Have always loved this store and all the others but the other day was met with my first experience of the "Gen Z stare" by the young woman behind the counter. I ventered a little friendly feedback, got stared right through and asked: "Who is this for?" as though the very concept of a response to the vague and disinterested 'find everything ok?' was novel. This bizarre interaction was so strange that even my Gen Z kid was shocked along with me: "Well SHE could not have seemed any less interested in anything" she noted on our way out. I hope this is not something that Blick makes room for in their staff's style. I have always found the staff to be wonderful, friendly and game to help. The customer service at the store is horrific. I arrived at the store literally four minutes before they opened, and I was fully prepared to wait for the opening. I was just standing outside and one of the employees was reporting to work and he goes, "We're not open yet." in the rudest way. ummm good morning to you too. I've been buying art supplies here for years and they always have what I'm looking for. The staff are helpful and since they are usually artists themselves, they know what they are talking about. Sometimes I like to come here just to wonder the aisles, I find nothing as inspirational as an art supply store LOL They have all different levels of materials and price points so if you're a professional artist, a student or a hobbyist you can find what you need in your budget. There is a parking lot that wraps around the building so parking is usually not a problem and there is a great mural on the wall! I'm feeling guitly because I lost track of writing this review. I went to Blick on Lincoln Ave. back on December 23rd to look for a pen and parchment to write my kid a note from Santa Claus. A risky business to be sure, but he had asked for a replica of little stuffed animal he cherishes that he's had since he was 4. The ask was a near impossibility since we don't know the exact origins of said doll. We did get lucky and found a very close replica on Etsy that we decided to pawn off as the brother of the little doll. Cut to Blick - I arrived a dumbfounded dad hoping to figure out a way to have Santa explain, in letter form, to my young, loving child, that this little tiny creature was indeed the long lost brother of his beloved doll. With the help of a young, mid-20's guy with dark hair (the name escapes me lo these many moons later and far too many glasses of wine since that fated day) He might have been the manager on duty as I vaguely recall. I was able to find the right red pen and perfect Santa Claus-esque paper stock that brought tears of joy to my childs face on Christmas morning. Going the extra mile, I asked the kid if he could write the note for my kid since my handwriting would be an obvious killer to the joy that is Santa Claus. He happily agreed and wrote a perfect little note letting my lovely little kiddo that this doll was indeed the brother of his perfect little fuzzy pal and to please take extra speciall care of him for all time. It was the perfect, magical touch that made this Christmas perhaps one of the most memorable in my childs life thus far. read more

Staff sucked, social distancing sucked, lighting sucked Staff wasn't helpful to me or others, one staff member told a customer he was helping he would be right back but as he walked away and past me he whispered(no I won't). For a art store there is no lighting, the lights are way above the shelving and don't make it down into the aisles..... how can you shop for colors when there is poor lighting? I mean they cover up their windows on top of it as to let as little light in as possible. The aisles are also full of people inches from each other wondering around with no help.... at the registers the customers have to pass within inches of each other to exit, and in line the employees pass within inches of the customers in order to get behind the front desk and registers, they brushed me as they walked by!! I just wanted to get out of there and not go back, I left without a receipt knowing I probably wasn't going to use what I bought read more

I shopped at your store many times and liked that they had great products and I am only three blocks away. It was my local art store. This will be the last time I shop there. There's no need to be sarcastic and condescending to patrons. I'm not a professional artist, but to ask a simple question to get the proper materials for my son's art project I had to deal with two people, completely unwilling to help, with one sarcastic and really a bit condescending. I doubt this review will have any impact. Hopefully it will warn others to go someplace else if they want to be treated like a valued customer or just a regular human. I had ignored similar complaints about this place in years past, but I guess today it's true. I will say in the past some employees were super helpful. Not today. Thankfully, there's Amazon. I've only used their framing service for my unusual collages. They worked with me to figure out the best wayn to frame them and did a beautiful job for a very fair price. I decided that I wanted to do an art project and wanted to purchase the materials I need for my creative endeavor. They have a parking lot which is a bonus since I have yet to figure out parallel parking. No one greeted me when I walked in and after wandering around for a while and feeling overwhelmed I went to the front to ask for help. The associate called for someone to come assist me. I explained that I wanted a mixed media pad that had black paper that would work for pastels. Then I wanted to see their pastel section and select a set and then also purchase the setting spray so my art would not smudge. He was patient and listened to what I wanted and gave helpful suggestions. They lost stars with the checkout and what I realized when I got home with my new purchases. I'll give them benefit of the doubt this time and a 3 but if future trips continue along this path then they are a 2 star. I had seen they had a locked case with pastel sets and while most were over my budget I saw one was marked down with a yellow sticker price of $56 for a set of 48 colors. That's a huge bargain considering the Blick brand pastel set of 30 colors was going to be $69. So I went up to the front to ask for someone to open the case. I told the guy which set I wanted and he unlocked the case and pointed to the set so I grabbed it. I then waited in line and purchased all of my items. I asked the cashier at checkout as she rang up the items to make sure that the pastels were the ones on sale for $56 and she said yes. My fault that I didn't see the screen or check my receipt before leaving the store - when I got home I saw the pastel set of 48 I purchased was obviously not the $56 one I asked for but instead one that was $119. I received some kind of web rebate of $29 on my total purchase so I can pretend that I only spent $90 on a super fancy pastel set but I found that extremely disappointing to realize that I didn't get the bargain set of 48 for $56. Not worth the trouble to return to the store and I was excited to begin my project so I went on and opened my new set. On the positive side, the pastels are smooth and lovely - but then again, for that price I would expect them to be amazing. Lesson learned to look at the receipt before leaving the store because obviously the cashier just said yes and ignored my actual question and I should have paid attention to how much I spent. Let's just hope the project turns out beautifully because at that price...eek. read more

This interaction bugged me and stuck with me probably longer than it should have, but it's the second non positive interaction I've had in the framing department so here I am. 1st time I stood in Framing department at the table to inquire how much/ and the process of having a shadow box built for me . The first day, more than one employee walked by, without so much as a "can I help you" my daughter and I stood their patiently for a good 5 minutes trying to make eye contact with a single soul but it was as if everyone dodged that area. Today, the 2nd time I stood there not acknowledged again. Finally when I caught Ivan's attention I asked how much framing cost which he quickly answered "well it's extremely expensive" without telling me any other detail. I paused and asked "what does that mean, how much for a 4x4?" (honestly first dimension that popped into my head. "We don't do frames that small" to which I answered "okay how small do you go?" "We have frames around the corner" hmmm Firstly, I can't help but think it's generally pretty rude to answer a question about pricing with "it's too expensive" AND... what's the point there? I need to know the price not that some how it's assumed how much is too expensive for me. Is this how Ivan talks to all customers? Is everything "too expensive" ? That is just terrible customer service... how do items get sold? It was my 2nd time in a 2 day span being in that store. I've made purchases every time. 4th time since moving to Venice this month. I make art every single day as does my daughter. Art that sells. Art supplies that need to be replenished often. It's unfortunate that I'll be looking for a new store. read more

This is hands down one of the best art stores I have seen. I am an artist, so always on a hunt for a great one. This one is! It has huuuge size paper, foam boards, canvases etc. Ver approachable, engaging & helpful staff - at least 3-4 people asked me if I needed any help, in the ~30min I was there. I did need advice & got it, most time before even getting the chance to start looking for staff. I did not like that the markers were locked, but being right on the cusp of Venice & Santa Monica, on Lincoln Blvd, I am sure they get stolen blind, so I did not mind. Plus the girl apologized for the procedure, which did make a difference to me. I had the most horrific experience with the manager while shopping here yesterday. After a long drive from home, I politely asked the manager if I could use the ladies room. She in return (with a very loud voice) told me that restroom is only for the employees and I couldn't because the corporate office will get mad at her if she let the customers use it. I could surely understand the policy during COVID but what hurt me the most besides my bladder was the manager's unwelcoming, rudeness, loud, unkind, harsh, and negative attitude. Treating the customers with kindness and compassion is surely one way of bringing in more business. I don't think I can come back to this store again for being humiliated for just needing to use the restroom. I will definitely spend my money somewhere else where there is truly a welcoming and positive energy. read more
