    From the Beginning Metalsmithing Intensive.
    Gregory M.

Nicole's studio is located in the Brewery Artist Lofts (https://www.breweryartistlofts.com ) and she offers beginning and intermediate courses in the making of metal jewelry. I've taken two of her classes, the "Beginning Metalsmithing Intensive" and the "Stacking Rings Workshop." In the Metalsmithing Intensive, Nicole takes you through the basics of working with metal: sawing shapes from sheet metal, creating textures on the surface of metal and soldering metal. She has you begin with relatively inexpensive brass and copper sheet (all provided with the price of the class). After two days of this class, you will have learned a large number of the basics of metal-smithing. And you will find that it's very easy to take these basics and organically build from there. By the time I took the Silver Stacking Rings Workshop, I had become comfortable with sawing metal (sterling silver this time), creating textures and sizing pieces using a variety of techniques. After just three days' worth of classes, I feel like I know the basics of making metal jewelry and am figuring out how to continue to expand them. I'm planning on taking Nicole's class on bezel setting stones even though from what she taught me, I've already learned the basics...I'm just honing my skills at this point. OStudioworks is definitely the first place I'd recommend for anyone who wanted to learn how to make metal jewelry in Los Angeles. Highly recommended.

    Workshop process

Absolutely obsessed! If you're ever thinking about getting into metal work and into jewelry making with metal work, this is your place! Nicole is such a great teacher and an awesome good person! Her workshop and studio are so cool. She's so patient and she really invites you to dream up creative creations. Perfect if you want to go solo, perfect for friends and even couples! Don't sleep on one of her workshops - this is a must do!

If you have ever been interested in metal working and jewlery making but don't know where to start, THIS IS IT. Nicole is an incredible instructor who absolutely kickstarted my passion for creating in metal mediums. I searched around for similar courses and opted to travel about an hour to her because of other testimonials and it could not have been more worth it. I've taken two classes from her so far and will certainly be back. Regardless of your experience level (starting from absolutely none like me) she will meet you where you are and help you achieve your goals while making sure you learn as much as possible. Her space is beautiful and classes are limited in size so you really get 1:1 attention. I've taken both the metal work 2 day intensive and the sterling silver stacking rings courses and they both taught me so much - plus they were an absolute blast. The stacking ring class is a great starter and is very approachable to anyone, so I went with a couple friends and had a great time. The metalworking intensive is longer and more involved, but absolutely the right choice for learning techniques you can continue on your own. She provides amazing instruction for both, as well as extra information to take home on the processes covered, materials suggestions, and how to set up your own home station without a ton of upfront investment. I really don't think you can find a better value for her wealth of knowledge, tools, and materials. On top of all this, reach out to her for private classes, team building, corporate events, etc as she can come to you and help create experiences no one will ever forget!

Nicole is a wonderful teacher - kind, knowledgeable, and patient. From the moment we arrived till the moment class ended, Nicole did everything she could to help us understand and apply a variety of jewelry-making techniques. The result is we left with all of the skills needed to begin our journey as creators, as well as a number of beautiful pieces! I couldn't be happier with my investment in this class, and look forward to the next !

A great intro to metalsmith and creating your own jewelry. Nicole was knowledgeable, engaging and fun to be around. You're clearly learning from a master of her trade and being able to work hands on with her was a pleasure. In the intro class you learn several techniques such as metal sawing, metal stamping, adding texture, soldering, filing and sanding, antiquing and several others. It was enough to get excited and feeling confident in wanting to do more. I recommend this class for an individual or as a group. Would be fun to get like minded friends together and see what you can create. Best part is, you end the 2 day workshop with a few of your own pieces!

I took the 2-day metalsmithing intensive with Nicole, spending 4hrs/day in her studio. It was just me and another girl so an intimate, hands-on experience which was priceless. This was a totally new experience for me but Nicole's instructions and advice offered a lot of guidance and assurance to the process and 4hrs went by in a flash. I really enjoyed the sawing process and LOVE the 4 pendants I created and went home with. A truly memorable, rewarding experience for anyone who has interest or curiosity in jewelry making. I want to go back to take the stacking ring class too!

I made this ring using the techniques I learned in her bezel setting workshop!

I have learned so much in the workshops here and acquired a new passion in life. Nicole is a great instructor, very knowledgeable, and fun to be around. I made the turquoise and stacking rings in her workshop, and took what I learned to make the rest of the rings in these photos on my own! How fun!

My partner and I took Nicole's Metalsmithing Intensive class, which spanned two days. We were completely new to the world of metalsmithing, and Nicole was an incredibly patient, passionate, and knowledgeable teacher throughout the learning process. She walked our group through the entire process of creating a piece--from learning how to saw metal, to design considerations, texturing, soldering, polishing, and even taking the extra bit of time required for the patina. She worked with each of us one-on-one to help produce the best outcome for our ideas. Overall, the experience, which included spending time in Nicole's unique and whimsical art studio, was nothing short of magical. We left with some respectable beginner pieces and a strong desire to continue with the craft. We will definitely be back to take the bezel setting class! Thank you Nicole!!

I took the beginning intensive workshop a couple of weeks ago and ahead a fabulous time! Nicole was patient and a great teacher. She gave the exact right amount of instruction while still letting the students explore their own creative side. I ended up making four pieces of jewelry that I have been wearing almost daily. Highly recommend this workshop!

Always wanted to try making my own metal jewelry but had zero experience. Nicole was the absolute best. She is super nice, supportive and helpful, as well as very knowledgable. She keeps her classes small to be sure that everyone gets the instruction they need to work on their pieces. I was able to make 3 unique pieces in a short 2-day (8 hour total) beginner course, and with Nicole's guidance, all my pieces came out great! I can't wait to take another one of her classes. Very highly recommended.

My children are in 1st and 4th grade and enjoyed the 2 part Crochet class. When it was a bit difficult for my younger one, Debbie scaffolded the entire thing and made it possible for her to learn, feel successful, and feel like part of the group. We have also tried the finger knitting blanket class and now my 4th grader can make gorgeous blankets for friends and family. The sewing classes for 8+ are incredible. My eldest has loved going in to learn how to make tote bags, pillow cases, and a variety of other sewing projects. They also have camps, which we are eager to try someday. Most recently we hosted a very special birthday party here and I can share that it was incredible, lovely, and probably the most present I've ever been able to be at one of my kid's birthday parties, considering Debbie took on most of the labor! 11 children made pillows together, along with adorable rainbow keychains and they really had a blast. I was so impressed to see my little one sewing away on the machine with her dad next to her and the older kids jump right in. Many of them made 2-3 little pillows, even though they had never sewn before! Debbie's instruction is clear, easy to follow, and she has a great deal of patience while sharing how to create these masterpieces. It was really nice having mochi ice cream in the middle table area too- Debbie had everything needed for a party in case things were forgotten. The little fridge helped too! It was very reasonably priced and an unforgettable experience for the kids. We hope Meraki will be on this cute corner for many years to come!

Gradually my son would come home sad and upset. At first, I brushed off his complaints as maybe he just had a random rough day. Today, I picked up my son and Ms. Billy complained about his projects and all kinds of stuff right in front of my son. My son came to the car crying feeling terrible about his artwork. I asked him several questions about what happened as I didn't want to make any rash judgements about the teacher. He explained that he felt that Ms. Billie was being mean to him and that he was really struggling with clay (it's a new skill for him). I asked if she helps him with his clay a little extra since he's obviously struggling more than the rest of the more experienced students (I'd think she'd spend a little extra time with him). He said no - she was drinking tea and when she came back he had made a snail project where its tongue broke off and couldn't put it back on. He said he destroyed it and my son said she made another mean comment to him: "ohh so you're breaking stuff, instead of making stuff". He was struggling to put on the tongue, which you didn't help him with. Ms. Billy told me it was Gary the snail which didn't go with the CA theme they're working on. Ok. My question is: how is one of your struggling students able to make an entire snail project without you noticing until he's that far along with it? Then, the tongue falls ogf of it, you make a comment to him about it being wrong, he destroys it, you make another comment to him about him about breaking things instead of making things. Ok. If she's going to drink tea instead of helping struggling students then she shouldn't be surprised about them struggling. He said she was helping the other students - not him so much. He also said he got up to grab a toothpick, and she said to him "you're disrupting the entire class" and he was embarrassed that all the kids stared at him. He wasn't being defiant but she keeps treating him as if he is. My son said he was really surprised at how mean Ms. Billy was treating him - he genuinely didn't know he was doing anything wrong, She did sound agitated when she was complaining to me about my son. I know my son - he's not a bad kid and he's super kind. I'm not just saying that because he's my son. He truly is. I'm the type of person that takes criticism well and I'm happy to help correct behavior when necessary. In this case, I really feel that Ms. Billy is not spending enough time with struggling students - in my sons case not understanding instructions according to her. I didn't appreciate her putting my son down in front of both my husband and I. Ms. Billy made it sound as if my son was being defiant - I can assure you my son is not defiant - he genuinely is just having a hard time with the project! He's asking for help from his teacher in his own 8 year old way. He just turned 8 by the way. Mrs. Elizabeth in the front is amazing on the other hand! Very helpful and kind lady.

Truly an inspiring place where children come to explore and create their own art. So thankful to have found this studio! *also editing my review to add that I specialize in a field of child development & communication; I respectfully disagree with the parents below who claim this place is merely a bunch of babysitters or that their children didn't learn anything during their time here. I've been so impressed the way the educators here scaffold the summer camp in a way that the older kids are making Claymation videos or sewing stuffies alongside the younger ones. No one is so frustrated that they can't participate and at the same time these kids are challenged!! My children had increases in their artistic abilities, social skills, vocabulary, fine motor skills, ability to use technology to create art, and I would go so far as to say even their overall self esteem, as the final art show is truly a special time for families to come together and celebrate what these children have created with the guidance of some awesome instructors. Sorry, but I could go on! The only time I've ever seen the tv on at Art/Work/Place was during the gorgeous, hilarious, magical Claymation Camp viewing party a year ago and the time the Ninja Turtles animators used it to show us some clips from a movie they made. Again, context matters.... Let your kids give them a try and decide for yourself :)

I didn't see any signage at all. The parking lot is very odd with a strangely narrow entrance so very easy to miss - people were stopping in the middle of the street and turning around after missing the driveway. The parking lot is also small - although I think there may be another lot across the (very busy) street. The buildings themselves are lovely but again, not a lot in the way of signage and I still have no idea if there is a bathroom on property. The main auditorium felt dangerous... the steps are narrow and shaky and the hand rails are completely unhinged - flopping back and forth when touched - absolutely unsteady. There also didn't appear to be any clearly marked accessible seating. The entrance to the auditorium has you walking into total darkness, so black you think you're walking into a haunted house - and it's narrow. Anyone with a wheelchair is going to have a problem. This building in particular needs to be modernized from top to bottom. The Plaza area is really pretty and would be a nice place to host an event, but the indoor spaces really need attention.
