Whew, where do I even begin? Our wedding food caterer got COVID at the last second - in came California Rose at the eleventh hour through a personal referral. Chef Dov and Jenn CRUSHED it to where I actually wished that I booked them originally. They took care of everything for our backyard wedding, from the rentals to servers to the AMAZING food. There were a good amount of guests with very strict dietary requests and not only was Jenn & her team able to accommodate, not one person was missed or delayed in getting their meal. On top of their amazing service, the food was *chef's kiss* delicious! We all know how standard wedding menus can be, but our couple stepped out of the comfort zone and some fun menu items (can you say fried chicken sliders?!) which tasted delicious when we were able to take 5 to devour our meals. We booked California Rose as our wedding caterer. Our food was amazing, and the final coordination went great. + Food: We had a ton of comments from friends and family that they loved the food at the wedding. Some friends even asked us for specifics on the menu after the wedding, which Dov gladly helped us with! We were worried that with our budget, we wouldn't be able to have great food at our wedding, but Dov helped us stay within our price limit with a quality meal. + Coordination: Coordination leading up to the big day was initially a bit fruatrating, but in the end everything worked out for the better. At the start, we worked with Angy, who would often ask us to meet in-person or to schedule a call. However, it often felt like there wasn't a clear agenda or points to discuss on these calls, so it felt like wasted time. Additionally, it felt like Angy would often talk at my husband and I, rather than listen to some of our requests/questions. A month before the wedding, Dov gave me a call to let me know Angy had left the team, and instead I'd be working with Kassandra and Alicia. I appreciated that Dov gave me a personal call here to deliver the news. And while for most brides, this change so close to the big day would've felt unnerving, I was extremely happy working with Kassandra and Alicia. Kassandra was very attentive and detail-oriented in the month leading up to the wedding, and so I felt completely at ease with her taking the lead! She was responsive to my questions, helped problem solve when hiccups came up, and was just a sweetheart. + The details: It's super clear to me how important it is to Dov that every detail runs smoothly at a wedding. After the wedding ceremony, my husband and I scheduled 30 minutes of wedding portraits with our relatives. Smiling for 30 minutes for portraits is harder than it sounds! At some point, Dov came over to personally bring some glasses of wine to my relatives even though our portrait site was a bit of a walk from our cocktail hour. And while Dov served wine, he must've overheard me say how thirsty I was for water to the groom. He quickly ran to the kitchen to find an ice chilled water bottle, which made the rest of picture taking a breeze! We were both very impressed with food quality and selection and the service. I believe that our host were also pleased on how they and all of their guests were treated. We had California Rose Catering as our caterers for our wedding and my oh my it was the right choice! We had a very particular palate in mind and Dov delivered and then some. Our guests couldn't stop commenting on the food; many said it was the best they've ever had. Kaitlin and the team were extremely well organized, worked well with our day of planner, and we were also amazing in the way that they tried to ensure we well fed throughout the day! Bio-Rad ordered this catering for 2 days. The first day was lasagna and garlic bread. The second day was BBQ link, chicken, and potato salad. The lasagna was alright. Garlic bread was a little on the salty side. And the gluten free baked ziti was served with cold cheese. My manager said she bit into an actual frozen piece of cheese. Because of this, I felt that this place deserved 3 stars. The BBQ was a different story. The chicken was tender and the sauce was finger lickin' good. Their homemade croutons made their salad better than normal. The potato salad had a lot going on inside. It was hard to tell what exactly was in it, but it didn't make it taste bad. California Rose catered our wedding this past weekend, and I cannot say enough good things about them! My husband (then fiance) and I did tastings with two catering companies. Our first tasting with another company was pretty typical--good but nothing special, but then we met with California Rose and were completely blown away. Dov clearly loves to cook, and even though we had a tight budget he really wanted to present us with options that we would love. He even added a bonus item onto our tasting menu because we had told him we had tried a really unappealing short rib dish at our first tasting, and he couldn't let us think all short ribs were like that. When we left, there was no doubt in our mind that we were going to hire them, but we were seriously conflicted over which dishes to pick because they were all so good! Fast forward to the wedding, and the day-of food was amazing. We received rave reviews all night from our guests--including a friend who's a chef in SF--saying it was some of the best wedding food they have ever had. Top dishes of the night were definitely the corncake hors d'oeuvres, brussel sprouts with bacon and wild mushrooms, and the milk-braised pork (if you're a pork fan, TRY THIS). Our guests were also blown away by the stationed hors d'oeuvres table, which was full of amazing cheeses, fruits and charcuterie. Sadly, I never got to see the full presentation b/c I was too busy talking with my guests, but they did prepare a small plate for me so I could at least taste everything =) Angy also did an amazing job running everything on the day-of, as evidenced by the fact that I didn't think about the logistics once--everything just ran seamlessly =) If you care about food and want to serve your wedding guests something special, you need to talk to California Rose. The quality of food was amazing and at a far more reasonable price than many of the catering companies I reached out to in the city. Chef Dov, Jenn, and the rest of the CA Rose team helped us create the pescatarian, family-style menu of our dreams for our wedding of 130 in Piedmont on 4/22/22. We have loved every aspect of working with them - they provided us with a cute and delicious set-down tasting, Jenn coordinated ALL of our rentals and made our floorplans, they helped us figure out our signature cocktails/booze situation, helped us design the perfect menu for our guests, and gave us endless guidance and advice along the way. Chef Dov is chill, warm, incredibly skilled, and just generally a wonderful person and business owner. Our wedding process was a sheer nightmare. As our guest list grew, then shrank, then grew again, we had Dov and Angy by our side all along the bumpy ride of wedding planning. We started at one venue, a quaint gallery I was sure would work for our 180 guests. Dov met us there to check the venue for their kitchen... which was non existant. But he guaranteed us that if we could really wanted to have it there, and were willing to rent the equipment, he would make it work for us, worry free. Fast forward about a month later. We finally decided that renting all the kitchen equipment wouldn't be worth the cost so we switched venues. Without skipping a beat, Angy was right there with me planning on how to create the wedding we wanted for the guest list that had now grown to 220. We needed a tent, as it was outdoors in San Francisco and they worked with their vendor contacts to find us just what we needed. Then it was on to the tasting. Dov created a menu that was no only delicious, but beautiful in color as well. (Beet gastrique! Chard salad!). Our parents, who accompanied us, were completely blown away. It was unlike anything they'd ever seen served at a wedding before and I could see how excited they were getting. We finalized our menu, decided on a couple of signature cocktails they would pour for us, and chose our linens. Done! Not so fast. Our venue came back to us saying that because we were installing a tent, our capacities would have to go down. Like, way down. Like, lower than the amount of guests we were inviting. Before I could shed a single tear, Angy and Dov were telling me not to worry, and jumped into researching what we could do with this new restriction. They even called the fire department and harassed our venue coordinator until they got the answers they wanted. Talk about being on your team! In the end it was sorted our in a matter of days and I hardly had to lift a finger. By our wedding day, we were so looking forward, and anxiously awaiting, how everything was going to turn out.... It was flawless. I myself have worked in the wedding industry for years and have seen the ups and downs, but I couldn't believe how smooth things went. Angy was directing traffic, and Dov kept the food coming. Duck spring rolls, ahi bites, polenta cakes, miso cod, hanger steak, and wine! So much generous pouring of the wine. And Gretchen was on hand to serve our every whim. They then expertly broke down two tables and made us a dance space without a hitch in our programming. We danced all night and guests enjoyed the dessert bar which the team so beautifully presented. They treated us like family and I will never forget how they saved our wedding day! I love CRC!! Full disclosure: I used to work for them on a part-time basis, and through that experience I could really see their business from top to bottom. They are EXCELLENT cooks, devoted to high-quality materials, cleanliness, and most importantly LOVE in the food. California Rose dropped the ball on us. Ten days after confirming our Christmas party reservation and 2 weeks before our event we hadn't heard from them, so I called. She said there had been a "communication problem" and they weren't going to be able to cater our event. I was stunned. When exactly were they going to tell us? The day before? When I asked if it is was because my order was too small she said yes and because was a busy time for them. I would have understood if I had been told this at the time I made the reservation - or even when I chose the dishes that were to be served. The fact is they never bothered to call me and tell me we were cancelled. So go ahead and use California Rose if you have a big order and deep pockets, but if you are small maybe they will drop you like they did us. read more

California Rose is amazing! They catered our wedding on March 20th and not only was the food delicious, they service was impeccable and the whole process of dealing with them was easy and comforting. Ok update - After writing my previous review, I was contacted by Dov who explained what had happened with the business at the time I was expecting a response. They were hacked, all emails received at that time went into cyberspace nowheres-ville, and had an absolute horror of a time getting everything back to sorts. I expect also, that this happening right before the holidays (many caterers busiest time of the year), things were understandably horrific for them. I've now had a few really lovely email exchanges and we're in the process of building a menu which suits my taste and budget. What I hadn't realised was the fact that California Rose seem to be willing to be as much or as little involved in the process as the client likes, which is great. They can even sort non-food related issues in event hosting such as flowers, tablecloths, the works. So, we're back on track and I definitely hope we are able to work together. read more

California Rose catered our wedding in Oakland and I was blown away by how amazing they were. Let's start with the food - Dov is a top-notch chef. The food at our tasting was amazing and he & his crew were able to replicate it for our 100 guests on the big day. He was great about accommodating some food requests (veggie & gluten-free), and our guests have been raving about it since. Dov is big on local, sustainable ingredients - which I'm hugely into as well. He pushed us to try some new things and I was very pleased with the results. Nothing was too crazy that guests would be scared by it, but way nicer than most catered events I've been to. On to Angy & the event production side - she is amazing. On the ball, responsive to emails/texts/phone calls, and I was really impressed by how great the venue looked when we arrived. She was as cool as a cucumber throughout the event, and if there were any major issues I was blissfully unaware. CR's office is laid-back, as are the staff members. I hired California Rose Catering to provide light refreshments and a hosted bar for a Celebration of Life for my father-in-law. I chose them because of their awesome Yelp reviews, ability to offer vegetarian fare, and responsiveness. We had 3 weeks to plan the event and Chef Dov himself was my contact. Overall, the service was good and the food was delicious, but a few minor things led me to deduct a star. First, I want to note that he and his staff were very friendly and professional. Chef was very responsive via email (which was my choice). We had an initial phone call but I preferred email for subsequent communications. I planned this for my mother-in-law and we had some uncertainty re: menu since we scheduled it for 2-4 pm (e.g., just fruit/cheese and lemonade?). Chef was very patient as I sent many emails. We ultimately settled on a fruit/cheese display, mini sandwiches (mozzarella and basil), corncakes, and jerk chicken meatballs, as well as a hosted bar featuring wine, beer, lemonade, and water. I never met Chef, as he wasn't there when I arrived at 1 pm but he said he was in constant communication by phone with his staff. Re: the food: I was disappointed by the fruit/cheese/nuts display, but, thankfully, I really liked the other options. When I went to get some fruit and cheese for my daughters soon after they set out the platters, I was surprised that there were only 2 types of cheese: Brie and Muenster. I usually see 3-4 selections, including a variety of textures and flavors (e.g., a Blue cheese, an aged cheese, etc.). It was only those 2 cheeses, cherries, raspberries, grapes, and watermelon slices on a platter, plus 2 small bowls of nuts and a bowl of olives. I also had to ask staff to put out some knives, as soft cheeses like Brie and Muenster are not easily sliced with tongs (which is all they had on the table). The plastic butter knives the staff later provided weren't what I expected, and frankly ruined the otherwise pretty display. I loved the mini-sandwiches (marinated mozzarella, basil remoulade, pickled red onions, and mixed greens on a sliced baguette), which were displayed in Chinese steamer baskets. I was very tempted to wrap a few in napkins and slip them in my purse at the end, as they were that good! I didn't, though, and still regret it. I wish they had included labels/signs so guests would know what each item was (e.g., Jerk Chicken Meatballs). I overheard a few guests mention being surprised by the kick (which they would have known if they had labeled them as Jerk Chicken Meatballs as opposed to guests assuming they were the standard Swedish Meatballs). Chef told me the next day that he had given staff signs but it was too windy. I never saw them on my 3-4 trips to the food tables. My mother-in-law only got to try the corncakes (she didn't get a chance to eat or drink anything else because of all the guests talking with her!) and she liked them. I found them difficult to eat as finger food after I had dressed them with sauce. I thought they'd be small like the other Yelper's photo, but they were palm-sized. Thus, I actually grabbed a toothpick to try to pick it up rather than picking it up in my hand. We did not have utensils as I had asked for all finger food (we had over 180 guests on a patio that didn't have enough seating for everyone to use a knife/fork). We also had some miscommunication re: service, as I wrongly assumed the food would all be served at once since we only had 1 hour before the program began. Chef told me the next day after I emailed him that he had asked staff to stagger service. The fruit/cheese platters were set out shortly after 1:30 pm (guests unexpectedly arrived before the 2 pm advertised time), but then the mini-sandwiches, corncakes, and the Jerk Chicken meatballs each came out about 20 minutes apart (the meatballs were not even on the table when we ushered guests inside at 2:30). When the program finished around 3:15 or so, the guests spilled back out to the patio and enjoyed more food. I was relieved to see the meatballs were then available. The beverage station went well and never had a line the few times I glanced over. I am glad Chef had suggested 2 servers there. Yet I was surprised that the two large containers of lemonade ran out so quickly. Apparently, the older crowd preferred lemonade over alcohol! All in all, the event went well and I think the $8,000+ bill was worth it. Chef also offered the china and wineglasses for free (that would have been an additional $300). I was worried about the flow given the large crowd, but he suggested enough staff to manage it well. Plus, we still had a TON of leftover food at 4 pm (seemed like the majority of the meatballs, at least 40+ sandwiches, and 2 platters of corn cakes). I'm sure there are cheaper caterers out there, but the service and quality of food justify using CRC. read more

Dov, Angy, and the rest of the crew catered and managed our wedding in Piedmont in April 2011. There has never been better food at a wedding, period, and the service was flawless. For us the kitchen turned out wonderful Cal-Mex dishes and canapés that would have been at home in the best Bay Area restaurants; for them to serve 120 people at once with food of that quality is almost miraculous. At our first tasting we were warmly greeted by Dov the chef-owner and his mother Rosa, and from that moment on we were always treated with humor, patience, and sensitivity. California Rose absolutely know what they are doing from the kitchen to the table and throughout the entire reception, and that professionalism and experience was tremendously welcome for us since we don't get married often. California Rose prefers family-style service, which delighted us for two reasons: first, it kept the cost very competitive, and more importantly it helped the meal strike just the right note of warmth and community feeling; you can't help but bond with the folks at your table when you're passing your dinners back and forth. We both come from families with traditions of big Sunday dinners, and to be able to recall that at our wedding was the nicest touch. When we arrived a half-hour before the ceremony, there was a power outage throughout the city. Angy, our coordinator, arranged for backup generators on the spot, and the whole thing went off without a hitch. Oh, and did we mention it rained? Through it all Angy and the rest of the staff were calm and professional, and that was just what we needed in those straits. The only drawback is that Dov's commitment to fresh, local produce led him to suggest beets in two of the dishes; when we balked he gave in with good humor and courtesy. He was probably right, but we'll never know, because the squash tamales and the sopapillas de carnitas were so good we never missed the beets. We're teasing, of course: Dov's menu was so tasty and tempting we had trouble whittling it down just a few dishes, and the staff worked hard to help us have everything we wanted. Your wedding is a very personal, very particular day, and you should choose those who help you put it on it with care. You and they have to be of one mind, because you can't call a do-over. With that said, you should consider California Rose first, for they set a standard everyone should aspire to. read more

California Rose and Dov came to Alex and me highly recommended by a cousin who had both catered with him in the past and used him for a friend's recent wedding. She had nothing but wonderful things to say about the food and services provided. From the get go, Dov, Angy and crew were easy to work with. Dov and I first started communicating over email about our favorite foods and types of cuisines. He promptly drafted a menu for us consisting of delicious passed hors d'oeuvre, salad, main entrees and sides. At the tasting, he was very accommodating and allowed my parents to accompany us. Everything was prepared by Dov and he took the time to explain each dish and how the flavors complimented each other. We felt the salad was missing just one thing and he knew exactly just the thing to make it perfect. At the end of the tasting, we knew California Rose was meant to cater the food for our wedding. We had only minor changes to Dov's menu and the four of us were all equally blown away by the food and his willingness to make the menu reflect our favorite eats. After setting the menu, I worked closely with Angy on all the other details, major and minor. She understood the bride's attention to every aspect of the wedding and put many of my uncertainties to rest. Angy handled everything from place settings and napkins to ceremony chairs and high chairs. She was always only a phone call or email away to help me with various parts of the wedding planning. Dov and Angy also conduct a site visit beforehand so that they can assess the facilities and let you know of any issues/concerns you may not have even thought about. This is their business and they are great at what they do! On the day of the wedding, we didn't have to worry about a thing, as it was all in California Rose's capable hands. Alcohol was transported to the site for us as long as it was delivered to them at a designated time before the wedding. During the set-up, we had assistance with favors and LED lights placement. Right after the ceremony, Angy was there with our favorite alcoholic beverages and our very own hors d'oeuvre plate. The guests loved the cocktail hour complete with fruit/cheese platter and passed hors d'oeuvre. We even managed to pop in on Dov and see him in action! The food was served buffet style and our guests had plenty to eat. California Rose even had a delicious doggie plate packed for us for the midnight cravings. For days after the wedding, my family and friends were still raving about the tasty eats like the corn cakes, short ribs, salmon, potatoes gratin and fresh vegetables to name a few. California Rose is where it's at, people. It. Is. Where. It. Is. AT! My best friend sought out the company when she was planning her wedding, and I highly doubt that her special day would have been this complete with any other catering company. Sure another company would have gotten the job done, it's what they're hired to do, right? But Angie and Dov and the rest of the staff, brought such ease and professionalism to the event that I've never previously experienced with any catering company. They're also just such straight up awesome people. I know this because as maid of honor, and put in charge of aspects of the wedding that the bride or groom entrusted in me, I probably had more interactions with these guys than anyone else at the wedding. And you know the feeling when you're sitting down at a restaurant and your waiter serving you has pain and tears in his/her eyes from just hating their life because of horrible working conditions, yes? Yeah, non of that with these guys. It was so obvious that everyone at California Rose loves being a part of it, from cooks to management to wait staff. The passion was there, which I believe was what made it such a great over all experience. Oh, and the food. I've never had a meal that blew my mind with every bite I took, let's just put it like that. If I had to pick a last meal - this would be it. If I could only eat from one place for the rest of my life - this would be the place. Am I making my point? From the first inquiring email to about 2 am on the night of the event they were there for us, making sure we were happy and that everything we needed from them was being provided - and they were. I really hope that I'll get the privilege to work with them again, either helping a friend out or hosting my own event, I have trust in these guys getting the job done, and then some. OMG Had this catering for a work function today... absolutely amazing. Flavors wonderful, taste perfect, ingredients fresh... I'm remembering this name for a long time. Today we had Mexican food.. great, thick corn tortillas, grilled chicken, carnitas, rice with veggies, and 3 amazing salsas. Red pico de gallo, a red chunky salsa with (I think) a slight chipotle flavor and an amazing, chunky green salsa with tomatillos and red onion.. OMG, I'm having a plate of seconds this was so wonderful. This is probably the best catering company my employer has used. Dov, Kassandra, and team did an outstanding job from beginning to end in all parts of the process with a surprise 50th for my wife in my backyard . -It was a pleasure to work with them on the menu and Kassandra was very thorough in her planning, and excellent at making sure I was satisfied -The food was outstanding (especially the black cod and the chicken). I received several compliments and we are enjoying the left overs today, :) -The chefs and service teams were great too: Friendly, helpful, caring, professional, and customer service oriented -The rentals recommended were exactly what we needed and the table settings added a nice bit of elegance. California Rose catered out November 2014 wedding in San Francisco. We couldn't have been happier! I was completely overwhelmed with the process of trying to find a caterer within our budget. Several caterers we contacted actually laughed (snorted?) and said they wouldn't even consider trying to work at a price below $175/head. Welcome to the ridiculous Bay Area wedding industry complex. In comes the breath of fresh air that is California Rose. We had a great experience from day one. I am vegetarian and wanted to make sure we had great vegetarian options, while my mom was extremely skeptical of having a predominantly vegetarian wedding. Given tastings we had with other caterers within our budget, we had sort of resigned ourselves to "meh" food. At our tasting with California Rose (which was so fun!), we were completely blown away by the quality and freshness of the food, on par with great SF restaurants. My mom became chef Dov's biggest fan and couldn't stop raving. No more complaints from her about the vegetarian-friendly menu! Angy (their coordinator) was amazing-I had budgeted to possibly have a "day-of" coordinator but she was so on it that I ended up deciding not to have one (we had a friend who also volunteered as a point person). Angy coordinated everything with our venue and other vendors and took off a lot of stress. She was completely willing to work with my budget and to plan a beautiful meal. On the actual day of the wedding, the food was delicious. For appetizers, we had corn croquettes, handmade sopitos, and burrata bruschetta. For dinner, we had a plated beet and goat cheese salad, sides of quinoa salad and mushroom and brussels sprouts, entrees of stuffed poblano pepper with jerk sauce and seared cod, and a mini-dessert bar. We chose not to have a wedding cake, and they even threw in a delicious triple creme cheese for a "cheese cutting." All the servers and bartenders were very professional and helpful, and everything went so smoothly-we feel lucky that our friend found California Rose for us and can't recommend them highly enough. read more

California Rose catered our wedding this past weekend, and all I can say is THANK YOU! We were challenging as far as our venue size/logistics, not to mention our guest list exceeded the venue by a bit. Angy and Dov remained supportive and helpful through out the whole process from providing suggestions at the tasting, to coordinating with our venue, to recommending rental companies as well as incorporating that into their invoice to minimize costs, and then narrowing down our needs to accommodate our budget, which was limited for an invite list of 250. I'm continueing to refecive rave reviews from friends and family members about how delicious the food was and furthermore, how professional, fun and efficient the staff was. I have to make a personal shout out to ANDY! She rocked the head table and even took a quick break to get down on the dance floor as guests started chanting her name amidst her serving. We had our wedding catered by CRC a month ago. Dov, Angy & the team are the bomb. They are super professional but have a friendly, laid back and approachable attitude. They made my very high maintenance husband and myself VERY happy with how the big day went with all the preparation & time that they spent with us and using their experience & knowledge of the venue (St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Belvedere). The day went very smoothly and there wasn't a single thing I could think of (OR that I know of, ha!) that could have gone better. It was literally a seamless day. The food is also freaking delicious. We had a TON of compliments about the food. We did family style, which was a lot of fun and interactive for guests at the tables. And everyone was full and CRC even helped us facilitate an after-dancing "ramen bar" at the very end of the evening to soak up the alcohol for all the drunk people... including my husband. Absolutely delicious-everything in the ribs dinner was phenomenal! I can't believe it, I'm really not a mac n cheese person, but I almost ate some of the paper in order to get every last bite. And the coleslaw- usually yummy at best, was a total star even next to the best ribs I've had in ages. Haven't tried the cheesecake yet, but it's certain to be outstanding too! My wife and I worked with CA Rose for our 115 person wedding last week at the Landmarks Art and Garden Center in Tiburon, and in short, they were *outstanding.* We feel very fortunate that they were our caterer and day-of-event planner. Day of the Event: They exceeded our expectations. Everything worked seamlessly, and not only were our guests absolutely raving about the food / service, but my wife and I were completely relaxed and able to just enjoy ourselves as Dov/Eric and their colleagues had everything under control. One guest said the meal was not only the best wedding food she's ever had, but among the best food she's had all year! Moreover, my uncle with severe food allergies was particularly impressed with how they accommodated him. Beforehand: They gave us good high-level advice to help us plan our event, and helped us deal with a venue change a few months before our event (graciously talking with us several times and doing a second walk-through at our new venue). We ended up working with two different point people (first Angy, then Eric), both of whom were excellent. Overall, they could have been slightly more responsive to our emails, but the entire staff was very competent and pleasant. Finally, they were very honest with us; we never got the sense that they were trying to up-sell us, and there were no added fees / hidden charges. We highly recommend them! read more

California Rose catered our wedding at the General's Residence in San Francisco, and they were absolutely amazing! My husband and I did not want your typical bland wedding food, and Dov delivered. We served jerk chicken, a white fish with caponata, and a mushroom pasta. The flavors were delicious, and we've had guests come up to us weeks after the fact to tell us how much they enjoyed the food. Guests raved about the fruit, nuts, and cheese, which we almost passed on. Dov and Angy were so easy to work with.
