It is NOT a lecture but instead is a super fun hands on class where you get just the right amount of attention. My S.O. has always wanted art lessons since he was a kid, but for various reasons has never gotten around to taking any. I suggested to him last year that maybe it was time for us to look into getting him a formal teacher who could help him realize his childhood dream. No classes, S.O. pleaded, so we had to find someone willing to give him private lessons so that he could work on his own and at his own pace. We thoroughly searched through Yelp, sent emails to independent teachers, and phoned up schools to see who's out there and hopefully get a sense of who might be the best fit. Unfortunately, during early interviews, it quickly occurred to us that 1. private adult lessons seem to be an undesirable request to make of several highly recommended instructors who, I'm guessing, stand to make more money offering group sessions, and that 2. established schools seem mainly interested in soliciting callers into tuition package commitments and material fees. Just when we were beginning to assume the worst about L.A.'s art education industry, I exchanged a series of short, sweet and simple emails with Ann Bridges who offered my husband a terrifically reasonable rate, along with a friendly invitation to drop by for a meeting and first lesson after one of her regularly scheduled classes. I re-read the yelps for Ann, then decided to end our search right there because I intuitively felt that she was "the one." After meeting her for the first time, S.O. fully agreed! Since then, Ann has given my husband many months of individual instruction from her inspiring 14th floor studio atop an old office building on the northeast corner of Wilshire and St. Andrews. I enjoyed the Into to Acrylics class. She knows how to keep it fun, while you learn a little at the same time. I've taken at least a half dozen beginner paint classes. Usually paint/ party type where they help you make a pretty picture, but you don't really learn how to paint on your own. Ann's class was more of an instructor based that teaches how to painting fundamentals. I found this to be more valuable and look forward to taking more classes. Quick tip: You are allowed to bring wine, but don't serve yourself in red solo cups or you may accidentally drink your paint water! read more

Using complementary colors to create shadows really made more sense than using gray, which up until now is what I had used for shadows. I bought a groupon to Ann's art studio for a painting class for two because I was taking this girl on a date and wanted her to think I was creative to compensate for my lackluster personality. Ann was such a sweet woman, who really cared about teaching art and excelled at being patient and gave clear instructions. The fruit I was painting ended up looking like a few oddly colored, dirty potatoes, but Ann made me feel like I was painting the next Mona Lisa. I discovered Ann's studio from a flyer at Blick and now believe it's the best thing I have ever gotten from the store. As a new art student and over 40 Ann has been the best teacher you would want. She is knowledgeable on all aspects of art, very patient and provides guidance and direction in a positive manner. That is not to say she doesn't correct you when you head down a misguided path but even the slightly negative feedback serves a learning purpose. She seems to work well with both beginners and accomplished artists. The studio is at the top of a 14 story deco building on the west edge of Koreatown with lots of street parking. The space itself is light filled and while not huge it never seems crowded even with 6 or more students. Most classes range from 3-6 students of all ages and Ann always finds time to focus on each of us. It's a fun environment with a positive vibe. Oh and Ann is an amazing artist with painterly expressionist style that captures Los Angeles landscapes that I haven't seen elsewhere. read more

We had a wonderful experience with Ann's painting class through drawing, shading, painting a little mini masterpiece. I have no artistic ability and my husband drew back in his childhood days. My friends bought me one introduction to acrylics class. I went on a Wednesday night at 6:30 pm. I took the class with one other girl. As a teacher myself, I greatly appreciated the way Ann approached this class. She started by setting the foundations with color theory, then having us apply this on a color chart, and guided us in mixing colors. She is very hands on and provides direct instructions but also give you the freedom to move around the parameters she sets. She uses a lot of positive reinforcement too. Excellent teaching. There is a clear objective to the class: to be able to apply color theory to create light and shadow. I learned SO MUCH about the basics of using acrylic and the basic techniques painters use such as starting with an underpainting. This is truly a great foundational class!
