a piece of jewelry- would definitely take this class again. Will have to remember to post a photo of the finished piece after I receive it! read more

I took the pressed flower candle making class. It was very easy to follow instructions, fun, and everyone's candle turned out lovely. You are given a kit that includes all the items you need to make the candle in class and for you to use at home. I knocked down one star bc I ended up paying a minimal fee ($2) for parking as the class went just a little over 2hrs which is the validation period. read more

This review is actually for the class offered through Makers Mess but hosted at ROW DTLA. Simply wanted to sign up for a class to teach me new strokes for Calligraphy. Ended up tracing some letters on a sheet of paper, leaving with no new skills other than how to hold a cheap nib pen. I hate giving reviews that aren't at least 4 stars, but if you are going to pay 50.00 for a class, it would be nice to leave with new knowledge. I could have bought a beautiful bottle of cab, put on youtube, and learned lettering in the comfort of my own home, avoiding an 8 dollar parking fee along the way. The instructor was sweet, however, this class taught me nothing at all. Perhaps this is because I already know the basics of lettering, however, there was really no instruction, other than tracing letters. This experience truly made me feel like I am in the wrong business. Class was full, no stress, and a beautiful location. Perhaps other classes would be beneficial. read more

I took my first Modern Calligraphy class taught by Makers Mess. I absolutely loved it! The place is small, but cozy. The instructor was super sweet and helpful throughout the whole experience. Here's a rough run down, Price: The class was only $46! I generally see classes for $150! It's affordable because it's taught by an employee of Makers Mess. On that note, if you do take a modern calligraphy here taught by a Guest instructor (not a Makers Mess employee), the price is $150. Also, if it's your first time, you get a 10% discount! Duration: 2 hrs. It went by so quickly! Materials: They provide all the materials you need! Alcohol?: The class I took was BYOB, do I brought a personal bottle of wine I bought at a nearby liquor store! Parking: Street parking! I came here at 6:45pm and there was a lot of street parking. Conclusion: If you're a beginner like me, I would recommend taking this modern calligraphy class when then offer it again! The instructor provides basic instructions and techniques on how to start writing in modern calligraphy. After 10 mins, we started practicing on our own and the instructor came around and helped if needed. Literally felt like 2 hrs went by like that. When I went back home, I bought all the materials from amazon, recommended by the instructor. Now to start practicing on my own! I took the Modern Embroidery class with Meg Rosko and had a wonderful time learning and creating my own design!!! All materials were provided and Meg was a lovely teacher with a gracious teaching style, answered all questions and patiently demonstrated all the basic stitches we needed to create our own design. The class was sold out and full and I met some lovely ladies sitting at my table during the 3 hour class. Finally booked a class here! In two hours, our instructors got each of us 20 students to produce a hexagonal concrete planter from scratch. Each were noticeably unique, everyone from what I could tell left pretty satisfied with their creations. Bonus points for the snacks and mimosas they had arranged for us to enjoy before class. I'm so glad I found this place on Yelp! I've been looking for a place to take art classes, and Makers Mess offers a variety of classes including watercolor, macramé, calligraphy, etc... I signed up for a monthly membership so I could try different classes and bring along a friend for a discount too. I went to a modern calligraphy class taught by Shannon. It was an informative and no-pressure class where we got to learn about writing with a nib pen, practice writing letters on various pieces of paper and get to know one another in a fun setting. I'm looking forward to trying different classes. I never knew this place existed. There's a bunch of shops along Hoover Street too that I want to check including the pet shop, MaeDay. We sent our five-year-old to the Mini Makers camp over the summer and she loved it. She came back with a ton of art projects and enjoyed every one of them. The instructors were very friendly and attentive. I think they also gave a lot of freedom to the kids to explore their own artistic interests. Each day, the kids went outside to eat lunch and dance or play with bubbles for some fresh air and sunshine. We felt comfortable sending our daughter since everyone wore masks and there were temperature checks at the door. We will definitely be coming back for the fall and winter camps. read more

Came across Makers Mess by accident when I was looking for 1-day craft events in Los Angeles. Turns out, they have two convenient locations at the Row and Silver Lake. Both locations have packed calendars with diverse craft projects and more. I ended up taking a modern calligraphy class at the Silver Lake location, hosted by Shelly Kim (known as "lettersbyshell" on IG). She has an impressive following on social media, not to mention workbooks and flashcards published. When reviewing the calendar, I noticed that a lot of well-known artists host classes at Makers Mess. The studio is small and intimate, allowing for a great atmosphere for arts & crafts. There is a lot of natural light (which I'm sure the owners took into great consideration). The studio is located on Hoover Street, a quaint little street w/ unique shops. There are no designated parking spots but plenty of street parking - not difficult to find compared to standard LA street parking wars. I am so glad I found this gem in Los Angeles. I will definitely check the calendar for more projects and hopefully bring my friends along. My favorite part - the ease of booking classes online! read more

I recently took a modern calligraphy class with one of the special instructors (Angelique). I have no experience with calligraphy at all so was curious what this 3 hour course would deliver. Well, as promised, I learned some of the basics of nibs, ink, pen holder thingy, and tips on what to get for future use. I didn't expect though that it would be so fun. First off, her music playlist was all Beyonce, Rihanna, 90's hot pop list and my ears were never so tenderly cared for. The instructor walked around to each student (there were 20 of us) after each lesson and gave tips on our techniques and answered questions along the way--SO helpful when you're questioning your own hand-eye coordination. This was my first class at Makers Mess and I know I'll return. This class cost EXTRA because of the special instructor, but I've tried Youtube DIY brush lettering (too hard) and this was just a much faster route to creating really pretty lettering. **Because parking ALWAYS matters, I found easy free street parking on a Sunday (even with a heavy brunch crowd in the local neighborhood). read more

Makers Mess is a fantastic place to learn any sort of craft you like! Forget the same old wine and paint. Here you can do macrame, block printing, felted soaps (my most recent workshop), calligraphy and more! They do birthday parties and corporate events too. If you go to their Silverlake location on Hoover, there are a couple cute shops nearby, a coffee shop and a corner store that is way nicer than you would expect it to be (like fresh baked bread and healthy groceries nice). I bought a couple craft beers before class because they're BYOB and people usually bring wine. It's fun meeting other people who enjoy crafting and it's a great way to unwind and create something awesome and handmade. I plan on gifting my felted soaps to each of my parents as part of their gifts for their upcoming birthdays! Honestly I gift a lot of the things I make at Makers Mess, haha. I wish I could hold onto them all but people always appreciate handmade items so much (parents especially) that I know how happy it makes them receiving my art.
