They have been in business a long time. I've shopped there since before they moved to Ventura Blvd., when they were in a smaller strip mall in Tujunga Village, so they are like old friends. I rarely need the full array of products a contractor requires. It's a much easier experience than the overwhelming impersonal feeling of shopping at the bigger chain hardware stores. I have shopped at North Hollywood Hardware for nearly three decades and have always tried to support family-owned local businesses, even when prices are higher. Until recently, I considered this store a neighborhood staple. I stopped by the store on a Saturday afternoon intending to purchase another garden hose nozzle. This was my third defective brass hose nozzle purchased from this store, which is why I was asking questions before buying yet another replacement of the same old-style brass nozzle many of us grew up using to wash our parents' cars. While browsing, I also had additional items in hand totaling well over $100. When I asked questions about the nozzle, the employee assisting customers (who I later learned is the nephew of a long-time employee) repeatedly interrupted me and dismissed my questions. I then asked for brief help locating a single light bulb after already spending time searching on my own. He said he would "point me in the right direction" but needed to return to the front, then walked away mid-interaction. I set the additional items down and proceeded to check out with only the hose nozzle. While waiting, I quietly asked William whether the individual was his son, and William replied that he was his nephew. The nephew overheard this and immediately escalated the situation. He raised his voice, demanded "WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM," called me a "sad old man," and told me to "GET THE F*** OUT OF MY STORE," all in front of several other customers, who appeared visibly uncomfortable. The escalation was sudden, loud, and completely unnecessary. I attempted to de-escalate and did not engage further. I left the store and will not be returning. I contacted the owners directly by email after the incident to give them an opportunity to address the situation privately. After allowing reasonable time for a response, I did not receive one. That lack of follow-up ultimately informed my decision to share this experience publicly, as it reflects how concerns from long-standing customers are handled. read more

Can't say enough good about these guys. First, you walk in and they are playing classic rock at a respectable volume, like not quite a party, but that's the vibe, and all the people working there are always so nice seem genuinely happy to be there and to help you. Ladies don't come here. They'll patronize you for wanting to buy a screwdriver. Not all women are dense to tools. I came in knowing exactly what I needed and patiently waited while the man assisted another customer. He then looks over at me and the screw driver and stares "umm that's really small I highly doubt it's the size you need" I told him it was and I would just like to pay so I can leave. He doubles down and says something along the lines that I didn't know what I was talking about and demanded to know the project I was working on so he could get me the right one. Now usually I don't get upset for unsolicited advice but when it comes in a condescending, rude tone while insulting my intelligence I take it personally. I wasn't asking for help. I don't know why he was hard pressed to insult my intelligence. Fun fact. My dads been a contractor for 40 years and a carpenter even longer. I grew up being taught about tools, wood work and carpentry. Now I perform all the repairs and build things for my job. This is an awesome neighborhood hardware store. The people who work there are always friendly and helpful and they always have good music playing and there is just an overall awesome vibe that you just can't get at the big chain stores. The store seems tiny from the outside but walk in and it's bigger than it looks (Timelord technology?!) and the amount of inventory they have might surprise you. The layout is mostly convenient especially when it comes to screws, bolt, nuts, and other fasteners. The way they have everything organized makes it much easier to compare sizes and find the ones you need as well as their coordinating parts. I recently got a bunch of big lag screws and carriage bolts to hang some heavy gates and they were way cheaper here than at the big chain store. Very high quality, too. They have an impressive selection of lights. This isn't the best place to go if you're looking to pick up a bunch of lumber but for sandpaper, fasteners, adhesives, tools, paint supplies, electrical boxes and wiring, etc they are great. Good selection of sprinkler heads and irrigation system components, and again they are laid out in a way that makes it easy to navigate and compare. Some stuff here is a bit more expensive than it would be at Home Depot (which is understandable) and some stuff is cheaper. For me, the convenience and the atmosphere are generally worth spending an extra couple bucks but sometimes I save money here so overall I would say it balances out. I noticed a reviewer felt that these guys were being invasive by asking her about what she was working on but I suspect that might have been a misunderstanding. I'm a girl too and these guys are not condescending or patronizing. Yes - they sometimes ask questions about what kind of project you are buying stuff for, but I get the impression that they do that with the intention of starting up a conversation and possibly being helpful (and maybe with the hope of selling more stuff, but that's the nature of retail so don't hold it against them). read more
