Norma's food is great however their management practices not so much. We have an organization that has been booked for a couple years for a reoccurring date. We have a meeting next week and just found out that we've been bumped for another group. They didn't contact us; we only found out when we called to confirm our standing reservation. Lovely breakfast with friends at Norma's this week. I've now managed to eat at all of their locations. Yay! Here's the deal: Norma's is homecooking, old fashioned helpful service with a smile and good value for the money. My breakfast (short stack with bacon) was plate-sized pancakes with five super-crispy slices of bacon for $6. It was 2 meals. (Yay for leftovers!) They are still new, so expect a few hiccups as they're working out staffing and developing a routine. But everyone deserves a chance to find their way, especially if they do a great job of treating you right along the way. I'll be back. Well l imagined this location would seat more than it does. That said, we came on Father's Day and the wait wasn't too bad (under :30 min). First comes a tasty yeast roll and cornbread muffin BUT, Norma you've broken a Cardinal rule which is You shall serve NO HOMEMADE BREADS WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN REAL BUTTER! I had heard so many good things about Norma's that I could not wait to try it. I love home cooking. We got in quickly. It was a typical diner type atmosphere with an older clientele. The menu is big with plenty of choices. I got the chicken fried steak. It was okay. It was kind of bland, as were the mashed potaotes and gravy and green beans. The green beans were hardly edible. They were seemingly out of a can and very mealy and overcooked. I find that when the clientele of a restaurant leans towards the older side, the food is never very flavorful. It seems like they undersalt and underseason due to sodium concerns or something. It greatly impacts the food flavor. It's funny when older people talk about how food quality has gone down, b/c it doesn't taste as good as when they were young. Maybe it's b/c they go to places that don't salt or season their foods very well. Back to the food. My husband got a salad with fried chicken and did not enjoy it at all. It was mostly iceberg lettuce, which is bland, watery, and has very little nutrition. The chicken, like much of my food had no flavor in the battering. They need to season everything--each layer of food. It would up their game so much. There are a few tweaks they could make that would really just make their food go from meh to great. The food here isn't even as good as the Black-Eyed Pea they replaced, and their food was average. We both agreed we wouldn't go back. read more

I was a little leery of coming here after reading some of the negative reviews, but love home cooking so took a chance. We were seated promptly and almost immediately our server brought menus and took our drink orders. He came back with our drinks and took our order shortly thereafter. The food was delivered in a reasonable time frame. Overall the service was excellent. The food was good (not as good as my momma's would have been but that's a pretty high bar!). I happened to find Norma's via YELP after the wait was too long at my favorite breakfast spot, The International Pancake House. Seemed like a popular place, lots of people coming in on a Saturday morning, I'm not from here so I didn't know. The place was nice enough and it wasn't a wait so I was seated immediately. The breakfast menu looked pretty good, but I was disappointed that there was no combo that included pancakes! How sway?!?! After much deliberation, I decided on just a basic breakfast combo with bacon, scrambled eggs, grits and wheat toast. The first thing I noticed was that the eggs were NOT FRESH SCRAMBLED.......bad sign! I promptly asked the waitress to replace them and she did. The grits were unlike any I've ever tasted, even after I doctored them up a bit I still didn't like them. I feel the portions here are a lot smaller than the Dallas location. Service was okay and needs a little refining. The restaurant has a lot of seating. The food is good. I'm not big on breakfast but their chicken fried steak is just as great as the others. It just was quite smaller than the last time I had it at Dallas. Food was fresh, though took a good minute to come out. We went Saturday morning and they were pretty busy but didn't have to wait for a table. We all ordered toast with our meals but we got different kinds of bread. One person got regular white bread toast and another had some herbs in their bread. I was on my way to B&N the other day and saw that Norma's Cafe was having a grand opening and my husband was very hungry, so we stopped by here. We have been to one in Carrollton(Addison?)many years ago and it was good and we were happy to have this place close to us. My husband ordered Fried mushrooms, chicken tenders with 3 sides choose from(he had a soup, salad and something else)and root beer. I ordered my old time favorite since I moved to Texas: Migas. I must mention that our server was very nice, friendly, kind and attentive. She made me feel very welcome. I give the service 5 stars. Although they gave us big portions of food in addition to what we ordered(they brought us big basket of corn bread, I took them home to my dog children and they loved every crumb of it), the quality was not there. My husband said that the fried mushrooms were very hot(temperature), but very greasy and his chicken tenders were very bland and no seasoning with uncooked fries and the soup had bunch of vegetables in it and very boring. My Migas was ok. I didn't care for the home fries. I don't like to complain unless it's really bad. Honestly, I like the Migas at Pancake House much better, because it's more tasty. My husband talked to the manager and she was very nice and took it off our bill and offered us other things like dessert. The place was packed with people and very busy. Over all, this place is not our cup of tea, but we're glad to had tried it and to write about it. read more

Visiting from California! The food was phenomenal. Better quality than we could ever have imagined. Portions were large, couldn't finish my plate! Picked up dinner and brought it home. So disappointed. The mashed potatoes taste as if sugar is added. I've never had sweetened mashed potatoes. They are gross. My other side dish is okra. Something I've gotten from Norma's before. But these taste as if they were soaked in jalapeño juice. They are spicy hot. Burn the tongue hot. What's going on over there? Sadly we both fit potatoes a s okra as our sides. Two of the dinner rolls are hard. Dried out, crunchy hard. At least the pot roast is as expected. (Yummy). But I'm not happy with this experience, nor with our previous one, (they gave us a credit for that one. The only thing that was good about my meal was the service, the root beer, and cheese sticks. The food was extremely bland and mediocre at best. The chicken "fried" chicken was very flimsy. The breading seemed as if it had been reheated so much to the point where it was now a mushy mess. I am very disappointed. I could've went to a fast food chain and gotten better tasting food. The audacity of their sign to say "If you like our food, tell your friends. If not, come back, you'll get used to it." First time eating at Norma's. I've heard they have huge portions and great food. I'm not giving 5 stars based on 2 things. 1 being the amount of time we had to wait ( at 3:45 pm) to get our food. And 2 because the sides weren't very big for the price. I ordered the pork chops and thought they were great! Not dry like most places. My husband had the meatloaf and thought it was pretty good. We went there Friday early we waited a few minutes for a table but 20 minutes for anyone to wait on us. No water nothing. I finally asked if we had a waitress. Nobody seemed to be waiting on anyone wasn't busy unless they were all in the private room. We got up & left! No patience for bad service! We use to go there all the time! Lot of staff changes since COVID. They've shrunk the menu which is fine, food still good but service has gone down the tubes! Won't be going back! Was highly impressed with Normas Cafe. 35 years ago I was taken to the Oak Cliff location and thought it was great and was going to return again. I'm sorry it took this long. Upon entering the Plano location the atmosphere takes you back. The menu is simple and loaded with my favorite dinners. The CFS and the chicken & dressing were very good, just like mom used to make (almost). The staff was exceptional, Savannah was attentive without being overbearing. I promise myself that I won't read or even look at the negative reviewers ever again - UNLESS I see a huge consistency of one or two stars from them regarding any site's review. Okay, so here's my take on Norma's of Plano: I've eaten there four times for dinner in the last two weeks. I've had their chicken fried steak, meat loaf, pot roast, and pork chops with the different choices of veggies. Their food is excellent. Their service is excellent. The atmosphere is fun. The desserts are absolutely decadent: I highly recommend any of their incredible sugary delights... especially the coconut cream pie! Now, just to let you know, I've only had one of their desserts and it was halved with my wife. read more

I don't know if I have ever given a place five stars but the food tonight was fantastic. It's my first visit here after dining at the original in Dallas. I ordered chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes, brown gravy, mac & cheese, beans and a side salad. Everything tasted so good! Norma's even gave me an extra side of their cream gravy with my order, so I got to try both and they were delicious and REAL homemade beef and cream gravy. So good! The side salad with raspberry vinaigrette was also fresh and delicious, and the rolls and cornbread went really well for sopping up the gravy and mashed potatoes. Norma's Cafe is well worth the drive from Richardson to get some authentic comfort food that is difficult to find in the area. It's as good as I remember after visiting the original in Oak Cliff years ago. I also have to give a shout out to the girls and cooks who took my takeout order and got the food to me within 5-7 minutes after walking through the door on a busy night. I plan on being back a LOT and grabbing some dessert on my next visit. read more

Norma's is typical diner food. Lots of choices, both main dish and plenty of sides / veggies. It's comfort food, but it's not home cooking fresh, as in the veggies are out of a can. I guess that's what happens when you expand into multiple locations. I still like Mama's Daughter's Diner, the original, the best. Maybe it's the atmosphere. But this place and the other Normas' will do when you are looking for simple meat veggies and potatoes. The desserts are probably the best! We were very disappointed today at Norma's . We were literally thrown out, six were sitting in a booth and I had asked if we could move to 2 tables and they said yes, at that time the hostess which was very rude and no manners told us that we could not do that and had no options. It was so embarrassing that she was telling us in front of everybody that we had to move. We had just received our food. I hope if you go there they treat you with dignity. Pi day 2018! Place was crazy busy! Stopped in and ordered their Chicken Fried Steak, home peeled and mashed potatoes, green beans, and a side salad. The Chicken fried steak was O.K. but needed more seasoning, and was a bit greasy. The mashed potatoes were not nearly as good as I was hoping for. They were not whipped well and kinda grainy. The green beans were from a can and had been cooked to death so they were hard to get on a fork without exploding. The service was pretty good considering the number of people that were being served. Recent place in Plano opened last year and still holds the same tradition that other locations have. Place is kinda tucked into the shopping center so you might miss it when driving by but it's near the Barnes and Noble bookstore. Took some out of town family that were here for UTD's graduation ceremonies and showed them what the local Texas flavor is about. The Ole #7 for breakfast can't be beat.
