I wanted to do something different and special with my mom, who is almost 80, incredibly active, full of spirit, and has worked hard her entire life. She had never really been in a setting where she could simply sit down, paint, and explore her creative side, so I wanted to surprise her with something new. While we were still in Vista, we briefly parked and I started looking up pottery-painting places closer to the LA County area. That is when I came across Clay Cafe. We were already beginning our drive back toward home, so I decided to take a chance on it even though it was still about 30 minutes from us. I'm so glad I did. This is a family-owned business run by a mother-and-daughters team who are artists themselves, and you can really feel the care they've put into the space. They were welcoming, helpful, patient, and genuinely kind from the moment we walked in. We picked out our pottery and ended up spending almost THREE HOURS painting! The time flew by because we were having such a great time together. There are plenty of paints, tools, and creative options, and the guidance they provide is wonderful without making you feel rushed. They also have a cafe next door with coffee, cookies, and other goodies. If you have a sweet tooth, definitely try the cookies--they are huge! We enjoyed iced coffee and a cappuccino while we were there. I will say that this isn't the cheapest pottery-painting experience, but I felt the quality, materials, tools, atmosphere, and assistance made it worth it. My shark piggy bank was around $60 and my mom chose a vase around $50, so with everything we spent roughly $130-$140 for the two of us, depending of course on what pottery you choose. After you finish painting, they glaze and fire your pieces. They took our contact information, and about two weeks later we received a text letting us know everything was ready. We picked up our finished pottery today and were SO happy with how it turned out. They welcome walk-ins, although I would recommend making a reservation, especially if you want to settle in and really enjoy the experience. Parking was also easy since they are in a small plaza shared with 7-Eleven. They also host fun events, including a plant bingo where you can apparently win plants, so definitely check their current schedule. For me, though, the best part was simply getting to sit across from my mom, paint together, laugh, talk, and watch her creative side come out. That memory alone was worth every penny. On a recent weekend, I had the opportunity to take the One-Time Class, which is a one-hour course designed for complete beginners. You get to make two pieces, one by hand at the table and one on the pottery wheel. The class size was small (just 5 people) and we got great 1:1 instruction and guidance from our knowledgeable instructor Max. I've always wanted to try the wheel and was surprised how hard it was to use it but it was such a great experience that I think everyone should try at least once. After you sculpt your pieces, you are invited to come back to hand paint (glaze) your work at no additional cost. You can also have them do a one-color glaze for you, but after I saw all the multi-colored pieces of other folks previous to me, it was no contest to decide that I wanted to color my pieces myself. You have up to 3 months to come back to glaze so it's very doable in anyone's busy LA (corporate) lifestyle. Pricing was very reasonable for such a cool bespoke experience. There are a lot of pottery painting studios (e.g. Color Me Mine) but this is awesome bc you get to make the pottery AND color it later! I've already recommended this place to countless people!

They have a variety of objects to choose from, and we signed up for the ramen bowl class. The facility is large and beautifully appointed with several spaces to create pottery. My wife and I were completely new to pottery, so it was a bit intimidating when the class began. The instructor goes through the whole process in the beginning, but we couldn't hear much because of another group that was in another section. The acoustics of the place does not play well with multiple parties having conversations. However, the instructor was kind enough to answer our questions and assist with our mistakes. After you make your bowl, you get to choose different colors. You will not get your end product until several weeks. Overall, it was a great experience which is what you are paying for (not for my amateur oddly shaped bowl!).

They have a wide variety of pottery options to choose from. They have seasonal items and sculptures to cute trinket holders to plates. Once you pick your piece you can get paint and any of the tools. TLDR: DO NOT come to this Color Me Mine because you may get ceramic poisoning…read more This Culver City Color Me Mine has a manipulative and terrible business practice that left me extremely angry. As a caveat, I've had just fine experiences at the Palo Alto Color Me Mine, and my specific issue here is how the manager runs his studio and comes up with ridiculous policies on handling defective pottery that provides no compensation to the customer. When I got my fired plate back, there was a super rough patch on the front from not being glazed properly. Uneven glazing is a food safety hazard as it traps bacteria and exposed ceramic will cause poisoning. I took it back for them to refire it and even out the glazing, but they called back saying they tried a few times and each time the pinholes got worse with new ones showing. They said that's the best they could do and told me to pick it up. I went to pick it up, and they managed to lose my piece, claiming it went back in the kiln again by accident (4th time it went in!!). So I had to wait another week for them to say I could pick it up again. Over a month has passed now since I painted my piece. When I went to inspect the piece finally, there were pinholes and dust and colored particles everywhere on my piece that weren't originally there, and there were still rough patches on the top where I would eat off of. I asked for some sort of compensation given they are possibly giving me ceramic poisoning and they messed up my piece even more. The employees said they talked to the manager (who was on the phone and avoided talking to me himself) and he couldn't do anything about it since it's "normal". I demanded to talk to the manager myself and he had the audacity to say that he guarantees it is food safe and that this level of bubbling and rough patches is all normal. When I emphasized that my food safety was at risk and this plate isn't fully functional, he reluctantly said that I can paint another plate...but guess what: the manager told me I had to give my original piece back to the studio!! He didn't let me just paint another one and didn't give me any discount on my piece. What are they doing with my piece?? He claims it would get donated. Donate it to people and then give those people ceramic poisoning?? What kind of studio policy makes you give back your defective plate in order to paint a new one?? When I also mentioned that I would be leaving Culver City for good in two days so don't have time to paint one anyways, he made it clear that he couldn't provide any monetary compensation for their mistakes. This is manipulative and extremely slimy business practice and no ceramic studio should be run like this. Also, the fact that they couldn't fix my piece through refiring means that they're either incompetent at glazing and/or they're using really cheap and bad glaze. I will be taking this matter up to corporate because Color Me Mines should be providing joy, not anger to its customers.

Best pot making workshop!…read more My friend booked a Make-a-Pot Workshop on Eventbrite this past Saturday and we had so much fun adding colors to our cement molds. The class was organized by Krizia (aka Concrete Geometric on IG). We arrived a little late for the class, but luckily they had just began and we were able to pick our molds - oval, circle, or square. Our class favorited the oval shaped molds and we quickly became experts at mixing different colors thanks to Krizia's assistance. Based off all of the services she provided, this was definitely an experience I'd invite all of my friends and family to try. While we waited for our molds to bake, there were plenty of beautifully crafted items for sale. As a student of the class, we were given a 10% discount off items purchased in the store and a free succulent from the yellow bin. Snacks and bottled water were available for us as well. After our molds were ready, it was time for the reveal. Each student opened their mold to show the class and it was wonderful to see everyone's unique creations. We took group photos and received a polaroid to take home. It was the sweetest gesture! This class was such a blast and at such a great value! Highly recommend to anyone who wants to get in touch with their creative side.

It's a fun place for crafty people. Celebrated a birthday here. They were kind enough to let us cut a cake that we brought along. The vibe is very hip and nostalgic. Pacman, Mario, Micky Mouse, lots of mushroom sculptures, bags, pens, and much more! They give you an apron and gloves. You customize the colors you want in the pot! They provide the concrete mix and the colored powder to choose the color you want. Krizia showed us the consistency we needed before we poured the mixture into our molds. You can customize whether you want your pot to have drainage holes. The concrete dries quickly! The curing process happened in two parts and happened over about less than an hour. You can technically go get coffee while you wait for it to dry. The shop is beautifully merchandised. They are a design agency that has a little store, which also hosts workshops.

As someone who didn't grow up near the ocean, I was apprehensive about taking a 6-day 101/103/104…read moreand 114 ASA certification course suggested by my spouse. But luckily Captain Anthony (aka The Happy Captain) helped to dispel any of those fears. His 30+ years of sailing experience and instruction got us up to speed quickly on the 38-ft catamaran "Untethered". In addition to sailing, we learned provisioning, how to anchor at mooring balls in Catalina, and spent 4 nights on board. It's hard to express they joy I felt at seeing the dozens of dolphins that joined us one afternoon. The man overboard drills we did offshore of Marina Del Rey were also memorable. We brought our own Starlink terminal and were able to familiarize ourselves with some of the navigation and weather apps. Ruth in the office made sure all of our logistics went smoothly. We had signed up a few months prior, with a promo offered during the 2025 Newport Boat Show. Big thanks to the team at Blue Pacific. Highly recommend!
