So informative! Went home completely inspired. I've taken 5 classes and I feel like they are all great.

I connected with Yena just before the Covid issues. I had her and her partner sew all of my products which included patterns. I also had her grade the patterns for me. I paid someone for tech packs and had to get a second person to grade them into PDFs for me. Then I paid someone to print the graded patterns. I recently spent hours cutting the graded patterns and am now attempting to sew them. However I have found issues with every single style and have had to spend hours determining what needed to be corrected with each style and making the pattern corrections which means every penny I spent for everything else was wasted. I am very upset that every single style pattern is wrong which means every single size is wrong too. read more

I LOVE this studio. I started taking classes last year and I feel like I have learned so much! I took the beginner series which allowed me to learn about using a home sewing machine and serger, and then a bit about pattern making. I have been able to make throw pillows, bucket hats, bags, and more. Most recently, I took the T-shirt workshop and I learned how to make my own t-shirt, including how to alter the pattern! It was so fun. The staff is always incredible and so helpful. Jess has been my teacher for a few workshops and always provides great feedback and helps me learn about techniques specific to what I want to do with the project. I've been sewing for at least 15 years and probably 90% of my wardrobe is me made. I've been completely self (and internet) taught. However, fitting bras and swimsuit tops eluded me. I live in San Diego but drove up to stay in LA for the weekend to take one of their specialty weekend classes. They had @whatbellamade come for a 2 day 8 hours each day bra making course. It was an incredible class and was so worth the time and money. Pros The space was great- a nice sunny room with multiple tables and machines. You could borrow their machines, which is so nice to not have to bring your own. There was a fitting area with a mirror and a curtain so you could try your makes on with privacy. There is also a second room with sergers, but we did not work in that room. There's a coffee shop around the corner and a few restaurants if you need to stop for some nearby food. They have a little kitchen area with a sink, fridge and mini oven so you can prepare food if you're in a long class. They also have a kettle and tea bags, cocoa, etc available for free. Cons The list of materials we should bring was sent out the night before. 3 of the 4 of us were from out of town so we got it too late. I wish they had sent that a week earlier, or even better, as soon as we had signed up. Thankfully, they had most of the materials we would need and the rest we could do without. The seats were not comfortable. They'd probably be fine if you were just doing a few hour class, but 2 8 day hour days got uncomfortable. The tables were too short to stand and sew. The tables are technically covered in large cutting mats, but we really struggled with them and it is not ideal to cut lingerie fabric with scissors. I would bring my own cutting mat and rotary blade if I came back for another class. Overall, it was a great space and they seem to have a wide variety of classes from complete beginner to advanced techniques. read more

I took my first one on one class a few years back. The instructor was very knowledgeable and helped me put my piece together but she was going so fast I knew I was not going to get it all or remember what to do if I had to do this by myself again. Took serger class and there was more information than I needed to know such as cording, etc. I'm thinking this class could be split into two sections. There's less street parking on weekends now than there used to be because of new signs put up that say no parking Saturday and Sunday. Always have problems with door code and have to wait for someone to let me in. read more

I hadn't touched a sewing machine in 20 years (and honestly I wasn't ever very good at it) but I really wanted to alter my clothes to fit better and make stuff I saw on Pinterest, so I took the intro to home sewing class and the intro to serger class (so I could sew stretchy fabric) and I completely fell in love with sewing! I've taken a bunch of classes since then with Megan and Jessica and they are fantastic teachers, always happy to explain and re-explain things, and they're really supportive of whatever journey someone wants to take with their sewing. All of the group classes have been really fun and they have a great community feeling to them. Everyone is really nice and encouraging :) The alterations class was awesome cause I got to bring in a pair of jeans I've had for a while that didn't quite fit right, and got learn how to diagnose the problem and fix it. Pattern making 1 & 2 I learned how to use my own body measurements to make a skirt that fits perfectly and then use those measurements to change the skirt design (like pencil skirt v.s. long flowy skirt or whatever you can think of really). But most of all I loved the 1 on 1 personal classes! I brought in a pattern for a bomber jacket that was WAY too hard for me to do by myself and Megan and Jessica taught me how to read/understand the pattern, how to properly prepare my fabrics, and then of course basically held my hand through every technique (zippers, pockets, piping, pattern alterations...etc). It turned out so well and I am IN LOVE with my new one-of-a-kind bomber jacket! tldr: came for the basics, stayed for the awesome community read more

I bought a package for five classes, took one and it was good. But then COVID hit and they were shut down indefinitely. I waited and waited but had to move in 4 months. I asked if I could get a partial refund bc I was expecting to finish it all before I moved 8 hours away but they said no, but to come to the classes whenever in LA (which is ridiculous!). I asked for online classes and they said that was fine just let them know what I wanted to make. I called and emailed them several times and the rejected everything I asked to make and would only do small things like tote bag (which I already did!) and that one online class would take up two classes I purchased. I was so so so disappointed and it was such a waste of $500 that they refused to understand or refund. read more

I've been looking for sewing classes around the area as it's been hard to self-teach. After finding Sewing FYI in Yelp, I had some questions and the customer service has been responsive and helpful to tell me which classes I should take. I bought the designer package and I am able to now operate my own machines and make my patterns in 5 classes--well enough to get me started independently and get me to learn the material (videos, blogs, etc...) on my own vs when I was trying to self-teach from scratch. It's promoted to have your questions and bring your own projects; Jessica and Megan do their best to answer your questions. If you need help during class, they're more than happy to help. If you're falling behind, they will help you and there's no pressure to leave by the end of class if you still need some more time. There's nice promos that they offer like free classes (had some classes for Easter), amenities are nice as they have drinks and snacks so you feel very comfortable while taking your class. Space is big enough that you're able to work well enough with other students but not overly big. There's tools you'll pretty much need for most (if not all) your projects--for during class, and for free-day classes. Of course you are feee to bring your own machine and it's recommended so you're specifically taught with your machine. The only complaint (not specifically to Sew FYI) is the area is harsh for parking. There's not a lot of street space, there's no dedicated parking and the public parking is expensive--classes range long enough that you'll reach the max threshold for an all-day for any public parking usually, which is around $24. Also, with street parking there's the LA Metro parking district that makes it seem you have to pay by using a specific parking app, but these don't work and the street parking is definitely preferable but if you are running late you may end up using public parking anyway. If you can afford classes and have zero sewing experience, I absolutely recommend this place. read more

Me and my best friend are SO grateful for this place! We both wanted to learn how to sew and work with clothing specifically without having to pay tuition for a fashion school, but most other sewing courses are more "arts and crafts"-y. Having the right teachers and equipment and workspace for teaching beyond "DIY arts and craft sewing" is very hard, so that's what makes this place so special and worth supporting. It is not easy for us to get to since we live in Van Nuys, but it's worth the trip. We bought the beginners package (highly recommend) and my friend and I have already agreed that the lessons are worth their price easily. For our first class, we were given a crash course on terms for fabrics and sewing machines, and we immediately got to apply all that knowledge to sewing something. Having a good foundation and then making something with my own hands is one of my favorite parts of learning. I always feel so accomplished after every class. The things we are learning, even in the beginner courses and workshops, feel practical and slowly build up our skillset. And I always feel confident I could replicate what I made during our classes. The teachers we've had were both very cool as well. They are patient, funny, personable, and kind. They are very knowledgeable and experienced, and always create a supportive environment. I know this could be a small thing, but I'm also very impressed and grateful for their customer service. They are always very helpful and go above and beyond to answer your questions and make sure you are sure about your decisions for picking your next class, and reminding us about class prerequisites. When I booked the first class for both my friend and me under my name, they reached out promptly to confirm the name and contact information of my friend and handled everything on their end. I felt taken care of and this, in my opinion, does add substantial value to the classes and this company. The only issue I want to mention is not about the studio itself, but the location. It in a non-busy area of DTLA near/in the arts district, so getting there is not hell, thankfully, but we do have to pay for a parking lot every time we go. They mention that there is street parking, but every time we have gone, it's all full. But on the flip side, I'm okay paying for parking because this means we don't have to worry about street parking time limits, since beginner classes are always 2-3 hours long if not more. Give this place a shot! We are very excited for our Serger Intro class and our next few workshops, and are planning to take the alterations workshop as well! read more

Sew FYI has been such an awesome experience! I began with the Beginners Package where they taught me how to use my sewing machine, how to use a serger machine and I've learned some basic sewing patterns. They have really boosted my sewing confidence. I am a visual learner, so with the staff being hands on and showing every step is really helpful. I also took the alteration class and the draping class. I now know how to do basic alterations which is really convenient with my body type and drape materials onto a mannequin to create new designs. I am really excited for the upcoming fashion drawing class. There hasn't been one class I've taken that I didn't enjoy or leave feeling I didn't learn anything. I just took an Intro to Home Sewing class because I've been wanting to learn how to sew for the longest time. I've taken a sewing class at JoAnn's before but wasn't able to retain anything. At Sew FYI, Megan did such an amazing job teaching us the basics and taking her time to make sure we really understood the machine. The class size was small, so I was really able to learn and remember so much from the course.
