2 piece beer battered cod with sweet potato fries.

Ok, here's the secret to this place that only the locals know. If you're coming on a Friday night for their fish fry, you need to be here by 5p. Even earlier if it's high season between Memorial Day and Labor Day. They start serving dinner at 4pm. Their early bird special runs from 4-5p. If you wait until 6, you'll probably have a 1-2 hour wait. While there's plenty of places you can get a decent fish fry in Columbia County, this one never disappoints. Tonight we had Anna for our server. That woman moves faster than the speed of light. Not sure how she manages to do that. If I had service this good all the time I don't think I'd ever eat at home. Well done Anna!

Don't sleep on the Northshore Restaurant at the Portage Country Club. I went last night for a night out with my girls and we had some cocktails and salads on the porch overlooking Swan Lake. The view is perfect for a dinner on a summer night. Very few bugs. I enjoyed a Cajun Grilled Chicken Salad. Rather than fiesta ranch that came with the salad I opted for French. The salad comes with a couple slices of garlic toast. They put a good amount of chicken on the salad. It was delicious and so filling. I washed it down with Wisconsin's very own Spotted Cow. I'll definitely be back.

    14 Oz. Ribeye w/Wild Rice

Off the main road (WI33) at Portage Country Club, overlooking beautiful Swan Lake. Don't judge the food quality of the establishment by its exterior. The building, which also serves as the clubhouse, is a work in progress. Since we visited in late March, business was slow, which afforded us excellent table service. Chad (the owner) makes a to die for 14 oz. ribeye with good flavor, with no added seasoning. Panko coated onion rings and beer batter chese curds fried to perfection were an excellent appitizer. Kates triple layer chocolate cake with layers of chocolate gonache extremely dense. At least a pound of chocolate heaven on a plate.

Service was pleasant enough but s-l-o-w. Restaurant was not busy but there was one large party of about a dozen which seemed to overwhelm the two servers. For the entire time we were there we didn't see any front of house staff (manager, host, bussers) other than two servers. Cleanliness was poor. We were there for over an hour and tables near us were not cleared or cleaned at all. Dirty dishes with leftover food sitting on them for the duration of our meal. Food all over the floor. Not an appetizing atmosphere. All-in-all poor value for the money.

I ordered the Chicken Piccata. That is one of my favorite dishes at most Italian restaurants. This looked like boiled chicken breasts, no color at all. The "lemon" sauce was like water and did not taste like lemon at all. More like vinegar. The "grilled"asparagus was sitting in the water and tasted boiled, not grilled. Mashed potatoes were decent, but sitting in a bowl of watery sauce did not help. Do not order this if you are expecting traditional Piccata. The angel hair pasta with "marinara" sauce my husband ordered was very bland, it was more like canned regular tomato sauce stirred into pasta...no joke. We wonder if there is a different owner, and cook. The nice young man who was our server was very good. We will not be back, and that is sad aswe liked it before.

You do get to try up to five tastings of your choice, which was nice since you can double up on a tasting if you really enjoy the taste. I'm not sure when this place was built, but everything felt clean & new and the seating was very comfortable. The menu had a nice variety of entrees, but we were definitely disappointed that they don't offer an appetizer selection for lunch. My husband ordered the jalapeño chicken flatbread and I went with the roasted vegetable risotto with grilled chicken. We both really enjoyed our dishes and did share so we didn't have food envy. It was really kind of them to offer us a complimentary dessert when they found out today was our 25th wedding anniversary; we selected the bread pudding and it was delicious!! Other than not having apps available on the lunch menu, our only other gripe was that it took forever to get our bill and pay.

They have big leather swivel chairs that are actually comfy. The bar was very lively on a weekday at 4 pm. Watermelon mojito was one of the best I've ever had , followed it up with a great espresso martini. Ordered the fried clams appetizer which was good but many pieces were so small and thin that they seemed pure batter and no clam. The escargo was covered in a mexi-cheese blend that I found strange at first but tastes delicious- just more like Wisconsin escargo then French . They came with delicious crispy bread bites that we soaked up all the extra cheese and juices. Broccoli cheddar soup was the best I've ever had and absolutely loved the steak medallions with onions and dude of sauce . Steak was perfectly cooked. I loved this place and can't wait to come back

The original bar is in the old darker section - more traditional for a supper club.. We stopped there for some old fashions before dinner - they were solid. Service was very good. We ordered our meals after some tough decision making after snacking on their very tasty warm rolls. I tried their special of crabbed stuff shrimp. Five large shrimp that were very good with a baked potato on the side. My wife got the encrusted salmon and was surprised that it was encrusted in a bread crumb cheese mixture. She really enjoyed it. Our friends got the chicken with pasta and the walleye - two thumbs up. We decided to try their ice cream drinks for dessert. One pink squirrel and one brandy Alexander. Both were good but we have had better and bigger versions at other supper clubs. Prices were typical for a supper club - not cheap.
