    My bowl!
    Erica S.

Went here with a group of friends and loved the experience! Our instructor was Cori who was super friendly and really good with the pottery wheel. She definitely saved our pieces from flying off. I loved being able to pick a glaze and learn how to use the pottery wheel. If it was closer I would definitely come here more often! I hope to come back soon with friends and try to make something new! I was so happy with how my bowl turned out and had fun figuring it out with friends. Great for girls night or date night!

We had an amazing time at Bitter Root Pottery with our team!! We host monthly events for our team and this time a few team members wanted to try pottery so we decided to come here! The space was so creative, cute and spacious. The team at Bitter Root Pottery made us feel so at home. They provided us name tags, aprons and of course the clay!! Our team followed along with the instructor to make an amazing bowl. It felt daunting at first but the instructor always came around to make sure we were not falling behind. They also provided us a small table for snacks and drinks which was awesome to have. Our team really enjoyed the experience as a whole and could not be more excited to pick up our bowls soon!!! We even got to pick a glaze that the Bitter Root team will do for us. As a team of art students, we felt like we were back in art school. Such a great team bonding experience for us all.

This was such a fun experience! Went in for a beginners class with no knowledge of pottery/wheel throwing etc and came out learning so much! The beginners class consisted of a 2 hour class and we ended up making a bowl. After the class is done, you're in charge of cleaning up your own station. You don't need to have any experience at all! Paige was the instructor guiding our course and she made everything so easy to follow along to. She was extremely helpful and patient with everyone and thanks to her, my bowl came out looking decent! Even if you have no experience, it's easy to follow along and the instructor will also be able to help you out, which I really appreciate! After the bowls are done, you get the option to choose your glaze and it takes several weeks to be ready for pick up. The studio is spacious and stunning! I loved everything about it. It's located in an area where there's plenty of street parking (free) too which was a plus! Overall I had an amazing time and would definitely love to come back!

10/10 has to be one of my favorite things I've ever done. Christiana was so patient and kind to us. She did a great job explaining everything and reassured us when we had questions. We came on a Tuesday and the class was really small and intimate. It was so fun seeing how everyone's pot came out to be. The place has a large selection of glazes to choose from as well. I can't wait to pick up my pot!! I would highly recommend for a date night or a girls night. I will def be coming again :)

I hadn't done anything like wheel throwing since I was in art school 20 years ago. Megan was an excellent instructor with a sense of humor and patience! She made the experience fun and educational. We were given 2.5 lbs. of clay and each step was broken down one at a time so that our teacher could come around and make sure everyone was caught up and meeting the goal. I was impressed that even though we each were working on our own bowls, every participant's looked unique in its own way. We left our contact info, and got to select the color glaze that the studio will do for us. Our pieces will be ready for pickup in 6 weeks, and because I am in from our-of-town, my friend will be picking up for me.

Original Policy with a time stamp of 10/16/23

My pottery experience was a NIGHTMARE. I signed up for a pottery class on 8/24/23, under the impression that I would receive a call about my pot within the 4-5 week timeline provided on their website, and was told that there would be an additional 7-WEEK delay (totaling 11-weeks before I would receive my pot) because their staff was running behind schedule in the pot firing process. The management refused to give me my refund after I pointed out that it had been past the 4-5 week timeline (mind you, it was WEEK 8) and changed the website policy overnight so that they could cover their basis. When I spoke directly to the owner of Bitter Root Pottery, he was extremely rude, condescending, AGGRESSIVE, and quite frankly, misogynistic in his approach in keeping me from expressing my concerns and receiving a full refund. *** Attached is a screenshot of the original policy and the change in policy sneakily made by management OVERNIGHT*** It is extremely unprofessional and quite frankly sketchy for an entire company to do! If you are reading this, please book at your own risk. There are plenty of other pottery places nearby this particular studio that will uphold their end of the bargain without being sneaky or misogynistic.

What a fun experience. It was our first time doing pottery and it won't be our last. We took the beginners course of the adult beginner wheel class and Cori was our instructor. She was so amazing, patient and detailed. She had a positive attitude and walked us through each step of making our bowls. I didn't realize how many steps it was to making pottery and I give props to those who do this. This is such a wonderful craft. The studio is in a great place in Culver City and it has lots of space for the parties and large classes. I was very impressed with this process, the class and the art of pottery. 10/10 experience

So excited to see the expansion of Bitter Root Pottery, the sister store of Matchstone into the Hayden Tract! We were lucky to sign up the grand opening event and had a super fun afternoon with a wheel-throwing class! Sandy and Joan are awesome and wonderful teachers. I love the interior design with natural tree branches as the dividers and the combination of modernity (chandeliers) and history (rustic metals). It goes with the theme: FUTURE TO THE FOREST. Definitely call to ask for their membership, which includes access to the space, member-only storage shelf, spray lab, and the glazes! It's just so therapeutic to visit the place even if you are not a member. You will love the vibe and perhaps get your artist talent inspired!

This is a spacious and gorgeous ceramics studio. The nicest I've seen! Lots of shelf space for members. Came for Open House and tried the wheel-throwing class. They provide all the tools and the aprons for class. There are lockers for your stuff. I made a bowl with help from the staff. Sandy the instructor and Joan were very helpful. One side of my bowl ended up taller and lopsided so Joan help cut off the top for me. I wore an apron but my sleeves got dirty. So wear something you don't mind getting dirty in and leave your jewelry at home. Had a little bit of a hand cramp so you should do stretching beforehand. They also have tools and supplies for sale. Next door you can check out the sister studio Match Stoneware.

    My piece they broke.

I purchased a two hour adult class ($80). They said our pieces would be done x day. A week passed that date, no news, when we called, they said sorry it's just taking longer. No real explanation nor timeline to share. We finally get our pieces, about a month later than expected, AND my piece is broken. After a bit of back and forth, they say I can reschedule a class to make up for my broken piece. Cool! I have to call to make the new appointment. I'm unable to do it myself they say. Anyone who would like to join me had to book via the website. Unfortunately this lead to a my friend booking for Friday 7pm and I Saturday 7pm. We call immediately to ask if anything can be done. There are at least 7-10 spots available in both classes at this time. They give a hard no. It goes against their policy. We have to take the classes separately. I end up having a personal matter arise on my end, day of. I call to give them a heads up. Basically told, too bad so sad, you're out of luck. End of the line. When I did go the first time (when piece was broken) it was ok, the instructor would just take over and mold your piece if you asked a question. So I didn't feel I got the whole experience to begin with. (I've since gone to a couple of other classes at other company's and was able to learn and do it myself.) Parking is pretty limited. Edited: typo

My friend and I wanted to try out a pottery class for her birthday, so we signed up for the adult beginner class which was $80/person! The reservation process online was pretty seamless and easy to do - all you have to do is choose your location (in this case the Hayden Tract location), date, and number of people! When we arrived at the studio to check, we were instructed to sign in, grab an apron, put on a name tag, and store our belongings in a locker. The space itself was a very nice open layout, and you could see areas for each part of the process! The designated class area had individual stations including an adjustable stool, pottery wheel, tools, water bowl, and a tripod for capturing your progress during the sessions (everyone in my session loved this addition!). The class began with a demonstration from the instructor outlining each step of the process we would complete to make a bowl. When we started our work as a class, the instructors made sure to answer our questions and gave us advice (or help if we had something to fix) on how to complete each step. They waited until each person had finished each step before moving on, which I appreciated because it didn't feel too rushed but also allowed for everyone to receive support and additional time to feel satisfied with each step. At the end of the session, you can decorate/shape your bowls and the instructors will use wire clay cutters to remove your bowl from the wheel. From there, you clean up your station, select a glaze, and fill out the contact information to be notified when your piece is ready! Disclaimer: I haven't picked up my piece yet, so that may definitely impact my review if I were to update it. However, I really enjoyed my time at BRP and would definitely recommend their classes to other people! They also have a sister store next door that sells pieces created in the studio :)

    Ilana F.

Some of the instructors are really rude and have ego!! My final product looked very messay and was not cleaned up! a lots of bump inside and outside of the bowl. I had specifically asked them about the final finish and they said "we will cleaned up before we send it for coloring and glaze". The only thing they did not do it was to clean it up. The color looks two different shades.. so disappointed!

I chose a cereal bowl (believe me, though, I was very tempted by the more whimsical ceramic pieces, such as the cat jar and the, uh, "beakers" :P ), and while I didn't originally have a design in mind, I was inspired by the tile wall to paint an ocean theme. I spent a few very pleasant hours glazing my bowl. I added a small ceramic boat and asked the staff (writing it in the notes on my slip) to glue it in the middle of the bowl. It turned out SO cute. You grab your aprons, your wheel, your slab of clay and watch her demo. You go step by step because some steps will cause you to "lose it all" lol. She explained that their typical classes would allow you to see your clay through from a blob all the way to the firing process which takes several sessions of classes (gotta wait for things to dry etc). There is also a little board with all the firing colors and oxidization/reduction differences which is cool to see it nearly organized. I remember in school there were just huge vats of color hanging around for us to visualize. Afterwards we all helped clean up and labeled our pottery. Entire session was about 2-3 hours. Our bowls will likely be finished in a month after they dip them and fire them up for us. Would totally come back for more classes if they weren't so far... We also had some snacks and drinks some people had brought along but typically I don't think there would be much eating involved...hands are dirty. Theres also a parking lot so parking is handled.
