We do NOT recommend Nora's for catering your special event. We booked with Nora's for a wedding of 100 on Jan 2021 (a year in advance), for a total of $10,000. We had a great initial experience with the former event coordinator, Adrian Vargas. A few months later, we were informed that we will get a new contact person, Alexa Uribe. That was the LAST we heard from this catering company until 3.5 weeks before the event. Summary: Food was great, but the service left a bad taste in our mouths.
PRE-EVENT:
- After her first 'check-in' 1 month before our event, Alexa was largely irresponsive to several voicemails and emails, (although apologetic for her 'injury', but not for ignoring several calls...UNTIL she answered from the other groom's unrecognized number)
- Scheduling through Calendly was ineffective since she didn't respond to the booking requests. The grooms were never received a Tasting because Alexa didn't book it.
- Alexa was 3 HOURS late to the site visit (with more excuses and a smile)
ACTUAL EVENT:
- Alexa had confirmed in the planning that ICE for the bar would be provided: The VERY first thing she asked about when she arrived at the event: "Where is the ice?"
- All table garnishes that were paid for (olives, almonds), but many were not delivered to the tables
- The contract and posted schedule clearly noted the timing of setting up and breaking down the furniture. Her team did a half-assed job in the set up, and left dirty tables for most of the evening when they could have been cleaned off and packed away promptly after the cake service. Guests were dancing around dirty tables.
- The cake cutting and service was literally a hack job (NOT by the CHEF as was stipulated in the contract), with messy plates thrown on a table 2 at a time, requiring guests to line up for sloppy slivers of a handout. The cake top was 'reserved', but thrown into the freezer uncovered...On. Its. Side. The carnage of $1,000 cakes was left in the garage for hours and rendered inedible.
- The condition of the afterparty venue was even worse: Tables and linens were not cleared and put away, rental party ware were not properly returned to the crates, as was written in the contract. (The rental company was so horrified by the lack of proper cleanup of their equipment and also blacklisted them from their catering recommendations.)
MORE DETAILS FROM THE GROOMS:
- "All of the staff were very nice and tried hard, but they were obviously untrained and had no leadership. They did not know the ingredients of the food when asked by guests with dietary restrictions. The coordinator was dressed unprofessionally (usually caterer's have uniforms, she wore street clothes.)
- We had pre-chilled a large portion of the beverages. We showed Alexa what and where those items were and they were not touched, instead warm beer and wine was served.
- When the meatballs were passed, there was no toothpick provided, guests were forced to use their fingers to eat them.
- Alexa did not instruct the bartender (who was very nice and did a great job) on the ingredients of the couple's signature drink.
- The leftovers were just left in aluminum foil trays with no covers, the grooms at 11:00 at night had to find the covers for them. Some were overfilled and greasy on the sides. The amount of leftovers was absolutely overwhelming. The leftovers should have been portioned off into manageable sizes they could have either been refrigerated or be given to guests. The majority of the food, therefore, was left out overnight and thrown away. We were oversold on the amount of food needed when it came to the paella and sides.
- We were undersold on the amount of appetizers. At one point, we were asking if there were anymore appetizers and were told no. The next morning, we found, left out, not refrigerated, a tray of meatballs and piquillo peppers."
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Although the paella and food, chefs and bartender were GREAT, the coordinator and staff are NOT polished or responsive catering professionals. For the frustration and anxiety Alexa has caused, Nora's is not worth $10,000. We wanted to be SPECIFIC as possible for credibility of our experience, and so you can go in with open eyes.
