A group of four of us scheduled a class for two of our birthdays on November 7th. Our first class. It was so great. We loved the instruction, the experience, the cool studio, the shop they offered and the fun we had together. We put our names on a piece of paper under our pots and they told us they'd email us (technically just the one of us that made the group reservation) when they were ready in about 30 days. The email never came. It's now been exactly 60 days. And we called today and they said they have zero record of us and didn't even have a class that night AND they also said they didn't have our pots. All four of them. There were two other people we didn't know in the class and I'm wondering if they're having the same experience. We sent them the receipt of our class and payment and they agreed to give ONE of us a free class. We spent a pretty penny there that night as a birthday treat and this has been such a bummer way to end it. I'm disappointed in the lack organization and record keeping and REALLY disappointed in their customer service after the mistake was made. I don't recommend this spot anymore. I've taken two classes so far at Cobalt and Clay and they were both great! I took a one-time class with Corinne and the 4-week beginners class with Lisa. The one time class was a really fun date night! There were lots of options available for scheduling and it was a really good value with the price. Corinne was very helpful and approachable, I felt comfortable asking questions and would definitely take a class from her again! After that experience, I wanted more and signed up with a couple friends to take the 4-week beginning throwing class. As Lisa told us up front, it moves quickly, but you learn SO much along the way. You also get access to book open studio hours while you're in the class, and I cannot recommend that enough. I went in 2-3 times a week in addition to my class time the first couple weeks, and I felt like I got a lot more out of the course as a result. Lisa was a fantastic instructor--funny, down-to-earth, and really helpful. The class was small enough that she was able to help people individually with problems they were having and even extra stretch goals they wanted to achieve beyond what you typically make in the course. I would have signed up for the next 6-week course with her but it was already sold out! Overall, would definitely recommend both the one time and 4-week beginning classes at Cobalt and Clay. read more

I went to their intro pottery wheel class as someone with no pottery experience and had a great time. The class was a little large (which is why it's a 90-minute class) but the instructors are knowledgeable, there's plenty of room, and it's a good bit of fun. Fantastic experience, great value ($65pp). Keep in mind that it takes about three weeks to pick up your finished piece! read more

I took a 4 week introductory throwing class with Lisa and absolutely LOVED it. Going into this course, I was pretty nervous given this was my first time using the wheel, but Lisa is truly the best. She's sweet, funny, and arguably the most patient person in LA. I'd say what I appreciated most is how she starts with preliminary instruction for the whole class and then offers more individualized help for each student as needed. For example, I was REALLY struggling with trimming during the third class and felt like Lisa gave me extra attention to make sure I got the hang of it (and I did!!)--and on multiple occasions she'd stay over the allotted course time to make sure you finish whatever you wanted to get done. I enjoyed Lisa's class so much that I'm waiting for her 6 week class so I can take her again!! 100000% recommend this to anyone interested in trying out pottery read more

Yeah some major stress was had, but Nicole at Cobalt & Clay saved my booty. She was so nice, got back to me very quickly, especially considering how last minute my request was, & was very communicative. Even though my dumb dumb friends ran late, Nicole made sure we all got to finish our pieces. During the actual class, she was very good at explaining technique & made sure everyone's pieces looked correct throughout the process. Nani (I am so sorry if I am misspelling here) was also terrific! Nani made sure to assist with anything we needed & was so patient. The studio itself was welcoming, large & had more than enough space for 9 of us. The cost was also very affordable especially compared against other studios in LA. I came here as a beginner student with no throwing experience. The teachers are very patient. I took two five week wheel throwing courses and it was not easy for me. Nicole, the owner, likened wheel throwing to learning another language and I thought of that often when I made errors. I would like to return again soon. Yes, it is difficult for me but there's something very satisfying about making a little bowl that you can then use in the kitchen. It was a great outlet for me. I will say that when I went to the open hours, I felt like a fish out of water. Many of the people there are excellent ceramicists. However, be patient with yourself and give it a chance. I also took my young daughter to a couple of parents and me courses. We loved it. It was small enough to get good feedback from our instructor. Bought my friend and myself a one time throwing class for her birthday. It was on a Sunday from 10am-11:30am. Our instructor was Nick, and he was great!! It had been awhile since I used the wheel, and it was my friend's first time. Nick did a great job explaining each step, and telling us what we needed to pay attention to. He was very attentive in making sure each of us was on the right path, and gave advice if we needed to do more or less of something. Even though there were 7 of us, he was still able to keep a watchful eye and help us when we needed it. He also made sure everybody was caught up before explaining the next step, so you never feel rushed or like you were getting left behind. Since this was a one time class, we weren't able to paint the bowls that we made, but we did get to choose a glaze. Super excited for when we get them back. I would definitely want to invest in taking the 6-week course next time. Highly recommend giving this class a try if you've never used a wheel before. It could be a cute date, or even a fun family activity. Keep in mind that you do have to reserve a slot online in advance, and this class is limited to 10 at a time. It does get a little messy, and you do have to put in some work, so I would wear comfortable clothes that you care a little less about. But I also didn't have a problem with the clay not washing out. read more

Never did this before and we went for a friend's bday! We had a large group so half would go while the other half hung out. There's a large table so you can bring snacks and stuff. The instruction is wonderful and they're very patient. Pottery is an art, therefore, shut up and listen to instruction and be patient lol. It's physical so wear clothes you're ok with getting dirty (from the clay) and sweaty (gotta do a lot of pushing n moving). A+ recommend for creative party or if you just want to try a new craft! My pottery experience first started as a date night with the husband for a 2 hour wheel throwing session. I had such an awesome experience that I decided to take a 6 week throwing class. I had Nicole as an instructor and the classes was definitely fun and insightful. From kneading the clay, learning the proper technique of wheel throwing, trimming and finally glazing them, by the end of 6 weeks I felt a sense of pride and develop a sense of appreciation in my imperfect perfect pieces that I made. Hands down the best beginner pottery class in LA. I've taken beginner classes at other studios, and this class nails it. At first I was unsure about the pace of the class - it seemed slower than my other beginning studio classes. But I soon recognized the value in focusing on the essentials. For example, we spent 3 classes on centering alone, one of the basics of throwing on the wheel. Sam taught most of our classes - she's absolutely amazing. I learned so much from her, and she was always incredibly kind and patient. And what I learned from Nicole in 1 class was also wonderful (the other reviewers nail it!). It's a bit more of a time/money commitment compared to other beginner wheel classes in LA, but it's absolutely worth it. Run, don't walk! to sign up for the beginner's wheel series. read more

I am almost finished taking my 3rd wheel class here and felt a glowing review was long overdue. I've been looking for a new creative outlet for awhile, and decided to try this.
