The Long Version: I think this food truck is relatively new (as of 2026). They sell Thai food and don't shy away from the use of pungent fish sauce, lol. This likely means the food is more authentic and the place doesn't tone down it's flavours and aromas to suit local palates, which I always commend, even if the authenticity is sometimes too much for me, lol. My dad loves Pad Thai (actually all noodles, but especially Pad Thai, and also Japchae, but that's another story), so while he was fixing my car, I took his car (with his permission) and went out to Thai Lotus to pick up some Pad Thai for him. The food truck is very modest-looking. They have a branded sticker but the menu is hand-written and taped onto the truck. It's definitely not like those fancy food trucks with colourful and eye-catching designs all over the truck. I got a chicken Pad Thai ($15) and also 2 pieces of Taro Coconut dessert for my mom ($2 per piece) since she loves taro and it sounded interesting. Even though it was a Friday and the menu said they only have this dessert on Wednesdays and Thursdays, I asked about it's availability anyway and luckily for me, they had some! The smell was too pungent for my preferences but the taste was not fishy. The portion was a good amount, but there wasn't too much meat in it. The tofu pieces were too hard and chewy for my liking. However, my dad loved it so I was happy. The Taro Coconut dessert was a scoop of boiled and mashed taro inside a small cup made of banana leaf with coconut milk poured on top. I rarely see this dessert on any Thai restaurant menu. My mom loved it. I had a tiny taste and it was great. The taro was coarsely mashed so it still had nice chunks of taro in it. The dessert was not too sweet, which I appreciated. It was my first time having this dessert but I would say it's very similar to the Vietnamese dessert called Chè Khoai Môn except without the sweet glutinous rice or sago. They only accept cash or debit. No credit cards. They are parked in the Apple Saddlery parking lot along with a few other food trucks. Lots of free parking for customers. The Short Version: Small cozy Vietnamese restaurant…read more Delicious food, affordable prices and pleasant service. The Long Version: I regret not having tried Feifung Kitchen earlier. They opened around 2023. Their story is well known in Ottawa foodie circles. They were the owners of the Mee Fung Vietnamese Restaurant that opened in 1987. They then moved and re-opened as the New Mee Fung, which they ran for decades. Then sold the New Mee Fung and retired in 2022. But in 2023 they came out of retirement and opened Feifung Kitchen. I can't imagine still working in my 70s but we were served by the owner himself and he really looked much younger than 70. I guess maybe that's the secret, to keep doing something you love. I had been to the New Mee Fung back in 2018 and despite it being so popular and raved about by so many Ottawa foodies, I thought it was just ok, so wasn't in a hurry to try Feifung Kitchen. They must have been having a bad day at the New Mee Fung when I went (or I've heard rumours that they had sold the New Mee Fung briefly but then returned to being the owners (?) so maybe my visit was when the restaurant was under different ownership? I don't know). Anyway, I really enjoyed the food at Feifung Kitchen! My husband wasn't all that hungry, so we ordered vegetarian spring rolls (2 for $5), meat spring rolls (2 for $5) and a bowl of seafood and pork rice noodles soup with fried shrimp cake (Hu Tieu Nam Vang) ($17) to share. The spring rolls were delicious. They were long and skinny but had adequate filling. They were crispy on the outside and the vegetarian ones had tofu, cabbage, carrots and vermicelli in them, while the meat ones had ground pork, cabbage and vermicelli. Easily one of the best spring rolls I've had at a restaurant in Ottawa. The Hu Tieu Nam Vang was delicious. The broth wasn't too salty and the toppings were generous. There were 3 fish balls, 3 dill fish cakes, 2 slices of Cha Lua (Vietnamese pork sausage) and a large deep-fried shrimp cake. The portion of rice noodles was very good and there were bean sprouts, Bok Choy, green onions and cilantro (to my husband's chagrin, lol). I really liked the dill fish cakes, but all the ingredients were tasty. The only thing that would have made this soup better is if they offered tapioca noodles (which is the type of noodles this soup traditionally comes with, but I realize it's more expensive and may not sell too well considering local tastes). Service was courteous and pleasant. We were offered a pot of complimentary hot tea when we were seated. And we were also given complimentary sesame balls filled with mung bean paste for dessert. (I can't eat sesame seeds, and my husband doesn't like this type of dessert, but my mom loves it, so we took the dessert to go and I gave it to my mom the next day, and she enjoyed it). The restaurant is small and modest looking with casual decor. I did use the washroom and noticed the washroom was very clean. They sell some Vietnamese items that are harder to find in Ottawa like Banh Xeo and Banh Cuon, and deep-fried spring rolls made with rice paper instead of the more common wheat wrappers (they call them Saigon Spring Rolls).
