Here's the really good news...they are now a smoke-free restaurant! I agree with the other reviews...great food, great prices, friendly service, and interesting retro diner decor. I hesitated to stop in because of the smoking issue, but when I passed by, I saw the sign saying they went smoke free on May 1. There was a decent-sized crowd of cheerful regulars this morning...nobody seemed to mind skipping the cigarettes, and I really enjoyed my breakfast. Favorite breakfast place after moving to Chesterton. Great food and very quick service. Owners are very friendly and happen to be my neighbors! Fresh cookies are complimentary too! They offer curly fries and tater tots as potato options and that is reason alone to love it. This place is busy but always quick to get a table. Love it here!! read more

My brother-in-law ordered the "Bubba Burger" -- one pound of burger -- with bacon and egg on top. It was....scary, as big as his head. And delicious, from what he said. Been going here since it opened, the meat is sinfully delicious, slaw is great, sauces awesome, service is excellent, and the owner is a great guy! Only reason it got 4 instead of 5 is, (in my opinion), the fries are always way too done, and the table clothes are a bit sticky. (It's only fair to note my dad, and husband seem to like the fries! This is a cute little place to stop in for breakfast. We came around 10am on a Sunday morning and luckily had no wait. However the line began to grow after we sat down. There doesn't seem to be much of a place to wait so you might feel a little cramped while waiting for your table. I thought the food was standard, but delicious, breakfast fare. My fiance (who hates eggs) appreciated all the egg-free options he had. This might be our new breakfast spot! read more

Delicious!!! The service was excellent and very fast - you could tell be the people waiting that this was a popular place! We had eggs Benedict, the Stacked Chicks, Belgian Waffles and Biscuits and Gravy. It was obvious most everything was made from scratch and the portions sizes were generous. My husband and I were both unable to eat all of our food and we split other food among our 4 kids and still walked out with enough biscuits and gravy for another meal! Total cost with tip (including drinks for all 6 of us) was $55 so very affordable and reasonable! Highly recommend! read more

My favorite place for breakfast in town. The food is always great, service is fast and friendly and I enjoy looking at all the old memorabilia on the walls. I really appreciate the hot coffee and food today after it took me a little while to get there for my pickup. I always recommend Northside to people visiting or looking for good breakfast. Northside Diner ruined my Saturday this morning. Service was a catastrophe. My husband and I were the only ones not being served. The tables on either side of us as well as several behind were served ahead of us. The couple on our left came in after us and actually finished eating before we were served. A table of school kids also entered after us and finished while we were waiting to be served. I asked if there was a problem with our order and still we waited and waited. We ordered an omelette and pancakes, nothing that should have held up our order so long. Once the order finally came, it was nearly inedible. The omelette was saturated with green peppers and the portion of home fries we received was tiny and overcooked. I'm hoping against hope that this wasn't the restaurant's way of indicating that Black customers aren't welcome there. However, when I looked over the reviews on their Facebook page, I noticed that the other complaint about poor service was from a person of color. Again, I might be mistaken. Small town diner a favorite with the locals, wthe servers greet by name. Peggy Sue oversees the service. Come on summer Saturdays and stroll through the Farmers Market at the park across the street. Oops! Northside Diner is a block down from Peggy Sue's. Heard they had great blueberry pancakes so decided to check em out. My family has breakfast at Northside every week or so - it never disappoints! The food is consistently great. There are lots of options to meet everyone's preferences, from "The Usual" (your choice of meat, eggs, potato, and toast), to the completely customizable "Paper Shakers", where you start with potatoes and add on whatever you want in any combination you can think of. (My recommendation: hash browns well-done, scrambled eggs, feta cheese.) The french toast is among the best I've ever had. The prices are very reasonable. Sadly, I can't comment on the lunch menu, because I can't stop ordering breakfast! The staff are very friendly and accommodating. There are a lot of regulars at the counter every time we're there - this is a spot with a loyal following. Service is always quick, but we've never felt rushed. A couple of notes: Northside is very crowded on weekend mornings, and there is very little waiting space inside the restaurant. We always manage to squeeze in somewhere against the wall, but just be aware that you will have to wait for a table on Saturday mornings, esp. if you have a larger party. Also, they close every day at 3 pm. Hint! They have AMAZING coffee. Before you leave, ask for a refill in a to-go cup! They also offer free wifi. read more

If you are looking for a greasy spoon diner then look no further. They have excellent breakfast and a decent lunch menu. The place is small and frequently busy but offers carry out for all menu items. I both eat here and order takeout from here on a regular basis. It's the best breakfast in Town. I won't take a star away but the only aggravation with this location is that when the owner goes on vacation, the place closes down for a couple weeks....put someone in charge! A wonderful place, with super friendly service and great, fresh-tasting diner brunch food!!! I went with a group of my friends while visiting the dunes, everyone loved it. The portions were nice and big, we even had left-overs. We all needed lots of coffee and that is exactly what we got! (good too) The owner of the diner spoke with us and was just a lovely pleasure. My wife and I where out on the motorcycle and wanted to eat at someplace other than a chain restaurant. This place fit the bill perfect. We got there around 1:00 and the lunch crowd was just clearing out. Plenty of open tables. If you like breakfast all day you'll love this place. I don't. I can't eat breakfast food after 10:00. It's great to live in the area and can pop in anytime. The diner is an actual diner and such a break from the restaurant chains the same in every town. The food is always good and if something isn't correct they'll fix it fast. There is usually a wait because there are so few places like this. First of all, the coffee was the worst coffee I've ever had (you could see through it), the scrambled eggs, while refreshingly not from a box of liquid eggs, weren't scrambled well, had lots of white areas and were flat and over cooked. Bacon was tasty but undercooked, potatoes were heavily soaked in butter and the sausage gravy was lacking in flavor and coagulated. Service was average. Not sure how it got such high yelp ratings...maybe for the Jukebox and nostalgic decor which is why I gave it three stars instead of two. read more

I enjoy seeking out great breakfast places, with great atmosphere in out of the way places. Tack on great food and you've hit a home run!! The Northside Diner in Chesterton Indiana is just one of those places. Greeted as we came in, super friendly service and our breakfast was served fast and hot! Pancakes were about 12" across! We also enjoyed the layered "nests" which combine all of your breakfast favorites together into a bowl of delicious comfort. We travel often between Chicago and Ohio....and we found a favorite for sure!! read more

This place is awesome!!!! It doesn't look like much from the outside, or from the inside for that matter. They did recently renovate the place, which is much needed since they went from smoking to non-smoking. But I come here for the food! The food quality is high, and the prices are extremely low, making for 5-star value. I personally recommend the eggs Benedict or an omelet. The portions are massive, the coffee is never-ending, and the servers are always kind, polite, and friendly. They also accept credit cards now! I like finding little places like this, tucked away where fewer people find it. There may be a wait on a Sunday morning, but it usually isn't too long. I would recommend for breakfast if you want something simple, cheap, and hearty. read more
