I came in search of an uncommon LED bulb to replace an existing halogen bulb. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. In particular, Alice took her time with me, researching options, checking multiple suppliers and answering my questions about light fixtures. She was fantastic. The showroom is also really nice. I so wanted to continue to love this place. I had a couple good experiences and hope to go back and purchase lighting for my bedrooms BUT, here's a warning. I took a light bulb in a few months ago after I purchased a fixture online that came with one of the four bulbs broken. I needed it to be the exact same as the other three as they were to be installed in a kitchen island pendant as part of a kitchen renovation. I bought the bulb from Northwest. They tested it and assured me it was the same. (I had the box of the broken one with me) Fast forward a few months and the work is getting done and pendant is installed. The one bulb clearly is much brighter and doesn't dim the same as the others. I went to return it and they will not take it back as it is past the 30 day return policy. I've had to return other things to other stores that were purchased for this reno without a problem. I showed them many pictures with timestamps proving that I did not use the bulb. No luck. I had no control of when the work would be completed and if you've ever had work done by contractors you know that you're at their mercy. Just know that this place is not in the business of understanding how these things work. Only buy when you're ready to use so you won't have the same problem. They could have taken back the bulb and I would use them and refer them to f/f in the future. Win, win!!! A good manager would know that. Too bad this one doesn't. read more

They'll be able to answer your questions, let you know if there are matching pieces or multiple sizes available, you'll need extra parts because of high ceilings and more! After a friendly voice mail message informed us that our lamps were ready as scheduled, we went to pick them up and bring them home. Yep, these were the right lamps! They look great in our living room and fit the intended space perfectly. BUT! We brought them home and tried them with the light bulbs we purchased here, the ones a sales associate told us worked in this lamp. They do work...as long as you don't want to put the shade on the lamp. Once we put the harp (the part that holds the lamp shade) in place, it became too narrow for the bulb to screw in completely. Now we have to go find some new light bulbs since we do actually want to use the shade. I mean, we bought a lamp with a shade on purpose. It wasn't a "Let's get the shade just to keep one around!" kind of thing. ::face palm:: I'll say again what I said before: they're disorganized and don't really have it all together here, but the selection is fantastic. This place is such contradiction in price/service, that I was not sure how many stars to give them. Sales: When I walked in, like many have mentioned: The girl working the front desk basically ignores customers walking in. I proceeded to walk around unassisted for quite a while. I did identify a few options and finally was able to snag a salesperson. He was all business, which I assume is due to the high volume of commercial business they handle? It seems that even though they have a retail showroom, no one bothered to train or hire staff that can effectively interact with customers. That said, the salesperson quoted me a price for a lamp similar to the one I found from an on line source at a very competitive price. Service: As it was a special order, I was told that it would take up to 2 weeks to get in. Week 3, I finally called to check on the status and was told that the lamp was in. Not sure why no one called me to let me know, but again, they seem to be lost when it comes to dealing with low volume retail customers. When I arrived at the store, had to wait forever at their pickup counter to get someone to handle my order. The lone clerk was busy with another customer and he told me to press the ring button to get someone else to come up. Really, that's how it works? After a few minutes, pressed again, as no one was coming to help. When the lone clerk finally went in the back, in the process of assisting the other customer, I heard him shout to someone, to come up and help. So the buzzer is ignored by WH staff? Overall: I think its worth a visit, especially if you already know what you want and want to do some comparison price shopping. I think 3 stars overall is more than fair, with 4 stars for price and 1-2 star for service. read more

This place has a nice selection of lights, but if you're looking for service, look elsewhere. The staff I interacted with were rude, and they can sure use the oversight of a manager. There was a young lady sitting in front of a computer at the front desk. She didn't look up and tell me she'd get back to me when she was done with her call. After waiting patiently, I said I'd like to purchase a light, and she rudely stated I had to wait for a sales person to become available. The person who hired this receptionist must not have interviewed her, because she'd be the last person I'd want people to meet at my business. The sales person took too long to close the deal. She had to talk to a manager to get information on ordering a light that wasn't in stock. I ended up spending 5 minutes without making any progress. She then said I'd have to pay shipping to have the lights shipped to my house (each light was $160). Turns out the company offers free shipping on product over $50. Northwest Electrical Supply must be successful due to long term relationships with contractors and electricians, because there's no way they're going to get any new customers with the people they have working on the floor. read more

I was in Mount Prospect for other obligations, but I found myself at Northwest Electrical Supply Co. My then-boyfriend has a condo and he needed to update his builder grade light fixtures. I was greeted by the receptionist at the front desk. There, she called someone to help me. I wasn't quite sure what I was looking for, except that my then-boyfriend's preference is for modern fixtures, but the sales associate was very patient and helpful. She was enthusiastic about their selection and gave me a tour. WOW. They have AMAZING and really COOL lights! I don't really all of the designers (I wrote them down), but I really love Hubbardton Forge, which is all handmade in Vermont. Holkotter is a splurge, as they are like the Ferrari of lighting brands. Corbett fixtures are feast for the eyes. Crystorama and Schonbeck make very elegant crystal chandeliars, which aren't my style but I still find them to be absolutely gorgeous. Northwestern Electrical Supply Co. also carry a very neat range of light switch covers and dimmers, from the affordable Lutron to the ultra, extremely neat LED light switches by Legrande. I'm not joking when I was so giddy when I played with them. They are not exorbantly expensive, and they look so sleek. I recommend checking them out! While I didn't buy anything, as my ex wasn't with me, I went home with a bunch of catalogs and pamplets. I told him about the fixtures I saw and his interest was peaked. Northwest Electrical Supply Co. may not be Home Depot, but I'm fine with that. They have many brands that the big box stores don't have. There are fewer sales associates I've noticed, but you have to let the receptionist get them for you. I can't give you my experience with ordering, but I assume they do special orders as they are a smaller company and you have to be patient. My ex-boyfriend better get that Hubbardton Forge Arc Ellipse fixture for his kitchen. I spent a good deal of time here, and you probably will too! read more

I decided to make the quick trip and see what their store room, "Lighting and Accents", had to offer. My impression after leaving was that they were not at all welcoming, not friendly, limited selection, dimly lit, and dusty. My intent was to purchase something there and not pull the molars out of the sales staff. Our electrician recommended NW Electrical as a good place to get the items we wanted. We looked up reviews on-line and got scared at what we saw. Basically it seemed that the selection was great but the service stunk. We timidly went to NW Electrical bracing ourselves for the worst... if we had not had the recommendation of the electrician we would have never gone there in the first place. But we went. We did not call in advance, they did not know us "from Adam." After church on Sunday (since NW is close to our church), we drove over. When we stepped through the door, the lady at the desk there immediately asked how she could help us. My wife and I told her what we were looking for and she immediately got someone who specialized in track lights (what we were looking for), who helped us on the spot. They had everything we needed except for one track. This salesperson processed our order efficiently and helped take the stuff we got and put it in our car. We ordered the remaining track. It took a couple of weeks before we got the remaining track, as the manufacturer, Juno, was closed for Christmas break. NW called us though when the track came in and we came an picked it up. The electrician's work has been done and the result is great! I cannot comment how the service might have been in 2012 or before, but I want to say that besides the selection being great, the service for my wife and I was prompt, friendly and courteous. I sincerely wonder if someone has been posting scary fake reviews to frighten people away since the service was so completely NOT like the reviews I had read. We plan on returning to NW when we have need of any new lighting fixtures. read more

This place is awful, that's putting it nicely. First of alll look at the 10 filtered reviews, about 8 of them are shameless, blatant attempts to top-load the Yelp rating! Of course, don't believe for a second the raving 5-star filtered reviews. Here's the real scoop on this place from a real Yelp user. I've been in here several times, lured by the fantastic selection. Unfortunately I have never been able to actually purchase anything from them. Now it's not for lack of want. It's because of all the resistance/discouragement the staff puts up. They all need remedial customer service training. And a manager on the floor to whip them into shape. Either they BUG you, stalk you, the whole time, or you're a ghost - they can't see you. Walk right past, w/o acknowleding your presence. Last time, we were looking for a replacement glass for an old floor lamp. Walked in there thinking, this'll be an easy one. Wouldn't you know it, not at Northwest Electrical. The staff just won't have it be easy. So we stand in front of a guy sitting behind a computer at their big desk. We stand there, waiting for him to look up. Five minutes. He never does. So I ask: "Hi, do you think you could give us a hand?" He answers, "Oh, I'm not a sales person." Now wait, you let us stand here 5, 7 minutes, staring at you, looking like idiots, and that's all you can say? There's 3 or 4 "sales people" around, you can't get one of them for us? And I KNOW he saw us. Couldn't miss us. And he had this smirk on his face, like he genuinely enjoyed knowing we wasted time waiting for him, him knowing all along he'd just diss us. Fine. So we find a "sales person". She tells us without all sorts of info about the lamp, like the mfr, model, etc. they just can't help. "HUH? This lamp is like 30 yrs old. I know the dimensions we need, you can't help us?" "No." C'mon. This is supposed to be a BIG lamp store, with decades of experience. So here's the good news. I went home and checked eBay. With my dimensions I was able to find a VINTAGE, U.S. made original replacement glass for my lamp (w/o knowing the mfr., etc.). It cost $15.00 with 2-day shipping, and I got a quality American piece that's gorgeous. I didn't have to pay $75 for the cheap, thin Chinese crap glass they have at Northwest Lighting. If you can actually get them to "let" you buy it. That was definitely my last trip there. Lowe's is even better. read more

Spoke with a sales women about a ceiling fan. I was concerned that the one light would not be enough light for my kitchen. After repeated questioning about how I felt that one light wouldn't be enough, the Saleswomen assured me that there would be plenty of light. Well, it isn't. We called to complain and was told that because it was a special order would have to pay a $100.00 re-stocking fee. I can't believe I have to pay because of an employee's incompetence. As an architect, i've had some fairly horrible experiences specifying lighting for projects. Something always falls through the cracks or goes awry. Not the case with Northwest Elec. supply! I was thoroughly impressed with the lighting designer that helped me out. She was more than knowledgeable and specified all of the correct ballasts, lamps switches and wiring. We recently did some remodeling and needed to find some light fixtures that were better than what we could get at our local Menards. I found Northwest from an online search for lighting. Their showroom is much larger than anything we have locally (two floors) and they have a really nice selection. They helped us pick out lights for our kitchen, foyer, and bathrooms. We also got a table lamp and a floor lamp. They had them in stock so we were able to take them home the same day, which was a big deal since we drove so far to go there. I was skeptical before we went there considering other reviews, but the people there were great. So helpful and nice. Really... Everyone seemed very knowledgeable and showed genuine interest in us. The people we talked to there seemed newer (one just graduated from school with a degree in interior design). Maybe they have made some changes, because our experience was really good. We purchase lights from this location before. Some of the fixtures came out of the boxes damaged. Other fixtures they had us travel to another store to pickup and when we arrived at the other store they said no one call and they didn't have the product. Other items they had to order and it took twice as long to receive as promised. Yesterday we drove a half hour to the store only to find they were closed contrary to what their website indicated. This store has a very large selection of lighting and home decor. As a Mommy of little ones, I was pleased to find the "family" parking since I have to lug a stroller wherever I go... Upon entering the store, I found no garbage for my coffee cup and had to ask the girl at the front desk to throw this away. I was directed to the upstairs of the showroom because I was mainly in there looking for new bathroom lighting. Again, thankfully, there is an elevator to wheel my stoller up in. I was helped in the bath area by a very friendly and knowledgable man named Jim. I found a fixture I love, but they had only one in stock and I need 2. He siad that it would take 2-3 weeks to order an additional one. I wasn't heartbroken, but hoped to have them sooner. JIm thought to check stock at their other location and low and behold, their other facility has one in stock too! They will transfer it down for me and I can have it within a few days. I am very excited and can't wait to get my new fixtures... now to tell my husband about his new "honey-do" project. :) I also found a new picture that I think will go perfectly in my powder room.
