I've been a member at Clay CA for a few yrs now - I've taken some private lessons and one off classes as well. I've even thrown my birthday party here, multiple times. These are some pieces I've made over the years. I LOVE this studio. The teachers are super knowledgeable. Clay CA is big on community and I've met some of my closest friends here. I want to sign up for more classes soon! :)

Clay is probably one of the best experiences of my 2022 this year. I signed up for one of the month-long classes this past month (April) with my best friend. Since it was so close to where I live...I thought "sure, why not?". The specific class I took was a weekly 2-hour class on Wednesdays, where we would learn how to throw, trim, add/carve, and glaze our pieces. About $200 upfront which I thought averaged out about $50 a class but the cool part is that you actually get 24/7 access to the studio after your first class. So, you can come any day, evening, or weekend to practice your throwing skills up until the 3rd week just to make sure there's enough time to fire and glaze all the pieces you have made. I wish I could have taken advantage of it more but things came up and I only got a chance to go in maybe 2-3 times outside of the class--which is still better than nothing. I really loved our instructor, Justin. He was clear and concise. He makes you feel at ease when it comes to throwing pieces on the wheel especially if it's your first time. It can look intimidating. Our class had about 9 people, so we didn't necessarily have one-on-one time with Justin but he definitely did his best to give everyone his attention as we were doing our own thing after he would show us the process. At times I did have a hard time keeping up because it seemed like it was an accelerated course, but I was able to get the hang of it after making my second piece. All the materials are all provided for you (wheel, clay, tools, bowls, water, etc) and there are a lot of people around the studio. It's a shared space for creatives, so you'll see other individuals (members) who come in to work on their pieces while the class is taking place. They're usually on the wheels on the other side and/or on the tables near the door. It's really neat to see all unique artwork and draw inspiration from others as well. Anyways, going back to the classes...The first week we learned the basics of how to throw the clay on the wheel, centering, and shaping the clay to form it to how you would want it to be. It's definitely a challenge--especially the first pieces, but also very calming when you see the wheel spin and touch the softness of the clay. I do think it does require a little bit of patience or else the pieces can easily tear if you're not too careful. We did have the luxury to throw at least two pieces and by the time it was towards the end of the class, Justin would let people stay longer to finish up their pieces. The 2nd week we learned how to trim. We would trim our pieces from the 1st class. This is the stage where we would trim the bottom to create a decorative bottom to elevate the piece. Justin would show us how to use the trimming tools and certain techniques to help trim away pieces of the bottom so that when we glaze it (4th week) it won't get stuck on the shelf. The 3rd class was more of how to attach pieces of clay onto a piece such as a handle for a cup or adding 3-dimensional looks on the surface. Or design elements such as carving the clay to create a textured look and so forth. The last class was understanding how the kiln and the process of glazing works. Similar to my chemistry class trying to learn how certain powders react with glazes and cones of a kiln to fire pieces are all worth learning and understanding for pottery. Especially if anyone is really interested in doing this part/full time. Once the fundamentals were taught, we would then get the pieces we created and glaze it to our liking. I haven't received my pieces just yet as we have to come back in another week or two for our finalized creations, but thought I'd leave a review before I see the final product. Overall, I really loved the classes. Justin was a wonderful instructor, my classmates were easy going, and I learned a lot from these four different classes. I would love to continue to do this, but apparently the studio no longer has enough space for new members (that's how popular it is)! It's a great space and allows creatives to freely do whatever they want (of course within the studio limits). I did have a few moments where I was like...what do I do since Justin wasn't in the studio the times I were there outside of class, but there were other people in the studio that were able to help. However, there was one individual who looked really annoyed (older gentleman) so I tried not to bother him, but that's the only negative thing I would have to point out. That's not on the studio though but more on the individual. Oh and also, it's kind of hard to find pieces that have yet been glazed. Since there's a lot of people and artists, there was a point where I couldn't find something I made. It could have possibly broke, or a possible pottery thief (I kid, I kid....) or it might have just disappeared.. Who knows... Other than that, I loved it every bit of the experience. Thanks again Clay! Can't wait to come back!!

Took the beginner wheel throwing class with my Fiance. Environment was super chill and easy felt super welcoming. Our instructor Michael was so great and so so helpful - was cracking jokes super fun. 100% recommend taking a class and taking a class from Michael.

I took a one-day class back in January. Although I really enjoyed the class and the instructor was great, the overall experience was very poor. First of all, they were overbooked due to an online booking system issue so a couple people ended up leaving voluntarily. If these two people hadn't left, we wouldn't have had enough wheels and probably had to share them. Second, their communication is horrible. I got an email saying my pieces were ready for pick up but my friend who took the class with me didn't get the notification at all even after the promised day. We attempted to contact them MULTIPLE times via phone, text and email over several days but they didn't get back to us until days later. And the main reason I'm leaving them a one-star review is because the pieces were not finished professionally. I was very upset that they didn't clean the bottom as the instructor said they would and one of my pieces was chipped. I was very disappointed by their lack of care and professionalism.

I have only attended 1 pottery throwing class before this so this is my review in comparison with my last experience. A group of friends and I came here to attend a class in Wheel Throwing 101. My understanding was that we would (hopefully) create a piece that we could take home. I want to first say that I would give the instructor a 5/5 stars because she was clear and concise with her instructions and helped us along the way. For some of us, it was the first time doing something like this and the instructor was patient and helped when needed. If I was writing the review on the instruction along, it would've been 5 stars. However, there wasn't too much information on the website on the details of what this class included besides the actual instruction. I think I was under the impression that we would throw our piece the day of the class and that it would be trimmed, fired, and glazed for us. It was fired and glazed which was communicated but now I'm forgetting if anyone said it would be trimmed and cleaned up (which was what they did in the last pottery class I attended). When I picked up the pieces a month later, the bottom base was how we left it at the end of the class. I wish someone would have told us that it wouldn't be trimmed for us because the pieces are just not that pretty with a rough sprawled out base. We also didn't have the tools necessary to clean up the base even if we wanted to. I attached some photos of what the pieces looked like. I think we are just disappointed since this was one of the more expensive classes compared to others I've seen online. Overall, I would just recommend anyone coming here for a class to be clear on what the expectations of what would happen to the piece after you leave the class. Location is in Chinatown, inside a plaza. Parking is decent, we came on a Saturday evening and there was street metered parking along the sides or a parking garage down the street.

What a unique experience! I had been wanting to try pottery for awhile, but finally made it happen when a friend asked me to join her for this excursion. For parking, they have metered parking or an underground lot that costs a bit more for your convenience. Everything was setup outside under a tent with 8 of us and a teacher. For two hours, we took the Wheel Throwing 101 class with Richard. Each class is $50 and includes all the materials needed including the clay. During this time, we took advantage of how many pots we were able to make after some instruction. I felt like I struggled more because I was left-handed, but my teacher really helped me so much. Truth be told, I was getting quite frustrated because working with clay is very difficult. I felt like I kept overworking my pieces, which ended up breaking. Although I left feeling upset that my pieces weren't perfectly uniformed, I realized later that it's the imperfections that actually make your pieces more special, so hope that helps you if it's your first time! At the end, the teacher helped you remove your pieces to a tray for drying. Then you clean all your materials up before choosing what type of glaze you want. I went for walnut, nebula, and a glossy white. If you're not sure, I'd recommend the walnut because it gives this gorgeous matte speckled look. I filled out my contact when the pieces are ready, which they estimated 3 weeks. This was the part where I was a bit concerned about because my friend's piece was done in 2 weeks, but I still didn't hear anything about mine after 4 weeks. Eventually, my friend picked up her pieces and found out mine was actually just done. I'm not sure if they took longer or never contacted me, but it took much longer than I hoped to receive the final piece. But I have to say that the wait was worth it. All of the pieces are absolutely gorgeous after the glaze. After seeing them, I definitely want to go back for more. If you're new like me and been wanting to try pottery, this is an amazing place to do it!

Love love love Clay! I've been going since April to develop a new hobby. My friend had recommended this place before COVID but I could never make my way here until after vaccination. At the time, they had outdoor wheel throwing and now everything has moved back indoors. I've only taken classes with Chloe, Ian, and Justin (who was subbing for Richard) so far and they're all great! If you're a beginner, I recommend a hands on class with Chloe since it's easy to rip your clay off the wheel. She's great with troubleshooting and advice for whenever you feel stuck on something. The studio is very friendly and anytime I've had a question about throwing, someone has been willing to help. The owners, Gabby and Justin, are amazing! Very understanding with any issue I've had with booking classes on the website and are very responsive to emails/phone calls/in person questions.

AMAZING CLASS. It was my very first time and my partner's first time working with clay and our pieces turned out wonderful. A big thank you to our instructor Michael who went through every step and helped everyone in the class to help create their own wonderful art piece. I totally recommend this studio if it's your first time working with clay. Great group of people and great atmosphere.

I came to clay last October for a class and left wanting to become a member and was welcomed with open arms and knowledgeable caring owners. Since then my craft has grown and i have found my clay style. I dont know what i would do without this space. So welcoming and everybody is so nice. Give this studio and clay a try at a class you you will fall in love as well.

I booked a pottery lesson for my girlfriends birthday to make two pieces each. Upon arriving at the scheduled time, the other two people that were assigned into in our group were not there. We had to wait 15-20 minutes to start the lesson and therefore had a much shorter amount of time to make our pottery than what I paid for. We were told the pieces would be ready after two weeks but it took closer to a month. 2/4 of the pieces were messed up after they were glazed. One piece (the blue cup) was not glazed and missing paint partially (paint is also cracking). Another (the green bowl) has a hole in the bottom. HIGHLY recommend spending your money somewhere else.

Molly was there to kindly greet everyone, guide the children to complete task and behave, teach craft and chat with the adults. I enjoyed being in her class and I enjoyed seeing my little nephew complete his project. You can tell Molly has experience and education working with young children. On the walls we saw paintings and various drawings made by children. We did an Autumn seasonal craft project with paper, wooden wreaths, glue and various other decorative items. They have no-meter warning on Sunday, all other days there is a 2 hour maximum at a meter which can be paid by quarters or credit card, I do not think they accept EBT. Plenty of parking that day and other parking available if you are willing to walk. There is a garden area out back with rocks and a bench and the sun and air flowing in. I enjoyed the experience very much so as did many of the people I met there. I think the price range is fairly reasonable for the uptown people of this affluent area though maybe not for this downtown kind of guy. I do plan to come back in this area and I would highly recommend this place to any Hipster parents who want to keep children entertained for a while and want to help develop their children's vital skills.

The staff is strict and they somehow manage to do what our previous school was not able to do - keep the kids feeling safe. When my kids started, I sat in on many of the classes to help one of my kids adjust. Almost every day for a year I went to the first 2 classes. In a large 8am singing class meant (I imagine) to gather the kids together and provide structure while stragglers arrived, I watched the teacher nip every potential behavior problem in the bud with, "I hear someone talking. If someone is talking while X is asking a question, then we can't hear X's important question". Or, "If you aren't participating then we are missing your voice. We need your voice". Everything here is based on the idea of an ensemble. And the importance of the individual within the ensemble is stressed. The ensemble performances that they do twice a year are truly amazing. Imagine being thrown in with different groups of students in your school twice a year to perform. Part of the reason there is no bullying is that you bond with your fellow cast members. There are some overarching mission statements that you see over and over again that are unique and heartwarming. For example, although there are no tests, they have a lot of essays to write where the kids have the opportunity to express themselves. They are told that there is not right or wrong answer and they just want to hear their ideas. They are often asked to reflect on themes and the teachers don't feel like they have "the answer", but rather are excited to hear what the kids come up with. It feels like college level teaching. To me, this is exciting stuff! I sat in on a second grade humanities class and felt like I was in college: a group of 8 kids plus a teacher sat around the table and discussed King Lear. The kids had so much to say about the age-appropriate rendition of what they were reading. The school also has a social justice bent and the themes of their shows often reflects current events. One of the high school students told me that they read the constitution every year in high school and every time she finds something new. So yes, there is much here that is going to look different from your typical school. It functions differently and so the form will be inherently different. I feel that as long as the child is happy, that is the best gauge of the fit of the school. And my kids are happy here.
