What a wonderful experience. Clay Cafe is absolutely mom-and-daughter approved! I originally came across the idea of painting pottery while visiting Vista, California. I wanted to do something different and special with my mom, who is almost 80, incredibly active, full of spirit, and has worked hard her entire life. She had never really been in a setting where she could simply sit down, paint, and explore her creative side, so I wanted to surprise her with something new. While we were still in Vista, we briefly parked and I started looking up pottery-painting places closer to the LA County area. That is when I came across Clay Cafe. We were already beginning our drive back toward home, so I decided to take a chance on it even though it was still about 30 minutes from us. I'm so glad I did. This is a family-owned business run by a mother-and-daughters team who are artists themselves, and you can really feel the care they've put into the space. They were welcoming, helpful, patient, and genuinely kind from the moment we walked in. We picked out our pottery and ended up spending almost THREE HOURS painting! The time flew by because we were having such a great time together. There are plenty of paints, tools, and creative options, and the guidance they provide is wonderful without making you feel rushed. They also have a cafe next door with coffee, cookies, and other goodies. If you have a sweet tooth, definitely try the cookies--they are huge! We enjoyed iced coffee and a cappuccino while we were there. I will say that this isn't the cheapest pottery-painting experience, but I felt the quality, materials, tools, atmosphere, and assistance made it worth it. My shark piggy bank was around $60 and my mom chose a vase around $50, so with everything we spent roughly $130-$140 for the two of us, depending of course on what pottery you choose. After you finish painting, they glaze and fire your pieces. They took our contact information, and about two weeks later we received a text letting us know everything was ready. We picked up our finished pottery today and were SO happy with how it turned out. They welcome walk-ins, although I would recommend making a reservation, especially if you want to settle in and really enjoy the experience. Parking was also easy since they are in a small plaza shared with 7-Eleven. They also host fun events, including a plant bingo where you can apparently win plants, so definitely check their current schedule. For me, though, the best part was simply getting to sit across from my mom, paint together, laugh, talk, and watch her creative side come out. That memory alone was worth every penny. Wonderful family-owned business, wonderful people, and such a fun experience. We will absolutely be back. UPDATE: Thank you for your sweet message ! It was a beautiful memory and one I'll cherish! The vase made it across the continent to Ecuador ! Looking forward to bringing her back here again and also sharing this with the family ! See you ladies soon read more

How fun and therapeutic this place is! I took my niece, sister-in-law, and daughter and we all enjoyed ourselves. We were so pleased with what we painted, and the staff there are warm and helpful. It's definitely worth a visit! read more

Such a fun experience! They have a selection of white pottery pieces to choose from mugs to animals to ornaments to piggy banks. To get started, you can use a pencil to draw, tracing paper for a printed design, stickers as stencils, or even lace for cool designs. After painting, you'll come back in a week to pick up the piece after they glaze it. A group of five of us came for a fun girls' day and spent about two-ish hours painting and gabbing. The staff were so nice in giving us a mini-orientation and even helping us out when we made the dreaded paint mistake! It's a great spot for friends, kids, a date, or a solo outing if you want to be creative. They have a complimentary parking lot, otherwise, there's metered parking and free street parking in the neighborhoods across Wilshire. Tips: - You can see their current inventory online and they can order you a specific piece if you give them a month's heads up. - For words or numbers, bring your own stickers. Otherwise, you can purchase theirs and they have lace for sale too. - Check out their Instagram for inspiration! - For the non-artistic types, I highly recommend printing out a design you want in advance. You can trace it directly on a plate or the like and then just paint it with colors (or pick something easy like an animal to paint). Have fun! read more

The fella just moved from Texas is the most accommodating service person that graced us. I wish all businesses were operated this way. Came with daughter she loved it- I may be the worst designer - but experience was great - thank you read more

How awesome this store is so cute and they will also be opening a coffee shop next door! Not only can you paint but also have a nice cup of joe! The staff were so friendly and so kind, they gave us a tour and a sneak peak as to how the whole store runs! I really enjoyed the part that you have unlimited time and access to paint and stay until you finish your piece! I am really excited to come here and paint some beautiful projects! read more

Absolutely love this place! Made a reserv for a day out with my niece and we had so much fun! Many ceramic pieces to choose from and a large range of glaze colors and tools to choose from. Best to have an idea of that you want to paint in advance. We had screen shots of photos we found on the Internet. Now we are looking forward to seeing our finished product. Can't wait to return to create more memories and another piece. read more

So pleased with my experience here. This is basically just a cuter, family owned, color me mine. They're building a coffee shop too which is going to be so amazing. Let's get into customer service - Lulu was absolutely amazing to my friend and I who are not experts or artists in the slightest. I really wanted to do zebra print and Lulu walked me through how to do it and made me feel super confident. I ended up running out of time having to leave, but queen lulu offered to finish it for me! I could have come back as well but of course preferred her to do it lol. Picking it up was a total breeze as well. I love my new cup which I'm using as a toothbrush holder. I absolutely will be coming back and showing more friends!! read more

I had an amazing experience at this Clay Cafe. It is a family owned business with very nice owners. I went there on a Friday night and picked up a beautiful set of teapot and a mug. The process was smooth and I had a peaceful time. I was visiting the area and I highly recommended them anyone who is interested in painting clay! They didn't have the cafe or throwing wheel part open yet but I will definitely go back when I am in LA again! read more

Clay Cafe - Event space set slightly apart from rest of studio - Paint-Your-Own Pottery Near Me - Santa Monica, California

We had the sweetest experience at Clay Cafe. My 5-year-old came in with a very specific creative vision (as five-year-olds do!) and the owner, Santi, could not have been more patient or encouraging. He truly went out of his way to help her bring her idea to life -- talking through her plan, helping with techniques, and treating her like a real artist rather than rushing her along. You can feel the care in this place. It's thoughtful, warm, and clearly run by people who genuinely love what they do and love supporting kids' creativity. Such a special little business. We'll definitely be back. read more

Had an excellent daytime date here painting some pottery with great tunes playing and an awesome staff. Tons of kitchenware and figure choices to paint on and the owners are really helpful teaching different methods if you wanna get creative. Cost of the item is what you pay. Paint, firing, etc is all included in the price. Awesome place for a birthday, paint party, date, or just chill relaxing hang spot. Love that it's family owned and can't wait to be a regular there. read more

This is my second bad experience of this place. I went with my daughters and one accidentally slipped and broke something so little! An item that was so small and clearly an accident. Instead of being kind and understanding she charged us for it and was incredibly rude about it. I normally love supporting small businesses but in this case I will never go back. read more

My friend and I have been looking for pottery classes for a month. Since I work in the area I decided to come in and ask questions ( I'm glad I did before wasting time and money ). This is a pottery painting cafe which isn't what I expected. I came in to get information about the place and ask for a business card. The lady handed me a business card but I had a couple other questions but she didn't seem very welcoming she was very short. As a business owner ( which I am ) if someone is inquiring about your business tell them about your business and sell yourself. Clearly she didn't want my business and that's okay because with that attitude they'll be closed down like the businesses next to them going bankrupt. read more

I love Clay Cafe! Not only is the staff so kind and friendly, they're talented too. I've gone three times and plan to go more. There's nothing better than spending a couple hours painting. They offer a large variety of ceramics to choose from and have tons of colors and tools. The staff seem genuinely happy to be there, which sets a really nice atmosphere. I know they're working on a coffee concept, which I think will be great. They let you bring drinks and snacks in which I appreciate. I want to try a class with them as well! I cannot recommend clay cafe more. read more

The Studio Manager is great! When I was looking for a particular bisque piece for a sentimental project, she communicated with me regularly about its availability. Wonderful activity for kids (and adults!) with high quality, lasting and truly usable results. Highly recommend this studio! read more

Came here with my 2 kids and we had a blast! They have a lot of different ceramic options, and the kids had so much fun using several different paints to create their designs. Once it was glazed our ceramics looked so vibrant and beautiful. Can be really fun for a kid or adult birthday party too. Or come solo and relax with some painting. We hosted our daughter's birthday party here this afternoon. They are the real deal, family owned, great listeners & they excel in service.
